After we finish our current series on College Football we're going to dive into uncomfortable things about the America at 250 narrative - including events like the Ocoee Massacre and Rosewood. We will also compare the Bicentennial of 1976 to the America at 250 in 2026. Why is the storytelling so different now than it was then?

Actor Morris Chestnut joined the show to reflect on his remarkable career journey, beginning with his breakthrough role in the iconic 1991 film "Boyz n the Hood." Chestnut shared how that film launched his career and continues to impact audiences decades later, recounting a touching moment when a co-star on "Rosewood" watched the movie for the first time and was so emotionally moved by his character's death scene that she remained affected throughout the entire workday. The enduring resonance of the film, which authentically portrayed life in certain neighborhoods during that era, stands as a testament to its cultural significance and Chestnut's powerful performance. This first major break, which came after he had done a television adaptation of "A Night on the Town" that earned him his SAG card, set the foundation for a successful career spanning over three decades.Currently starring in the second season of Fox TV's "Rosewood," Chestnut plays a private pathologist who cleverly bends—but doesn't break—the rules to solve crimes and achieve justice. Working alongside the talented Lorraine Toussaint, whom he praised effusively as an amazing actress who elevates every scene, Chestnut described how his character has evolved over the show's 22-episode seasons. Initially prone to breaking rules and sticking out "like a sore thumb" at crime scenes, Rosewood has learned to blend more seamlessly with the police department while maintaining his characteristically optimistic view of people. However, recent storylines have challenged that optimism, particularly an episode where a woman he believed loved him actually robbed him, forcing his character to develop a more nuanced perspective on trust and human nature. Chestnut emphasized the importance of social media in modern entertainment, noting how he actively engages with fans across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, recognizing that direct interaction has become an essential part of an actor's career in today's digital landscape.

Support us on Patreon---From 1880 to 1930, life on Earth was reshaped in ways previously inconceivable. Nowhere was this transformation more total than in Florida. In a single generation, a peninsula hardly charted since the days of Ponce de Leon was molded into a testing ground for new modes of living and capital accumulation. This episode of Gladio Free Europe drains the marshy mysteries of time to understand how Florida, once the most foreign of all the contiguous territories, became perhaps the most fundamentally American state of all.Jackson (@GraceCathedralPark) returns to the show for a deep exploration of modern Florida history, running from the noble failures of Reconstruction up through the reassertion of Confederate control and the establishment of a new society, a unique and twisted marriage of northern venality with southern barbarity. Gilded Age robber-barons like Henry Flagler took to the waters for pleasure and for profit, turning the remote Sunshine State into a secret garden for the idle rich. Railroads soon connected Florida to the American mainland north and south, bringing both well-heeled investors and threadbare farmers down the peninsula. Poor whites in particular saw Florida as a beacon of the New South, where a man could make his fortune in land sales or the orange boom. But these newcomers had little interest in sharing their wealth with the African American residents of Florida, some of whose ancestors had been working the swampy soil since the Spanish era.Florida after Reconstruction experienced some of the worst racial terror anywhere in the United States, with an exceptionally high rate of lynchings and episodes of mass violence at Ocoee and Rosewood, where white mobs ransacked black neighborhoods and murdered dozens upon dozens. Then the swamps, once a refuge for escaped slaves and Seminole Indians, were drained out to the sea, paved over to make room for America's newest feat of social engineering: the suburb.By the Roaring '20s, Florida's economy primarily revolved around real estate and tourism. Middle-class Americans flocked to the new neighborhoods that sprawled across the ruined wetlands, many of which were designed for cars rather than people, and most of which were racially segregated. Meanwhile significant numbers of Cuban immigarnts migrated to the Gulf port of Tampa, turning a small fishing town into a cigar city that rivaled Havana.Transformations along these lines happened across the United States, particularly in other Sun Belt regions such as Arizona and Southern California. But nowhere else were these changes so extreme, so rapid, and so destructive... not only to the natural landscape upon which these plains were laid, but on the residents pushed aside to built this petty-bourgeois fantasy. The state has been a theme park since decades before the Mouse spread his ears. In many ways, Florida is its own kind of twisted intentional community, and perhaps America's most successful utopian experiment.

