Thorhauge will lead the team responsible for on board operations and take charge for the new Queen's maiden season.Thorhauge, Cunard's first female Captain, celebrates 25 years of service this year with the company and will sail Queen Anne from Italy, where she is currently being built, to Southampton ahead of her inaugural sailing in early 2024.Thorhauge, who became Captain of Queen Victoria in 2010, started her career in 1997 as Second Officer on board Cunard's Vistafjord. Cruises with a duration of five nights or more will include an evening concert, while cruises lasting seven nights or more will feature two. Cruises of nine nights or longer will also have a subject-matter expert on board to give lectures about the destinations. The musical artists will either come from or be influenced by the cruise regions. Through their music – whether traditional songs or global hits – they'll convey the artistic flair of their homeland to the guests.A-ROSA is also responding to its guests' desire for more relaxation and well-being by widening the range of activities available. The SPA-ROSA will provide new treatments and massages, while yoga and fitness classes will be added to the onboard programme. What's more, as the industry's only provider of family cruises, A-ROSA will also be extending its offering for children. “As well as running dedicated family cruises during the school holidays, we'll provide a Kids Club with organised activities on almost all our ships if there are more than ten children on board,” explained Eichler.Focusing on sustainability“When we were working on our realignment plan, it quickly became clear that sustainability would play a central role,” said Eichler. “A-ROSA has always been involved in environmental and social actions, but taking responsibility will be a special area of focus for us in the future.” With this in mind, A-ROSA opened its own sustainability department on 1 February 2022. Department head Sandra Wendland introduced herself at the press conference. “We've brought a high-level partner on board – the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research – and we'll be working together to develop an integrated, long-term sustainability strategy for A-ROSA,” explained Wendland. Eight historical paintings are now on Rotterdam, including depictions of Rotterdam I, Rotterdam II, Rotterdam III, Rotterdam IV and Rotterdam V. The ship also hosts three previous Rotterdam ship models, and the bell from Rotterdam VI can be found in the Crow's Nest.Fun Facts, Figures and Highlights About Rotterdam's Art Collection:The largest and most expensive piece is “Harps,” a 7.5-ton stainless steel sculpture in the Atrium that spans three decks. With dynamic color-changing spot lighting and a mirrored ceiling, the work is a striking focal point on board. “Harps” was produced and designed by ArtLink, based on a concept by Tihany Design. It is valued at $620,000.The smallest works are by Betty Pepper, who uses reworked books and adds intricate details and scenes made from old maps. They can be seen in the forward stairwell between decks 7 and 8. The exquisitely small elements are a testament to Pepper's ability to work at a scale that few artists can master.Each of the stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom. The theme of the forward stairs is architecture, midship stairs is music and aft stairs is zoology.The oldest artist is Baron Wolman (deceased), born in 1937. The U.S. native was the chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine from 1967 until late 1970. He was ranked among the 20th century's elite and most collectible photographers.The youngest artist is Leva Berlande. The 31-year-old rising artist is a student from Latvia and has a painting featured in the Neptune Lounge.As with Rudi's Sel de Mer on Nieuw Statendam, Master Chef Rudi Sodamin's son and emerging artist Magnus Sodamin created a visually stimulating mural that adorns the wall in his father's namesake specialty restaurant on Rotterdam. Called “Oceans Feast,” the work measures 23 feet long and 3.6 feet tall.Italian artist Federico Picci contributes conversation starters that tie in magically with the ship's design. His photographs capture how music would look if we could not only listen to it but see it, too. In one image, balloons float out of a piano, representing the evanescence of something that evaporates in the air as it is created, like the element of sound.One of the most striking and expensive pieces is a dazzling, illuminated crystal “Key” (treble clef) created by Dutch artist Hans van Bentem for Deck 3, midship. The piece is valued at $27,000.Considered among the most avant-garde pieces in the collection is a fiberglass sculpture of an otter in the aft stairwell lobby on Deck 9 by Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel. San Miguel is known for his distinctive style of colorful geometric patterns that portray animals, skulls, religious iconography and human figures.In the embarkation area is a work titled “Billie Holiday” by Ani Abakumova. It is made up of 3 miles of threads — 8,000 threads in total. Abakumova's husband is a mathematician who developed an algorithm that enables her to create images from threads that change color without using paint.One of the most valuable works is a mixed media on canvas piece in the forward stairwell lobby on Deck 8 by Mehdi Ghadyanloo, an Iranian artist, painter and muralist known for his gigantic trompe l'oeil–style murals. Ghadyanloo recently had solo exhibitions in Almine Rech's galleries in Paris and Brussels, and now Holland America Line guests can enjoy his captivating art.Yongsun Jang, from Republic of Korea, welds cross sections of stainless-steel pipes to configure clusters of “cells,” then puts it all together to represent different organic beings. For Rotterdam, he created cello and pan flute sculptures for the B.B. King's Blues Club/Lincoln Center Stage space.The vibrant work of Lisa Krannichfield is on display in the Club Orange specialty restaurant. Her pieces meld the border between masculine and feminine and explore what it means to be fashionable and make a statement. The art aboard Rotterdam comprises one of the finest collections at sea. Guests can admire the decks inside and out and discover inspired works from a global assembly