This week we speak with Beth Miller on the topic of spirituality. This episode is not about one particular religion, but rather about how spirituality is one important aspect of emotional well-being. Some of the important aspects of spirituality are faith, love, surrendering, and forgiveness. The year 2020 has brought a lot of pain and confusion due to the pandemic, but also many opportunities for companies to show compassion and generosity. And that willingness to help others can sometimes reap rewards in the marketplace. That’s exactly the story my guest in this episode of the Modern Marketing Engine, Adriel Sanchez, CMO at Newsela shares. Newsela provides instructional content to K-12 schools in the United States, serving 35 million children. What do they do exactly? They take content from reliable sources around the web and incorporate changes to make it ready for the classroom. First, they rewrite every piece of content at 5 different reading levels, so in a single class every student can access the content at their own reading level. Then, they surround content with instructional support for teachers, so it would be easy for them to embed the content into their lessons. And finally, Newsela attaches the content to individual grade standards by state (over 130K in the US), through machine learning, algorithms and human intervention. Newsela is both business-driven (they are a for-profit company) and mission-driven (making education better for as many teachers and students as possible). This podcast is brought to you by Postal.io. A Sales and marketing engagement platform that generates leads increases sales and improves customer retention. Request a demo to learn how to integrate direct mail and gift into your existing strategy by visiting Postal.io. Doing What is Right for Your Customer Newsela went from one to four products in January, 2020, with great plans of expansion. Then the pandemic hit in mid-March and education was one of the hardest-hit sectors. Most schools around the US closed. Many teachers and students were unprepared for the shift to remote learning, with some school districts panicking over what to do, as they lacked the resources to implement remote education. Although Newsela has four stakeholders (Education Administrators, Students and Teachers, Investors, and Newsela employees), they could not serve the immediate interests of all four at the same time during the COVID lockdowns. Adriel says they decided to do the right thing for the schools above the business needs. So they provided their entire product portfolio for free to students and teachers. No conditions, no questions asked. All schools had to do was ask for it. How did they implement the plan? They came up with three phases to their response to the crisis. Provide the product for free and get the word out. This phase included a message from the CEO and social media outreach. Word got out quickly and in the first 7 days 15,000 schools signed up. At the end of the program, two thirds of US schools (about 90,000) had signed up for some component of Newsela. Make sure the product was adopted. Adriel says that it wasn’t enough to give away the product. They needed to make sure people were using the platform and getting value. During March and April of 2020, virtual classes were new to teachers. So Newsela deployed training 7 days a week and had 1 to 1 coaching for teachers and administrators. A lot of people were exposed to Newsela’s team and people really appreciated the support they provided. If they provided that kind of support for non paying customers, how would it be if they paid? This focus on customer service paved the way for future sales conversations. Start sales conversations. By June 2020, Newsela was preparing to turn some of those free users into paid subscribers. The fact that they had given the product for free, no matter if the schools were open or closed, gave them trust and credibility with their customer base. People really felt supported. “Timing was very important,” Adriel says. “Start too early and you could be perceived as exploitive. Start too late and you could miss out on budget allocations elsewhere, competitors and other priorities.” Sellers had to be situationally aware when they started those sales conversations. So the marketing team at Newsela identified 10 criteria to start sales conversations, analyzing macro and micro leading indicators, state by state. Here are some examples of the indicators they used. Macro leading indicators Had states released a budget? Were schools closed or still open for in-person sessions? How much did states receive from the Federal education budget? Micro leading indicators Had administrators asked about pricing after June 30th when the free period was over? Was there a renewal scenario? All the information was tracked in the system for sales. Sellers were able to track it state by state and account by account, looking for patterns on a weekly basis. Adriel says the effort was a collaboration between marketing, sales and product. “It was a Marketing-led initiative, who owned market intelligence (stimulus funding, budgets, etc.). But sales ops helped to rollout, track, and adjust as they learned things in the field.” The CRM tracked two basic metrics: Rate of account contact (were schools taking the calls from the sellers?) All Systems Go metric (was the account ready for a sales conversation based on the macro and micro criteria?) Sellers would look for patterns by state in the CRM to see if they were open and ready, so they could be more upfront with their sales conversations. Reaping the Rewards Although 70% of education companies offered something free during the first few months of the pandemic, only 25% saw an increase in paid subscribers. Newsela was part of that 25% and growth surpassed their expectations, reaching their 2020 revenue goal in August 2020. They started with the idea of what is the right thing to do for their customers and the hypothesis that the marketplace would reward them for that, was validated. They now have sales conversations with entire states and school districts that they never had in the past. Listen to this episode to hear more about Newsela’s story and how showing that you care can result in increased revenue.
