Nothing beats the thundering energy and human drama that unfolds across the surface of an automotive racetrack. Photographers who specialize in this adrenaline-fueled niche are best served by nerves of steel and the high endurance to lug multiple cameras and the long lenses needed to freeze the action. In today's show, we plunge headfirst into what it takes to cover the many facets of auto racing with two of the finest professionals in the field, photographers Camden Thrasher and Jamey Price. From stories of unexpected hurdles to access when scouting an unfamiliar course to the mix of visual stimulation and extreme exhaustion that accompanies a 24-hour endurance race, our chat is full of real-world insights. We also discuss the gear these photographers rely on and the wear and tear that comes with hard core use. And for listeners who've always wanted to try their hand at motor sports photography, Jamey Price shares some parting advice. “You don't build a portfolio by getting credentials,” he says. “You build a portfolio by going to races as a fan, bringing your camera, and making cool pictures from fan areas. Tell stories, do something different.” Guests: Camden Thrasher & Jamey Price Episode Timeline: 3:46: Jamey's start as a jockey and making comparisons between photographing horse racing and motorsports 8:29: Camden's early start attending auto races, then discovering photography through exploring his father's film camera as a cool mechanical device. 10:25: Both photographers share their trajectory from starting out as a motor sports photographer to making it into a career. 18:04: A race day timeline and the many variables involved in motor sports photography. 27:28: Camaraderie & competition between photographers working the circuit, etiquette when shooting, and the importance of individual style. 37:24: The thrill of endurance racing and how photographing these 24-hour-long races differs from other types of motor sporting events. 43:38: Episode Break 45:10: Camden and Jamey's go-to camera gear, the long lenses they lug, plus how often they use manual focus, especially when panning through people or trees. 54:50: Getting otherworldly visuals when faced with adverse weather conditions or unique atmospheric effects, despite the physical challenges. 59:15: Wear and tear on camera gear due to the unfriendly environment at the track, plus using broken gear or common objects for creative visual effects. 1:056:08: Camera settings and creative techniques when panning, plus accounting for variables of relative distance combined with motion and speed to achieve a desired result. 1:16:27: Camden & Jamey discuss the use of their motor sports photos and licensing their images to clients. 1:24:13: Parting advice to fans interested in becoming a credentialed motor sport photographer—bring your camera to a race as a fan, and start making pictures! Guest Bios: Camden Thrasher is a motor sports photographer with a distinctive ability to capture unique scenes of fast action. Growing up in Vancouver, Washington, it was the sound of engines from a nearby racetrack that first drew him to motor sports. After becoming a fixture at the track with his camera during high school, Camden studied automotive design and engineering in college, expecting to work as an engineer or on a pit crew. But the money he was making as a side hustle with his camera convinced him to stick with photography, and he hasn't looked back since. Using a unique slow shutter speed method, perfected over many exposures, Camden revels in showcasing the abstract qualities of gleaming metal, bright lights, and dynamic action that are hallmarks of this sport. Now based out of Atlanta, Georgia, Camden's work has been commissioned by top racing teams and featured in a wide range of media, from print magazines to automotive branding campaigns. Jamey Price is an automotive photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, whose motor sports work has taken him to more than 25 countries, and across most of the continental US. Jamey's photography career began while he was competing as a thoroughbred horse racing jockey and exercise rider. During this time, he completed more than 50 races, notching 11 wins in the saddle. His life in horse racing was eventually compiled into the self-published book Chasing: Racing Life in England & Ireland. Yet, in 2011, Jamey's photography career switched from horses to horse-power. Since he began chasing race cars, his images have been published worldwide in magazines, distributed by sports imagery wire services, and featured by top commercial clients. Additionally, Jamey is a LEXAR Elite Artist, since 2014. It seems like a lot of fun when you do it, but it sounds like a daunting and overwhelming task if I were to give it a try! Watching you engage in that activity, whether it's extreme sports like skydiving or even something like public speaking, is exhilarating and inspiring. Your confidence and skill make it look effortless and enjoyable. However, just the thought of attempting it fills me with apprehension. The idea of stepping out of my comfort zone and facing the unknown can feel as intimidating as facing a formidable challenge. It's incredible how perspective plays such a significant role in how we approach different experiences.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Top shot © Kristof Ramon The dynamic arena of competitive cycling photography is not for the faint of heart. This grueling specialty requires a mix of split-second reaction times, intuitive technical mastery, and the ability to anticipate—and even more important—embrace risk. It takes a special breed of photographer to continuously capture every ounce of emotion packed into this sport, from bruising injuries and bitter disappointments to the exaltation of a win. For today's show, we've brought together two passionate cycling aficionados, former competitive cyclist and renowned street photographer Phil Penman and Kristof Ramon, a cycling photography specialist who recently released his first book on the subject. While they're introduced as strangers, get ready to be wowed by the synchronicity of their shared experiences, and the remarkable chemistry that grows between them over the course of the show. Most people's awareness of competitive cycling revolves around coverage of the Tour de France or other major races shown on TV. Our conversation delves much deeper than this, to reveal what happens behind the scenes, and show both the intensity of purpose and the many stages of suffering that's a hallmark of this sport. Kristof's book is titled The Art of Suffering for a reason. As he aptly sums up in the book's opening quote: “Where the conditions get grimmer and the riders start to suffer, that's when the more interesting stories begin.” Guests: Phil Penman & Kristof Ramon Episode Timeline: 3:56: Phil Penman's connection to the competitive cycling world and how his insight as a cyclist informs his photography of the sport. 