There's been a stark warning to MPs about the number of women pensioners living in poverty. The House of Commons Work and Pensions committee has been hearing the pension system is dysfunctional, and contributing to more gender disparity, that's according to the feminist economic think tank the Women's Budget Group, which gave evidence this week. It's Thursday, January 29th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Evangelical college fired teacher for calling homosexual behavior sin A Christian teacher in England went to court last week to defend his religious freedom. Dr. Aaron Edwards worked at Cliff College in Derbyshire. Three years ago, the Evangelical college fired him after he called homosexuality a sin in a social media post. Edwards is now appealing a tribunal decision that upheld his dismissal with the help of the Christian Legal Centre. Andrea Williams, chief executive of the organization, said, "This case raises serious questions about freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and the lawful limits of institutional authority.” Referencing Acts 4:20, Edwards said he does not regret speaking the truth, saying, “As the apostles said before their accusers, ‘We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.'” Euthanasia bill failed in French Senate A bill to legalize euthanasia failed in France's Senate last week. Political deadlock among lawmakers effectively killed the bill. Gregor Puppinck is the Director General of the European Centre for Law and Justice. He said, “This text was terrible. It allowed euthanasia and suicide by decision of a single doctor, at the oral request of a patient, in three days, without the relatives being informed and able to take legal action.” Canada euthanized elderly woman against her will Meanwhile, in Canada, an elderly woman was tragically euthanized against her will through the country's Medical Assistance in Dying program. This according to a report by the Office of the Chief Coroner. The report identified the 80-year-old woman as “Mrs. B.” She initially expressed interest in the program. But later, she wanted to withdraw her request, “citing personal and religious values and beliefs.” However, assessors with the euthanasia program approved the killing after her husband reported experiencing “caregiver burnout.” Proverbs 12:10 says, “The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.” Canada backs off deal with China after Trump tariff threat Canada reached a preliminary agreement with China earlier this month to lower tariffs on certain goods. However, U.S. President Trump criticized the deal. He wrote on Truth Social, “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.” In response, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney backed off the agreement with China. Federal Reserve didn't change interest rate In the United States, the Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged yesterday. The central bank decided to keep its key lending rate between 3.5 percent and 3.75 percent. The Fed noted, “Available indicators suggest that economic activity has been expanding at a solid pace. Job gains have remained low, and the unemployment rate has shown some signs of stabilization. Inflation remains somewhat elevated.” Fewer U.S. pastors leaving ministry A new survey from the Barna Group found fewer pastors are considering walking away from the ministry. Twenty-four percent of U.S. senior Protestant pastors say they have seriously considered leaving full-time ministry within the past year. That's down from 42 percent in 2022. Pastoral burnout heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic but has been stabilizing since then. The report noted, “Fewer pastors appear to be in immediate vocational crisis, even as many continue to carry fatigue, grief, and uncertainty about the future of ministry.” Today is birthday of Martin Luther's wife And finally, today marks the birthday of Katharina Von Bora, the wife of Martin Luther. She was born on January 29, 1499. Her mother died in childhood and she was sent to a Catholic boarding school before becoming a nun. At the convent, Katharina discovered the writings of Martin Luther. Along with other nuns, she learned about salvation by grace through faith in Christ. This led Katharina and the nuns to ask Luther for help to escape the convent. Luther was able to help the nuns find husbands and jobs, except for Katharina. The two were eventually married. Together, they had six children. Author Michelle DeRusha described Katharina as “a woman who risked marrying one of the most controversial men of the time – a man who could have very likely been burned as a heretic at any given moment. She was a woman who raised six children; ran a boardinghouse; oversaw a farm complete with fruit orchards, livestock, and a fishpond; and advised and cared for her husband.” Consider an excellent, full-color, beautifully illustrated children's book about her entitled Katharine von Bora: The Morning Star of Wittenberg. It is co-authored by Shanna and Jenna Strackbein, twin sisters who were homeschooled in Aransas Pass, Texas, by their beloved mother Jenny. Joel Beeke, President of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan said, "Boys and girls (and adults too) will love this beautiful book about a godly woman who helped to change the world." Many religions and cultures have an answer to Who was the first woman? But the records of those answers were all written thousands of years after any such women lived. For historians, the more answerable question is Who was the first woman named in a record written during or close to her own lifetime? Neithhotep was a queen in Egypt's very first dynasty. Not much is known about her for certain, but what we do know is that she kicked off a very long list of women in the historical record. In small villages, bustling cities, and crowded ghettos across early modern Europe, Jewish women were increasingly active participants in the daily life of their communities, managing homes and professions, leading institutions and sororities, and crafting objects and texts of exquisite beauty. In their book, A Woman Is Responsible for Everything: Jewish Women in Early Modern Europe (Princeton UP, 2025), Debra Kaplan and Elisheva Carlebach marshal a dazzling array of previously untapped archival sources to tell the stories of these woman for the first time.Kaplan and Carlebach focus their lens on the kehillah, a lively and thriving form of communal life that sustained European Jews for three centuries. They paint vibrant portraits of Jewish women of all walks of life, from those who wielded their wealth and influence in and out of their communities to the poorest maidservants and vagrants, from single and married women to the widowed and divorced. We follow them into their homes and learn about the possessions they valued and used, the books they read, and the writings they composed. Speaking to us in their own voices, these women reveal tremendous economic initiative in the rural marketplace and the princely court, and they express their profound spirituality in the home as well as the synagogue.Beautifully illustrated, A Woman Is Responsible for Everything lifts the veil of silence that has obscured the lives of these women for too long, contributing a new chapter to the history of Jewish women and a new understanding of the Jewish past. