#625: What do you do when you've reached financial independence? JL Collins says it depends entirely on your spending rate, not just your net worth. Collins joins us for part two of our conversation about what happens after you reach financial independence. He tackles the question of whether you should invest differently once you've "won the game." Someone with $5 million spending $100,000 per year sits in a completely different position than someone with the same amount spending $200,000 per year. The first person can afford to stay aggressive with stocks. The second person needs bonds to smooth the ride. Collins walks through his withdrawal strategy using his daughter as an example. She stepped away from corporate life in her early thirties and now follows an 80-20 stock/bond allocation. She pulls dividends from both funds into her checking account, covering about 2.5 percent of her target 4 percent withdrawal rate. Vanguard automatically sells shares to cover the remaining 1.5 percent. We cover Collins' thoughts on the 4 percent rule, which he calls extraordinarily conservative. He references Bill Bengen's research showing that 5 percent withdrawals succeed 86 percent of the time. Collins would take those odds to escape a soul-crushing job, especially since most financially independent people end up accidentally making money anyway. We discuss the tension between frugal habits that build wealth – and learning to spend money once you have it. Collins flies first class, but he drives a basic car. Collins explains why financially independent people often stay engaged with work — the problem was never work itself, but working without agency. Start Your Transformation Now In this episode of the Jim Fortin Podcast, Jim explores what it really means to experience freedom and independence—not just in the external world, but within ourselves. Building on his previous discussion about “seniority,” he reveals how true liberation comes from recognizing your spiritual authority, not from wealth, status, or nationality. If you've been seeking more ease in your finances, health, or life path, Jim makes a compelling case that reclaiming your seniority is the missing key. Diving deeper, Jim challenges cultural narratives around patriotism, belief systems, and identity that often mask as freedom but actually limit us. He unpacks how our upbringing and societal conditioning cause us to give away our power, and why managing your energy and attention is crucial for regaining it. With personal stories—including a raw account of his 39-month house build—and wisdom from his mentor Don Javier, this episode offers both spiritual insight and practical reflection on how to reclaim the independence we all crave. This episode is your wake-up call to stop seeking freedom externally and start remembering who you already are: a powerful soul with built-in seniority. If you're ready to step into true sovereignty, this is a must-listen. What You'll Discover in This Episode: Why We're All Born With Seniority (02:49) You don't have to earn freedom—you came into this life with cosmic power already built in. How Socialization and Domestication Strip Our Power (05:46) From childhood conditioning to national identity, we unknowingly give away our spiritual authority. Your Life is the Output of How You Manage Your Energy (09:11) Jim compares your life to a factory—what you create reflects how well you manage your seniority. A Personal Lesson: When Chaos Hijacked Jim's Power (11:59) Jim shares how his house-building process derailed his energy—and what brought him back on track. Freedom Begins With Attention, Not Action (15:13) Managing your attention in the 3D world is the gateway to reclaiming inner power. How Belief Systems and Patriotism Replace Seniority (21:04) Jim explains how societal labels and even religion can brand us, masking our true spiritual freedom. A Spiritual Person Asks Nothing of No One (26:53) What Don Javier taught Jim about sovereignty, asking Source—not society—for support. The Hidden Cost of Attachment (29:00) Freedom also means releasing the ego's grip—because what you cling to, controls you. Discovering Your True Power as Soul (32:00) Jim closes with a powerful invitation: Know yourself as soul, and you'll know true freedom. Listen, apply, and enjoy! Transformational Takeaway Your true independence isn't found in your passport, your bank account, or your job title. It's in your seniority—your deep knowing that you are soul, Source, and creator. When you stop letting beliefs, fears, and attachments define you, you'll remember the truth: you are free because you are. Let go of the need to control, release the illusions of security, and return to the inner sovereignty that was never lost—only forgotten. Freedom isn't out there. It's already within you. What if sadness, anger, and fear weren't problems—but sacred signals designed to lead you home?In this powerful and deeply resonant episode, I'm joined once again by beloved spiritual teacher and author Aaron Abke to explore the core teachings from his brand-new book, The Three Beliefs of Ego: A Surfer's Guide to Freedom.Aaron shares the raw and vulnerable backstory of his own spiritual awakening—and how a two-week taste of "heaven" led to a crash back into ego and suffering that changed everything. From that journey came the discovery of the ego's three core beliefs: lack, attachment, and control. And the realization that our emotional pain is actually a divine guidance system pointing to what's out of alignment.Together, we explore how to alchemize suffering into spiritual clarity, and why the ego—far from being the enemy—is actually the teacher that helps us evolve. We explore:The three beliefs of ego and the emotional patterns they createWhy sadness, anger, and fear are roadmaps—not roadblocksHow awakening often intensifies suffering (at first)The ego as a divine tool, not a flaw to fixEmotional alchemy, spiritual embodiment, and the path to true freedomThis is a deep and tender conversation on reclaiming your sovereignty, meeting your shadow with love, and remembering the truth of who you are.

