Welcome to "Literature and Us"! In our foundational episode, host Danny tackles a huge question: with AI that can write, summarize, and create, do we still need literature? We argue that the answer is a resounding YES. While algorithms process data, literature provides something irreplaceable: human experience. Join us as we explore how stories serve as the ultimate technology for understanding ourselves and others in a way that data streams simply can't. This isn't a battle against technology, but a celebration of what makes us uniquely human. In this episode, you'll discover: The crucial difference between an AI's summaryand a reader's experience. How literature acts as an "empathy engine,"allowing us to live a thousand lives and understand different perspectives through books like To Kill a Mockingbird and Never Let Me Go. Why reading is a powerful workout for your brain, serving as a "critical thinking gymnasium"that helps you spot misinformation and navigate a complex world. How timeless stories from Shakespeare to Tolstoy connect us to the unfiltered human condition—love, loss, grief, and joy—in all its messy glory. Why the "inefficiency" of reading is actually its greatest strength in our fast-paced, optimized world. "Anarcho-Tyranny is a political theory that describes a government that is simultaneously oppressive toward law-abiding citizens while being lax or ineffective at controlling criminal behavior." Sounds familiar, doesn't it? We live in a country where 14-time convicted felons can walk the streets unmolested by authorities, yet we constantly have to live in fear of a government bureaucracy suddenly deciding a random piece of plastic will get you arrested. Is this all a big coincidence, or is this a carefully orchestrated set of circumstances? Well, listen up. Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Student of the Gun Radio Intro Paul mentioned a new Pipe Hitters novella by Nicholas Orr called "Mockingbird" and that work had begun on Book 5 of the series. The show's intro music was played, and they prepared to discuss gear and tech topics, with a particular focus on a recent article about dangerous safety. Tech Talk from EOTech Inc The discussion focused on the importance of having the correct batteries for optic devices, particularly for those using unusual battery types. Paul  shared a personal experience where a dead battery in an optic caused issues at the range, emphasizing the need to check and carry appropriate batteries, especially when traveling or attending training classes.  Warrior of the Week They introduced the Warrior of the Week segment, honoring Charlie Kirk for his courage in speaking truth despite opposition. The discussion then transitioned into the Student of the Gun Homeroom segment, where they planned to explore stochastic terrorism and referenced an article about arbitrage that would be linked in the show notes. Western Civil Society on the Brink Zach read an article titled "When the Wolves Roam Free" discussing the collapse of civil society in Western countries, focusing on issues like crime, immigration, and anarcho-tyranny. He highlighted specific examples, including a recent incident in North Carolina and the situation in New York City, where 63 criminals were responsible for over 5,000 offenses on public transportation due to no-bail policies. Zach emphasized the need to address these serious issues affecting Western nations, which he argued are at a critical crossroads. Racial Bias in Media Coverage We discussed a violent incident where 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Irina Zerutska was stabbed to death on a light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina. The mainstream media largely ignored the story for two weeks, with coverage only emerging through alternative media platforms like X. The attacker, DeCarlos Brown Jr., was a repeat offender with 14 previous arrests, yet was allowed to remain free. The discussion highlighted the contrast in media coverage depending on the race of the perpetrator and victim, and criticized local officials for pausing their meeting to celebrate a council member's birthday rather than immediately addressing the incident. Anarcho-Tyranny and Gun Regulation History Zach read a definition of anarcho-tyranny, describing it as a system where the state is both oppressive and permissive, failing to enforce laws against criminals while over-regulating law-abiding citizens. Dad emphasized the importance of understanding this concept and recommended reading Alexander Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago to grasp the reality of socialism and the deliberate release of criminals who continue to commit crimes. Today, we continue our series on healthy relationships, and we're talking about managing difficult relationships. There's a wonderful scene in the classic film To Kill a Mockingbird, when the attorney Atticus Finch is confronted by the father of a girl who has accused a black man of rape. The father, enraged, walks up to Finch—played perfectly by Gregory Peck. He spits in Finch's face as the attorneys' children watch. You can see the anger in Finch's face, but he slowly and calmly maintains his composure. He simply walks past the man, who now looks pretty small, and everyone's eyes. God has given us the power over difficult people. It's called not letting them set the rules. 