“Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish. He said, ‘I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me! You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves. Then I said, “O Lord, you have driven me from your presence. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.”'” Jonah 2:1-4The book of Jonah is without a doubt the most known book of the prophets and perhaps one of the most well known of the Old Testament. That is to say, most of the story is well known. From the earliest ages the story of Jonah and the fish or Jonah and the whale is taught in church classrooms around the world. But usually that story ends in chapter 2 . . . but there are still two more chapters to the book of Jonah and, you know what, the conversation today spends most of its time in chapter 4. To help us navigate the book of Jonah is Dr. T. Desmond Alexander, Senior Research Fellow in Biblical Studies at Union Theological College. So let's leave what you think you know about Jonah behind and strap in as Desi Alexander takes us on a really fun and thought-provoking journey into the book of Jonah. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. If you've ever found yourself feeling exhausted, under-appreciated, and wondering if private practice is really worth it, this episode is for you.In this replay of one of our classics, I'm going back to one of the very first conversations we ever had on the podcast: what an Ideal Practice actually is, and why giving yourself permission to do things your way changes everything. We'll talk about how most of us slide into a “default” practice that fits everyone but us—and what it looks like to turn that around with a few honest, clarifying questions.Yeah. This is going to help you. :))In this episode, you'll learn:Why developing your practice “by default” leaves you tired, resentful, and broke—and how to transition to something way better..The core mindset shift behind an Ideal Practice: you have both the freedom and the responsibility to design it. (You may like this and you may not, lol.)Five clarifying questions that help you get clear on who you serve, the kind of work that lights you up, and how you actually want to work. (So many choices. I know!)Real-life examples of healers who changed their schedules, adapted their services, and even learned to set better money boundaries so their practices just FIT them better. A simple reflection exercise you can do this week to celebrate what's already working — and begin changing what isn't.And you'll hear some of my favorite truths from this early episode, like:“We own it all, y'all.”

Work On Your Game: Discipline, Confidence & Mental Toughness For Sports, Business & Life | Mental Health & Mindset

Presence is when you move through a room and people feel you without you doing anything extra. It's the natural result of who you've already become, not something you push in the moment. In this class, I break down what real presence is. It's not about trying hard, forcing energy, or making people notice you.   If you're trying to look confident or make people pay attention, you're already off track. Real presence just shows up because it's part of you. Show Notes [02:55]#1 Effort looks like trying too hard. [09:29]#2 Presence is a feeling, not a performance.  [15:59]#3 Presence is a byproduct. “The Lord says to Edom, ‘I will cut you down to size among the nations; you will be greatly despised. You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. “Who can ever reach us way up here?” you ask boastfully. But even if you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down,' says the Lord.” - Obadiah 1:2-4Obadiah is the shortest book of the Old Testament. Standing at one chapter, 21 verses, it's a quick yet pointed announcement of judgment against the land of Edom. While the book is short, it didn't stop my guest and me from talking about it for nearly 45 minutes. Obadiah has a lot to teach us on what God is judging Edom about, while also warning us what to be on the lookout for in our own lives. It's a book about the results of pride, violence, and apathy. To help us navigate the book of Obadiah is Dr. Paul Raabe, Professor Emeritus of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary, author of a commentary on Obadiah, as well as a new commentary on Isaiah and Reclaiming the Creedal Jesus in America. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Sam Sanders is many things: journalist, podcaster, pop-culture obsessive, and a familiar voice from public radio. He's also ”quite possibly the world's most hesitant homeowner.” Sam wants to fix up the house he recently bought, but three things are holding him back: First, he doesn't have a clue where to start. Second, he's not very handy. And third, he's intimidated by the thought of talking with contractors (who might discover the first two things about him). In the first episode of a two-part series, Carvell Wallace brings on home improvement expert and bestselling author Mercury Stardust (aka The Trans Handy Ma'am) to guide Sam in conquering his fears. Mercury's latest book is Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair. Check out the latest episodes of The Sam Sanders Show. Doable Discipleship
    Navigating the Bible: Amos

“Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the Lord God of Heaven's Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed. Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven's Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.” - Amos 5:14-15The book of Amos has a bit of a reputation. It's not known for being the most fun of the minor prophets. It doesn't pop up in many sermons, you don't see many Bible studies focused on it. There are many reasons why this is the case. Amos is a harsh book - he doesn't hold back on what he has to say. In chapter 8 it says, “The Lord said, ‘Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again. In that day the singing in the Temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence.'” Again . . . not the most fun read. However, the true heart of the book of Amos is an incredibly important message about how you view God. It's a book about justice. It's a book about repentance. It's a book about the true heart of worship. To help us navigate the book of Amos is Dr. Danny Carroll, Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College. Danny has studied, taught, and written about Amos for decades, including writing some commentaries on the book. Today he'll explain why Amos has captured his attention for so long, why it's such a unique book in the prophets, and how the church, particularly in America, should pay extra attention to its warnings.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland.
