What happens when you combine the brilliant mind of Ryan Coogler and a bunch of blood-thirsty vampires? You get SINNERS, one of the most original and entertaining films of the year. A theatrical feat at the box office, it's grossed over 285 million dollars since its April 16th release. It was my absolute pleasure to talk to producer Sev Ohanian about how this monster movie gem came to fruition. Sev is a homie and we go way back to our baby producer days, so it is really special for me to reconnect with him after so many years. Our meet cute story is also one for the books! Sev is Armenian-American screenwriter, producer, and founder of Proximity Media alongside Ryan and Zinzi Coogler. He co-wrote and produced (alongside his wife and producing partner Natalie Qasabian who was on the podcast back in 2019!), SEARCHING, released by Sony Screen Gems in 2018. The film grossed $75 million worldwide and sparked the sequel, MISSING. Ohanian also co-wrote and produced RUN for Lionsgate, which became Hulu's most-watched film upon its premiere. During our time together, we talked about his first foray into filmmaking - an $800 micro-budget film shot on his dad's home video camera, how his working relationship with Coogler came to be, and the trials and tribulations of shooting on location in the swamps of Louisiana. xx cg

Continuing from our dialogue with Tomas Maldonado who has the unique job of securing the NFL, we have a conversation with Allen Ohanian whose day job is to protect the Los Angeles Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). LA DCFS is the largest agency of its type in the United States, its central focus is its 10,000 social workers who help defend some of the most vulnerable people in Southern California. Allen's role as CISO of the DCFS is to make sure that both the social workers– and all of the highly sensitive family data– stay safe and sound while they navigate some of the most complicated scenarios you can imagine. The army of people working in cybersecurity chartered with this mission? 5 people strong. Welcome to the government. When you're outnumbered 10,000 to 5, the name of the game is leverage. Allen explains how his team harnesses cloud services in order to amplify their impact, such as migrating from their own facilities to services such as AWS Call Center. Beyond the cloud, his primary approach is treating humans as the first and last line of defense, aiming to ensure they keep themselves and their data out of trouble. Allen's belief in this approach is deep enough to motivate him to pursue a PhD in psychology. He's also no stranger to traditional security controls, having clamped down on USB drives and restricted the iPhones that power social worker data collection in the field. Lastly, partnerships with law enforcement and the major cloud providers also allow their small cybersecurity team to extend their reach. In this short interview, Allen describes the unique threat model of the DCFS and how ultimately it ends up with concerns that bear a strong resemblance to critical infrastructure where availability is the top priority. Urgent, critical calls from children and families in crisis simply have to get through. Social workers must be kept safe. No exceptions. We hope that his interview with Allen provides a much needed window into the practical challenges of running cybersecurity for a large-scale government agency. Mission-driven CISOs like Allen work long hours against seemingly impossible odds for pay that's far less than their commercial counterparts. We owe them a debt of gratitude and where we can, a helping hand.

Some days it seems that the problems of housing and homelessness offset all the good things about California. People and companies are leaving the state at an alarming rate, and the problems continue to grow. Governance, in places like Los Angeles and San Francisco, appears paralyzed. Maybe we need to start over with all new leadership? So says our guest on this week's podcast, a professor of economics at UCLA and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Lee E. Ohanian.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is reportedly preparing to launch Kryptós, a crypto-centric fund, to capitalize on the current bear market. Ohanian's venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six, is looking to raise $177.6 million. “It's on sale. Everything is on sale,” is how founding partner Katelin Holloway explained the move to The Information. On this edition of Real Vision Crypto Daily Briefing, Paul Guerra and Ash Bennington discuss what Ohanian's move suggests about opportunities to pick up valuable assets at cheap prices. Also on today's agenda are Singapore sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings' decision to lead a $100 million funding round in blockchain investment firm Animoca Brands and Tether's response to a recent Wall Street Journal article that questioned the stablecoin's transparency and reserves. It's hard to call it anything but an immediate success as it now manages more than $1.4 billion, most of which came in the first several trading days. There are actually