The Polish Heritage Center, 13909 N. Podczas rozmowy z panią minister zdrowia w naszym radiu poruszono temat kolejek do lekarzy i prób ich likwidacji. Niepotrzebnie się martwimy, że kolejki znikną. Ja od trzydziestu lat bez dwóch i pół piszę felietony, i w tym czasie nie takie tuzy obiecywały likwidację kolejek. Jak do tej pory kolejki do lekarzy wygrywały z każdym rządem. I dobrze. Bo kolejki do lekarzy są częścią naszego dziedzictwa narodowego, jak Wawel czy oberek.

Alumnado de IES de Canido acaba de retornar de Polonia, país al que viajaron a principios de mes participando, una vez más, en un Erasmus dentro del proyecto Zero Waste, Cero Residuos, en el que vienen entrando desde hace tiempo. En esta ocasión el viaje les permitió visitar Cracovia, donde estuvieron en la plaza Rynek Glowny, el castillo de Wawel y el precioso templo de la denominada Basílica Mariacka. Tras establecer su residencia en Tychy, al lado del lago Paprocany, fueron recibidos por la directora del centro con el que colaboran en el Erasmus y también por el alcalde de Tychy. Realizando actividades con los compañeros polacos, aprendieron una técnica para encerar tela y convertirla en envoltorio reutilizable de acuerdo con el proyecto Zero Waste en el que trabajan. A lo largo de su estancia tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar un lugar que tiene el reconocimiento de Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Se trata del Museo del Croché en Koniaków, donde les explicaron como empezó todo y el alcance que tiene actualmente (incluido en el libro Guinness y con encargos por parte de algunas celebridades como Lady Gaga entre otras). El viaje les permitió hacer un recorrido por las montañas Beskidy donde comparten frontera tres países: Polonia, Eslovaquia y República Checa, por lo que también presumen de haber estado en un solo día en tres países. Sabemos que también visitaron Auschwitz, aunque será hoy en Radio Voz Ferrol, donde darán cuenta de todo lo que han visto y aprendido en este estupendo viaje de la mano de su profesora Maca Torres, que un año más acompañó al alumnado.

To już szósta książka Doroty, która zadebiutuje 25 września. Królowa Bona, Włoszka, wywodząca się ze znamienitego rodu Sforzów, wychodząc za mąż za króla Zygmunta Starego, przywiozła do Polski nie tylko warzywa (nazwane włoszczyzną), ale też nie znane dotąd nad Wisłą piękne i drogie stroje. WALKING WITH THE SAINTS l FEAST OF ST. CASIMIR, PATRON SAINT OF POLAND l MARCH 4 How many in our present society would consider royal nobility as unnecessary? Only someone destined by God to a life of virtues and holiness, like our saint for today, who considered royalty as extravagance. Let us ponder on the life of the Prince of Poland, son of King Casimir IV and Grand Duke of Lithuania and Queen Elizabeth of Austria. Casimir Jagiellon was born on October 3, 1458 in the Castle of Wawel, Krakow, Kingdom of Poland, and was brought up as a pious and devout Christian by his devout parents. He and his brothers studied under the tutorship of a priest and historian Fr. John Dlugosz, whose deep piety and political knowledge influenced their life. The young prince, considered the wealth and royal luxury as unreasonable and a pressure. Instead of enjoying the luxury of the court, he chose a life of devotion and asceticism. He wore simple clothes with a hair shirt underneath, spend much time in prayer and meditation on the sufferings of Jesus, and would often sleep on the ground as an act of penance. He was also very concerned of the poor in the kingdom and was deeply compassionate to those who were suffering. He even gave many of his possessions to the poor. Casimir was only 13 years old when the Hungarians asked his father to make him king in their country. Although he was hesitant, he was encouraged to help the Hungarians, who were fighting against the Turks. He accepted the offer, was crowned king, and received help from his father, but he was not successful so he returned to Poland. His father was so mad at him for his failure. After his return, he resumed his studies with Dlugosz and learned about politics from his father. In 1479, his father left Poland to attend to some state affairs in Lithuania, and left him in charge of the kingdom from 1481 to 1483. Advisers of the king and of the royal court urged him to marry, but he preferred to live a single and celibate life and spent his time in the service of God and the people of the kingdom. Casimir completed his studies at age 16 and spent most of his time with his father. In 1476, he accompanied his father to Prussia to resolve a conflict, then he moved to Vilnius. From 1479 to 1484 King Casimir attended to the affairs of Lithuania. The King tried to arrange Casimir's marriage to the daughter of Emperor Frederick III, but he refused and preferred to remain celibate. After experiencing symptoms of tuberculosis, he foresaw that he