Family dynamics are always tricky to navigate, especially around the holiday season. Dr. Jessica Lougheed focuses her research on family dynamics, and specifically on conflict resolution. In this episode she shares two important scales family can use to measure a healthy family dynamic: 1) family cohesion: the balance between separateness and connectedness2) family flexibility: the balance between stability and change. Family conflict is a natural part of human life and can be healthy if it’s resolved in an appropriate way. Dr. Lougheed also gives practical techniques for resolving conflicts. Some examples include meta communication where families talk about how they communicate, defensive statements, mindful listening, and “I” statements. Most importantly, she shares how emotional repair after conflict can lead to better connections within relationships. This episode will help prepare you for navigating your family dynamics this holiday season and beyond! Through dealing with the west coast forest fires and balancing multiple different hybrids of in-school and at-home learning, Oregon mortgage broker and mother of six, Claire Mahoney has learned a thing or two about controlling chaos. Having had an employee quit with no warning and two others get pregnant at the same time, Claire has managed to not just uphold her high expectations, but has set up her brokerage for long-term growth. Now VP of Mortgage First Corp, Claire made sure to earn her position; demanding her boss (and father) that she start from the bottom and work her way to the top. Now in a position to make serious change, Claire has learned that the best way to balance the proven old school techniques that built their local reputation with the new modern technology that will bring them into the future is by trial testing everything herself and applying what works in small, incremental and easily digestible doses. She started simply, by making a Facebook page and Yelp listing, and signing up for online e-signature software Docusign. Through this, Claire learned to slow down onboarding of new tech, constantly reassess and adjust expectations and to always keep an open line of true communication and dialogue with her loan officers and processors. Claire’s real estate agent husband Matt also joins the podcast to share his thoughts on the wholesale channel, how to best stay top of mind with real estate referrals and why he believes brokers truly are better. Today's Guest Joanna Hennon and I are back with another co-hosted episode! Today, we talk about how to get past your addiction to busyness. I’ve talked about this before, in episode 321 on How to Balance Your Focus Between the Journey and the Destination. This is something I really struggle with: I now give myself permission to take time off and rest when I need to...yet I feel guilty about it, which kind of defeats the purpose. I thought I had broken my addiction to busyness, but Joanna pointed out to me that the fact that I have so much guilt over being un-busy means that it’s still alive and kicking. I was a bit shocked when she said that to me before we started recording, and I also knew she was right. Life is a balance: between effort and ease, between work and rest, between being busy and un-busy. Every moment of every day, we have a choice, and unfortunately many of us do not make this a conscious choice. We just DO. We’re so focused on DOING that we often forget to FEEL. As Joanna says in this episode, we’re so focused on our goals that we forget the journey — and even worse, we forget that the journey is OUR LIFE. Let that sink in for a minute. I wish you a lifetime of balance, from here on out. I know that experiencing balance is like building a muscle: we’ve got to choose it, regularly and consistently. It takes work. It takes effort. And it’s worth it. I hope you find this episode useful, as always! I know I did. More About Joanna Hennon Joanna is a #SoulSmart Success Mentor - she helps people to easily create more success by using the wisdom and power we all have access to at soul level. This is the 2nd week of our new series, "Playing for Keeps," which looks at how we can invest in the relationships closest to us. Today we looked at how it takes Love over Time to give WORTH to the people were care about. _______________________________________________________ NOTES: Love is Everywhere Take music Tina Turner Video: "What's Love Got to Do With It" Take tv The Bachelor/ette _______________________________________________________ God’s Idea/Design From beginning God designs us for companionship For relationships and for community 1) We were created to love and be loved. Love is More than Emotion Requires time, commitment We can get so busy that we forget to make love a priority Can be intentional or unintentional _______________________________________________________ Making love a priority is something pharisees could/should have done. Pharisees Religious leaders who believed in God Spent much time learning about God Doing the workof God, obeying God's laws holding others accountableto it Doingwhat they thought mattered to God Always went to the Temple Cared about what others thought Tirelessly studiedScripture They were busy learning about God, they missed what mattered most. Missed what LOVE over TIME can do. Jesus reprioritized matters in just a few sentences … Matthew 22:34-40 (NIV) 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Great Commandment: Love Matters Love Matters Loving God matters Loving yourself matters Loving people matters And they all work together interdependently Great Commandment at Work Loving God helps you love yourself helps you love others. Loving yourself helps you love God. helps you love others. Loving