Here's something a little different from the usual CHP fare. It concerns a natural substance that's not too well-known outside of Asia, mainly because it's so dang expensive! Chénxiāng 沉香 or Agarwood as it's also known, grows inside the heartwood of certain Aquilaria trees. Chenxiang has a few interesting things about it and is often mentioned in Chinese literature. This episode includes a bunch of poems and a couple of chengyu's that all contain references to chénxiāng. While I was on the subject, I'm also mentioning five other trees that, while nowhere nearly as expensoive as chenxiang, were rare and precious enough to be driven to the brink of extinction. These four are Xiǎoyè Zǐtán 小叶紫檀, Hǎinán Huánghuālí 海南黄花梨, Lǎowō Dàhóng Suānzhī 老挝大红酸枝, Jīchìmù 鸡翅木, and Jīnsī Nánmù 金丝楠木.  You could have heard this episode three months earlier if you subscribed to the Official CHP Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheChinaHistoryPodcast CHP Premium: https://teacupmedia.supercast.com/ The Teacup Media Website: https://teacup.media/ Thanks to all of you for listening. When Fender switched the Telecaster from one-piece maple necks to rosewood fingerboards in 1959, the guitar's sound and feel changed forever. In this video, I take a close look at the history of rosewood-board Telecasters, why Fender made the switch, and what makes them unique.I'll also share my theory: it's not just the rosewood itself, but the stiffness of the rosewood plus maple neck construction that really changes the tone compared to an all-maple neck. That extra rigidity shapes the attack, sustain, and overall resonance of the guitar in a way you can feel as much as hear. I also take a look at the 59-style Custom Esquire that I play throughout the video.Support the show

Title: A Rosewood in Racist Ridgewood, QueensSummary:In July 2025, 24-year-old college student Jada McPherson, a Black woman, was physically attacked in Ridgewood, Queens over a parking space. The incident was caught on video and sparked outrage due to the racially charged nature of the assault and the lack of full accountability. The attackers included Andreea Dumitru, a white-presenting mother, and her transgender daughter, Sabrina Starman. Both were arrested, charged with third-degree assault and second-degree harassment, arraigned in Queens Criminal Court, and later released. They issued a public apology, citing stress and offering excuses—but notably failed to identify the third assailant, a white male who also violently participated in the attack and fled the scene before police arrived. To date, the third man remains unidentified and uncharged, despite his presence on video. Neither the NYPD's 104th Precinct nor the local DA has released further updates or public appeals to locate him.Implications:This attack has drawn comparisons to the 1923 Rosewood Massacre—not because of its scale, but because of its symbolic erasure and the systemic failure to hold all perpetrators accountable. Ridgewood, once a diverse enclave, has seen rising racial tensions and gentrification, making this assault a flashpoint in a broader pattern of targeted hostility toward Black residents. The absence of justice for the third attacker exposes bias in media coverage, law enforcement response, and public accountability, reminding New Yorkers that racism is not just history—it's still being lived.Let me know if you'd like this adapted into a script, caption, or spoken word version.#RidgewoodQueens#QueensParkingAttack#JadaMcPherson#RidgewoodAssault#ParkingSpotViolence#NYPD104Precinct#QueensNews#JusticeForJada

The heat is back on as the Born to Watch crew heads back to Beverly Hills for some high-octane hijinks, fast-talking cons, and serious shoulder-padded style. In this week's episode, Whitey, G-Man, and Dan on the Land revisit the 1987 sequel that turned up the dial on Eddie Murphy's star power with their Beverly Hills Cop II Review, directed by the ever-slick Tony Scott. From the moment Axel Foley slides behind the wheel of a Ferrari to the final shootout at the oil fields, the team breaks down why this neon-soaked action-comedy remains an ‘80s icon. They revel in Murphy's unmatched charisma, dissect the film's bold visual flair, and relive the glory of Harold Faltermeyer's synth-driven score and Bob Seger's anthemic “Shakedown.”Whitey goes deep on Tony Scott's signature aesthetic, the burnished orange hues, the stylized action, the hyper-stylized masculinity, while G-Man keeps it grounded with sharp takes on the film's functional but fun villainy and the lovable duo of Rosewood and Taggart. Meanwhile, Dan (pizza in hand) dishes on Eddie's behind-the-scenes power moves and the rise of “Eddie Murphy Productions,” proving this was the moment Axel Foley became Eddie Murphy's true alter ego.The boys aren't afraid to poke fun, either. From the inexplicable countdown robberies and oddly muscular strippers to baffling wardrobe coincidences (how did that blazer fit Taggart so well?), this episode's got more questions than an alphabet heist. And don't get them started on the extra at the Playboy Mansion doing an interpretive dance; he's earned a permanent spot in the Bad Running Ripley Hall of Fame. They also tip their hats to the era: the coke-fueled Simpson/Bruckheimer production madness, the bafflingly low Rotten Tomatoes scores despite the film being the second biggest box office hit of 1987, and the sheer power of a good montage scored by Seger. It's a masterclass in style-over-substance, but sometimes style is the substance. And of course, it wouldn't be a Born to Watch episode without diversions into North Shore memories, Magnum P.I. comparisons, and the origin story of Dan's legendary mustard shirt. If you know, you know. So, whether you're an ‘80s kid raised on VHS or just discovering that Beverly Hills had a crime problem solvable only by Detroit's finest, this episode is a full-throttle celebration of a sequel that doesn't just play the hits, it cranks them.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Beverly Hills Cop II better than the original? Does Tony Scott's style elevate the film or overshadow it? Which song hits harder: “Shakedown” or “The Heat Is On”?Leave us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#BornToWatch #BeverlyHillsCopII #EddieMurphy #TonyScott #80sMovies #ActionComedy #MoviePodcast #BobSeger #Shakedown #CultClassics #BeverlyHillsCop2

