Which means Thiel, a billionaire doomsday prepper who thinks the Anti-Christ is Greta Thunberg, could effectively rule the world. What does Thiel's obsession with the Anti-Christ reveal about how we can resist him? Thiel's worldview isn't just weird Silicon Valley paranoia; it's vintage fascist fan fiction. His ideas trace back to Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt, who justified Hitler's violent purges as necessary for “saving civilization.” Schmitt's argument was simple and horrifying: democracy is too weak, so we need a strongman to suspend the rules. Thiel recycles Schmitt's logic in a twenty-first-century sermon on why democracy itself is the real threat. Welcome back to School Counseling Simplified. Since October is Bullying Prevention Month, this episode focuses on practical conflict resolution strategies you can use at the schoolwide, classroom, and small group levels. If you have not listened to last week's episode on restorative circles, start there for helpful background on resolution circles and community-based approaches. Today we build on that foundation with tangible tools you can use right away to help students resolve, forgive, and repair relationships. What you will learn in this episode How to use classroom-based activities to teach conflict resolution skills A simple script for I statements that students can use to express feelings and seek solutions Engagement strategies for role play, discussion, and practice Small group activities and curricula that support peer problem solving Steps to take when a student is referred to you after a conflict Classroom strategies  Talk it out circle Use a classroom circle where two students resolve a conflict in front of their peers while the teacher or counselor facilitates a respectful discussion. This model teaches the whole class how to listen, reflect, and offer support. Counselor push-ins Join the classroom for a lesson or mediation session, while the teacher and student exit the classroom to resolve a conflict. I statement lessons Teach a simple I statement script: name the emotion, describe the incident, explain how it made you feel, and suggest a next step toward resolution. Use dry erase boards with fill-in-the-blank templates for practice. Post I statement language on classroom walls and in common areas so students have visible reminders. Role play and scenario practice Break students into small groups and use scenario cards to role play common friendship conflicts. Incorporate charades, fishbowl exercises, or paired practice to make skills stick. Small group ideas Run a conflict resolution group using discussion dice or conversation cards to guide reflection. Include hands-on activities or crafts that reinforce communication skills and empathy. Consider curricula like Kelso's Choices to teach problem-solving options for peer conflicts. When students are referred after a conflict Start by identifying the source of the conflict. Ask why this keeps happening and what the underlying triggers are. Take time to get a full picture before deciding on a plan so you do not cycle through the same issues repeatedly. Use data from observations, teacher input, and student self-report to refine your intervention. Action steps you can take today Teach and practice one I statement template with a class. Try a short talk it out circle during your next classroom visit. Today I got to talk to Brian Smith and Ed Uszynski about their new book, Away Game—A Christian Parent's Guide to Navigating Youth Sports. This is a new topic for the podcast but as soon as I saw the title pop up in my email, I was intrigued.  Youth sports are such a huge part of the lives of many families, and I love that Brian and Ed are asking the question, “where does the Gospel fit into youth sports?” Brian and Ed were collegiate athletes and now work with an organization called Athletes in Action that brings Christ into the lives of coaches and athletes of all levels. But it was when their own kids began playing youth sports that they decided to begin looking at things like: how kids and families can grow in relationship with Christ through sports, not allowing sports to become an idol, showing grace through failure, reflecting the love of Christ to every other athlete on the field, and so much more.   In their book, they talk about “spiritual formation rather than sports formation”.  And I just love their desire to make sports culture something that reflects Jesus' heart instead of making it self-focused, like so much of sports can be. We discussed the youth sports industry that really isn't about what's best for our kids, but rather about playing into our own insecurities as a parent, and the pressure we parents are putting on our kids as a result. That led us to talk about the importance of making sports about joy and fun and less about winning. 70% of kids are quitting youth sports by age 13 because the joy of play is gone for them. As Christians our joy isn't in winning or being the best, but in showing and knowing the love of Christ no matter the outcome of the game. I found this book and my conversation with Brian and Ed so encouraging and helpful. Romans 8:12-13 — What is sanctification? How is the Christian moved toward greater holiness and away from sin? In this sermon on Romans 8:12–13 titled “A Call for Action,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains that Paul has been referencing the process of sanctification throughout the book of Romans but specifically addresses the theology of it in this passage. While Romans 7 is a battlefield for a Christian's flesh and spirit, Romans 8 shows the victory that they have in Christ. While there is a war that wages in mortal bodies, God always provides a way for a Christian not to sin. A Christian is immediately released from the reign of sin by giving it over to Christ. Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains that it is a matter of their own actions and Christ does the rest. If they live by the flesh, they will die by the flesh. However, if they live by the Spirit, they are able to continually mortify their flesh and give it over to Christ. Paul is phrasing this using the present tense, meaning that this is a process where one must continually be active. Christians can rejoice that they are no longer under the obligation of the flesh and that Christ has given the Holy Spirit as their helper.