was soon going to die. He prepared himself by deepening his devotion to God and to his neighbor. He was deeply devoted to the Virgin Mother of God and his favorite song was “Daily, Daily, Sing to Mary.” He died while on his way to Lithuania on March 4, 1484, and was buried at the Vilnius cathedral with the copy of his favorite song. Pope Adrian VII canonized him in 1522. He is the patron saint of Poland, Lithuania and of young people Many churches and chapels were built in his honor: in Poland, Lithuania, United States, Canada, United Kingdom. The Sisters of Saint Casimir are active even now in the United States. There are also centers of learning named after him, and we have a few in the Philippines. In 1984, Pope John Paul II addressed Lithuanian pilgrims commemorating the 500th anniversary of St. Casimir's death said: “The Church proclaimed Casimir a saint and place him before us not only to be venerated but also that we might imitate his heroic virtues and follow his examples. His witness of great faith and fervent piety continues to have special meaning for us today. His life of purity beckons you to practice your faith with courage and zeal, to reject the deceptive attractions of modern permissive society, and to live your convictions with fearless confidence and joy.” He “embraced a life of celibacy, submitted himself humbly to God's will in all things, devoted himself with tender love to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

La población era muy bella y sus habitantes vivían muy felices, pero había un temor constante para todo ellos. En lo alto de la colina había una cueva que era habitada por un ser terrible y feroz. Este ser era una dragón que había viajado desde las tierras del norte y había encontrado aquella cueva donde vivir. Debido a que este dragón era muy grande necesitaba comer mucho todos los días y decidio que iba a aterrorizar a los habitantes de la población cercana para que ellos le suministraran la comida. Asi que una mañana el dragón salió de su cueva y volando sobre aquel pequeño pueblo aterrizo en la plaza misma del pueblo. Y allí todos los habitantes vieron como un ser enorme, con escamas resplandecientes que brillaban bajo la luz del sol, garras con grandes dedos que se movían aterrorizando a todos los presentes , una cola con grandes puntas en forma de abanico, una enorme cabeza coronada de miles de puas y  ojos que lanzaban chispas de fuego. El dragón viendo a los habitantes temblar de susto les dijo. Habitantes del pueblo. Yo soy el más fiero dragón de todas estas tierras y como podrán ver mi cuerpo requiere mucha alimentación. Para comer yo tengo dos opciones, venir al pueblo todos los días y devorar algunos de ustedes o permitir que ustedes me sirvan como ofrenda diaria 20 carneros bien gordos y jugosos. La decisión es de ustedes…. Los habitantes asustados se reunieron y entre todos decidieron que lo mejor era sacrificar las ovejas y los carneros que tuvieran para evitar que aquel dragón alado se acercara al pueblo y comenzara a devorar a todos y cada uno de los habitantes. Todos aceptaron que eso era lo mejor y enviaron un grupo de representantes a hablar con el dragón en la cueva en lo alto de la colina wawel. Entro los representantes había un zapatero que era conocido por su ingenio y su inteligencia. Cuando llegaron a la cueva, el dragón comodamente recostado contra las paredes de la cueva los recibió y los escucho decir que ellos le traerían los carneros y las ovejas puntualmente cuando el sol estuviera en lo más alto del cielo. Y así el podría comer a voluntad. El único de los enviados por el pueblo que no dijo ninguna palabra fue el zapatero que simplemente observaba atentamente al dragón  y se dio cuenta que este dragón no tenia muy buena capacidad para oler ya que cuando ellos entraban a la cueva oscura el dragón no se daba cuenta de su presencia inicialmente. Al otro día puntualmente los enviados del pueblo comenzaron a llevar los carneros y las ovejas, pero a medida que pasaban los días se empezaron a dar cuenta que no tenían muchas ovejas y carneros y que cada que le llevaban los 20 animales el numero de animales disponibles se hacia cada vez menor. Comenzaron a viajar a los pueblos cercanos en busca de nuevos animales y en uno de esos viajes el zapatero que se llamaba Krak paso por un lugar que estaba lleno de un material amarillo y que producia un olor terriblemente fuerte. Todos conocían este material como sulfuro y era un material que provenia de la salidas de los volcanes y que era muy fuerte al gusto. El zapatero lleno una carroza de aquel material y sin explicar porque lo llevo al pueblo. Al otro día cuando los habitantes comenzaban a matar las ovejas y los carneros para llevárselos al dragón, lleno estos animales de sulfuro y el mismo decidio llevarlos a donde estaba el dragón.Con su carruaje lleno de ovejas y carneros llenos de sulfuro por dentro y sabiendo que el dragón no podría detectar el olor del sulfuro, llego a la cueva y depositando los animales en el suelo, llamo al dragón y rápidament

