We kick off by breaking down the viral internet show Subway Takes, pulling back the curtain on host Kareem Rahma, and explaining how the entire production routine actually operates behind the scenes. The guys also dive into some vaulted media history, discussing a legendary, unreleased Kamala Harris episode, before turning their attention to the upcoming Democratic primaries, the absolute absurdity of a potential Stephen A. Smith presidential run, and the covert underground transit systems built exclusively for heads of state. In tech and finance news, we break down Minnesota officially banning prediction markets, the hidden mechanics of modern insider trading, and how the online sports betting boom completely ruined old-school gambling. Plus: A history of the early Comic-Con cosplay days, why Disney is completely cooked, and Stanley's ultimate rock-bottom popcorn trauma.Rise up in the comments: Would you vote for Stephen A. Smith? With both Brad and Dave nominated for awards this year, the guys spiral into a surprisingly deep conversation about awards, marketing, ego, and whether creators should plaster “award nominee” stickers all over their books. Later, they tackle a listener question about using 3D models, digital sets, and reference material in comics production — leading to a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how both creators actually build comics pages in tools like Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop. Along the way, they discuss why imperfections matter in cartooning, how typography affects visual storytelling, and why “cheating” is often just another word for “working smarter.” Today's Show Should you put an award nomination on a book cover? Somehow this episode starts with Point Fest excitement and ends with Edward Furlong becoming a Japanese pop star… and honestly? That tracks for this show. The gang gears up for Point Fest with ticket giveaways, meet-and-greet plans, and what may become the worst idea in festival history: Rafe conducting porta potty interviews by sliding microphones under stall doors like a sewer goblin with broadcasting credentials. If you're attending Point Fest, congratulations — your bathroom anxiety just became part of the entertainment package. Then the crew dives headfirst into A&E's newest chaotic masterpiece: Squatters. Meet Flash Shelton — a real-life “professional squatter remover” who reclaims homes by becoming even more annoying than the people illegally living there. We're talking pet snakes, buckets of crickets, couch invasions, and psychological warfare that somehow got turned into prestige television. Honestly, this funny podcast may have found its spiritual successor. The show also breaks down St. Louis' giant July 4th celebration featuring Ludacris, Miranda Lambert, Zedd, Stephen Marley, and the one true king of soundtrack glory: Kenny freakin' Loggins. The crew debates whether Ludacris should censor his songs for families, whether America deserves a four-day weekend for turning 250, and why Moon is probably already camping out for Loggins. In music news, Lern unleashes opinions on the new Foo Fighters Tiny Desk performance, MGK's latest attempt at musical identity discovery, and Gene Simmons' massive Las Vegas rock expo that sounds like Comic-Con for dads with leather vests and tinnitus. And then… things get weird.Rafe introduces the room to a long-lost relic from the early '90s: Edward Furlong's Japanese pop music career. Yes, John Connor from Terminator 2 recorded an actual album. Yes, there's a music video. Yes, it's horrifying. Welcome back to another wild episode of Locked & Probably Loaded with your hosts DJ Qualls and Kelly Blackheart, joined by producer Isaac Abrams! In this episode, DJ returns from an emotional weekend at Yellow City Comic-Con in Amarillo, Texas, and opens up about his upcoming parade appearance in Calgary where he's getting the keys to the city. He shares his anxiety about JFK comparisons and his deep love for the convention circuit. Kelly and DJ dive into their Puerto Vallarta obsession — recounting hilarious stories about terrible resort food (feta in a quesadilla?!), persistent geckos, and why they keep going back despite culinary disasters. They rant about AI-generated Google misinformation and the realities of "all-inclusive" pricing that still cost $120 at happy hour. The conversation shifts to fashion as DJ proposes "The Uniform Store" — a clothing line for adults who want reliable, non-cropped hoodies and affordable jeans. They discuss the wastefulness of celebrity fashion culture and LA's impossible trends. Things get real discussing family dynamics, aging parents, and DJ's revelation that he's "no longer afraid of dying." They reflect on unexpected podcast growth including listeners in Mexico and urge everyone to engage on social media. Packed with passionate commentary on Hollywood Boulevard's decline, corporate takeover of LA, vacant storefronts, and why LA needs NYC-style rent control. A listener asks whether some words are inherently funnier than others—and it opens the door to a deep dive on word choice, dialogue, and how to make jokes land harder. Brad and Dave break down why shorter, punchier words tend to win, how sound and rhythm affect comedy, and why you should always end on the funniest word. They also walk through their real-world writing process—cutting aggressively, reading dialogue out loud, and constantly