Rosewood tells the story of an independent Black township in Florida and the barbaric racial violence it faced in 1923, incited by a white woman's false accusation of assault and the Klan-assisted mob that followed. It's believed that over 100 Black citizens were murdered during the attacks, though the true number has never been properly counted.Despite the brutality, the legacy of Rosewood was forgotten—suppressed for nearly 60 years by both those who endured it and those who carried out the violence—until investigators uncovered the truth. That reckoning ultimately led to a 1994 vote in the Florida State Legislature to pay reparations to the survivors and their descendants. In Singleton's hands, the story of Rosewood becomes a rich, downtempo historical epic of properly grave tone; a film that never shies away from the violent realities of Black life in America's south in the early 20th century, the racial animus stoked by class anxieties and lingering slavery era resentments, and the complicity of white audiences and their ancestors in carrying out the violence that shaped our country's past and present. We discuss Singleton's inimitable capacity to juggle the rhythms of mainstream studio moviemaking with the formal radicalism of a Black story told with limited equivocation and compromise, as well as how blockbuster moviemaking primes us for absolution rather than honest reckoning. Then, we explore the rich character work within the film, how Singleton utlizies the embellishments of genre and archetype to root Blackness in a cinematic history linked conspicuously to white supremacy, and the refreshing stroke of having "no good white guys" in the movie. Finally, we relate the film to Coogler's latest, where it achieves a similar filmic mastery as well as where we feel it falls short of Singleton's vision.Read The Rosewood Massacre at Esquire MagazineWatch The 1983 Rosewood Massacre segment from 60 MinutesRead Robert Daniels on Sinners at Roger Ebert....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Send us a textWhat does it mean when tough men admit they cry? In this unexpectedly moving episode, four friends create a safe space to discuss vulnerability and the surprising things that trigger their emotions - from touching father-daughter stories to dog movies that destroy them. The conversation begins with a surprising admission: as these men have entered their 30s, 40s and 50s they've noticed themselves becoming more emotional. One host shares how listening to a story on the radio about a father following his daughter's school bus to ensure she could participate in a field trip nearly moved him to tears just retelling it. This opens the floodgates as each man confesses which movies have reduced them to tears - with dog films like Marley and Me, Old Yeller and Benji being universal triggers. The authenticity is palpable as one host admits to crying during a screening of Marley and Me hours before a football game, completely unconcerned about his upcoming athletic performance. The conversation takes a powerful turn when discussing films about racial injustice. Several hosts admit they've had to limit watching certain Black historical dramas because the emotional toll is too great. "Mississippi Burning," "Rosewood," and "Fruitvale Station" are cited as films that left them not just sad but angry and emotionally drained.Between these vulnerable moments, the group pivots to discussing current events - including a former Phoenix news anchor's massive PPP loan fraud scheme - and childhood nostalgic treats now turned into ice cream. Throughout these varied topics, the cohesive thread remains their willingness to be genuine with each other, creating a refreshingly honest podcast experience that challenges listeners to embrace their own vulnerability. If you've ever felt alone in your emotional responses or wondered if it's okay for men to show their feelings, this episode provides both validation and permission to embrace the full spectrum of human emotion. Thanks for listening to the Nobody's Talking Podcast. Bombay opens up discussion about this fish out of water tale of a Detroit cop with some stories about his family dealing with cops while living in Detroit. Then the fellas dive into the movie, which has a thin plot that is just an excuse to let prime Eddie Murphy riff, and let killer '80s songs rip. The inciting incident involves Murphy's Axel Foley being visited by a "hoodlum" friend from his past, and that leads to Andy recalling when he had to cut ties with an uninvited house guest. In the flick, that leads to Axel heading out to Beverly Hills where he befriends mismatched friends Taggart and Rosewood while talking himself out of countless situations by lying on the fly. Comedy does the heavy lifting, but there's some great action set pieces, a screaming irate police captain — which Hollywood needs to bring back as a trope — and infectious tunes peppered throughout. It closes with a freeze frame of Murphy making a goofy face into the camera before cueing up a Patti LaBelle track. Much like the film being discussed, the fellas do not take themselves very seriously this episode.
