Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Empowering the Next Generation: Breaking Stereotypes and Building BridgesI'm excited to bring you an inspiring story of transformation and hope with this week's guest, Quay Hanna. Quay's journey is one of those rare, raw tales that has the power to reshape perspectives. Back in the mid-90s, Quay was just another young man from rural Pennsylvania with preconceived notions and a limited view of the world. But that all changed when he embarked on a nine-week Greyhound bus journey across 37 states. What began as a simple cross-country trip turned into a life-altering experience, chronicled in his memoir Bus America: Revelation of a Redneck. In the years since, Quay has taken his lessons from the road and transformed them into over 1,300 presentations across multiple countries, speaking with honesty and heart about the importance of understanding, diversity, and confronting stereotypes. His ability to connect with people of all backgrounds and bridge divides has made him a sought-after speaker and a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and community building.Quay and I also share a common bond as fellow advisors on the ProHuman Foundation, an organization committed to fostering unity and human dignity. Today, we'll dive into the profound insights he gained on his journey, discuss his work in education and youth empowerment, and explore how simple human connections can dismantle even the most entrenched prejudices.TakeawaysA Greyhound bus trip opened Quay's eyes to his own prejudices.Quay's experiences highlight the complexity of identity. He learned that stereotypes often dictate behavior.Quay's transformation was sparked by genuine interactions. There is great importance in the understanding of others.Ignorance can lead to fear, which breeds hate.Quay's journal documented his evolving perspective. Personal connections can break down racial barriers.Conversations can challenge our preconceived notions.Empathy is key in understanding others.Youth today crave genuine connections.Education can bridge divides in society.Prejudices can be challenged through shared experiences.Community support is vital for youth empowerment.Empowering youthWhat have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Be kind to one another. Be grateful for everything you've got. Make each and every day the day that you want it to be! In this week's episode Mark Horowitz joins us for a discussion about potential racism revealed by online daters' preferences. In a recent published critique of a book on the subject, Mark questions the authors' claims of systematic and racially exclusionary patterns in online dating. The book was based on a large dataset and we appreciate the complexity of the process used to compile the descriptive statistics. However, we question the authors' conclusions when there are many alternative biosocial explanations. Mark and Elizabeth agree that reducing daters' discriminatory behavior to racism is not supported by the data, and is particularly ill-considered in today's polarized ideological environment. Who would've thought that something as simple as spitting could tarnish a man's reputation, or that the well-intentioned concept of gentle parenting could potentially do more harm than good? I boldly delve into these intriguing topics in the first half of our discussion. In the latter half of my discussion, I challenge the preconceptions of homelessness and a racially prejudiced nation, taking a hard look at homelessness, crime, and racial dynamics in San Francisco. I'll explore the links between fatherless homes and antisocial behavior, the perception of the rich as looting targets, and the need for a spokesperson within the black community. Using Savannah, Georgia as a case study, I offer a fresh perspective on the racial dynamics in America. Part One of Pride and Prejudice chapter of Unmasking Prejudice: Silencing the Internal Voice of Bigotry: Introduction along with both Religious and Racial Prejudice. Prejudice is a word that is often associated solely with race. However, the truth is that we pre-judge all the time based upon countless factors, including gender, age, race, beliefs, politics, or any other infinite number of minute differences; it is a common habit for all of humanity to form an opinion without facts, firsthand experience, and without empathy and value for our fellow man. What if these habits changed? What if our default response was first to love, to learn, and to listen? In 'Unmasking Prejudice: Silencing the Internal Voice of Bigotry', Dr. Melodye Hilton thoughtfully addresses: The many faces of prejudice and bigotry; Pre-judgment and assumption as societal stumbling blocks; The dangers of gossip, rumors, and slander; The personal pain of prejudice through real-life stories; and Our responsibility as humans to stop devaluation by representing a restorative influence. 'Unmasking Prejudice: Silencing the Internal Voice of Bigotry' invites all of us to recognize and remove the hidden masks of prejudice so that we can have a hand in changing the cultural narrative and bringing healing to our land. How do we define our "tribes"? That's a word that gets thrown around a lot these days - political tribes, ideological tribes, religious tribes, national tribes... it's just tribalism all the way down. Tribalism, factionalism - whatever you want to call "strong loyalty to one's own social group" - has been with us forever, and we'll never be rid of it. But we can redefine and expand our tribes to include more people, and decrease the animosity we may feel toward our "outgroups." Writer and filmmaker Jay Shapiro has been thinking a great deal about how to do just that.Who Gets to Wear the Hat?: Replacement and Representation, by Jay Shapiro (companion essay to this episode)Opposite Field - a film by Jay ShapiroAre Humans Hard-Wired for Racial Prejudice? - Los Angeles TimesPolitical Tribes: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations, by Amy Chua7: Canceling Categories, with Angel Eduardo - The New LiberalsI Can Tolerate Anything Except the Outgroup, by Scott AlexanderYour Roots Are Showing, by Razib Khan"50% of the 5,000 pilots we train in the next decade to be women or people of color." - United AirlinesDeficit Gives a Tarnish to Golden Gate Bridge - The New York TimesFrom “Is” to “Us” the Words That Define Impeachments, by Jay ShapiroMoral Saints, by Susan WolfDilemma Podcast - hosted by Jay Shapiro----------Email: newliberalspodcast@gmail.comTwitter: @NewLiberalsPod

