Everyone knows that Seattle is Pearl Jam's hometown city, but just like Chicago is a hometown city for Eddie Vedder, so is San Diego. Not just that, but it extends to both Mike McCready and Matt Cameron as well. So any time that the band gets to travel to San Diego, there's no doubt that you're in for a special show. In 2006, that's exactly what happens. The band played with their pants on fire and every song had high octane energy as the hometown crowd was treated to something special. The main story from this show took place at the top of the encore where Ed paid tribute to his former drama teacher, a man named Clayton E. Liggett, who Ed had a theater created in his name. He told the story about finding out the night he passed away during the Mirrorball sessions. After hearing of the news, he went back into the studio and started to strum his guitar with the opening chord of what would become Long Road. We'll talk about how important this moment was when looking back on the history of this band, and we'll also share our own personal stories of how teachers have impacted our lives. There are so many ways we can all connect to Ed, and this story is transcendent due to his vulnerability in sharing that. There are also some big time performances at this show. The first four songs of this show from Oceans to Brain Of J. set the bar incredibly high for the night, and then incredible performances to follow such as Even Flow, You Are, Satan's Bed, Inside Job, Rearviewmirror with a Life Wasted inspired improv, Crown Of Thorns, a big time Alive solo and the debut of Big Wave. We'll spend the episode discussing which 2006 shows best define this era and if this show deserves to be in the conversation. Is this a candidate for the Live On 4 Legs hall of fame? The Vikings are for real . . . and their defense is lights out. They hosted Vikings-South, the Houston Texans—and were anything but hospitable, dominating them to the tune of 34-7. Quarterback Sam Darnold threw four touchdown passes (for the second time in his career, first time without an interception) and the Vikings defense confused Texans QB C.J. Stroud throughout, leading to three sacks and two picks. By the time this one was done, the previously undefeated Texans were handed their first loss of the season in dominating fashion.

Frank Solomon (@franksolomon) is one of the most well-liked people I've ever met. Every country has a couch for him to crash on, random encounters turn into lifelong friendships, and for some reason that science still can't explain, meals are always “compliments of the chef.” He's just one of those guys. Frank is a talented big wave charger, Patagonia Surf Ambassador, and now founder of Sentinel Ocean Alliance, a Cape Town-based non-profit that teaches lifesaving skills and ocean education to underprivileged kids. In this episode, we chatted about early big wave sessions at his home break, Dungeons, traveling to Mavericks and getting stuck in a youth hostel in the Tenderloin, and why growing up in South Africa offers a more honest perspective on life. Send us a Text Message.Whether it's navigating a competitive lineup or dropping into steeper waves, every surfer is bound to face fear in the lineup. But what happens when that fear becomes so debilitating that you can no longer enjoy your sessions?Meet Kim Chareonbood. Hypnotherapist, sports mental trainer, and Surf Guide at The Surf Société Community. Kim specializes in helping surfers overcome fear and trauma holding them back in the water, and in life.In this episode you'll hear about Kim's personal journey of managing fear and self-doubt to push herself to surf bigger waves, we'll share relatable stories of feeling intimidated in the surf but build confidence anyway, and you'll learn the brain science behind fear, as well as, how to utilize fear to your advantage in the lineup. If you've ever struggled with anxiety about bigger waves or crowded lineups, this episode is a must listen.Main Themes:The Impact of Traumatic Experiences: "When you have a traumatic experience, it's in our body, in our system, in our mind, and it kind of has its own life. The information of the experience is so overwhelming it can't be processed by your brain in the normal way, and it leaves kind of an imprint of an unfinished story.'" - Kim ChareonboodEmbracing Incremental Progress: "You can really do mini-step by mini-step. People usually say, 'Now I have to go there and I have to take this wave.' No, the first step is to go closer and then go a little closer. Then maybe the next day you try to take the wave and you pull back, it's fine. It's like the next step, right? So that is one thing you can do. Go really mini-step by mini-step and be fine with it." - Kim ChareonboodRisks in Surfing: "If you're not willing to take risks, you can't go surfing. There's just no point in you going surfing, even not small waves, because in the small waves there's more incidents, I would say, than in the bigger ones." - Kim ChareonboodResources:Try a membership at The Surf Société with 7 days free.Shop Dip and get FREE shipping with the code "confessions" at checkout at Dipalready.comFollow us your host Laura Day: @confessionsofasurfladyFollow The Surf Société: @surfsociete for surf lady tips from #thesurflab inside the membershipFollow Kim Chareonbood on Instagram: @fearless_surferVisit Kim's Website: Surfmentaltraining.comSupport the Show.Confessions of a Surf Lady is supported by The Surf Société, our unique digital women's surfing platform where we come together to Learn More. Waterworld was Kevin Costner's massive swing at post-apocalyptic adventure. As the film's gruff lead, the Mariner, Costner is essentially just a seafaring Mad Max, wandering the oceanic wasteland trying to survive. If that sounds cool, then you'll probably love it. And for the most part, it is pretty damn awesome. What made Waterworld such an easy target for critics and the public was its massive budget and oft rumored issues during production. The budget did balloon and was indeed sizable. The rumors of on-set discord are more than likely true, but they shouldn't detract from the film itself. Waterworld took an impossible premise and somehow made most of its ideas float. Thus, despite earning just $264.2 million worldwide on an all-in budget of $235 million, it was hardly the catastrophe most made it out to be. Plus, you get Dennis Hopper with an eye-patch, mutant sharks, a rad trimaran, jet ski fights, and a fish-man mutant as the hero! What's not to love? Now, sit back, purify your urine with a Big Wave from Kona, and remember: It's never to early to start smoking! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, Capt. Pearl Jam is playing two shows in the City Of Angels this week, so once again we're back to cover another show from their history that they played in The Fabulous Forum. We're going back to 2006, the Avocado tour. A tour that we can kind of connect to what they are doing now with Dark Matter considering the high representation that you'll get each night from the album. This show in LA featured 10 of the 13 tracks while Dark Matter has consistently hovered around 8 of 11. We'll talk a little bit about the impact of the setlists thus far on this tour and where they intersect with Avocado. A great crowd show here (which is disappointing when you look at the ticket sales for both Forum shows for this week) and we'll get into how they made what could be considered a standard setlist to many feel exciting. The crowd came to participate on songs like Release, Corduroy, Even Flow, Small Town, Last Kiss and Alive, but also reacted well to the brand new songs. The highlights of this set that we'll get into come from Rearviewmirror, Crown Of Thorns, Gone, Big Wave and Inside Job, and we'll get to see an appearance from Tim Robbins joining in on a modern take of a song by folk musician Phil Ochs. Javier will join us to talk and teach about the Dumble amps that they've been using all tour, and he'll do a breakdown of Big Wave as well. Stay tuned as he'll join the show next week in preparation for Seattle!