7:45: The logistics of photographing competitive cycling and the perils of damaging photo equipment. 10:36: The creative aspect to photographing competitive cycling and how to think outside the box to get impactful shots. 15:16: The many stages of suffering involved in competitive cycling, and the pride riders take in having this documented visually. 20:35: Photographer access, the difference between training rides and race days, and the distinctions between agency access and working independently. 26:26: Changes to Kristof's photographic approach and the influence of social media in the sport's evolution. 31:31: Technical aspects of cycling photography, understanding light, capturing speed, and putting in the time so to react intuitively to picture opportunities. 43:44: Episode Break 44:53: Communication strategies, building rapport with riders and teams, and people skills given the sport's international reach. 47:51: Cycling's rich history as a professional sport, and recent changes initiated by British Team Sky that helped the sport evolve. 54:45: The back story to Kristof's Art of Suffering book project and how his collaboration with cycling writer Matt Rendell helped identify suffering as a narrative element. 58:40: Working with clients, balancing that work with personal projects, and developing a distinctive voice as a photographer. 1:06:15: How to start out as a competitive cycling photographer, questions about credentials, and adapting to new networks to distribute your work. 1:13:23: Balancing technical aspects of action photography with the desired emotional response while building in certainties and calculating risk. Guest Bios: British-born, New York-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the ever-changing scene of New York City's streets for more than 25 years. and he has quite a bit of experience in the world of professional cycling himself. In his career as a news and magazine photographer, Phil has photographed major public figures and historical events. His reportage following the 9/11 terrorist attack was featured in major print publications and media broadcasts worldwide, and his work covering New York City's pandemic lockdown is in the collection of the U.S. Library of Congress. In addition to exhibiting at Leica galleries in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and London, Phil's signature street photography has appeared in international exhibitions as far afield as Venice, Berlin, and Sydney. He also tours the world teaching photo workshops for Leica Akademie. Phil's books, "Street" published in 2019, and "New York Street Diaries" published in 2023 both became best-sellers and have been featured at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Kristof Ramon is a pro-cycling photographer who covers some of the world's most prestigious races, including the Tour de France, the Giro d' Italia, the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix. Born and raised in Belgium, Kristof discovered photography while attending film school at age 19. He eventually followed his passion for cycling and photography and has focused exclusively on this sport since 2011. Working under the name Kramon, his talent for storytelling and his ability to capture the atmosphere and raw emotion of racing makes his images stand out from typical race photography. Kristof's reputation has earned him the respect and trust of many of the biggest racing teams and riders - which is why he's able to capture such extraordinary in-between moments and behind-the-scenes images. The riders are always his primary focus, as evidenced in his close-up portraits of racers caked in sweat, mud, dust, snow, and grime. Kristof's first book, The Art of Suffering, was released in June 2024 by Laurence King Publishing. The idea of pulling a large parachute behind you until the wind catches it, then running down a mountainside until you're swept up into the air… is called paragliding. Susie can't stop talking about Luigi Mangione and the stranger-than-fiction nature of his crime and his similarities to the Unabomber. Sarah explains why the HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) acronym about needs should include a P for pain as well. We discuss the Billboard designation of Beyonce as the artist of the century, whether it's premature (since we're only 25 years into the century) and why they are putting entertainment over musicianship. We find out how scientists are engineering wood to have fungus that creates bioluminescence and how these properties could help with climate change. We discuss extreme sports among seniors and why the risk might be outweighed by the benefits. Sarah explains the differences among givers, takers, and people who offer "affordances" in conversation, and where we fit on the spectrum. Plus, we debate a lawsuit by a man who sued a restaurant for calling wings "boneless" after he nearly died from swallowing a bone, and why we're furious about the outcome.