Dr. Sunita Mutha thinks if health care providers consistently asked themselves one question, it would lead to reducing health disparities based on race, income and other factors: “Who does this advantage, and who does this disadvantage?” In her extensive research at the intersection of health disparities and quality improvement, she’s come to understand there are predictable things providers do that influence inequities in care. Looking at the current COVID vaccine rollout provides a fresh example. “If your main strategy is to reach out to patients electronically, it leaves out people who don't have online access, who might be monolingual, who might be elderly and isolated. You could have predicted who you would leave out by the strategies you chose to use." As director of Healthforce Center at the University of California San Francisco, Mutha works with organizations nationwide to reduce disparities and build a culturally-competent workforce, but also to address a wide range of other challenges in healthcare, from the impact of electronic health records to nurse staffing ratios. As she explains to Futuro Health CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan in this episode of WorkforceRx, training emerging leaders is another special focus at Healthforce Center. “They are the glue that keeps an organization functioning and effective. They mobilize the frontline teams. So, in our training we try to instill in them both confidence and skills so they can be really effective.” Check out this episode for an expert view of current and future workforce challenges in healthcare, and the role of research and capacity-building to meet them.

I always confuse these three terms. I sometimes use them interchangeably. It's hard for me to clearly and accurately express myself with these terms. If you're like me, I'm hoping that this episode clears things up for you a little bit. I read "White Fragility" by Robin Diangelo (2018) who clearly defines these three terms and explains what roles each play in our society. She also talks about why it's so hard for White people to talk about racism and I picked three reasons to share with you all. I learned so so much from reading this book! If you want to know more, I recommend you pick this up!
Greetings, my Soapboxers! In today's episode, I would like to introduce you to a new initiative that a group of friends and I have founded called the Minority Home Ownership Coalition. This effort assists in bridging the wealth gap between America's majority population and its minority population by assisting minorities in becoming home/landowners. In the second half of this episode, I begin to discuss the difference between Racial Prejudice and Racial Bias and explain why even though we don't live in a world of overt racism, bias is still just as dangerous. What is racial prejudice? And how do we free ourselves from it? In Episode 17 of Elevated Conversations, I explore these questions with my good friend, Edward Peace, host of the new program "Ramblings of a Trying Baha'i".This episode was actually part 2 of a conversation that unpacked some key concepts from the book "Advent of Divine Justice", a lengthy letter written by the Guardian of the Baha'i Faith, Shoghi Effendi, written to the Baha'is of North America in 1938. Me and my friends experienced some racial inequalities and I gotta talk bout it... finally.
In this episode, I'm joined by my good friend and brother, Rev. Stefan Weathers Sr., to discuss his experiences living as a black man in America from his first police encounter as a teenager coming home from school, to the legacy of policing and slavery, the need for reallocating police funds, the importance of having representation in the classroom, in positions of leadership, and elsewhere, and what that means for young black and brown children, and the differences of perspectives he has from growing up in what is called the New South to now living and raising a young family in the North. Based on Jesus’ conversation with a Samaritan women, Howard considers how Jesus conducted Himself in a socio-political context rife with racial tension and mistrust. The sermon suggests ways in which each one of us can contribute toward overcoming racial prejudice in our society through personal action.