others helps you love God. helps you love yourself. AND ALL are true at the same time. 2 ) When it comes to love, don’t minimize what God maximizes. Mt 22: 34-40 Jesus: Love Matters 3) Love over time is the best way to give somebody worth. _______________________________________________________ Self-Worth Don’t Underestimate Worth’s Importance Worth is crucial to our survival and well-being. Worth isn’t something that can be trivialized or overemphasized. Everybody needs to be loved in a way that convinces us that we are worth something. _______________________________________________________ Love in Two Forms: Conditional and Unconditional Article: Recognize Your Conditions of Worth Unconditional love: is when we are loved for who we are, no matter what we do. Conditional love is when we are loved for doing what other people want us to do. From the Article: In the ideal world all we would have is unconditional love, but in reality we are surrounded by conditional love, which we receive from the authority figures in our life - our carers, parents, teachers and religiouseducators, media and television. The child whose school report is poor and whose parents react with anger. The girl who is told constantly by her mother how proud she is of how pretty she is. The boy, whose coach shouts at him for missing a kick. All of these are ways in which children learn what they must do to be valued: to do well at school, to be beautiful or to be athletic, for example. Conditions of worth are the messages we take on board about what we have to do to be valued. ________________________________________________________ Pharisees (Conditional) vs Jesus (Unconditional) Conditional love is what the Pharisees offered. And it eroded others’ sense of worth. Unconditional love is what Jesus offered. and it breathed life into both individuals and communities. Eroded Sense of Worth Without worth, little belief in ourselves little hope that things will improve little power over our circumstances Achieving future possibilities depends on our feeling worthy of such achievement AND If LOVE over TIME generates worth … Converse of this statement is true: Little LOVE over TIME destroys worth. … AND Conditional love over time generates conditional worth. ________________________________________________________ APPLY How to Show Love Over Time? Romans 5:8 (NIV) 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. So How do we show love over time? Consistency, model good boundaries, grace/forgiveness, empathy, forgiveness Through Self-Sacrifice Playing for Keeps: LOVE Playing for Keeps is getting seriousabout what wedo with our time. When we PfK, we put LOVE over TIME Author and artist C. JoyBell quote: “They say you have to earn the right to be loved; no, love is unconditional, if you love someone, they don’t have to earn it. But. The right to tell someone that you love them? That has to be earned. You have to earn the right to be believed.”
June is pride month, although I’d argue that every month should be about loving others no matter what they look like, what their sexual orientation is, or what their life story is. In my opinion, as long as you aren’t hurting anyone else, you have every right to be you, just like I have every right to be me. That may be my view, but I was curious, with the rise of an inclusive culture and social responsibility, how are companies and investors supporting the LGBTQia+ community. My guest and fellow millennial is Jay Lipman, co-founder, and president of the Fintech asset management sustainable investing firm Ethic. On this episode, we're covering a lot of topics including social responsibility investing and what companies are doing to support the LGBTQia+ community. What You'll LearnAre we seeing a strong shift in companies towards better equality with LGBTQ workers or are we still just talking about it without any definitive actionHow and why are companies aligning their investment portfolios to support the LGBTQia+ community If you’re an investor and want to support the LGBTQ community, are there certain things you can be doingWhat lead Jay to a career in social entrepreneurshipWhat are trends that are emerging in the social/sustainable investing spaceWhat can we do as millennials with less cash to build a sustainable investing practiceLinksEthicSUBSCRIBE & SHAREWant to be the first to know when new episodes are released? Welcome to Planet GEMS! I’m Dr. Tom Orent… aka, the GEMS guy! This podcast is for General dentists and prosthodontists, in solo or small group practices. If you are tired of managed care insurance dictating how much you can charge, and meddling in the doctor-patient relationship… if you’d like to become at least a little less dependent… or even Independent of PPOs… if you’d like to measurably improve case acceptance, make much more money while working LESS time, then you’re in the right place. This podcast is for you if you’d like to do more of your best dentistry and help your patients achieve optimal health… while you have MORE FUN and LESS stress as a result. I’m here to help you achieve your goals… especially if those goals include creating WEALTH and AUTONOMY for you and your family. The CoalMine to GoldMine podcast is not for you if you are a SPECIALIST. It’s not for you if you are in a large group practice with ½ dozen or more general dentists… and it’s definitely not for you if you are part of a doc in the box CHAIN of DSOs. If you are an open-minded general dentist willing to try EASY new concepts and strategies, then WELCOME to PLANET GEMS! Why Do I Call it Coalmine to Goldmine? Because it describes my journey. Nearly 23 years ago, on a cold rainy Friday afternoon in October, I found myself sitting in the office