swapping in better word choices. From there, the conversation expands into how to write strong dialogue (hint: it's not about realism—it's about impact), plus a list of pitfalls to avoid, including gimmicky accents, overstuffed word balloons, and writing that slows the reader down. They also revisit a past take on political cartoons (turns out, they're thriving on Reddit), talk about the return of Web 1.0 strategies like guest comics, and reinforce a core principle: own your platform and your audience. This week on The FratChat Podcast, we're drafting the ultimate Mount Rushmore of TV nerds. From socially awkward geniuses and sci-fi obsessives to lovable weirdos who made being uncool iconic, we're debating who truly deserves the crown as the Greatest TV Nerd of All Time. Is it the hyper-intelligent know-it-all? The fantasy-world escape artist? The pop-culture encyclopedia with zero social awareness? We break down what actually qualifies someone as a “nerd,” who changed the culture, who made it mainstream, and who was just… aggressively annoying. Expect passionate arguments, controversial rankings, and at least one pick that will absolutely divide the group chat. Plus, we hit our usual chaos: listener emails, reality TV updates, and a few side debates that spiral way off topic (as always). There's nostalgia, hot takes, and a little bit of “were we the nerds all along?” energy. Whether you grew up quoting sitcoms, living at Comic-Con, or pretending you understood advanced physics jokes, this episode is for you. Got a question, comment or topic for us to cover? Let us know! He also co-wrote the films Robot Overlords and Unwelcome, and was co-presenter of the award-winning Bestseller Experiment podcast, which has helped inspire writers around the world to finish and publish their books. We talk about his latest release, The End of Gods, the final book in the End of Magic trilogy, and how Mark returned to the world of the first book years later after getting the rights back. We also get into his experience of crowdfunding, the changing realities of traditional publishing, and why more writers are having to think seriously about direct sales, newsletters and owning their own little corner of the internet.Mark also shares some sharp, practical thoughts on AI and creativity. His view is refreshingly clear: readers want a human connection. They want voice, weirdness, personality and something only that writer could have made.Along the way, we discuss screenwriting, theme, Comic Cons, author branding, what happens when a film doesn't get the push it deserves, and why learning to enjoy the process might be the only sane way to build a long-term writing life.In this episode, you'll hear: Why The End of Gods became the final part of a fantasy trilogy Mark never originally planned  How Mark approaches fantasy by focusing on character over magic systems  Why he thinks writers should “lean into the weird”  The importance of developing a distinctive author voice in the age of AI  Why writers need websites, newsletters and direct connections with readers  What Comic Cons have taught him about selling books face to face  How his screenwriting background shapes his novels  Why the “central dramatic argument” changed the way he thinks about story  The painful release experience behind the film Unwelcome Why enjoying the process matters more than chasing overnight success About Mark StayMark Stay is a novelist, screenwriter, teacher and podcaster. This episode examines a Bluesky thread where cartoonists self-reported their financial realities. While the original question was thoughtful — seeking insight into full-time and part-time comic careers — the resulting discussion revealed a common problem: an echo chamber of discouragement. Brad and Dave emphasize that these threads often skew negative due to self-selection bias. Many successful creators don't participate—either because they're busy, uncomfortable sharing income, or wary of backlash. The result? A distorted picture where it appears that no one is succeeding, even though many are. One doesn't immediately connect The Beatles with the world of comic books but there's plenty there. Besides musical references to Captain Marvel and “Magneto and Titanium Man,” the group themselves have been regularly represented in the pages of comic books, beginning in 1964; sometimes as plot figures. Then we also have graphic novels and latter-day accounts of their history. To lead *me* in a discussion, SATB welcomes two award-winners from the world of comics, both of whom once worked for Marvel. Emmy-winning cartoonist Stephen DeStefano has been connected with works ranging from Popeye to Cuphead as well as his own ‘Mazing Man and Hero Hotline. He also hosts a conversation show on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@S.DeStefano  Glenn Greenberg (a previous guest) is a writer associated with Spider Man, Silver Surfer and Hulk, among others. He has also penned works for the Star Trek book series. He also has written several Beatles-related bookazines, with a new one about to be published. Together, they make the case for the affinity for this art form the Beatles demonstrably had, as well as how well (or not) they have been represented in works ranging from Marvel's 1978 The Beatles' Story to the more recent Fifth Beatle and Fab4Mania.   This episode is brought to you by DistroKid and Magical Mystery Camp.