three bitcoin ETFs trading today - BITO along with the Valkyrie Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BTF) and the newly launched VanEck Bitcoin Strategy ETF (XBTF). The user saved a copy of Ohanian's avatar image, a cartoon of a slack-jawed ape wearing a propeller hat, and posted it in a comment on one of Ohanian's tweets with the caption, “Mine now.” Within the context of NFTs, by copying the image, the user was “stealing” Ohanian's profile picture, which Ohanian had bought on the blockchain for more than $7,000 in June. Ohanian insisted he was actually happy that the user had done this. “PLEASE! Right click save as. Make a shirt of it. It is a technology that has been disrupting the finance industry, but it is not exclusive to finance. It is actually a much more transparent way to secure information and verify the truth. In the world of content creation, unauthorized distribution of content can really affect a photographer or artist's income. There is also plenty of fraud that involves the sale of fake artwork and false assertions to original work. These are problems that a blockchain can help to prove for copyright and ownership of original art and content.https://kotaku.com/someone-right-clicked-every-nft-in-the-heist-of-the-cen-1848084379Someone Right-Clicked Every NFT In The Heist Of The CenturyHours ago, a website appeared online with the express purpose of hosting a nearly 20TB torrent (that's terabytes, folks, the big boys of digital data measurement) containing every NFT available through the Ethereum and Solana blockchains. The NFT Bay, whose name and overall design riff on iconic torrent database The Pirate Bay, is the work of one Geoffrey Huntley, an Australian software and dev ops engineer. GameStop, Clover Health, and AMC trades are fueled by buzz on social media, but Reddit co-founder turned venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian says the trading momentum of these “meme stocks” is hardly new. Ohanian shares his outlook for tech startup investing and the blockchain, social media's role in market surges, and mental health in the workplace. Today’s episode is all about influencer marketing. We’re joined by Derren Ohanian from Social Sensei. Derren knows what it takes to make an influencer marketing campaign for your business. Something that’s important to remember is to be a human being online. Yes, it sounds so simple, but way too many people seem to forget that once they’re online and in front of their keyboard. Being human and authentic is how we create real relationships. We talk about the different levels of influencer campaigns, looking at the opportunities for micro-influencers and even nano-influencers. What’s a nano-influencer? Someone that has a small audience (sub-1000 subscribers), but is hyper niche and has an engaged audience. If you’ve been thinking about, or you’ve been trying influencer marketing, you’ll want to listen to this episode. Derren’s experience and insights will help you understand where you should focus your efforts. I hope you all stay safe.Enjoy!A huge thank you to Campaign Refinery for sponsoring this episode. Spirit and business are often treated like two powerful, warring points of focus that cannot co-exist or be of service to the planet. It doesn’t have to be this way. The two can be brought together harmoniously to the benefit of the collective. If we are in alignment and our business goals are in the service to spirit, we can be more centered and trusting. We can surrender and let spirit lead the way, and we’ll never get pulled away from our purpose. We can show up in the entrepreneurship space as powerful channels co-creating with the Universe. How does trust in a higher purpose ground us in a marketing world of ever-changing social media algorithms? Why is it so important to be led by spirit in our businesses? How do we delegate and empower our people to get into their flow state? In this episode, I’m joined by heart-centered visionary CEO, coach, and dance poet musician, Derren Ohanian. We discuss how entrepreneurship changes when spirit comes first. 3 Things We Learned From This Episode - How to keep going when algorithms change Algorithms change and marketing channels shift, this is something we have no control over. Instead of trying to fight against it, surrender and trust spirit to lead you gracefully into the next iteration. We have to let go and trust knowing that when we let go, the Universe will always provide the success and abundance we desire. - How to empower our people by trusting the higher purpose Trust in your team, let them do the work and get out of the way. If we hover over them and watch their every move, we put them in a fear state and disempower them. We want them working from their zone of genius not a contracted state. - Why entrepreneurship is incomplete without spirit Business owners who aren’t informed by spirit often find themselves in the trap of lone wolf syndrome. This manifests in us wanting to control everything, harboring self-judgment, and thinking everything needs to be perfect. Moving past those traumas and tapping into spirit gets us into flow so we show up as our best selves in business. Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast (now on Twitter!), where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This week Natasha was on vacation, so Danny and your humble servant had to endeavour alone. She's back next week, so we'll be back to full strength as a collective soon enough. But even with a depleted hosting crew, we had a mountain of news to get through. And to joke about, as Danny was in the mood for a laugh. Here's the rundown:Reddit Co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s New Venture Fund Invests in Disposable Camera App: Danny and I are arbiters of what is cool, so we were the perfect pair to discuss influencers and new social applications. This one is actually neat, and Ohanian's inclusion in the investment viz his new fund was noteworthy.Zira raises $3.1M for its shift-scheduling service that helps manage hourly workers: This is a round that I covered, looking into Zira.ai and its product. Our take? It's neat, but operates in a competitive market.Shogun raises $35M to help brands take on Amazon with faster and better sites of their own: This is a similar story. A neat company with a neat product in a space where the is proven demand (TAM, in other words), and competition.Unqork's $207M Series C underscores growing enterprise demand for no-code apps: Another round worth mentioning is the Unqork deal. Unqork is a no-code service that helps other businesses create apps for their companies. It's growing like a weed, and is thus something worth knowing a bit about.Mmhmm, Five-Month-Old Video Startup Making Virtual Meetings More Fun, Raises $31 Million Pre-Launch: Yes, mmhmm has raised more money, and, we're excited to learn, could be launching this very month.Remotion raises $13M to create a workplace video platform for short, spontaneous conversations: Following the Slack news, this round stood out to us. Who will build the remote work comms platform of the future that people like to use?And then there was a host of other stuff to get through, like the FirstMark SPAC news, Root's impending IPO, and more on Airbnb's impending public offering. That was a lot. We did our best. Hugs and chat with you next week!

Today, we delve into the often unacknowledged art of math. Bob Ohanian is a math teacher in Round Rock who began his career in the world of business. For all of our listeners and Creative Moonlighters, we realize that math and money management is likely the last item you want to hear about. Bob Ohanian has often referred to it as, "good napping banter." But make no mistake, if you're anything like us, you eventually reach an age where you realize that money is a problem that everyone must solve. Some folks learn the lesson sooner than later (and more often than not, are better for it). As artists we often sacrifice all our time to learn our respective crafts. But today's show is meant to explore a flipside to that coin - and hopefully - to plant a seed regarding the concept that as artists, we can be both creative and math savvy with our bank accounts. After all, having finances in order relieves the burden on our brains and frees us to be more creative. We hope you'll take a moment to tune into what "Mr. Ohanian" (as he is known at school) is talking about. As always, send questions and comments to Griffynco@gmail.com

News Roundup Despite threats from White House, social media companies crack down on misinformation Despite president Trump’s continued claims that Silicon Valley, and social media companies in particular, harbor an anti-conservative bias, social media companies have stepped up their efforts to prevent a repeat performance of the 2016 election during which misinformation and state-sponsored propaganda ran rampant, often in favor of Trump’s presidency, according to the Mueller report and several other sources. On Monday night, after a day of employee virtual walkouts at the company in response to Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg’s insistence on leaving up posts that contain misinformation, civil right leaders met with Zuckerberg via videocall and things did not go well. Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights President Vanita Gupta, NAACP Legal Defense Fund head Sherrilyn Ifill, and Color of Change Executive Director Rashad Robinson issued a statement following the meeting stating that Zuckerberg “did not demonstrate understanding of historic or modern-day voter suppression and he refuses to acknowledge how Facebook is facilitating Trump's call for violence against protesters. Mark is setting a very dangerous precedent for other voices who would say similar harmful things on Facebook.” Zuckerberg followed up with a company memo on Friday saying the social media giant was again in the process of reviewing its policies related to discussions about police brutality and voter suppression. Before Zuckerberg’s announcement, the company had already begun making the public aware of foreign interference on the platform by labeling state-sponsored posts. Following the meeting with civil rights leaders and