of emerging artists who share the spaces alongside some of the most renowned talent in the world.Cunard announces new itineraries on Queen Elizabeth for 2022Cunard has announced that a series of new itineraries sailing on Queen Elizabeth between February and May 2022 will go on sale in November. All sailings will depart from Southampton and will include a voyage in search of the Northern Lights, journeys to the Canary Islands and the Western Mediterranean as well as a grand voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Panama Canal and on to Vancouver, Canada.The new itineraries will replace the existing published schedule. Cunard continues to work very closely with authorities in all the destinations visited to ensure compliance with local health and entry requirements. Unfortunately, based on the most recent advice for cruise guests, and given the complexities of many of the international destinations involved, it will not be viable to maintain Queen Elizabeth's existing schedule and all departures from 20 February to 17 May 2022 inclusive are now cancelled. Ponant pioneers safety regulations in the polar regionsPonant, the world leader of luxury expeditions, and an expert in navigation in polar regions for over two decades, recently organised the world's first international rescue exercise in a remote polar zone. During a trial voyage to the North Pole with its polar exploration vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, the company raised the bar again for maritime safety and standards in polar tourism. The one-off on-site scenario was live coordinated between Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Canada, the United States and Norway, as well as the PONANT teams aboard and PONANT's head office in Marseille, France. The exercise took place over a 24-hour period on the ice, during which the 67 participants had to set up a polar survival camp among other tasks. American and Canadian coastguards, as well as Norwegian Arctic rescue experts were also present as observers.The objectives of the simulated rescue exercise were to optimise the coordination between the region's international rescue centres and conduct medical research and behavioural studies on participants to understand the impact of spending long periods of time on the ice. Conclusions are being shared with polar environment experts and will help the expedition cruise industry and rescue centres across the world to not only devise new safety strategies, but also improve their knowledge about the impacts of such a crisis situation.For Ponant, the exercise was also an ideal opportunity to test all the rescue and safety equipment, particularly the Ice Cube, the group survival kit, the floating polar shelters and the survival suits. Developed and designed from scratch by Ponant, they currently exceed the existing safety criteria established by the tourism industry as well as the military. Over the last forty years, proposals for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects have appeared around the globe, with mixed success. Most never obtain adequate funding or permits, but some proceed to a final investment decision and then commissioning. In Canada there are very few academic or public policy studies on LNG investment or which factors influence final investment decisions. Andrew Pickford's latest research for Positive Energy aims to fill that gap by addressing part of the larger question of “who decides and how?” when it comes to energy projects. He joins the podcast to discuss his new study, which compares the experiences of British Columbia and Western Australia in achieving positive final investment decisions in the LNG sector. Pickford discusses the implications for the future of LNG, renewable megaprojects, and the pathway to net-zero emissions. On today’s show, I welcome back to the program, Karen Feridun. Karen is the Founder of Berks Gas Truth, a grassroots community organization fighting to ban fracking and all shale gas infrastructure. She is co-founder of the statewide Better Path Coalition. For the past 11 years, she worked with organizations in PA, NY, NJ, and DE to get the ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin that was imposed in February. She is currently part of an international coalition working to stop Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports and a national coalition working with members of Congress to reform the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. We'll be talking about The Better Path Coalition's "We Are the Ones" campaign. The coalition hopes to build on the recent decision to ban fracking in the Delaware River Basin and the release of Kristina Marusic’s bombshell report for Environmental Health News, “Fractured: The Body Burden of Living Near Fracking” - and pressure the Wolf administration to end his support of fracking and the fossil fuel industry once and for all. Stuart Leibowitz speaks about the Clean Energy Jobs Bill in the first half our show. Later we talk about the logging at Whistlers Bend Park currently ongoing.Stuart encourages us to join the Lobby Day in Salem on February 6 to help pass Oregon’s Clean Energy Jobs Bill (sometimes known as a Cap and Pay bill). Stuart explains the concept behind the bill: 25,000 metric tons of carbon pollution allowed, and then the polluter has to pay for more. Stuart talks about how this would apply to the Jordan Cove project where the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Coos Bay would emit 1.8 million metric tons of carbon. The passing of this bill will make it expensive for a high-polluter to operate in Oregon. We found that none of the trees to be cut were marked by the county. Instead, they let the logger decide what to cut. The County failed to submit the required Notice of Operations to the state, further hiding the logging. When they filed the notice, late, after we complained, the county refused to comply with the 15-day waiting period. Then ODF told the county they had to do a written plan for the trees on the banks of the North Umpqua River and an Osprey nest in the area. But the logger had already cut down some of the trees this applied to. We complain about these, and other problems with the unannounced logging of a beloved park and a world-renounced disk-golf course.