of a Boston bankruptcy attorney. I was over $1,000,000.00 in debt. My wife had enough and demanded a divorce. The only team member who knew just how bad things were financially was my office manager. She knew how little I had left... so she decided to take the rest. I was being embezzled! During my first 15 years in dental practice, I focused on clinical dentistry. Practice management, the "business" of dentistry, and especially the "numbers" made my eyes glaze over. I figured if I needed to grow the practice I'd just learn one more clinical technique. Take another continuum. Buy some cool high-tech dental equipment. And so it went. I completed the entire Dawson continuum. Learned a ton from Pete (he even wrote the foreword to one of my books). Deeper and deeper in debt I sank. First Dentist in MA Accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry I devoted two years to prepare for the AACD accreditation examination. Loved esthetic dentistry. I was the first dentist in Massachusetts to be accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Subsequently served as an accreditation examiner for 6 years. I don't say this to brag, simply to point out that I buried my head in the sand when it came to learning how to run a business and spent every minute and dollar chasing my tail. I could go on about the other continuum, courses, and clinical achievements but I'm sure you've done your share and more. We all do. Fact is you've got to just to keep up. Nonetheless becoming the best clinical dentist I could be didn't put money in the jar or bread on the table. Turns out it's everything but clinical skills that make a practice thrive financially. Sure, you've got to have the clinical skills. Patients assume (expect) it. But it's everything else that makes the difference between dying with a drill in your hand and creating AUTONOMY... Building wealth and a legacy for yourself and your family. Autonomy means Doing WHAT you want With WHOM you want WHEN you want and Only IF you want. Losing bankruptcy as an option turned out to be life-changing in the most positive way for me. Until the divorce, I was happy enough. Getting by. Enjoyed dentistry. Had enough money (or at least enough credit cards) to get the things I wanted. I was getting by. But the debt kept piling up, there was nothing set aside to pay for the kids' college educations, and there was certainly no "plan" for retirement (other than to die drill in hand). With bankruptcy off the table, I set out on a new mission. I now had two (split) households to feed and FAILURE WAS NO LONGER AN OPTION. My mission was to go out into the business world and learn everything I could about how successful businesses thrive. I'd pick up a "Gem" here, a "Gem" there... and bring 'em back to my practice. Then it was my job to figure out how to take a concept or strategy from the business world and craft it to work in my dental practice. Neat thing is that once you discover the right ones... "Gems Are Easy!" And they don't take much time. But they can have a MAJOR POSITIVE IMPACT on the health and well-being of your patients... your team, and your INCOME! In relatively short order I turned my practice around. Then I did the same for my dad's practice when he passed away from cancer. I sat alongside his bed at the Mass General Hospital as told me that his practice was in debt, no life insurance, and nothing put away for my mother. His dying wish was that Elizabeth and I turn his practice around and give my mother a secure financial future. We did exactly that. And we did so by deploying the same simple "Gems" we'd discovered to help us achieve financial freedom just a couple years before. Not long after that, I was able to retire from clinical practice at age 46, never having to work another day unless I chose to. “Following your heart is frequently scary but never wrong.” Today’s guest is redefining how we build and do business in the 21st century. In fact, it’s fair to say that Yanik Silver is the reason Stay Grounded exists today. He helped me put the soul in JavaPresse by giving me the tools that transformed an ordinary e-commerce coffee company into a brand that helps people “stay grounded” through the moments they love. And he’s done the same for countless other entrepreneurs too.As the founder of Evolved Enterprise and Maverick1000, Yanik’s mission is to “catalyze the catalyst”. Through his work, he empowers entrepreneurs to follow their heart, and put their fun and purpose at the heart of business. And as more businesses follow this lead, the ripples of impact spread further and further. In fact, his work is so powerful that he’s been praised by the likes of Richard Branson and his story has featured in WIRED, TIME.com, USA Today, and Entrepreneur to name just a few.So if you’re an entrepreneur who’s at a crossroads and you feel there’s something more you could be exploring, this episode is for you. So tune in now and discover what’s possible when you stop hitting snooze and take notice of your “cosmic alarm clock’ - when it calls.“I am more driven by the vision and the mission of what happens when someone steps into their highest purpose because that creates these ripples of impact that serve the planet in a tremendous way.” In this episode, we dive deep into Yanik’s philosophies about life, fun, and business. You’ll hear:Why a little bit of your soul dies when you’re not on purposeThe reason creating a better story for yourself can change your life - instantlyA simple way to uncover the signs that tell you what you should be doingWhat to do when you’re in pain to process the emotion and learn from it tooThe 33 day experiments that keep changing Yanik’s lifeHow to use enthusiasm as a marker for lifeWe also dive into Yanik’s unique journaling style and discover how a 108 day challenge turned into the Cosmic Journal project.Yanik has been one of my most important mentors in life. His insights changed the way I do business profoundly and I’m sure he’ll do the same for you too. So tune in now and discover how you can turn your company into a full expression of who you are - while changing the world at the same time.