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Leslie R Schover, author of the book Fission. Leslie is a clinical psychologist and brings her knowledge of people and relationships to her fiction writing. She spent most of her career at the Cleveland Clinic and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She published three self-help books and created a digital health company to educate people with cancer about sex and fertility. Will2Love.com won a 2019 Innovation Prize in the Astellas C 3 Changing Cancer Care contest. Her first published novel, Fission: A Novel of Atomic Heartbreak draws on her parents' stories of Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project and on revelations of Soviet spies there. She lives in Houston, Texas with her faithful dog, Luc. In my book review, I stated that Fission is a wonderful historical fiction. Although set during WWII, this book takes place completely within the United States as we follow Doris and her husband Rob to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Doris' husband is tapped to work on the Manhattan Project, a top-secret program to create the first atomic bomb. As a reluctant young mother and bride, Doris first has to decide if she will move to Oak Ridge or continue her education. When she finally moves to Oak Ridge, she has to figure out her place in a world very different from Chicago. Will being Jewish be something to overcome? Will her husband's lack of education stop him from advancing? Will Doris figure out her role as wife and mother? What will she do when romance comes knocking - and not from her husband? I was excited to learn this story is based loosely on Leslie's parents, which gives an emotional edge to the characters - and you know how I love a good character! This is a must-read book that will give you an insider's look at The Manhattan Project and how it affected not just the scientists, but all who lived and worked in Oak Ridge. #396 In this gripping episode, Maayan Sebbag shared her incredible survival story from a deadly earthquake in China in 2008. She recounted how she endured massive injuries, chose to defy medical odds, and experienced profound spiritual moments that brought her back to life. Despite overwhelming odds, she significantly relied on her intuition and divine guidance to navigate a treacherous journey to safety. Maayan also touched on the lessons she's learned about faith, intuition, and resilience. Her story serves as an inspiring testament to the human spirit's strength and the divine power guiding us. About Maayan: Maayan Sebbag is the author of UNBURIED, a powerful true story of surviving one of the most devastating earthquakes the world has known, in China in 2008, against all odds. Today, Maayan shares her unbelievable journey to help people remember that they are never alone, that miracles exist, and that there is a divine plan working through their lives. She guides people to "alchemize" their life story, transforming pain into purpose, by discovering God's perspective and their own inner strength. She helps people heal by reconnecting to the divine light within them and by seeing their soul's journey with new eyes of faith, hope, and meaning. Maayan Sebbag provides online therapeutic guidance, supporting people through consciousness-based healing using spiritual conversation and active meditation to release blockages, clear energies, and reconnect with the soul's root. This process helps with self-realization, understanding one's soul purpose, and more. She also offers nutritional guidance, supporting those dealing with diabetes, thyroid balance, weight management, blood pressure regulation, and additional wellness goals. This is a podcast for tall girlies, right? Well, I mean obviously. It's literally called A Tall Girl's Podcast. And I get quite a few messages, emails, reviews, and comments from tall women of different heights saying how this podcast has helped them love their height. And honestly, I'm super grateful for y'all. Now these heights range from 5'8” all the way to 6'5”, which is a pretty big range. And if you were to line these women up by height and ask everyday people which ones they considered tall, I'm sure we'd get varying responses. Some people will say 5'10”. Some will say 6'1”. Some will apparently say 5'5” lol. I honestly have no idea why, but whatever. Anyways, it's apparent that no one can agree on what's considered tall for a woman. And today, we're gonna dive deeper into this debate and maybe even settle it once and for all. Tune in to the full episode for more! In this episode, I'm sharing why the most overlooked leadership skill for high-level women right now isn't discipline, hustle, or having the perfect plan—it's the ability to pause without spiraling. I talk about why January creates so much nervous system dysregulation, how comparison turns us into “gap thinkers,” and why most women aren't behind at all—they're just measuring their lives with the wrong ruler. This conversation is a reminder that clarity doesn't come from pushing harder, but from creating space to actually hear yourself again. I also open up about how pausing has transformed the way I steward my business, my voice, and my identity—especially after a profound personal experience that reshaped how I understand safety, leadership, and provision. I talk about why learning to hold the process matters more than chasing the outcome, why trying to be everything to everyone creates exhaustion, and how true influence comes from honoring your specific lane and genius. This episode is an invitation to slow down, release control, and trust that what you're preparing for in the pause is what allows the harvest to come. Liked this episode? You do not need to sprint into the new year. You do not need to prove January. You do not need to panic plan. You do not need to aggressively map out your entire year in a week like your life depends on it. You don't have to have the perfect setup or the perfect studio, or the perfect launch or whatever thing that you're making up and telling yourself that you need in order to make something great because most women don't enter the new year with a strategy problem. Most women enter the new year with nervous system dysregulation.” - Julie Solomon “ It's not to say that goals are bad. It's not to say that measuring how far we've come to where we wanna be is bad. It's just that a lot of women are measuring their lives with a ruler that was never meant to measure their actual progress, their actual success. And that's the thing most women are not behind. They're just measuring with the wrong ruler, and you cannot build a powerful year from some distorted measuring stick.” - Julie Solomon RESOURCES:

The protests that began in Iran last month have been suppressed with a level of state violence not seen since the 1980s, when the Islamic Republic executed thousands of leftists and other dissidents. In this episode, Adam Shatz talks to Chowra Makaremi and Amir Ahmadi Arian about the evolution of public dissent in Iran since 1979 and why the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom' movement of 2022 opened the way to more overtly revolutionary protest. They also discuss the economic collapse underpinning the most recent uprising and the ways in which the Iranian regime has refined the use of opacity and rumour to consolidate its power. Chowra Makaremi is an anthropologist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris and Amir Ahmadi Arian is a novelist and assistant professor at Binghamton University, New York.