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get $10 off your first month's subscription and free shipping when you go to https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code BRAINCANDYThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Jeannette is joined by Amber Nuttall and Alistair Gosling all the way from COP29 in Azerbaijan to discuss their journey from launching the Extreme Sports channel to evolving their business into a platform focused on adventure, sustainability, and community engagement. Alistair shares insights on the entrepreneurial spirit driving change in the environmental sector, while Amber highlights the importance of amplifying diverse voices at COP29. KEY TAKEAWAYS The current emphasis is on environmental sustainability, with a strong belief that everyone can contribute to positive change. The goal is to inspire a broad audience to take action, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the need for "8 billion imperfect environmentalists." At COP29, the primary focus is on finance and the need for substantial investment in sustainability initiatives. The discussions aim to encourage governments to make impactful decisions that will shape the future of environmental efforts. There is a growing trend of entrepreneurs and innovative companies stepping up to address environmental challenges. Examples include sustainable brands gaining traction and initiatives like the Earthshot Prize recognising impactful organisations. We should encourage individuals and organisations to embrace bravery, boldness, and brilliance in their efforts to create a sustainable future, while also recognising the need for balance in addressing both climate and technological advancements. BEST MOMENTS "We inspired a good few million people around the world to go and get active, drive health, fitness, well-being through getting into adventure and extreme sports." "We need 8 billion imperfect environmentalists in the world today. We don't need a handful of perfect ones." "What I'm loving seeing is the entrepreneurial spirit shining through where entrepreneurs are taking advantage and really drilling into opportunities to change the dial." "It's very clear. It's finance. It's all about finance this year... we can only hope that our governments come together and make the right decisions around that." In this episode, we dive deep into the concept of safety in freediving, exploring how it's not just about avoiding danger, but about fostering awareness, planning, and mindful presence. I share insights from my training session, where I attempt a maximum distance dive in dynamic apnea. Freediving, as I've come to understand, requires a unique blend of technical precision, mental focus, and a safety mindset developed over time. The episode delves into the three essential phases of safety in freediving: mental preparation, handling challenges during the dive, and, if needed, rescue by a safety diver. Through personal reflections and moments of mindfulness, I discuss how these principles apply not only underwater but also in navigating life's uncertainties. Freediving has taught me to embrace the present, push boundaries safely, and seek awareness over fear—lessons that can transcend into every part of life. Whether you're a seasoned freediver or someone seeking inspiration on the importance of resilience and mindfulness, this episode is for you. Join me as we explore what it means to go beyond “safe” and step into a life truly lived, fully alive. The tag line of the Norseman Triathlon is “This Race is Not For You.” The Norseman is a full distance triathlon in Norway comprised of a freezing cold 2.4 mile swim, over 10,000 feet of climbing in 112 miles, and a marathon with a hill called “Zombie Hill.” Over 5000 people apply each year for only 250 slots. So what motivated Frankie Forzoni, as a newbie triathlete, to enter the lottery and claim her spot? Her story is incredible. She was hit by a car in 2020 and had serious injuries, began swimming in her rehab, and decided to jump into triathlon. The Norseman was her FIRST long course triathlon and not only that, she trained for this race in hot and flat Singapore. But once you hear Frankie talk in this podcast, you will realize why and how she succeeded in one the hardest triathlons in the world. This is a great race recap, from her build to equipment, to race day. Have a listen!

Welcome to Lunacy; where we discern the sacred from the insane and admit that whether we like it or not, we are all profoundly affected by the cycles of the moon.Today on LUNACY, I talk to my new friend Caulen Lauria about Restorative Wellness and Extreme Sports. In this episode, I freeze my nipples off at -200°, get my elbow electrocuted, and get blasted in the face with hot red light. One for the books. : )Caulen and I dig deep into why restorative and preventative wellness works so well. We talk about the Cryochamber and its benefits after I stand in there for five minutes. We discuss the benefits of PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) after using it on my elbow. Naturally, we talk about the cold plunge and why that works, as well as several other modern therapies at his facility, Cryobodyworks in Austin, TX.Then we dig into Caulen's love of terrifying, but invigorating sports like Wing-Suiting and Superbiking. This leads to a philosophical discussion about the benefits of living dangerously without being a danger, and the profound benefits of, and need for, fierce love in this world. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
Today, I chat with Balwinder Bhatla, AKA Mr. Whisper, a London-based visual storyteller and professional photographer. Bal specialises in delicious candid low-light street photographs, taking us on walks where the urban landscape transforms into a very different kind of place, where every pool of light or mysterious shadow becomes a photographer's muse. He has shot stories in his style for BMW, Netflix, Google and Disney, including making a series of pictures to promote Star Wars Rogue 1. And it all started when his wife commented, “The cool kids are using this app called Instagram.” Also, on the show and from the mailbag, Mat Bobby has the most incredible personal story of how showing some pictures on a wall led to a life friendship with his photographic hero. There's a Haiku from Chris Hughes inspired by an Australian reservoir, how Colin Mayer's Extreme Sports experience turned into a love affair with photography instead, Phil Ferris is lost somewhere in the north