401 VelociPastor II Interview Jurassic Park Trivia Comic Con CarrieDoom Scrolling IntroThe Foos kick off the 400s with yard-work injuries, mosquito attacks, and the ongoing backyard project that may or may not destroy Joe's arm before it's done. Steph explains her mosquito bite allergy situation, Joe suspects he messed up his elbow trenching in 90-degree weather, and somehow this still counts as progress.Geeking Out starts with San Diego Comic-Con week: Marvel is expected to bring Avengers Doomsday heat to Hall H, Insomniac is showing off Marvel's Wolverine, DC is bringing Batman: Caped Crusader and Lanterns energy, Guillermo del Toro is tied to Pan's Labyrinth programming, and The VelociPastor II is premiering at the con with a double feature of the original movie. Then it's horror TV news: Mike Flanagan is bringing Stephen King's Carrie to Prime Video as a series, which actually makes sense given his track record with Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. The Foos also talk American Horror Story Season 13 bringing back a massive lineup of franchise favorites, including Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, and Billie Lourd. In honor of Sam Neill, Steph runs Joe through Jurassic Park trivia focused on the original movie. There are correct answers, wrong answers, technical difficulties, a timer disaster, and the realization that the first dinosaur they see is not the Triceratops with the giant pile of poop. The main event is an interview with Jesse Gouldsberry, director of The VelociPastor II and producer/director of photography on the original VelociPastor. Jesse talks about how a fake title and college short became a real cult movie, how the first trailer went micro-viral and even landed on G4's Attack of the Show, the jump from the first film's tiny budget to the sequel, and why having more money doesn't mean losing the handmade chaos. They dig into the fake Australian trailer narration, the legendary “VFX: Car on fire” placeholder gag, balancing intentionally ridiculous filmmaking with actual story structure, the pressure of making a sequel to a cult favorite, and the DIY production choices that keep the movie feeling like community-theater grindhouse insanity in the best way possible.Jesse also talks about premiering The VelociPastor II in a 14th-century church in Prague, bringing it to San Diego Comic-Con, planning a roadshow, getting rights back to the first film, possible future streaming/distribution plans, and why fans should ask their local theaters to bring the movie to town.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroIntroMosquito bites skeeter syndrome and yard work injuriesBackyard project trenching granite sod and chaosGeeking Out San Diego Comic-Con previewMarvel Avengers Doomsday Hall H expectationsMarvel's Wolverine deep dive at Comic-ConDC Batman Caped Crusader Lanterns and Pan's Labyrinth programmingThe VelociPastor II Comic-Con double feature previewMike Flanagan Carrie series for Prime VideoAmerican Horror Story Season 13 franchise reunionJurassic Park trivia in honor of Sam NeillInterview Jesse Gouldsberry joins the showThe VelociPastor origin fake title college short and G4VelociPastor II budget sequel pressure and DIY chaosFake Australian trailer voice and VFX car on firePrague church premiere and San Diego Comic-Con screeningRoadshow plans streaming rights and future VelociPastor ideasOutro + Doom Scrolling OutroThe Foobar Show, VelociPastor II, Jesse Gouldsberry, VelociPastor interview, San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Avengers Doomsday, Marvel's Wolverine, Batman Caped Crusader, Lanterns DC, Mike Flanagan Carrie, Stephen King, American Horror Story Season 13, Jurassic Park trivia, Sam Neill, grindhouse comedy, cult movie sequel

Land of the Lost is a disaster on almost every level… but is still one of Kade's favorite movies. We break down how Universal bought the rights to this movie with the sole purpose of putting Will Ferrell in it at the peak of his career, and how it still managed to flop harder than almost any movie in Hollywood history. We talk about why this is the only movie Will Ferrell and Danny McBride ever made together and why that alone makes it worth watching. We get into how the original creators of the TV show publicly apologized at Comic-Con and called it one of the worst films ever made. And we discuss why despite all of that, this movie gets exponentially funnier every single time you rewatch it.Chapters:00:00 Announcements & Intro0:52 Why are we watching this movie?9:03 Horrible plot16:08 Massive flop24:57 Jorma Taccone out of nowhere32:16 A universally hated movie42:02 The lines that made it's way into Kade's vocabulary54:22 Adam McKay almost graced us with directing59:26 Has Will Ferrell lost his touch?1:05:29 Final thoughts