Czy sprawa Stanisława Pyjasa to mit? Rozmawiają Cezary Łazarewicz, Marcin Zaremba i Jarosław Kuisz. Rano 7 maja 1977 roku w kamienicy przy Szewskiej w Krakowie znaleziono zwłoki mężczyzny. Był nim Stanisław Pyjas – student polonistyki, zaangażowany w działalność nieformalnej grupy studenckiej na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim, która nawiązała kontakt z Komitetem Obrony Robotników i szybko stała się obiektem rozpracowania przez Służbę Bezpieczeństwa. Uczestnicy grupy byli zastraszani, inwigilowani, a nawet umieszczono pośród nich tajnych informatorów. Dlatego też podejrzenia o spowodowanie śmierci Pyjasa od razu padły na funkcjonariuszy bezpieki. W niedzielę 15 maja z inicjatywy przyjaciół Staszka na ulice miasta tłumnie wyszli studenci i jego mieszkańcy. W żałobnym marszu, nazwanym później czarnym, ruszyli pod Wawel, gdzie powołano Studencki Komitet Solidarności, pierwszą jawną opozycyjną organizację studencką w Krakowie.

ST. CASIMIR l PATRON SAINT OF POLAND, LITHUANIA AND OF YOUNG PEOPLE. Feast day: March 4 How many in our present society would consider royal nobility as unnecessary? Only someone destined by God to a life of virtues and holiness, like our saint for today, who considered royalty as extravagance. Let us ponder on the life of the Prince of Poland, son of King Casimir IV and Grand Duke of Lithuania and Queen Elizabeth of Austria. Casimir Jagiellon was born on October 3, 1458 in the Castle of Wawel, Krakow, Kingdom of Poland, and was brought up as a pious and devout Christian by his devout parents. He and his brothers studied under the tutorship of a priest and historian Fr. John Dlugosz, whose deep piety and political knowledge influenced their life. The young prince, considered the wealth and royal luxury as unreasonable and a pressure. Instead of enjoying the luxury of the court, he chose a life of devotion and asceticism. He wore simple clothes with a hair shirt underneath, spend much time in prayer and meditation on the sufferings of Jesus, and would often sleep on the ground as an act of penance. He was also very concerned of the poor in the kingdom and was deeply compassionate to those who were suffering. He even gave many of his possessions to the poor.Casimir was only 13 years old when the Hungarians asked his father to make him king in their country. Although he was hesitant, he was encouraged to help the Hungarians, who were fighting against the Turks. He accepted the offer, was crowned king, and received help from his father, but he was not successful so he returned to Poland. His father was so mad at him for his failure. After his return, he resumed his studies with Dlugosz and learned about politics from his father. In 1479, his father left Poland to attend to some state affairs in Lithuania, and left him in charge of the kingdom from 1481 to 1483. Advisers of the king and of the royal court urged him to marry, but he preferred to live a single and celibate life and spent his time in the service of God and the people of the kingdom. Casimir completed his studies at age 16 and spent most of his time with his father. In 1476, he accompanied his father to Prussia to resolve a conflict, then he moved to Vilnius. From 1479 to 1484 King Casimir attended to the affairs of Lithuania. The King tried to arrange Casimir's marriage to the daughter of Emperor Frederick III, but he refused and preferred to remain celibate. After experiencing symptoms of tuberculosis, he foresaw that he was soon going to die. He prepared himself by deepening his devotion to God and to his neighbor. He was deeply devoted to the Virgin Mother of God and his favorite song was “Daily, Daily, Sing to Mary.” He died while on his way to Lithuania on March 4, 1484, and was buried at the Vilnius cathedral with the copy of his favorite song. Pope Adrian VII canonized him in 1522. He is the patron saint of Poland, Lithuania and of young people.Many churches and chapels were built in his honor: in Poland, Lithuania, United States, Canada and United Kingdom. The Sisters of Saint Casimir are active even now in the United States. There are also centers of learning named after him, and we have a few in the Philippines. In 1984, Pope John Paul II addressed Lithuanian pilgrims commemorating the 500thanniversary of St. Casimir's death he said: “The Church proclaimed Casimir a saint and place him before us not only to be venerated but also that we might imitate his heroic virtues and follow his examples. His witness of great faith and fervent piety continues to have special meaning for us today. His life of purity beckons you to practice your faith with courage and zeal, to reject the deceptive attractions of modern permissive society, and to live your convictions with fearless confidence and joy.”