Mr. Zuckerberg’s announcement, Facebook, citing copyright concerns, removed a campaign video in which the president appeared to pay tribute to George Floyd. The company cited copyright concerns for taking down the video, after it had received complaints from the artist who’d created some of the artwork featured in the video. Twitter had also removed the video, which the White House called an illegal escalation – Twitter denied that removing the video was illegal and also cited to the president’s use of copyrighted material. Facebook also removed some 200 accounts associated with white supremacy groups last week. The company also removed fake antifa accounts, according to Reuters. Over at Reddit, some subreddit pages went dark in protest over the company’s hate speech policy, which leans heavily in favor of free speech. The protest culminated in Reddit Co-Founder Alex Ohanian’s resignation from the board and calling for his seat to be filled by an African-American board member. Ohanian also indicated that he would be donating $1 million to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp and investing future gains on his stock in the black community. Also, on Wednesday, Snapchat announced that it would no longer promote President Trump’s account due to the president’s promotion of violence during protests over the weekend before last. Finally, the Center for Democracy and Technology sued the White House in the DC Circuit last week over the president’s executive order directing the independent Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission to work together, along with the Department of Commerce, to curtail enforcement of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The president issued the order after Twitter flagged one of the president’s tweets as misleading, and a tweet in which the president criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order to allow mail-in ballots. Elon Musk calls for Amazon break-up Elon Musk took to Twitter calling for a break-up of Amazon, which he labelled a monopoly. The tweet came in response to a tweet by a New York Times reporter who’d written that Amazon had rejected his new book about COVID-19 on the grounds that it didn’t meet Amazon’s guidelines. Amazon has since stated that it removed the book in error. TikTok pledges to amplify black creators TikTok pledged to amplify black creators last week amidst criticism that it censored and suppressed content posted by blacks. The company stated that it would form a creator diversity council and a handful of other initiatives to address these concerns. The company also participated in the music industry-led “Blackout Tuesday” during which the company shut down its Sounds page. It also announced that it would invest $3 million in organizations that work to address black inequality (although the company didn’t mention which organizations it plans to invest in). Senators criticize AT&T on zero-rating In a letter to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, Senators Ed Markey and Ron Wyden criticized AT&T for zero-rating its own content on HBO. Zero-rating is the industry jargon used to describe the anticompetitive practice in which carriers count the use of competing platforms against their customers’ data limits but not their own content, in this case HBO, which AT&T acquired in 2018, along with HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia. The Senators set a response deadline of June 25th. Zoom announces end-to-end encryption for paying subscribers only Videoconference platform Zoom announced that it would be introducing end-to-end encryption, but only for paying subscribers. The company says doing so will allow it to work with the FBI to identify child pornographers and sex traffickers. However, Zoom made no reference to any evidence correlating free usership to the distribution of illegal content at a rate that exceeds the that of paid subscribers. California assembly introduces facial recognition bill The California Assembly is now considering a bill that would allow the State of California to conduct surveillance using facial recognition technology, if it gives notice ahead of time. The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California is opposing the measure on the grounds that it undercuts limitations on the use of facial recognition technology which are already in place in some local areas including San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. Denver cop fired for inciting a riot over Instagram during George Floyd protests Tommy McClay, a former police officer in Denver posed with two other cops for an Instagram photo for which he wrote “let’s start a riot”. That night, Denver police used tear gas and foam bullets against protesters, according to Ars Technica. The Denver Police Department fired McClay for the post. McClay was a brand new recruit—just 9 months out of the police academy—and so still subject to the initial probationary period of his tenure there. But one civil rights leader in Denver told Ars that the Denver Police Department has a high rate of re-hiring officers who were previously fired.