1 Peter 3:9 says, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing because to this you were called, so that you may inherit a blessing.” Not always easy, definitely, but we're capable of it. Remember that. This life is very much about winning and losing. Determine that a difficult person in your life is not going to win by controlling you and getting under your skin. In wrestling terms, don't let that person pin you. Is that obnoxious person in your life really all that obnoxious, or are you a grouch, letting yourself get caught in what is really only a difference in personalities? Go home from work one evening and think about that. Make your mind up to start out the next day by being nice to that person. You'll be surprised how that can change the equation. And that's what Colossians 4:6 is talking about when it says, “Let your speech be always with grace seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man.” Or maybe you're a man frustrated with the relationship between your wife and your mother. This is always a potentially difficult situation. Maybe you think your wife should be more adaptable, but have you forgotten what God told the man in Genesis 2:24? It says, “This is why a man leaves his father and mother, and is united to his wife. And they become one flesh.” Your responsibility in that situation is to your wife, not to making sure your parents' feelings come first in all situations. So you see, often that difficult person you're dealing with is you, or at the very least a different perspective will help you see where the fault really lies. Finally, in 1 Corinthians 5, we read that Paul advises for really difficult people, a cooling-off period is legitimate. For example, the person who is causing real strife in a church should not be allowed to go on like that indefinitely; bad behavior sometimes must be confronted for the good of the community. And even for the good of the offended person, this is sound advice. So if we stick to what the Lord has already told us, and our tried and true methods for dealing with difficult people, we can get to a better place. Let's pray.Father God, a person who is angry or troublemaker creates chaos for everyone. Help us analyze each of these situations as unique so that we know how to handle them from Your Word. And most especially help us make it a habit to pray for those who are difficult, so that we might see their lives changed, and brought into harmony and unity. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Save 15% Off your entire purchase of faith-based apparel + gifts at Kerusso.com with code KDD15.

Jarrad highlighted that the home study course covers specific techniques and tactics used in the training, giving students a head start on understanding expectations and allowing them to absorb instruction more quickly during the live session. Gun Safety and Emergency Training The meeting focused on a discussion about responsible gun ownership and emergency medical training. Professor Paul Markel shared his experience hosting a radio show with Tom Gresham and discussed his book "Beyond the Boo Boo," which covers traumatic medical training for citizens. John, a retired physician, called into the show to discuss the importance of stop-the-bleed training and shared his experience as a certified instructor. They emphasized the need for quick action in emergency situations and the simplicity of stop-the-bleed techniques, suggesting that anyone can learn to help save lives in the event of a shooting or other traumatic incident. Battery vs. Tritium Optics Discussion The discussion focused on the benefits and drawbacks of battery-powered versus nuclear-powered (tritium) optics, with Professor Markel explaining that while tritium sights offer perpetual power without battery changes, they are more expensive initially and have a limited lifespan of 8-9 years before needing professional refurbishment.  Sonny Puzikas and the Role of Violence in Man's Life Jarrad sits down with the great Sonny Puzikas for a long discussion on life, faith, and what place that violence has in the world, as well as in a man's life. If you haven't heard the old time radio drama Bold Venture, you should give it a try. It ran from 1951-1952, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, set in pre-Castro Cuba.https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Bold_Venture_Singles2. The part of King Moses in Bold Venture was performed by Jester Hairston. One of the first black students to attend Tufts University, Hairston studied music at Julliard, collaborated with Russian composer Dmitri Tiomkin for 30 years, wrote the song “Amen” that became a hit for The Impressions in 1964, and acted in tv and films like The Alamo, To Kill a Mockingbird, In the Heat of the Night, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and Being John Malkovich.