- Kolejne piętra obejmuje remont, największy projekt konserwatorski to parter północnego skrzydła. Tam będzie nowy skarbiec koronny, nowa, stała ekspozycja. Udostępnimy na nowo zaaranżowane przestrzenie I i II piętra, arcydzieła z Kolekcji Lanckorońskich przyjadą do nas z całego świata - tak o planach na 2022 rok mówił prof. Andrzej Betlej, dyrektor Zamku Królewskiego na Wawelu.

- Przeglądając archiwalia w naszym wawelskim archiwum, zauważam, że obraz namalowany w 1900 roku przez Leona Wyczółkowskiego był przechowywany w magazynie do roku 1939, kiedy wybuchła wojna i "Wiejska dziewczyna w żółtej chuście" zniknęła - mówiła w Dwójce Agnieszka Janczyk, kurator zbiorów Prac na Papierze Zamku Królewskiego na Wawelu.

In the first season we chart the journey of the design and build of a 1-8 scale Lego model of the Bugatti Chiron in 9 episodes. And in the second season for The LEGO Group, I went to the large Lego factory in Kladno, Czech Republic, where they produce all the big scale models for the LEGOLAND Parks and big stores around the world. In the second season of the podcast series, we follow the built of a 1-1 life-size LEGO model of the Bugatti Chiron. After Czech Republic, I travelled to Rotterdam, Netherlands, for a travel bloggers conference called Traverse, before returning home to Denmark to visit my family, attend a travel podcast conference in Copenhagen, and meet with clients. I then travelled to Cannes, France, to attend the Cannes Lions festival and meet more clients and network/”shmooze”. After that Wolfsburg, Germany, was next where I visited the Volkswagen headquarters as part of my work with the LEGO Technic Podcast. Here where we tested the Bugatti Chiron LEGO model on the test track. They shot a film while I was standing at the side of the road with my microphone, recording stuff for the podcast. Phew, loads of flights! Anyway, after my business was concluded, I made my way to Kraków and this is where this episode begins! EXPLORING KRAKÓW My arrival in Kraków happened to coincide with the day the Polish national football team played against Colombia in their Group H match of the 2018 FIFA Football World Cup in Russia. Unfortunately, the Polish team lost the game 3-0 which spelt the end of the World Cup hopes.  On Sunday morning, I decided to take a much-needed break from a week-long podcast editing binge to take a Free Walking Tour of the old town. You know how much I love a tour like this; they are a really great way to get to know more about a new city and provide you with ways to meet locals and fellow travellers as well. After a quick online search, I decided to go with Walkative! Free Walking Tour. Our tour guide's name was Thomasz but he is known better by his many nicknames: Calen, Big Tom, The Giant. He's really tall, which apart from his bald head and goatee, is his most defining feature: he is the one and only 2 metre (6ft7) tall guide in Kraków. He is born and raised in Kraków and graduated from Jagiellonian University with history as his major subject. His thesis was on Kraków, so he's the perfect person to talk to us about the old town of Kraków. He is a remarkable tour guide who mixes warmth, humour, and interesting facts into his tours to create a magical experience. Here's what I remember about Thomasz' anecdotes about his home city:   FACTS ABOUT WHERE WE ARE Kraków's entire old town, including Wawel castle, the market square, and the Jewish district, was one of the first sites to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List when it was created in 1978. In 2013, Lonely Planet voted Kraków Square the best market square in the world. It's called Rynek Główny in Polish and it's also the largest medieval town square in Europe. It's a square space surrounded by historic townhouses and churches. The centre of the square is dominated by Cloth Hall and it's stunning two towers.  There's a knife that hangs from a rope on the wall of Cloth Hall. There is a legend that tells the story of the two brothers who built the towers. When one of them realised that his tower could not be as tall as this bothers' due to weak foundations, he killed his brother with that very knife out of envy. The knife hangs there as a reminder of humbleness. According to Polish folklore, a dragon lived at the foot of Wawel Hill which required regular offerings of livestock, so it didn't end up eating the local human inhabitants. The dragon was killed either by the sons of the city's founder, King Krakus, or by a cobbler's apprentice, depending on who is telling the tale. There is now a statue of the Dragon of Wawel Hill close to Wawel Castle. It's a bit of an attraction because it breathes fire every few minutes, thanks to a natural gas nozzle installed in the sculpture's mouth. THOMASZ THE GIANT TOUR GUIDE We finished the walking tour at Wawel Castle and Thomasz was kind enough to spend a little extra time with me for a chat.  