“Asking better questions is a function of courage. The more courage you have, the bigger questions you ask in your life.” How to contact Discover how Yanik does business here - https://evolvedenterprise.comLearn more about Maverick1000 here - https://maverick1000.com/We thrive on your feedback, so if you’ve enjoyed this show, please rate us and leave us a review. Let’s talk about this pressure around finding your PURPOSE. Why is it that we stress our ENTIRE LIVES looking for the ONE thing that we were supposedly put on this planet to do? What if you no longer had to pressure yourself about whether or not you’re following your life purpose? What if you understood that your life purpose had more to do with who you’re BEING rather than what you’re DOING? What if you could make an impact doing anything? What if you could make money doing anything? What if you could be HAPPY doing anything? What if it didn’t matter what the fudge you chose to do with your life, you could still be proud of who you are and in turn be following your REAL life purpose? That being following anything and everything that brought you JOY? That made you feel joyful and fulfilled? How would that free up your time, worry, stress & the pressure you are putting onto yourself constantly? What if the purpose of life was to BE the best version of you? To play, to laugh, to grow & experience the gift of life? I strongly believe I’m following my life purpose with MIND CULTURE & this Podcast. But not because of the THINGS that I’m doing every day in my business. I’m following my life purpose because MIND CULTURE allows me to be who I’m meant to be and I am HAPPY. Whether or not I became a mom, decided to start a interior design biz, or grow a farm in Hintertupfing ... as long as I am the human being I am proud to be and I’m HAPPY...I’m GOOD. We all have gifts that can be used in just about anything. There isn’t ONE specific thing you need to be doing to feel like you’ve put those gifts to use. Rather than focusing on specifics, ask yourself “how ELSE can I share my gifts with the world?” Be creative with your impact . Be creative with the sources of your joy. Open yourself to the limitless and abundance of WHO YOU ARE and WHO YOU WERE ALWAYS MEANT TO BE. You have plenty of time, plenty of purposes, and MANY gifts to share.

HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! Thanks for listening, investing in you and for sharing this podcast with others! I greatly appreciate hearing from new listeners and followers, especially when it helps me realize I'm living my WORD of the Year: EXPAND! Last week's podcast was about creating YOUR Word of the Year! Did you? If not... download the worksheet here and go back and listen to podcast 145! I heard from quite a few clients and listeners and a few words were: Growth, Consistency and Focus! Great words! Keep your word handy and in front of you so you can make sure you're being intentional with your efforts. And, when you do your progress check at the end of January, you can see how living by your word is helping you. And, if for some reason you are off-track, how you need to tie your word in to help you get back on-track. And so now what? It's mid-January... ALREADY! You've got your word, your goals set (hopefully!) and your action steps. You're getting back into the groove of routine and habits. And, it's a perfect time to pause and LOOK AROUND! What are you working on? Doing? What's helping you? What is distracting or challenging you? It's all about AWARENESS. Listen in this week as I talk about the importance of awareness, especially in regard to your "DOING/TRYING SOMETHING NEW IN 2019!" Remember that challenge?! :) I talk about something NEW I (with the help of my tribe) created. And how awareness helped me develop it, and what I need to do to create MORE awareness. I look forward to hearing from you! Have a great week, Cheers! Sandi

Many people ask the question of how to be “financially content” and this is a discussion to uncover those answers. So last week we discussed what real or true financial contentment is and I broached a subject that I feel obligated to unpack just a bit. Because in order to have this true financial contentment that we are speaking about, you have spend your time doing what you love to do. Profitcast: Monetize Your Podcast | Grow a Large and Loyal Audience
We talk a lot on Profitcast about reorienting around what profiting with your podcast means for you and your situation. The traditional, or go-to, definition is monetization, and that's natural and it doesn't hurt to have that as a goal. But lately we've taken to broadening this definition. To me, profiting with my podcast means ___________. Rob and Martha Southgate seriously challenge the idea of monetization as the pinnacle of profiting with podcasting. Their story is a remarkable one, a miraculous one, we might say. In many, many ways it differs from other success stories we often hear on Profitcast; one of Brian's guests will explain the strategies he or she employed to reach the stage they are at now and can offer up suggestions or helpful hints for others currently fighting through the smog. Rob and Martha, though they have fantastic insight, truly have a unique (and likely non-reproducible) story that will challenge us in new ways. Read more...
