We continue David Lynch: Between Two Worlds with a journey into the nightmarish echo chamber of LOST HIGHWAY — a film that fractures time, identity, and genre into something both terrifying and seductive. Released in 1997, LOST HIGHWAY marked a turning point for Lynch: a return to darker, more experimental storytelling after TWIN PEAKS and FIRE WALK WITH ME alienated mainstream audiences. With a pulsing industrial score, a story co-written by WILD AT HEART novelist Barry Gifford, and one of the creepiest villains ever put to screen, Lynch delivered a noir-horror hybrid that confused critics but inspired a new generation of filmmakers and fans. In this episode, we begin our deep dive into the making of the film. We explore how Lynch's growing disillusionment with Hollywood, a surprising creative partnership with Barry Gifford, and a growing interest in identity and psychological fragmentation laid the groundwork for what would become one of the director's most enigmatic films. From the film's origins through its complex casting choices, this is the story of how LOST HIGHWAY began.

In the conclusion of our two-part deep dive into TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME, we trace the turbulent production, Cannes premiere, and long road to reevaluation that has led some to now call it David Lynch's greatest work. This episode covers the shoot itself — from on-set tension and cut scenes to the mysterious ‘Missing Pieces' — as well as the hostile reception the film received upon release and how its legacy has shifted dramatically in the decades since. Along the way, we explore how FIRE WALK WITH ME reframed the world of Twin Peaks, restored Laura Palmer's voice, and laid the groundwork for everything Lynch would explore next.

We're kicking off our new series, David Lynch: Between Two Worlds, where we explore the dream logic, fractured identities, and spiritual mysteries of Lynch's later career — beginning with his polarizing Twin Peaks prequel, FIRE WALK WITH ME. In this first of our two-part deep dive, we explore how Lynch returned to Twin Peaks after its cancellation — and how his original vision for a Twin Peaks movie evolved into something far darker and more personal. We'll track the story from the series' troubled end through the film's early development, the departure of co-creator Mark Frost, the decision to center Laura Palmer's final days, and the winding, often surreal path the script took. We also dive into Lynch's inspiration, his collaboration with new and returning cast members, and the emotional weight of revisiting the trauma at the heart of the original series — this time from Laura's perspective.

Poppy and Kris have an honest conversation about writing with neurodivergence and other health issues, and Poppy gives the background of her latest novel, Battle of the Bookshops. Poppy Alexander is the author of The Littlest Library, Storybook Ending, and 25 Days 'Til Christmas. She wrote her first book when she was five. There was a long gap in her writing career while she was at school, and after studying classical music at university, she decided the world of music was better off without her and took up public relations, campaigning, political lobbying, and a bit of journalism instead. She takes an anthropological interest in family, friends, and life in her West Sussex village (think The Archers crossed with Twin Peaks), where she lives with her husband, children, and various other pets. “The X-Files” premiered on the Fox network in September 1993. While the sci-fi mystery show was inspired by earlier series like “The Twilight Zone,” “Twin Peaks,” and “Kolchak: The Night Stalker,” creator Chris Carter tapped into a unique moment in the cultural zeitgeist to produce something even more resonant. The adventures of two outcast FBI agents investigating aliens, monsters, and unexplained phenomena clicked with a burgeoning interest in the paranormal and conspiracy theories, and a growing mistrust in government authority. What began as a cult classic quickly became a pop-culture phenomenon that defined the 1990s, and which continues to hold serious cultural cache. The truth is out there, and we intend to find it as the Great Pop Culture Debate attempts to name the best episode of “The X-Files.” Episodes discussed: “Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose,” “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas,” “Small Potatoes,” “Tooms,” “Squeeze,” “Leonard Betts,” “Quagmire,” “Ice,” “Home,” “Beyond the Sea,” “Humbug,” “Die Hand Die Verletz,” “Bad Blood,” “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster,” “Syzygy,” “The Host” Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Bob Erlenback and Kate Racculia, and special guest author Victor Manibo as they discuss 16 of the very best episodes of “The X-Files,” both from the original run and the 2010s reboot. This week, Da7e and Neil are stepping very carefully into the secure lab to feed the specimens as the first season of Alien: Earth continues to escalate. In The Calm [04:58], they consider which human characters they are still rooting for, question whether Wendy can actually communicate with the Xenomorph, and begin to wonder what kinds of safeguards are built into Kirsh's programming. Then in The Storm [01:13:14], your faithful hosts make their predictions for what will be the big showdowns of the final two episodes and check-in with their ongoing theories about where and when a Predator easter egg might appear. This week, Da7e and Neil are in your feeds a day later than usual because there's a saboteur running around setting fire to their space ship! In The Calm [06:16], they dig into Alien: Earth's big flashback episode as director Noah Hawley delivers his own Alien mini-movie about the plight of the USCSS Maginot. They question whether 65 years of one's life is worth a quarter share, worry about the workplace safety practices of Weyland-Yutani scientists, and present several wild theories about Morrow's motivations. Then in The Storm [01:17:50], your faithful hosts break down the trailer for episode 6, "The Wasp," before considering the possible endgame for Wendy's character and the Alien comic that could serve as inspiration for a wild twist.
