Have you ever wondered what actually goes on behind the velvet ropes of Hollywood and the massive arenas of the sports world? In this episode, Frank sits down with Maddy Myer, a seasoned publicist and the host of the brand new podcast, Maddy Mania. Maddy pulls back the curtain on the high-stakes world of public relations, revealing that it takes far more than just walking red carpets to manage a celebrity's image. From navigating sudden PR crises to adapting to the influencer era, Maddy shares her insider knowledge and career journey. Plus, we dive into her new podcasting venture, which perfectly blends deep fan "spirals" with expert industry analysis, covering everything from K-Pop and wrestling to classic TV shows. Timestamps & Topics 00:00:00 – Introduction: Welcoming Maddy Myer and the launch of Maddy Mania. 00:00:28 – What does a Hollywood publicist actually do? (Hint: It's not just red carpets). 00:01:35 – Career Pivot: How Maddy transitioned from nursing to Public Relations. 00:02:57 – Behind the Scenes: Handling crises, time management, and staying adaptable. 00:03:50 – The PR Shift: How social media and influencer collabs are taking over traditional press. 00:04:55 – Sports vs. Entertainment: Exploring the massive overlap in fandom culture. 00:07:18 – Industry Advice: How to land a job in PR (internships and writing are key!). 00:08:40 – Hollywood's take on PR: Why Maddy loves Apple TV's The Studio. 00:10:41 – The birth of Maddy Mania: Balancing professional goals with pure fan obsession. 00:14:52 – The power of Comic-Con and the importance of exclusivity in modern press runs. 00:20:47 – Dream Guests: Why Ariana Grande and CM Punk are at the top of Maddy's list. 00:21:54 – Rapid Fire Questions: Blackpink dominance, Gossip Girl comfort watches, and viral wrestling theme songs. Key Takeaways PR is Crisis Management: A publicist's true value lies in their adaptability. What seems like a minor hiccup can easily turn into a major crisis, requiring constant schedule juggling and rapid problem-solving. Social Media is the New Press: Traditional media (like radio and print) is taking a backseat to content creation, influencer collaborations, and digital brand building. Fandoms are Universal: Whether you are pitching a sports client or an entertainment star, the passion of the fanbase is the driving force behind a successful campaign. Start Early and Write Often: For those aspiring to enter the PR field, getting diverse internship experience and heavily refining your writing skills are the most critical steps to success. Embrace Your Inner Fan: Maddy Mania proves that you can be a respected industry professional while still unabashedly "spiraling" over your favorite childhood shows, K-pop groups, or wrestlers. Memorable Quotes "You are basically their image makers. You are who's in charge of making sure they look good on camera and off camera... and making sure that their brand and their image stays in a positive light." > "I feel like something that you think could be small could become like a major crisis... being a publicist, you have to be adaptable and flexible, for sure." "Exclusivity is everything in the modern publicist realm. And so Comic-Con is a really good, high-profile event to kind of announce those kinds of things." Concept vs. Conceit — Why Some Comic Ideas Take Off (and Others Stall)

    Comic Lab

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2026 70:29

What's the difference between a concept and a conceit — and why does confusing the two quietly sabotage so many comics? In this episode, Brad and Dave break down one of the most important (and misunderstood) distinctions in storytelling. A concept is the engine that drives your story forward. A conceit is a clever wrapper that might look great… but doesn't go anywhere. If you've ever launched a comic that felt strong at first but ran out of momentum, this conversation will hit home. We talk about: Why constraints actually fuel creativity How to test whether your idea has real staying power The danger of building a comic around a gimmick And how to strengthen your story before you spend months drawing it Today's show: A comic without recurring characters UPDATE: ComicLab accent challenge UPDATE: Amazon Advantage UPDATE: DoubleDogBook.com How to do a sarcastic word balloon Takeaways Character design plays a crucial role in storytelling. Comics can thrive without a central protagonist. Idea-driven comics have historical precedence. Naming a comic can be a challenging but essential task. Feedback is vital in the creative process. Constraints can enhance creativity and focus. Monosyllabic titles are often more memorable. A good title can significantly impact a comic's success. The creative journey involves trial and error. Sharing ideas at smaller levels can reveal what resonates. Avoiding sunk cost fallacy is crucial in decision-making. Amazon Advantage can lead to unexpected losses. Understanding the costs of shipping is essential for profitability. Sarcasm in comics requires careful visual and textual cues. Bold lettering can enhance the impact of sarcasm. Walt Kelly's techniques in lettering were innovative but sometimes excessive. Comic creators should consider the visual presentation of dialogue. A well-crafted word balloon can convey emotion effectively. The legacy of past cartoonists informs current practices. Survivor 50 is leaning hard into “old meets new,” from buffs being drawn to classic improvisation like the glasses-fire trick. Off-island relationships are already shaping trust in a way most seasons never get to this early. Ozzy's early willingness to take an advantage signals a different version of his game this time. The “story” mindset is a real theme for how some players are processing setbacks and trying to control their narrative. Kyle's situation is a reminder that the physical toll is still brutal, even in a celebratory milestone season. “He's at a Comic-Con and everybody else is on Survivor.” “It's all about vibes in the first episode.” “They got beef. Why Bringing Value is the Fastest Way to Build Relationships with Aaron Coney

