Last week, we talked about healing—the kind that doesn't just change us, but changes the world. The healing that makes us more kind, more loving, more empathetic. But here's the truth: while we're doing this sacred work, there is a battle raging around us. A relentless stream of fear, attacks, and psychological warfare designed to wear us down, to make us give up hope.So how do we stand strong in the middle of all that? How do we keep our hearts from breaking under the weight of it?Today, I have a story for you. It's not just powerful—it's one of the most powerful stories I've ever heard about finding courage, resilience, and unshakable love in the face of fear. You do not want to miss this.Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

This week we continue our journey through the book of Ephesians. In Chapter 4 Paul shifts gears from the understanding of who we are in Christ to what we do now as new creations in Christ. Paul's attention is focused on unity within the community of believers as an expression of the love of God. How will such a diverse group of people hold onto unity and continue to love one another in the likeness of Christ? This is not possible in our own strength and understanding, therefore grace gifts were given to the church to empower us to love another and to pursue good deeds. We can do our own work and move ourselves into more spiritual openness and maturity, to grow and do the healing work that's inside of us to do. And that's no small thing! Christine Jorgensen began gender reassignment surgery in Copenhagen on 24th September 1951. The New York Daily News later heralded the event with a headline splash - “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty!” - thereby creating America's first transgender celebrity. Writing to friends, she said: “As you can see by the enclosed photos, taken just before the operation, I have changed a great deal. But it is the other changes that are so much more important. Remember the shy, miserable person who left America? Well, that person is no more and, as you can see, I'm in marvellous spirits.” In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how surprisingly tolerant her parents and much of the media were; how she was strong-armed into showbiz but used the notoriety to campaign for trans rights; and reveal that - amongst her many memoirs - she also penned a Scandinavian cookbook... In 2020, Idaho made headlines as the first state to ban transgender women from women's sports. The ban sparked a five-year legal battle led by Boise State student-athlete Lindsay Hecox that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Now, Hecox is removing herself from the case — but is this the end of the story? Boise State Public Radio reporter and contributor James Dawson has been following the story since it began, and is here to help us understand how Idaho's ban became the blueprint for anti-trans athlete policies nationally. Compassion, empathy, and science have all been under rapid-fire attack during the second Trump Administration. This is especially true towards Queer and Transgender communities, though other minority communities within the United States are also being targeted. Dr. Matthew D. Skinta, PhD, ABPP, is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Affiliated Faculty of Women and Gender Studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He helped us better understand what areas of the science community are being targeted, what research projects have been cancelled, and on what grounds. We also discussed the discrimination against individuals who identify with diversity, equity, and inclusion principles surrounding topics of gender and gender nonconformity. We talked about “conversion therapy” which attempts to brainwash folks to believe they are straight and how it doesn't work. Matthew and I met at a Harvard conference for psychedelic assisted therapy. This was a fascinating interview. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

n this premiere episode of Season Five, co-hosts Peterson Toscano (he/him) and Sweet Miche (they/them) explore the urgent question: How do we balance peace and protest in today's world? Prophetic Voices for Troubled Times Australian Friend Greg Rolles shares his experiences with nonviolent direct action, police intimidation, and the risks of faithful disobedience. Arrested more than 25 times for his activism, Greg challenges Quakers to move beyond polite pacifism. “Peace is not the same as passivity. We think that peace is about being polite and nice and being quiet in public spaces. But peace is proactive, and it calls us to take action and take risk.” —Greg Rolles Greg's article We Are Having an Effect: The Necessity of Spiritual Resistance in Climate and Justice Activism appears in the September 2025 issue of Friends Journal (add link to article at FriendsJournal.org). You can also watch the extended interview on the Friends Journal YouTube channel (insert hyperlink). Quaker Renewal in a Fast-Moving World Jade Rockwell, pastor at West Elkton Friends Meeting in Ohio, lifts up the role of renewal and revival in Quaker practice today. “Our emphasis has shifted in the 21st century more towards being a people called to action. We're living in a time when inaction is risky. If we're not able to respond to our world, bad things can happen—and we may be morally responsible if we aren't able to be active.” —Jade Rockwell You can find more of Jade's ministry in the QuakerSpeak video, “Transforming Quakerism in Troubling Times” at QuakerSpeak.com or on the QuakerSpeak YouTube channel. Anger, Grief, and Action This month's Friends Journal book review features Richard Rohr's The Tears of Things: Prophetic Wisdom for an Age of Outrage (Convergent Books). Rohr highlights how the anger of prophets like Amos and Jeremiah matures into grief, then into transformative action. Read Wendy Cooler's full review at FriendsJournal.org (insert hyperlink). Send us a textDr. Patrick Hunter, a pediatrician, spoke with Liz Collin on her podcast about his opposition to gender care for kids as a “concerned pediatrician—and father.”Among the many issues he discussed with Collin, Dr. Hunter said, “I've seen way too many children harmed by this ideology... and it's not evidence based. It's not science based. It's not rational.”Dr. Hunter encouraged parents to take a stand: “It's going to take parents to stand up to schools. It's going to take parents to stand up to physicians," he said.(This interview was recorded before the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025.)Donate to Alpha News — https://alphanews.revv.co/donate-todayAlpha News — https://AlphaNews.orgSupport the show