Really?? Also, we're really hoping Juno gets a happily ever after, but man alive it doesn't look good), and we do, but first we had to talk about the passing of Sam Neill. He was one of our favorite actors in some of our favorite films, but he was also by all accounts a genuinely nice guy. Thank you for all the amazing characters, Sam, you were the best, and we'll really miss the posts from your farm. And of course, we've got the usual random tangents, like stupidly long seasons of TV, Netflix Bloat, Florida Supercon, and how you really should be nice to the Comic-Con volunteers. This episode's outro is a clip from Juno by Chronox.Sam Neill was a favorite in our Watch Party conversations, here's a few:Hunt for the WilderpeopleThe Hunt for Red OctoberIn the Mouth of MadnessJurassic ParkIt can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. Send us Fan MailSomething felt off at Florida SuperCon 2026 and I wanted to say it out loud, carefully and honestly. I'm Anthony, flying solo for this mini episode while Dakota and Jenn take time to welcome their new son, and I'm using this buffer week to catch you up and then dig into my press-pass weekend at the biggest comic convention in South Florida.SuperCon still has a place in my heart. I've gone for years, and that's exactly why the small changes hit so hard. Even with a big guest list on paper, including names like Hayden Christensen, Rosario Dawson, and Charlie Cox, the experience didn't always translate on the show floor. I talk about what it's like when headliners feel hidden, when the panel schedule feels lighter than expected, and when the convention energy doesn't match what you'd expect from a ReedPop event. If you care about fan conventions, Comic Con culture, and what makes an event feel alive, this is a real-world case study. We also get into the practical stuff that determines whether a weekend feels worth it: vendor variety, Artist Alley growth, booth costs that may be pricing creators out, and why the gaming area and space layout choices matter more than people think. I share what worked, what didn't, and what I hope changes before Florida SuperCon 2027, especially for a region that doesn't have many major convention options. If you've ever left a convention feeling both grateful and frustrated, you'll relate. 400 Moo Deng Neil the Seal Comic Con Doug Brode Shelli InterviewDoom Scrolling IntroThe Foos made it to 400 episodes. Joe and Steph celebrate with VMC cocktails, reflect on 8 years of The Foobar Show, and explain why some older episodes have disappeared from platforms over time. No huge blowout, no fake promises — just 400 episodes, a toast, and the usual chaos. The animal kingdom takes over the top of the show: Moo Deng officially turns 2, proving that the internet's favorite pygmy hippo is still the queen of slippery rage, bouncy pork energy, and conservation awareness. Then Neil the Seal finally takes his 2,200-pound chaotic ass back into the ocean after weeks of lounging around Tasmania, blocking roads, flattening signs, and refusing to respect anything vertical.Joe and Steph also explain why the podcast has been spotty lately: life, work, band stuff, Steph's Sunday schedule, and the massive backyard facelift happening because Steph volunteered the house for her brother's baby shower. There's also some Medieval Times talk because sometimes you just need dinner, jousting, horses, and giant beer steins.Geeking Out starts with San Diego Comic-Con: they didn't get badges, of course, but there's still plenty happening outside the convention — themed cafes, Paramount at the Lodge, Hello Kitty, Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes, Star Trek experiences, and all the badge-free chaos that makes downtown San Diego worth visiting during Comic-Con week. They also hit LA Comic Con tickets going on sale, with the convention returning October 30 through November 1 and guests already including Aaron Paul, Dean Norris, and performers from K-Pop Demon Hunters. Then it's long-awaited movie news: Legend of the White Dragon finally has a release date. The Jason David Frank-led, Power Rangers-adjacent action movie arrives August 28, and the Foos have been waiting years for this one.Avatar fans get love too: Aang: The Last Airbender is coming to Paramount+ on July 25 as a movie featuring an older Aang and the gang trying to save the world again. Joe and Steph revisit why the original Avatar series still holds up as one of the best animated shows ever made — adult themes, perfect pacing, emotional stakes, and Appa trauma included.Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey also enters the chat, with Matt Damon as Odysseus and a massive cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. Practical ships, real locations, giant crowds, IMAX cameras, Greek mythology, and enough complicated storytelling to make Nolan feel right at home. The big feature this week is an interview with returning guest Doug Brode, storyboard/concept artist and author of the Ship saga and the Shelli synthetic crime series. Doug talks about Shelli: R-Evolution, why it is not actually the final Shelli book, how the series has grown, the challenge of writing sequels that stand alone, AI and synthetics, keeping villains understandable, writing in silence, short chapters, and why Shelli's world keeps expanding. He also shares that the first Shelli book is getting a 99-cent Kindle BookBub deal starting July 15.