Investment decisions will loom large over shipowners over the next 14 months or so as they scramble to comply with the IMO 2020 Sulfur Cap, which comes into force on January 1, 2020. The regulation dictates the use of 0.5% sulfur compliant fuel or abatement technologies, such as exhaust gas cleaning systems or burning alternative fuels such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Shipowners will have to decide well in advance of what their investment strategy is going to be. The clock is ticking. In late October 2018, the 73rd session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI to prohibit not just the use, but also carriage of bunkers above 0.5% sulfur on ships (unless they have approved abatement technology onboard). They are set to take effect March 1, 2020. At a series of customer seminars taking place at SMM 2018 trade show held in early September 2018 in Hamburg, Germany, Total Lubmarine and Marine Fuels emphasized that whatever choice shipowners make for compliance, Total has both a fuel and lubricant solution. Marine Log spoke with Jean-Philippe Roman, Technical Director at Total Lubmarine, and Total Lubmarine Global Marketing Manager Serge Dal Farra about how they are supporting their customers. These customer services include the onboard equipment, laboratory services, drain oil analysis and advisory services provided by the global Total Lubmarine team. “When it comes to 2020 and fuel choice, there is no single right solution,” says Dal Farra. “However, we would recommend that any ship operator works closely with a trusted bunker supplier. Total is an integrated group which provides expertise and assets in refining, trading, LNG, bunkers and of course lubricants.” Lubricant choice goes hand-in-hand with fuel choice, and low and zero sulfur fuels bring with them their own lubrication challenges. Total Lubmarine believes that low ash chemistry will be the basis for the next generation of engine oils, particularly for dual-fuel engines or those diesel engines fitted with selective catalytic reduction systems. Total Lubmarine is currently also developing new lube oils designed to help reduce CO2 emissions. On the lubricant side, Total Lubmarine has received two No Objection Letters (NOL) from MAN Energy Solutions – in recognition of the effectiveness of two of its products. The first NOL recognizes the excellent performance of cylinder oils TALUSIA HR 140, and approves it for use in MAN engines. TALUSIA HR 140 – which has a higher BN (base number) than most of its market counterparts – offers Total Lubmarine’s best solution for engines subject to severe corrosion. Designed for slow speed engines running on High Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO), TALUSIA HR 140 has high acid neutralization capacity, ensuring excellent cylinder protection. Its high BN has been created in order to maintain cylinder protection over long periods of high sulfur residual fuel usage, preventing corrosion resulting from sulfuric acid formation. This prevents cylinder wear and scuffing, and can extend the length of time between engine overhauls. The second NOL allows for the combined use of Total Lubmarine’s TALUSIA HR 140 and TALUSIA LS 25 lubricants in MAN’s Automated Cylinder Oil Mixing (ACOM) system. The MAN ACOM system is an onboard cylinder oil-blending unit designed to simplify the lubrication aspect of fuel switching – allowing vessels to use scrubbers or MAN GI or LGI type engines using LNG or fuel mixtures. TALUSIA LS 25 has been specially formulated for reliable operations with emission control area (ECA) compliant ultra low sulfur fuels – providing excellent cleanliness and outstanding deposit control for slow speed engines. Thanks to its low-ash content, engines using TALUSIA LS 25 are protected against deposit formation, which can lead to scuffing issues. It has been approved by MAN Energy Solutions for standalone use.