From an unexpected deep dive into Comic Con culture to a serious discussion about eye appeal, grading, and the growing influence of third-party stickers, this one covers a lot of ground. We get into the real question behind the sticker debate: are collectors paying for the label, or for what the label represents? The conversation moves beyond surface-level takes and into how eye appeal is being recognized, priced, and understood across the hobby right now. Then the focus shifts to the upcoming Sport Card Expo in Toronto, as Leighton Sheldon joins to talk vintage, market behavior, and how dealers think about premium cards in today's environment. Later, Mikey Singer and Johnny Amendola jump in to preview what's shaping up to be the biggest Expo yet, including the evolution of trade nights, community building, and the growing scale of the hobby in Canada. There's also discussion around: The difference between technical grade and eye appeal Why premium examples within the same grade are pulling away in value How new and experienced collectors approach buying decisions differently The role of community, events, and content creators in hobby growth This is Part 1 of a marathon live stream that's been split into multiple podcast episodes. Brad and Dave frame this as the best possible problem for a storyteller to have — not a crisis, but proof that the story is working. Their advice is to resist the urge to dump exposition too early, and instead use reader curiosity as fuel to keep them engaged and coming back for more. Another listener question asks how to make necessary exposition more entertaining in a history comic, and the hosts widen that into a general storytelling discussion. They explore how to handle “problem panels” — moments where important information must be conveyed, but the raw facts feel static or dull. Their answer is that exposition does not need to be delivered plainly: creators can change the point of view, alter the tone, insert found documents, frame facts through action, or even break into totally different storytelling modes if it makes the comic more engaging. The episode also includes a couple of business updates for cartoonists. Brad shares good news about USPS fuel surcharges not applying to Media Mail, which matters for creators shipping books, while Dave warns that new tariffs may affect imported book shipments and advises cartoonists to build more buffer into Kickstarter budgets for 2026. It's a practical reminder that making comics also means staying alert to the changing realities of fulfillment and production costs. Jan. 17, 2027 (NOTE: This will not affect Media Mail pricing) Editorial cartoonists on social media What's the deal with Susan MacTaggart? Introducing Dr. Reginald Wigglesby Splash Pages Brad and Dave take a deep dive into splash pages — what they are, how they've traditionally been used, and how they function differently in print versus webcomics. They discuss classic first-page splash images as attention-grabbing devices, as well as the practical reality that they can help creators hit deadlines. Dave shares how he uses splash pages sparingly in Drive to give big moments room to breathe, while Brad explains how he uses them consistently at the start of chapters in Evil Inc, both as storytelling tools and promotional assets. The conversation also explores why two-page splash spreads can struggle online — especially on mobile — and reinforces a key principle: a graphic novel page is not the same as a webcomic update, and each must be designed with its medium in mind. ComicLab Confab (Listener Calls) The guys remind listeners about the ComicLab Confab — their voicemail line where creators can call in with questions, comments, or hot takes. It's an easy, low-pressure way for the community to participate in the show and potentially have their thoughts featured on-air. If you've got something to say about comics, business, or creative life, you can dial ‪(609) 379-3520 — that's (609) DRY-ELB-0. National Cartoonists Society — Columbus, Ohio Brad and Dave highlight the upcoming National Cartoonists Society event in Columbus, Ohio (Aug. 6–8), encouraging cartoonists to attend. They emphasize the value of in-person networking, camaraderie, and professional development that comes from gathering with other working cartoonists — something that can be hard to replicate online. https://nationalcartoonists.com/registration-now-open-80th-reuben-awards-ncs-conference/ USPS Fuel Surcharge Update A practical business note: the USPS fuel surcharge goes into effect April 26 and is expected to run (possibly) through January 17, 2027. This will impact many shipping rates for creators who sell physical goods, though Media Mail remains unaffected. For cartoonists running Kickstarters, online stores, or Patreon rewards, this is a reminder to factor rising shipping costs into pricing and planning. https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0325-usps-announces-transportation-related-time-limited-price-change.htm Editorial Cartoonists on Social Media The conversation touches on how editorial cartoonists are navigating social media — including the challenges of visibility, audience building, and platform changes. Brad and Dave reflect on how shifting algorithms and audience behavior can affect political and commentary-based comics, and what that means for creators trying to get their work seen. What's the Deal with Susan MacTaggart? In a classic ComicLab aside, Brad and Dave riff on the mysterious (and confusing) name “Susan MacTaggart,” using it as an example of how something presented without context can create intrigue — or just bewilderment. It ties back humorously to their broader discussions about clarity, audience expectations, and grabbing attention. Introducing Dr. Reginald Wigglesby The episode also features the introduction of Dr. Reginald Wigglesby — a comedic bit that adds to the show's ongoing tradition of playful world-building and running gags. It's a reminder that even in a craft-focused podcast, humor and character bits are part of what makes ComicLab feel like hanging out with friends.