Dave Kellett returns from his first-ever college reunion with a full heart — and a renewed appreciation for old friends, running jokes, and the occasional listener washing dishes through the cold open. From there, Brad and Dave dig into one of the trickiest parts of writing comics: how much work should the reader have to do to “get” the punchline? Using Brad's motorcycle-jump-over-a-ravine metaphor, they discuss why wider joke “canyons” can create bigger laughs, why shorter jumps can feel merely “technically funny,” and why the best cartoonists learn how to build strong launching ramps while understanding that every reader brings a different landing ramp. Also in this episode: How to show music in a silent medium, why semi-realistic comics should still embrace comics iconography, a quick San Diego Comic-Con update, Bluesky's expanded image carousel, and why obsessing over analytics can become a form of creative procrastination. Topics covered in this episode include: Writing punchlines that require inference from the reader Brad's “motorcycle jumping a ravine” metaphor for humor Why wider joke gaps can produce bigger laughs The difference between “funny” and “technically funny” Why some jokes land for one reader and miss for another How audience literacy, life experience, and context affect comedy Why “it took me a second” can be a feature, not a bug The danger of making every joke too obvious Why memorable comics often take bigger comedic swings Why being someone's “top three cartoonist” matters more than broad mild approval The difference between newspaper-era comics and webcomics-era audience building Dave's San Diego Comic-Con booth update The free ComicLab pin for listeners at Booth 1228 Bluesky expanding post image limits from 4 images to 10 How the new Bluesky carousel can help sequential artists How to communicate piano music in comics Why floating music notes are not “too cartoony” for semi-realistic comics Using established comics iconography instead of reinventing the wheel Why comics can suggest music but rarely reproduce the experience of music How manga and anime use visual language more freely Using musical notation as a visual “spice,” not the whole dish Why analytics can become creative avoidance Whether it matters how quickly a comic reaches its maximum views Why “magic number” thinking can distract from improving the next comic Why creators should spend less time dusting bookcases and more time making better comics What's better? A simple gag or one that requires the audience to think? UPDATE: Comic-Con International booth 1228 Update: Bluesky update... 10 images per post! Barrett Gruber is joined by Donald Brock for a lively, wide-ranging conversation that bounces between Capitol Hill and the Comic Con floor without missing a beat. If you like your politics mixed with pop culture and a healthy dose of humor, this one's for you.The episode opens with technical glitches, Fourth of July celebrations, and the kind of easy banter that makes this show feel like a conversation you actually want to be part of. From there, the pair dive into Mitch McConnell's health and hospitalization, exploring what it means for Senate dynamics and the complicated process of replacing a sitting senator. It's a political reality check wrapped in candid commentary. Then the mood lifts considerably as Barrett and Donald shift to the upcoming Soda City Comic Con — covering the guest lineup, the nostalgia factor, and why community events like this matter for local culture and the Columbia, SC economy. If you're a fan of Robocop, Revenge of the Nerds, or just the energy of a great convention floor, this segment delivers. The World Cup discussion is a highlight — the pair break down host country performances, surprising results, and what a global sports event reveals about American culture and international perspective. The conversation naturally expands into diversity, cultural identity, and the ways social media amplifies both the best and most chaotic moments of events like the World Cup.The back half gets more pointed, with Barrett and Donald examining the duality of Donald Trump — the on-camera performer versus the off-camera operator — and what it means that he speaks almost exclusively to his base rather than the broader electorate. The political hypocrisy thread is sharp, funny, and honest in equal measure.Topics Covered:Mitch McConnell's health and Senate seat replacement dynamicsSoda City Comic Con guest lineup and community impactWorld Cup 2026 host country performance and surprisesAmerican cultural identity and global perspectivesDiversity in the United States as a cultural mosaicThe duality of Trump: public performance vs. private personaPolitical