Spider-Man Brand New Day Review Spider-Man is terug en hoe. We already reviewed the big movie of the week, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," earlier this week. But other movies exist in the world, so you get Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday. Here's what we discussed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day: I WANT YOUR SEX. Between this and the Wham! in China documentary, it's an accidental George Michael theme week, but we're not complaining. Olivia Wilde stars as a caustic and quick-witted dom to Cooper Hoffman's eager and besotted sub. The latest from veteran queer filmmaker Gregg Araki takes place in the heightened world of LA's contemporary art scene. This movie is a hoot. In theaters. SHEEP IN THE BOX. A rare miss from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His film explores some familiar themes about creating a family in unexpected ways, but does so in languid, superficial fashion. A couple in the near future brings a synthetic boy into their home to replace the 7-year-old son they lost. Sounds like a moving premise, but this never grabbed us. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Another extra-long segment because there was so much to discuss, including the huge Thursday box office for "Spider-Man," news out of Comic-Con, Disney canceling "Wonder Man," and the tragic death os Glen Hansard. Grab your Comic-Con lanyards and punch your train tickets, because the studio is taking a trip to the underworld! This week on The Filmlosophers, Hosts Eddie and Spencer are joined by the ever-glorious Intern Manager/Managing Intern Amy for a massively packed episode discussing the latest in pop culture and a legendary Broadway hit hitting the big screen. The San Diego Comic-Con Aftermath Before the crew boards the train to the underworld, they unpack the massive, earth-shattering news that rocked their pop-culture hearts at last week's San Diego Comic-Con. With the dust settling from the ultimate nerd Mecca, Eddie, Spencer, and Amy unveil what hit them the hardest from the convention floor. The team geeks out over Marvel's historic Hall H presentation, buzzing over the massive announcements of Ryan Gosling joining the MCU as Ghost Rider and the highly anticipated confirmation of Black Panther 3. The trio also dives into the jaw-dropping Avengers: Doomsday trailer, dissecting Robert Downey Jr.'s terrifying debut as Victor Von Doom and what it means for the future of the cinematic universe. A Cinematic Journey to Hadestown Once the convention hype is unpacked, the team ventures far below to review their cinematic experience of the absolute box-office juggernaut, Hadestown: The Musical. The crew discusses the historic achievement of the professional live stage capture, which was filmed with the original Broadway cast in London and just shattered the theatrical record previously held by Hamilton. Eddie and Amy are Team Hadestown 100%, wholly celebrating the impeccable artistry, the breathtaking musicality of Anaïs Mitchell's score, and the phenomenal performances of stars like Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada. However, things get a little heated as they try to understand Spencer's deep frustrations with the narrative execution of the century-old myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. While the entire table admires the sheer talent in every scene, Spencer reveals a few major reservations before he books his next ticket to ride this train again. Is this pro-shot a masterpiece of modern theater, or does the myth get lost in the music? It's time to raise a cup and find out! It's a lighter Friday edition of Shoot Around, just Horry and Rob Jenners running through the week's fan questions and whatever's been living in their group chat.   They start with Austin Reaves catching heat for putting himself in his own all-time starting five (next to Steph, Kobe, LeBron, and Shaq, for the record), then get into Arizona State's new bachelor's degree in "influencing" and whether that's actually a legitimate skill set or just a punchline. That turns into a fun tangent about what they'd each go back to school for if money and logic weren't an issue.   From there it's an equitable-grading-scale story that has both of them fired up, a debate about participation trophies, and a trip down memory lane on old-school discipline. Then the mood shifts: Rick Moranis got a five-minute standing ovation at Comic-Con after coming out of retirement for Spaceballs 2, and the guys get into why that moment hit different, along with the actual Spaceballs 2 synopsis and whether it can live up to the original.   They close it out plotting their own eventual Comic-Con trip, including costume ideas for a seven-foot-tall Robert Horry.   00:00  Cold Open & Friday Check-In 01:36  Austin Reaves' All-Time Starting Five 03:57  Arizona State's Degree in Influencing 07:09  What They'd Go Back to School For 10:02  The Equitable Grading Scale Debate 12:34  Participation Trophies & Old-School Discipline 13:57  Rick Moranis' Comic-Con Standing Ovation 15:43  Spaceballs 2 Is Actually Happening 17:54  Comic-Con Costume Ideas & Bucket List

But, here’s a local story of interest: After seven years of planning, a new seniors lodge will be built in Vulcan to replace the Peter Dawson Lodge, which was built in 1963. According to spokesperson Kelly Nelson, while the Dawson Lodge is reportedly in “really good shape,” it no longer meets current building standards. “The rooms are too small, we have inside rooms without any windows to the outside,” said Nelson, adding seniors don't want to move in until they have a room with a window. The new facility, expected to open in 2028, will have 62 affordable-housing units. Vulcan Mayor Tom Grant said Thursday the new facility will be a “win-win” for the community. In 1964, a group of teenage boys organised a convention in New York – it became known as the first official Comic Con.The idea began after 16-year-old Bernie Bubnis wrote an article in his comic book fanzine. But when no-one else took on the project, he rounded up friends to help. Together, they booked a venue, arranged a date, sent out letters and posted ads. And for the star attraction, they invited legendary American comic book artist, Steve Ditko, co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. In late July, the doors opened on the first convention, kickstarting what's become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Bernie tells Jane Wilkinson how it happened. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by and curious about the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from how the Excel spreadsheet was developed, the creation of cartoon rabbit Miffy and how the sound barrier was broken. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: the moment Reagan and Gorbachev met in Geneva, Haitian singer Emerante de Pradines' life and Omar Sharif's legendary movie entrance in Lawrence of Arabia. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, like the invention of a stent which has saved lives around the world; the birth of the G7; and the meeting of Maldives' ministers underwater. We cover everything from World War Two and Cold War stories to Black History Month and our journeys into space.(Photo: Comic Con 1964 badge. Credit: Bernie Bubnis/Art Tripp)

This week we're doing our annual SDCC download, and there is a lot to unpack. We start with Avengers: Doomsday, because obviously, and get into the very Dr. Doom-heavy footage from Hall H. From there we hop to Disney+'s Percy Jackson, which just dropped a season 3 teaser and a release date (November 20!) that has book readers buzzing about how accurate this season might actually be. Then we talking about Mike Flanagan's Carrie reboot — yes, with cell phones, yes, we have thoughts — landing on Prime October 7, plus Matthew Lillard's casting as the principal, which, honestly, correct choice. And because no Comic-Con recap is complete without a little discourse, we get into Kevin Feige comparing the Doctor Doom buildup to Thanos and why fans are very much not here for it. Rounding things out, we've got Spaceballs news (Rick Moranis showed UP, people), a surprisingly moving story about how fan campaigning got Coyote vs. Acme un-shelved and into actual theaters, and just an overall reminder that this fandom stuff still means something to people. We close things out with recs: Laura's hydrating her face with the Elf Holy Hydration moisturizer, Eric's deep in Star Trek mode with the Improvised Star Trek podcast (start on episode 85, "The Search for Sock"), and Pam wants you to buy local produce when you can to avoid the current explosive diarrhea outbreak sweeping the nation.
