The inevitable decline of civilization takes center stage as the show kicks off with the miserable results of the FACEBOOK SETTLEMENT, confirming Brian's $4.01 payout, followed by a discussion of the SPORTS BETTING SCANDAL, where MLB players are rigging games over prop bets, confirming that gambling is now actively killing sports; moving to the news, the guys celebrate the DENMARK SOCIAL MEDIA BAN and SCHOOL PHONE BANS, which are already proving that teenagers need mandatory digital detoxes, prompting comparisons to Footloose and the revelation that teens are now passing handwritten notes and taking Polaroids. Naturally, things aren't going well for the hyper-rich, as evidenced by the TESLA EXECUTIVE EXODUS and the launch of WAYMO FREEWAYS, which will surely bring chaos to LA, and the ongoing saga of massive capital destruction via OPENAI LOSSES and META AI FAILURES, prompting Mark Zuckerberg to announce his desperate bid to CURE ALL DISEASES with AI, a feat less audacious than the fraud of AI startup FIREFLY AI TRANSCRIPT, which admitted its original "AI" was just human transcriptionists. They then hit a laundry list of digital woes, including the dubious convenience of APPLE PASSPORTS, the creeping dread of Sam Altman's failing WORLDCOIN EYEBALL SCANS, the ridiculous crypto fraud DEFI OFFICE SPACE that literally copied a movie plot, and Coinbase's inexplicable decision to bring back high-risk ICOs; the absurdity continued with the OPENAI LAWSUIT over a suicidal chatbot that suggested the user "Rest easy, King," and the political maneuvering of the REPUBLICAN BROADBAND REDIRECT, which will gut internet access for the underserved to fund the Treasury, but the real threat to humanity remains the clandestine PREVENTATIVE GENE HACKING startup funded by tech billionaires aiming to create modified babies offshore. In Media Candy, they share reviews of the excellent DIPLOMAT, ZOOTOPIA, and the just-released LUSH DOCUMENTARY, confirming our combined Gen-X fragility, before celebrating two definitive wins for reality: the fact that physicists have finally CRUSHED THE SIMULATION THEORY, and the literary brilliance of Joyce Carol Oates' tweet, which expertly called out Elon Musk as uneducated and uncultured. All this and more on this episode of Grumpy Old GeeksSponsors:CleanMyMac - clnmy.com/OLDGEEKS - Use code OLDGEEKS for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Sean and Amanda are joined by Van Lathan to cover two new releases that they collectively had mixed feelings about. Before diving in, though, they theorize about why the fall movie slate has been such a huge disappointment both commercially and critically and what it represents for the industry at large going forward (0:34). Then, they break down Edgar Wright's new action film, ‘The Running Man,' starring Glen Powell, which they found deeply messy but also full of impressively staged action scenes (28:01). Next, they unpack the new magician legacy sequel ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don't,' starring Jesse Eisenberg and Dave Franco. They explain their personal relationship with the original films and why Rosamund Pike was born to play an evil diamond heiress villain, and they hypothesize about what its potential box office chances are (59:23). Finally, Edgar Wright joins Sean to discuss the evolving landscape of studio filmmaking, how he constructs an elaborate action set piece, and the amazing story about how Powell was cast for the lead part (1:15:55). Hosts Doug Stuart and Cody Cook have a lively exploration of movies and their deeper significance beyond mere entertainment. The conversation kicks off with playful banter about the differences—or pretensions—between the terms "film," "movie," and "cinema," before diving into their personal journeys into movie appreciation, including the influence of family, childhood favorites, and the allure of old TV comedies. As the discussion unfolds, Doug Stuart and Cody Cook tackle how movies clarify, challenge, and shape values, examining the artistic, message-driven, and thematic layers beneath the surface. They consider why storytelling is central to human experience and how films, like the Bible, can illuminate questions about morality, suffering, and meaning. The episode highlights how both Christian and libertarian themes can emerge from unlikely cinematic places. From the rich symbolism and messaging in blockbusters like Jurassic Park and Minority Report to the nuanced character dynamics in The Dark Knight trilogy, Cody Cook breaks down how central planning, redemption, forgiveness, and