of England and we'll pick the flask winner from last month's assignment entries. Self-actualization in business and life is a lot like inventing a snowboarding move, or preparing for the Crossfit Games. You have to set a vision, have awareness, and do the work while still pacing yourself. The scary truth is: a lot of people will never self-actualize because we're afraid of this process. But there is a process you can implement to make self-actualization easier. Today, I'm joined by two athletes and entrepreneurs, Sylvania Harron and Jeff Lavin. We talk about what extreme sport can teach us about self-actualization and the secret to great leadership. The first thing a team leader needs is self-awareness. You must know your strengths and weaknesses. Typically, people think they can do everything, but true success comes from focusing on what you do best and finding others to support the areas where you're weaker. This involves clarifying what you excel at (level 8 skills) and focusing on those, while delegating other tasks to those who can handle them better. Achieving anything great requires you to focus on the nitty gritty and the 30,000ft view. at the same time. Great leaders can zoom in on the minutest details and also zoom out to see the bigger picture. In high-performance scenarios, understanding when to push hard and when to pace yourself is critical. This approach prevents burnout and ensures sustainable performance over the long term. Many people are scared of self-actualization. They avoid facing their dreams and fears because they're afraid of failure and the hard work required to reach their highest potential. However, facing these fears head-on and becoming self-aware are crucial steps toward personal and professional growth. Inventing a snowboarding trick can teach us a lot about self-actualization. You need to have air awareness, understanding the bail points to avoid injury if things go wrong, and adhere to the four P's: Practice, Patience, Persistence, and Perspective. Practice involved countless reps, refining your skills continuously. Persistence means getting back up after every fall, despite the setbacks. Perspective required external feedback, analyzing the metrics or watching video footage to align your performance with your goals. Prevent Burnout with a Purposeful Plan: Taking a Sports Approach to Agency Growth Karley, a former pro-level mountain biker and passionate sports enthusiast, attributes the most significant impact of sports in her life to the structure it provides. As a creative thinker prone to distraction, she values the discipline and routine that sports have instilled in her, enabling her to focus and succeed. For her, it's been easier to absorb business lessons by drawing parallels between sports and business, which is how she's gotten to important shifts like taking a rest week every six to seven weeks of the year to catch up, think about the agency's vision, and breathe. Like navigating a challenging trail in the mountains, running an agency requires determination, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose. However, the most important thing you can do to prevent burnout is to have a plan. Many agency owners let the day-to-day consume them until they feel the only way out of the constant stress is to get out of the business altogether and sell the agency. At this point, they need a clear plan detailing the short-term and long-term goals they're aiming for that will provide a direction and strategy. Additionally, Karley's advice to agency owners is to ensure the journey is as fulfilling as the destination. Just like in outdoor adventures where the climb must be worth the descent, agency owners should find joy and fulfillment in the process of growing their business. By integrating elements that excite and motivate them into their plans, agency owners can maintain their passion and drive toward success. In this sense, she recommends agency owners to "plan to thrive, not survive" as a key mindset to adopt in order to achieve success and growth in their businesses. Plan to Thrive: Teamwork and Collaboration for Agency Success Just like preparing for a challenging adventure like hiking the Grand Canyon takes planning ahead and anticipating challenges in order to thrive in the face of adversity. Agency owners should remember that, just like hiking a mountain, doing it all by yourself can prove to be very difficult and even boring. Having a strong team and a supportive network can make all the difference in your journey. By surrounding yourself with a team of smart and capable individuals, you can leverage their strengths, make better decisions, and achieve greater success as a collective unit. For Karley, watching her team thrive is very rewarding and something you can only get through collaboration, teamwork, and shared decision-making in overcoming challenges and celebrating victories together. Ditching the Fear Mindset Operating from a Place of Passion Right now, the next stage for Karley is to prepare to sell her core methodology, which she was able to develop and systemize during the pandemic. As she prepares to turn it into a licensable system, she is admittedly stepping into a scary part of the process, a prospect that both excites and scares her. Despite her apprehension, she is determined not to let fear be the driving force behind her efforts. Due to the many stresses of agency life, owners can end up fueled by the fear of failure, which is a horrible way to live. Karley encourages agency owners to be aware of what the dangers are but avoid running from a place of fear and instead try to hold on to the enjoyment of the process. To get to this place, think about surrounding yourself with people who know how to navigate those dangers and build a team with the skills to get you out of any situation. By doing so, you can operate from a place of passion and trust in their abilities to succeed. And if you do ultimately fail, then it can serve as experience for the next adventure. In the end, there are no lives at stake. The agency may die but you're still here to keep going. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset?