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jester_Hairston3. Music for the Bold Venture radio show was composed by David Rose, who later wrote music for films and tv shows like Leave it to Beaver, Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven. If you think of the jazzy trombone song that has become a cliche of burlesque, you're probably thinking of Rose's composition “The Stripper,” which hit #1 in 1962.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rose_(songwriter)Credits:The opening and transitional music clips were from episodes of the public domain radio show Bold Venture. Am 30. August 1980 fand im damaligen West-Berlin vor dem Reichstagsgebäude ein ikonisches Konzert statt. Die Band Barclay James Harvest spielte ihr Konzert "Berlin (A Concert For The People)". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Berlin (A Concert For The People)" wird im Podcast gesprochen: (05:04) – "Berlin"(09:49) – "In Memory Of The Martyrs"(15:50) – "Mockingbird" (1980 Berlin Live Version)(23:41) – "Life Is For Living"(26:03) – "Loving Is Easy"(29:30) – "Child Of The Universe"(35:00) – "Hymn"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge: https://1.ard.de/barclay-james-harvest-berlin-a-concert-for-the-people __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Mike loves Tim Key. This much has been true for some time, and he's thrilled to discover that the comic poet's unique approach to wordplay and social interactions finds a natural place on the cinema screen, in the character of an eccentric lottery winner who lures his favourite folk duo, long since broken-up, to the lonely island on which he lives for a private gig. Tom Basden's singer-songwriter finds the forced reunion an unwelcome intrusion from his past, and so begins a comedy about grief, loss, loneliness, and rice. The plot is easily predicted, the visual nous close to absent, but it has a good heart and, in Key, an irresistably energetic, unusual central performance. It filled the Mockingbird with laughter and left us all feeling warm and cuddly and sad and happy. The Ballad of Wallis Island is a charming film, well worth watching. Recorded on 5th August 2025.

This is because if he was, there'd be no story for the kids to take care of -- BUT... there are a few exceptions... - Brian and Nate search for those elusive MG/YA unicorns: the good and present father. - What about To Kill a Mockingbird's Atticus Finch? Jeremiah Land from Peace Like a River? Guido in Life is Beautiful? In these stories, the good dad becomes the protagonist. - Uncle Frank in 100 Cupboards? Nate explains why he'd never call Uncle Frank a good father figure. - Heading further afield: what about Mustafa from The Lion King? Bandit from Bluey? Gomez Addams??
 - Finally the guys turn to real life: Ralph Moody's father, Pa Wilder, Bible characters including Nate's pick for best dad in the whole Bible: Jesus's earthly father, Joseph.

In this explosive revelation, Tulsi Gabbard, former Congresswoman and now high-level intelligence official, drops a bombshell: Operation Mockingbird, the once-secret CIA program to control U.S. media through paid journalists and editors, was never shut down—it's still active today. Originally uncovered in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Carl Bernstein, Mockingbird placed intelligence assets inside America's most trusted newsrooms to shape public opinion. Gabbard's discovery reignites scrutiny, revealing the continued use of coordinated messaging, disinformation, and propaganda across modern outlets—even implicating current government efforts to suppress her findings. As Gabbard fights to shut it down, figures like Sen. Tom Cotton move to strip her authority. If true, this may be the most significant media scandal in modern American history—and a turning point in the war over truth.

Aaron Bartz brings a grounded, thoughtful energy to the role of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and in this conversation, he shares just how much life and imagination go into keeping the magic alive night after night. From flying and fire to illusions and high-stakes contingencies, Aaron walks us through what it's like to debut on Broadway in one of the most technically demanding plays out there—and why so many actors in the production come from classical Shakespeare backgrounds. We also explore Aaron's journey from Great Falls, Montana to the Lyric Theatre in NYC, including a pivotal classroom moment that set him on the path to acting, and how a love of storytelling (and a little persistence) helped him land gigs that ultimately led to an MFA from Yale. Now a father of two, Aaron reflects on how playing Draco as a parent has shifted his own understanding of growth, vulnerability, and legacy. Aaron Bartz is an actor and writer currently starring as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. He earned his MFA from the Yale School of Drama and began his career with regional Shakespeare productions across the country.