In this episode, I sit down with Aaron Coney, a creative director, talent manager, and comic book creator who is living proof that opportunities don't just happen, they're created. Aaron's story is one of intentionality, faith, discipline, and a relentless commitment to always bringing value into every room he walks into. Aaron takes us back to his early days in Detroit, where he was surrounded by people chasing big dreams, including his friends Mike Posner and Big Sean. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, Aaron immersed himself in the entertainment industry, learning everything he could and positioning himself to serve. That mindset led to his first major opportunity when he designed and sold Comic Con art prints for the original Blue Power Ranger, turning creativity and initiative into a real business and opening doors into talent management and appearance booking. What makes Aaron different is the philosophy he lives by, something he calls ABV, which stands for Always Bring Value. Whether he's connecting people, solving problems behind the scenes, or helping talent show up at their highest level, Aaron focuses on contribution first. That approach has allowed him to work alongside major names, build authentic relationships, and establish himself as someone people trust. We also talk about the realities of moving to Los Angeles and embracing what Aaron calls the worst car in the lot mindset. Instead of being discouraged by not having the most money, status, or success in the room, he saw it as confirmation that he was exactly where he needed to be to grow. Aaron shares powerful insights into the importance of mentorship, community, and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you to become better. He talks openly about faith, personal growth, and the moment around turning 30 when he realized he needed to elevate his thinking, his habits, and his life. One of the most exciting parts of Aaron's journey is the creation of Phantom Force, his original comic book universe. Inspired initially by Power Rangers, Aaron received advice from the late Jason David Frank to create something original. That advice led him to develop a completely new world with deeper, more mature storytelling and diverse characters that reflect real life. Phantom Force represents not just a creative project, but a lifelong dream coming to life. This conversation is about more than entertainment, comics, or talent management. It is about becoming the kind of person opportunities are attracted to. It is about bringing value, building relationships, trusting your faith, and having the courage to create something that outlives you. Aaron's story will challenge you to stop waiting and start building. In This Episode, You Will Learn: • Why bringing value is the fastest way to build powerful relationships and opportunities • How Aaron turned his love for comics and fandom into a real career • The mindset shift that helped him succeed after moving to Los Angeles • Why your environment plays a critical role in your personal growth • How mentorship and community can completely change your life trajectory • The importance of authenticity and surrounding yourself with the right people • How Phantom Force was created and the lessons Aaron learned from Jason David Frank • Why success is less about money and more about peace, alignment, and purpose • The defining moment that forced Aaron to grow up and level up his life • How faith and discipline have shaped his decisions and vision Who Is Aaron Coney? Aaron Coney is a creative director, talent manager, and comic book creator. He has worked in talent appearances, entertainment branding, and creative development while building his original comic series Phantom Force. His work focuses on storytelling, creating opportunities, and helping others step into their full potential.

Brad and Dave explore the subjective nature of humor, sharing their own experiences with laughter and recognition of craft in comedy. Next, they delve into the ongoing journey of building and maintaining an audience in the ever-evolving landscape of comics. They emphasize that there is no such thing as a 'built audience.' Audience engagement is a continuous process that requires constant effort and adaptation. Drawing on the metaphor of the Ship of Theseus, they discuss how creators must regularly replace and update their strategies to keep their audience engaged, acknowledging that audience members may leave for various reasons, including life changes or simply forgetting about the content. The conversation also touches on the emotional toll of negative feedback, particularly on platforms like Reddit, where creators often face harsh criticism. Brad and Dave share personal anecdotes about dealing with trolls and the importance of focusing on the positive aspects of audience engagement. They conclude by reinforcing the idea that the creative journey is ongoing, and that every creator must continually learn and adapt to thrive in the industry.Takeaways"Not every year is going to be gangbusters."There's no such thing as a built audience; you're always in building mode.Audience engagement is like the Ship of Theseus; it's constantly changing. You should aim to gain 2-6% new audience every month to replace those who leave.Negative comments often come from unhappy individuals; don't take them personally.Every creator must continually learn and adapt to thrive in the industry.