the problem of evil play out on the big screen. The conversation also covers cult classics, overlooked gems, genre preferences, and how personal references and pop culture literacy shape one's perspective on film.Listeners are invited to reconsider the films they love—not just as sources of entertainment, but as vehicles for reflection, values, and even theological conversation. Whether you're a cinephile, a casual watcher, or someone looking for libertarian or Christian undertones in your favorite movies, this episode is packed with recommendations, insight, and plenty of food for thought.Have a film that fits the libertarian or Christian mold? [School of Movies 2025] This is a commissioned episode for our hardworking Pez-loving Discord moderator Mike Hasko. It's a relic from 1993, a period just after the Cold War and not too long before the War on Terror, and the focus is on a middle-aged, white, American, divorced, straight, cis, male office-worker who one boiling hot Los Angeles morning decides that he has had enough. The man known throughout most of the movie by his personalised license plate as D-FENS (played with vigour by Michael Douglas in this memorable and divisive Joel Schumacher joint) steps out of the car he leaves stuck in traffic, walks across a city that is not designed for pedestrian travel, and clashes with everyone who gets in his way. The creative team are really trying to have their cake and eat it by making the protagonist also the antagonist and how much they succeed or fail is very much down to the perception of the viewer. Pull up a breakfast 'Whomelette' and an ice-cold, aggressively-priced can of Coca Cola and we shall guide you through this eventful day.
This is our final film review of Season 7, and we decided to go out with a bang: a bizarre labor of love that provokes as much confusion as it does admiration. A film fifty years in the making, equal parts science fiction, political allegory, and personal manifesto from one of the greatest living directors. It's proof that some people still haven't processed 9/11, and quite possibly the only place you'll see an Asian Elvis impersonator singing “America the Beautiful.” It's Megalopolis, written, directed, produced, and funded by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola.Check us out on...Twitter @TSMoviePodFacebook: Time SensitiveInstagram: @timesensitivepodcastGrab some Merch at TeePublicBig Heads Media

Join James (from the Watchtower Database YouTube channel) as he shows his good buddy Brian the entire DC Animated Universe from start to finish for the very first time, in the controversial airdate order--so he may view these shows the way human beings experienced them in the far-gone days of the 1900s (and 20-hundreds). Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss Richard Linklater! He's an American indie legend who we recently just spoke to! With two new films out here at the end of 2025 (Blue Moon and Nouvelle Vague), we discuss his B-Sides: SubUrbia, The Newton Boys, Me and Orson Welles, and Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood. Our guest is Ryland Aldrich, our dear friend, an accomplished producer and experienced writer on film, as well as the creator of FYCit App,“the number one smartphone app for awards voters and guild members to find awards screenings, events, and content for all the season's top contenders.” Conor, Ryland, and I dig into our love for Linklater, the highs and lows of his long, accomplished career, and his continued improvement as a stylist. We debate Ethan Hawke's chances of getting an Oscar nomination for his Blue Moon performance, the lasting cultural relevance of School of Rock, and Orson Welles' famous response to a question about Elia Kazan many years ago. There's also mention of the Mercury Theater's famous 1938 broadcast of “The War of the Worlds,” the documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, and those real-life clips of The Newton Boys.
Movies discussed: I Know What You Did Last Summer (remake), The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (remake), Birdeaters, The Reprisal (short) We're back after a lovely Twin Cities Con, and we've got a lot to talk about. This time we all dig the bleak Australian thing Birdeater, some of us have big dumb fun with I Know What You Did Last Summer, and one of us liked The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Next episodes assignments: Cellar Dweller Frankenstein (2025) Sew Torn Slash (short) Watch along with us if you like and we'll see you next episode.