Hope for a Fractured World: A Biblical Response to Racial Prejudice
It's taken me some time to post this because I've been processing what's been going on in the world. White privilege is real and we need to continue to do the work for equality. Initially, I felt anger as a Brown woman, and then I slowed down and returned to centre. Here I found clarity on my experiences of racial prejudice and how they fit into the bigger picture, and whilst it is still a work in progress I feel called to share my story and continue to educate myself too.Get the full show notes here:
In light of the recent uptick in hostile race relations, Pastor Jeff identifies why racial prejudice is wrong and how we can begin to erase racial prejudice in today's society. While one's Thoughts of Racial Prejudice can vary, This quote from Vaudevillian Entertainer Bert Williams (1874-1922) sums it up to near-perfection.
This week we cover the shootings of a Miami UPS driver & innocent bystander by the police during a standoff, the company's reaction to this reckless display of aggression, and laughable pro-cop takes from the comment section Also, The Libertarian Party Facebook page posts a token statement of anti-racism, and their followers aren't too happy! We break off into the controversy of Trumps Tweets about the Freshmen democrats. We discuss why the GOP and certain people will support traditions, schools and what ever they feel makes them feel like they belong or part of sometime of group. Sadly we had no answers or why people have no individual aspirations to be an individual.

News images of racial conflict are contradicted by the fact that society is becoming increasingly progressive and accepting of diversity. One key indicator of progress may be increasing instances of mediated interracial interaction, facilitated though a process of cultural voyeurism. Join Professor and Associate Director Osei Appiah in a conversion about this concept and more on the Voices of Excellence from the College of Arts and Sciences podcast, hosted by David Staley and available on Soundcloud and iTunes.
In this podcast episode, we read Genesis chapter 28 from the Common English Bible. A thorough investigation of the Bible's language and context reveals that God stands opposed to racism and sexism, as well as the violence that often results from prejudice.
Wake Up America! Today we are a country divided racially and in just about every other way possible. But hate will not define us, because that is not who the majority of us are. Although the voices of hate groups are very loud, the voices of those who seek equality and justice for all will drown them out. But, there are ISSUES that must be discussed and ACTIONS that must be taken. That is why The CWR Talk Network has assembled some of the great thinkers on how to overcome the racial divide in America for a special two hour live online virtual town hall meeting, on Tuesday - June 19th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM Central Daylight Time. Visit our website, CWRTalkNetwork.com and sign up for our newsletter for updates and more details. Don't miss this very special event on Tuesday - June 19th, designed to STOP the Hate by learning to BETTER COMMUNICATE. If you are interested in participating or sponsoring this event, contact us by email at CWRTalk@CWRMedia.net, that's CWRTalk@CWRMedia.net. Together, we can UNITE AMERICA!

the story of the syro-phoenician woman is one of persevering faith in the face of rejection, racial prejudice, and verbal insult.
My goal for our time together tonight is to increase our commitment to racial diversity and harmony. I want us to see that it is good, beautiful, right, and most importantly, God-glorifying when Christians of different skin colors, ethnicities, and races live life together, work together, relax together, laugh together, worship together, eat together in a spirit of love and unity. This focus is necessary as our country continues to struggle with real racial animosity. There is hope, and His name is Jesus.
There is a lot of talk about the economy all the time. Mostly all you hear is how Americans are out of work, or how racially biased the American economy is so black people can't get a job, or claims about unemployment and people on food stamps. None of it is evident here in Southern California! Every one drives a new car, there is no parking at the beach or shopping centers, there is an hour wait at restaurants, millions of dollars are spent every weekend going to the movies, or to the casino. There just isn't much wrong with the economy here. The young foreigner who works at the drive-thru at McDonalds where I go - I don't know what country she comes from - wears extensions in her hair and has gel nails! And a friend of mine who goes to the pool in the retirement community where I live says his neighbor has a caregiver from Figi and she makes $200 a day - paid for by the insurance company - to take care of this elderly lady neighbor. No wonder the caregiver was able to buy a brand new Ford Fiesta recently! So I am going to talk about jobs - and also about that magical mystical land of retirement which I just opened the door to! www.marcyann.com
With the recent events in Charlotte, the rise of Black Lives Matter and all issues pertaining to race relations in America, let's send the violet flame of the Holy Spirit to consume racial prejudice, violence and fear, real or contrived, as we also call for the dissolution of all political agendas and manipulations of issues and events.