For shipowners, the clock is ticking on one of the shipping industry’s most significant air emission regulations. The IMO 2020 Global Sulfur Cap, due to take effect January 1, 2020, will mandate that shipowners burn 0.5% sulfur fuel to comply or use other means such as exhaust gas cleaning systems — so-called scrubbers — if they want to burn heavy fuel oil or operate their ships with dual fuel engines that can burn Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) or another alternative fuel. All ships that operate outside current Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) will be required to use fuel oil with a maximum sulfur content of 0.5% while vessels operating within ECAs will be required to use fuel oil with a maximum sulfur content of 0.10%. Currently, there are ECAs in North America and the U.S. Caribbean, Baltic and North Seas, and along certain parts of the coast of China. To get some insight into the widespread ramifications of the IMO 2020 Sulfur Cap, we spoke with Kirsi Tikka, the well-respected ABS Executive Vice President and Senior Maritime Advisor, Global Marine. Tikka spoke with us about the advantages and disadvantages of each of the compliance options, as well as future IMO regulations regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases.
For a discussion on the global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market, but from China's perspective, the Expert Series welcomed back Dr Michal Meidan. Michal leads analysis of Asian energy policies and geopolitics at Energy Aspects, with a particular focus on China. Among others, Paul and Michal discuss China’s transition from coal to natural gas, the impact of last years' LNG shortages and what the Chinese government will do to prevent those shortages from happening again, the influence of the trade dispute on LNG prices, and where China gets its LNG from. Furthermore, they also touch on Russia, Europe, and the changes in maritime regulation pertaining to shipping fuel.
この番組でも何度かお話をしてきましたが、来年はパナマ運河の拡張工事が完成して、大型の船舶が運河を通行可能になることに伴って、アメリカからの日本へのシェールガスの輸入が開始されます。今まで中東の原油に依存してきた日本のエネルギーの供給は、距離的に近いロシアやアメリカやカナダ、オーストラリアからの天然ガスに大きく変化することになります。今日と明日の二回で、日本のエネルギー供給として、LNG輸送のことについてお話ししたいと思います。 2013年の世界の天然ガスの産出量 は、3兆413億立法メートルであり、天然ガスの主な産出国は、ロシア、イラン、カタールといった国です。そして、その約3分の1にあたる1兆359億トンが海外に輸出されています。この天然ガスの輸出の方法としては、パイプラインによるものと液化した天然ガス、これをLNGといいますが、船舶などで輸送されます。 パイプラインによる輸送が、約710億立法メートルであり、主にヨーロッパや北米向けに輸出されているのに対し、液化した天然ガスは325億立法メートルであり、圧倒的に多くの量がアジアに向けて輸送されます。天然ガスの特徴として、マイナス162℃に冷却すると液化して、ガスのときの600分の1の体積になるので、輸送にも保管にも便利です。この液化した天然ガスが、Liquefied Natural Gas LNGと呼ばれます。今脚光を浴びているシェールガスもまた、天然ガスに含まれます。 ロシア、イラン、カタールなどで産出された天然ガスが、パイプラインでガスの状態か、液化されたLNGという形態で、船で輸送されますが、世界のLNGの最大の輸入国は日本です。一昨年は、321億立方メートルのガスが、LNGとして輸出されましたが、そのうちの3 分の1以上の122億立方メートルが日本向けでした。世界には、LNGを輸送するLNG船と呼ばれる巨大なガスタンクを複数積載した専用の船がありますが、2014年の時点で、世界の404隻のうち、88隻が日本への輸入に従事していました。 日本はエネルギーのほぼ全量を海外からの輸入に頼っていることは広く知られていることですが、日本に輸入されるLNGの約7割が電力に、残りの3割が都市ガス用に利用されています。まずガスで言えば、国内の都市ガスの約96パーセントは、LNGによるものです。また電力について言えば、電気事業連合会の調査によれば、2013年度の国内電力会社10社の発電電力量合計の52.6パーセントに当たる3,910億KWhが、LNGによる発電となっています。クリーンなエネルギーとして注目されながらも、1985年から2010年までは、電源別発電量において、LNGが全体の20パーセント台を超えたことはなかったのですが、2011年の東日本大震災以降は、LNGの需要が一層高まってきています。 中東の石油に依存してきた日本が、エネルギーの供給源を世界中に拡大することは良いことだと言えます。日本の輸入元は、現在オーストラリア、カタール、マレーシア、ロシア、インドネシアが上位5カ国ですが、来年からはアメリカとカナダも加わることになります。そう考えると、輸入ソースの拡大や安定性を考えると、多様性という面でもリスクヘッジという面でも、とても良いことだと思います。 今日のまとめ:来年に予定されているアメリカからのシェールガスの輸入で注目されているLNGの輸送について、産地と消費地の関係を世界最大の輸入国である日本の例で、説明しました。