Hello and welcome to Season 2 of She Breaks Thru podcast! We are excited to begin this new season with a bang. Today's episode is a solo episode where I share my biggest takeaways from Inbound 2019. This is an event you must attend! I was selected to be a speaker and it was my first time there. There were 26 000 people in the audience and 250 speakers. Among those speakers, there was Alexis Ohanian ( Serena Williams' husband), Chip and Joanna Gaines, Bryan Stevenson, Elizabeth Gilbert, Katie Couric, Dharmesh Shah and so many more. There were so many takeaways from Inbound 2019.The first thing that impressed me was how well organized it was. 26 000 + people and we never ran out of food! That was impressive. Dharmesh Shah, Co-founder of HubSpot and Inbound shared an impressive story of how his journey has been since starting HubSpot and Inbound. He shared how you can face your fears and define your destiny. One of the things that stood out for me was when he shared on fear of commitment. Dharmesh never learned how to swim until he reached a certain age. When he eventually did learn how to swim, he just went all in. he also shared on how he tried so hard to change his Indian accent just so he could fit in. He eventually realized that he was never going to fit in and later realized that his accent will work to his advantage. A lot of us always try to change ourselves to fit in. This could be your accent, your body, the way you look or talk. This reminds me of when my daughter was young. She did not like the way she looked, from her curves to her lips. When the Kardashians made curves and big lips popular, it changed my daughter's perspective. She finally became comfortable with her looks. I don't believe that we need Kim Kardashian should accept the different traits we have. It is important to redefine the look of things. This is another lesson I learned from Dharmesh Shah. Another person who made an impact in my life is Arlan Hamilton, an angel investor. She is the founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital. The first black woman to own a big successful investment company. She talked about how hard it was for her when she started out and trying to fit in. Despite all her challenges, being a gay African American woman starting out in the industry. Usually, when you imagine an investor, you picture a tall handsome caucasian man wearing a suit. Arlan has redefined what an investor is, what an investor looks like. As you build your business or empire, what are you going to redefine? If Arlan had not redefined what an investor looks like we would not be where we are. If Dharmesh had not redefined what a successful business owner looks like we would not be here. They did not use their challenges and circumstances as excuses. Don't take your challenges as using them as an excuse. Both Arlan and Dharmesh faced a lot of challenges but they faced their fears and overcome their challenges. Another person who left a huge impression on me is Bryan Stevenson. He is a lawyer, social justice activist, founder/executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, and a clinical professor at New York University School of Law. He has faced a lot of negativity in his life and career. He is changing the world and the way people see things. One time when he went to court, a guard did not allow him to go in because he believed Bryan did not look like a lawyer. Bryan did not let challenges bring him down, instead, he is changing things and starting a movement. He is fighting for equal justice and although it has not been easy he is fighting for what he believes in. What do you believe in that is so true that you are willing to fight for it? What do you stand for? What are you willing to stand by? You can start a movement and it's up to you, choose to believe. You start a movement by going out there and make a change. Have your own category and start your own moment. That is really my biggest takeaways from Inbound 2019. I am so excited for Season 2 so subscribe and invite your friends to subscribe too. Leave a review on our podcast and we will send a gift your way. We have an awesome season instore for you! I know you will enjoy it. Let's grow together, let's be empowered together. See you next week on an awesome episode with Heather Dominick.
Recorded on April 18, 2019 Peter Robinson opens the session by discussing the major improvements that happened over the last one hundred years in the United States, between 1919 and 2019. For example, the GDP per person rose by 760 percent, life expectancy improved from 59 to 79 years, and various other automotive, technological, medical, and quality-of-life advances were achieved. Robinson then starts the discussion with former secretary of state George Shultz, who encourages a broader vision as we look for the reasons for prosperity. Shultz discusses some of the major events that occurred during the 20th century, e.g., the Great Depression, currency manipulation, World War II, and the Holocaust, whose negative impacts framed the mindset of Americans to question the institutions underlying society. Robinson then asks John Cogan about these institutions—private property, the rule of law, free markets—and the importance of these for prosperity. Cogan explains those institutions are necessary for sustained prosperity, which demands conditions that are stable in order to fuel economic growth. Robinson asks Terry Anderson about the importance of property rights. Terry says that property rights are the key to providing people with incentives to care for and maintain the property they own. Anderson notes that nobody washes rental cars, because they don’t own them. Robinson asks Lee Ohanian about the role of immigration in prosperity. Ohanian says that the United States has been fortunate in attracting the best talents from all over the world, which has played a major role in sustaining prosperity. Ohanian notes that having an inflow of immigrants like Sergey Brin from Soviet Union, Elon Musk from South Africa, and others has helped the United States stay on the cutting edge of innovation with new and fresh ideas.

“The only person that you need to give you a chance is yourself” – Sev Ohanian Sev Ohanian’s latest film is Searching, a modern thriller about a father searching for his missing daughter. The entire movie takes place on technology devices. It was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival and started playing in theater’s everywhere August 31, 2018. Thirteen years ago, his first film had one screening location: the TV in his teacher’s AP Environmental Science class at Glendale’s Hoover High School. His reward was an ‘A’ in the class, and the start of a lifelong passion for filmmaking. Since then, Ohanian has gone on to write, direct, and produce several films. During the episode, he discusses the diversity on display on both sides of the camera, the basics of good storytelling, the shifting entertainment industry, and the thrilling story of how his team made Searching. In addition, I also dish with Debra on Will and Grace and the women's movement.