God Reminds Those Who Want a Deeper Relationship with Him of His Expectations for Their Management of His Resources He Provided Them MESSAGE SUMMARY: As followers of Jesus, we want to go deeper in our personal relationship with God. However, God tells some of us that we must start being more responsible for the material things that He has provided before we can go deeper into spiritual revelations. Also, many of us, while seeking to know the Lord better, want to know His will in our lives and for the World. At the same time, we want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. In Mathew 6:19-21, Jesus is telling us that all that we have, which we tend to call our own, really comes from God. God has expectations for our good management of His resources in our personal relationship with Him: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.". God tells us that we are to be good managers of His gifts; however, in Luke 12:19-21, Jesus completes a parable about a man who thought that all his assets were his and not from God: “'And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”. Pointedly, God is telling us that if we cannot be responsible for the earthly treasures, which He has provided us, then how can we be responsible for His Spiritual treasures that He wants to provide us as we seek to deepen our personal relationship with Him? TODAY'S PRAYER: Most merciful God I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I might delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, because I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Anxiety. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit's fruit of Peace. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). Send us a topic!!!!What if your soul exists in multiple dimensions right now, living different lives simultaneously? In this mind-bending episode, we journey through the concept of reincarnation with a fascinating twist. Rather than the traditional view of sequential lives, Siobhan proposes that our souls might be spread across different dimensions at the same time—explaining why some people seem naturally gifted at skills they've never formally learned. The conversation takes a captivating turn when Lala shares her experiences with unusually vivid dreams where she physically feels sensations that linger after waking. Could these dreams be glimpses into our parallel lives in other dimensions? We explore how this might explain déjà vu, unexpected talents, and even why some people feel they aren't living the life they're "supposed" to be living. This theory connects deeply with the multiverse concept, suggesting that perhaps what we imagine as fiction could be our soul's experience in another dimension. We also tackle the profound question of how we would live if we discovered this was our final incarnation. This leads to vulnerable reflections on fulfillment, purpose, and faith, as Lala opens up about her spiritual journey and the challenges of discovering her divine purpose. The discussion weaves through family dynamics, spiritual protection, and the delicate balance between independence and allowing others to help us. Whether you're a spiritual seeker, science fiction enthusiast, or simply curious about life's bigger questions, this conversation offers fresh perspectives on human existence and consciousness that will leave you questioning reality in the best possible way.Subscribe to Talk That Shit with the Melvins for more thought-provoking conversations that blend the spiritual with the everyday, and let us know your thoughts on parallel dimensions and reincarnation in the comments!Support the show

America faces a critical shortage that threatens our future—not just of workers, but of citizens who value productive labor and possess the skills to perform it. Drawing from Jeffrey A. Tucker's analysis, we examine how we've created generations that prefer entertainment consumption over meaningful contribution, and why traditional immigration isn't the solution. At the heart of this crisis lies our misguided educational approach. We keep children in classrooms for far too long, teaching them little of practical value while denying them opportunities to develop real-world skills. When FDR banned child labor in 1936, he unintentionally eliminated critical entry points for teenagers to develop work ethic and practical experience. Today's youth enter adulthood with theoretical knowledge but minimal practical capability. This problem reflects our cultural priorities. We celebrate entertainers, athletes, and social media influencers while overlooking the true heroes—the skilled tradespeople, dedicated parents, and ordinary citizens who faithfully fulfill their responsibilities. Our children inevitably absorb these values, assuming that fame trumps meaningful contribution. Meanwhile, an expansive welfare system has removed the necessity of work for many, creating generations with diminished incentive to develop marketable skills. Most fundamentally, this represents a spiritual crisis. America's greatness has always stemmed from its relationship with God and Jesus Christ—not from material wealth or technological advancement. As John Quincy Adams noted, the "highest glory of the American Revolution" was connecting "in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity." When we sever this connection, we lose the spiritual foundation that gives meaning to work and responsibility. The solution begins with examining our own priorities. What are you giving your time to? Your actions reveal your true values more accurately than your words. As parents, are we modeling productivity and responsibility? As citizens, are we honoring those who contribute meaningfully rather than those who merely entertain? Our national renewal depends on rediscovering the dignity of work, the importance of practical skills, and the spiritual foundation that makes America truly great.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe
Just got back from three and a half weeks in Europe (still not sure what time zone I'm in), and Aaron Simmons and I dove straight into the deep end of why democracy feels like it's falling apart. We're wrestling with this massive question: what do you do when reason-giving just seems to fail completely - when people either dismiss everyone who disagrees as morally bankrupt, or assume their own views are so obviously correct that any pushback must be irrational? We wandered through everything from whether I should keep eating at this barbecue place covered in MAGA signs (still haven't decided), to how 81% of white evangelicals support the least Christian president we've ever had, to whether Western civilization can survive without its Christian roots, with a delightful detour into heavy metal pit ethics because apparently that's how we process political theory now. The whole conversation convinced us we need more voices thinking about these tensions together, which is why we're launching this Democracy in Tension summit where a bunch of our philosopher and theologian friends will tackle these questions from different angles - because honestly, Aaron and I don't have answers, but we're pretty sure the questions matter enough to keep wrestling with them, even if it makes us uncomfortable about where we get our barbecue. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube ONLINE SUMMIT: Democracy in Tension - NAVIGATING THE INTERLOCKING CRISES OF DEMOCRACY AND RELIGION Democracy today faces profound challenges – polarization, inequality, populist authoritarianism, and widespread cynicism are eroding the foundations of democratic life. Yet, what if democracy's greatest strength lies not in eliminating these tensions, but in productively embracing them? The summit will navigate the complex terrain between political equality and social justice, liberal freedom and democratic sovereignty, and ethical demands and political action. Hey, it's Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul and we have a new book I'm very passionate about. It's all about how Self-Care Isn't Selfish. This is such an important truth for us all to embrace. I'm sure you've been through plenty of things where you have NOT put yourself first, where you didn't even put yourself on your to-do list AT ALL. And that's not good. It's bad for you and it's bad for all the people you take care of too. Because you're no good to them if you're frazzled and exhausted and starting to get resentful because your needs are not being addressed. Learn more about your ad choices.