According to Walkative! Free Walking Tour's website, Big Tom is a huge fan of British comedy and coffee and was a full-time guide to his children before becoming part of the Walkative! team in 2015.  We start our conversation with Thomasz giving me a quick grammar and pronunciation lesson regarding the Slavik roots of his name, telling me about the Portuguese-like vowels in Polish being short and flat, and others being long and deep. He wonderfully ties this into ideas about the history of language and culture around Europe, which only served to show how vast his knowledge spans. When I asked him why people come to visit Kraków, he responded in a typical Thomasz manner. “There's a difference between why people come here and why I think people should come here” he begins.  “People come to Kraków because of the recent popularity of Eastern European cities, like Prague for example. In the early 2000's, there was a significant push across Europe to attract travellers to Prague. Luckily, Kraków is very close to Prague which meant that over time, people started adding Kraków to their travel itinerary on the way to or from Prague. Once here, people realise just how incredible these almost untouched Eastern European cities are. I believe Slovenia will experience the next ‘burst' in popularity for the same reasons”. “Tourism has changed the way Polish people think about their country, giving them a renewed passion for their culture by realise what it means to have a multicultural society” he says. Thomasz tells me that the city of Kraków (and it's Old Town in particular) is unique and lucky in the sense that it is a very intact city compared to war-torn Warsaw, where over 80% of the city was flattened. Warsaw was rebuilt, and Kraków only ‘renovated' and still has the country's history preserved in its aged walls. TAKE A TOUR OF KRAKOW Walkative! Historia, którą dziś Wam opowiem, działa się właśnie w mieście Krakowie. W grodzie pośrodku zamek wspaniały, a wokół wielkie, obronne wały. Ulice pełne wszelkiego ruchu, mieszczan, rycerzy, kupców, pastuchów. Szeroka rzeka gród ten opływa, każdy tę rzekę Wisłą nazywa. Widok Krakowa wszystkich zachwyca, ze wzgórza Wawel słynie stolica. A tuż pod miastem mieści się grota, straszny w niej zaduch, straszna duchota. Śpi tam od wieków wielkie smoczysko, nikt nawet nie wie, że jest tak blisko. Aż tutaj nagle- trzęsienie ziemi! Mieszkańcy miasta są przerażeni. Spod wzgórza lecą straszne opary, to smok wyłazi ze swej pieczary. Ogromne cielsko, łuski zielone, na skrzydłach smok leci w grodu stronę. Wszystkich ogarnia wielka panika, każdy do domu prędko umyka. Smok ryknął z góry straszliwym głosem: "Dłużej hałasów waszych nie zniosę! Ponieważ żeście mnie obudzili, będziecie za to słono płacili!". Smok wnet zażądał skrzyń złota dwieście, połowy owiec, co były w mieście. A zaraz potem zjadł cztery krowy, mieli z nim wszyscy urwanie głowy. Król, widząc straszne smoka działanie, zwołał na zamku wielkie zebranie. Za łeb poczwary da wnet nagrodę, swej córki rękę i na ślub zgodę. Zaraz się zbiegło wielu rycerzy, każdy z nich w bestię swą kopią mierzy. Na nic się jednak walka nie zdaje, od smoka lanie każdy dostaje. Wszystko zmieniło przyjście Dratewki: "Walka ze smokiem to nie przelewki. Aby pokonać takiego gada, pomysł mieć dobry raczej wypada." Wziął się za pracę z samego rana i z worka siana zrobił barana. Przyszył mu własny kożuch wełniany, gdyż taki właśnie mają barany. Co w środek wepchnął- to niespodzianka, ruszył do smoka z kopią baranka. gdy taki przysmak stanął przed grotą, smok wnet go połknął z wielką ochotą. Wtem gardziel smoka ognisko pali, gad wściekły z bólu na grzbiet się wali. Zaraz łeb nurza w Wisły głębinach, przynęta z siarki, to jest przyczyna. Smok pije ciągle, przestać nie może, już wody wypił calutkie morze. Nagle się rozległ huk wielki wokół, to sam smok wybuchł- nareszcie spokój! Gdy wrócił Szewczyk, wszędzie wiwaty, wołają wszyscy: "To chwat nad chwaty!". I zaraz ślub wziął z księżniczką lubą, w Krakowie żyli szczęśliwie, długo...