hypocrisy and humor in political discourseSocial media's role in amplifying global eventsSoda City Comic Con in Columbia, SCBarrett Gruber | LinktreeThe All About Nothing: Podcast | LinktreeSoda City Comic Con | InstagramSoda City Comic Con | TwitterSoda City Comic Con | FacebookClick here for Episode Show Notes! As always, "The All About Nothing: Podcast" is owned and distributed by BIG Media LLC!Check out our network of fantastic podcasts!Click Here to see available advertising packages!Click Here for information on the "Fair Use Copyright Notice" for this podcast.Mentioned in this episode:Check Your Voter RegistrationVisit https://theallaboutnothing.com/voter to check your registration! This week, Brad and Dave discuss one of the easiest traps for independent creators to fall into: Outsourcing important business or creative decisions to reader polls. Audience feedback can be useful, but when creators ask readers to steer decisions about Patreon tiers, Kickstarter rewards, publishing strategy, or creative direction, they often get noisy, contradictory advice that can lead them away from their own best judgment. Topics covered in this episode include: Why readers are experts in consumption, not creation The danger of asking your audience to make business decisions for you Brad's cautionary tale from his early days as a newspaper designer Why negative comments carry more psychological weight than positive ones The difference between listening to readers and asking readers to decide Why feedback should be treated as a compass, not a steering wheel How polling readers can create factions and resentment among backers Why creators should rely first on their own instincts, goals, and judgment The value of seeking advice from trusted peers and experienced professionals Why no single expert — including ComicLab — should be treated as the only authority Dave's hierarchy of advice: Heart and mind first, peers and pros second, passive reader feedback third Erika Moen's thoughtful counterpoint about social-media assistants How a social-media assistant can protect creators from harassment, criticism, and burnout The difference between a social-media assistant as a partner versus a replacement Plans and possibilities for future live ComicLab events Dave's San Diego Comic-Con appearance at Booth 1228, including free ComicLab pins for listeners A listener question about “boomer humor” and whether it should be taken as an insult The difference between old-fashioned joke structure and out-of-touch subject matter Why traditional setup-and-punchline comedy still works How Reddit comments often reflect meme culture more than thoughtful criticism When repeated criticism might be worth filtering for a useful grain of truth Why creators should protect their confidence while staying open to thoughtful feedback You get great rewards when you join the ComicLab Community on Patreon$2 — Early access to episodes$5 — Submit a question for possible use on the show AND get the exclusive ProTips podcast. This week, Brad and Dave discuss what happens after a cartoonist achieves the dream: making a living from comics. They explain why success can create its own time-management problems, how to protect the thing that's already working, and why adding books, Kickstarter campaigns, merch, newsletters, or conventions should happen gradually. They also talk about practical systems for numbering webcomic pages, naming files, and keeping longform comics organized over time. Main topics covered Weird convention-reader encounters, including disputed signatures and free-sketch requests What to do when your comic and Patreon are working, but there's no time for anything else Protecting the “engine” of your business before adding new projects Avoiding concentration risk when most income comes from one platform Adding new business layers slowly instead of trying to do everything at once Using small projects, like enamel pins, as manageable learning experiences Why side projects can derail your main comic if you're not careful Finding extra time without wrecking your life or mental health Dave's San Diego Comic-Con booth and the free ComicLab enamel pin How to number pages for longform webcomics The difference between website numbering and book-page numbering Using SEO-friendly titles, focus keyphrases, transcripts, and alt text File-naming conventions for comics, including dates, chapters, pages, and vertical-scroll segments Planning ahead for long-running comics so your numbering system doesn't break later You get great rewards when you join the ComicLab Community on Patreon$2 — Early access to episodes$5 — Submit a question for possible use on the show AND get the exclusive ProTips podcast.
