Anne-Mathije Bogerd modereert. Met bijdragen van Jan-Hendrik Bakker, Michel Dijkstra, Marlies De Munck, Pablo Lamberti, Miriam Rasch, Dianne Sommers, Martine Prange, Mark Reybrouck, Marthe Kerkwijk, Wendy Tollenaar en Naomi Kloosterboer.

Bart Geeraedts ging in gesprek Jan-Hendrik Bakker.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [Simulators seminar sequence] #1 Background & shared assumptions, published by Jan Hendrik Kirchner on January 2, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Meta: Over the past few months, we've held a seminar series on the Simulators theory by janus. As the theory is actively under development, the purpose of the series is to discover central structures and open problems. Our aim with this sequence is to share some of our discussions with a broader audience and to encourage new research on the questions we uncover. Below, we outline the broader rationale and shared assumptions of the participants of the seminar. Shared assumptions Going into the seminar series, we determined a number of assumptions that we share. The degree to which each participant subscribes to each assumption varies, but we agreed to postpone discussions on these topics to have a maximally productive seminar. This restriction does not apply to the reader of this post, so please feel free to question our assumptions. Aligning AI is a crucial task that needs to be addressed as AI systems rapidly become more capable. (Probably a rather uncontroversial assumption for readers of this Forum, but worth stating explicitly.) The core part of the alignment problem involves "deconfusion research." We do not work on deconfusion for the sake of deconfusion but in order to engineer concepts, identify unknown unknowns, and transition from philosophy to mathematics to algorithms to implementation. The problem is complex because we have to reason about something that doesn't yet exist. AGI is going to be fundamentally different from anything we have ever known and will thus present us with challenges that are very hard to predict. We might only have a very narrow window of opportunity to perform critical actions and might not get the chance to iterate on a solution. However, this does not mean that we should ignore evidence as it emerges. It is essential to carefully consider the GPT paradigm as it is being developed and implemented. At this point, it appears to us more plausible than not that GPT will be a core component of AGI. One feasible-seeming approach is "accelerating alignment," which involves leveraging AI as it is developed to help solve the challenging problems of alignment. This is not a novel idea, as it's related to previously suggested concepts such as seed AI, nanny AI, and iterated amplification and distillation (IDA). Simulators refresher Going into the seminar series, we had all read the original Simulators post by janus. We recommend reading the post in the original but provide a condensed summary as a refresher below. A fruitful way to think about GPT is GPT is a simulator (i.e. a model trained with predictive loss on a self-supervised dataset) The entities simulated by GPT are simulacra (agentic or non-agentic; different objective than the simulator) The simulator terminology has appropriate connotations GPT is not (per se) an oracle, genie, agentic, . all GPT “cares about” is simulating/modeling the training distribution log-loss is a proper scoring rule Solving alignment with simulators While much of this sequence will focus on the details and consequences of simulator theory, we want to clearly state at the outset that we do this work with the goal of contributing to a solution to the alignment problem. In this section, we briefly outline how we might expect simulator theory to concretely contribute to such a solution. One slightly naive approach to solving the alignment is to use a strong, GPT-like model as a simulator, prompt it with "the solution to the alignment problem is", to cross your fingers and hit enter. The list of ways in which this approach fails is hard to exhaust and includes the model's tendency to hallucinate, the generally weak reasoning ability, as well as more fundamental issue...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A descriptive, not prescriptive, overview of current AI Alignment Research, published by Jan Hendrik Kirchner on June 6, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. TL;DR: In this project, we collected and cataloged AI alignment research literature and analyzed the resulting dataset in an unbiased way to identify major research directions. We found that the field is growing quickly, with several subfields emerging in parallel. We looked at the subfields and identified the prominent researchers, recurring topics, and different modes of communication in each. Furthermore, we found that a classifier trained on AI alignment research articles can detect relevant articles that we did not originally include in the dataset. Dataset Announcement In the context of the 6th AISC, we collected a dataset of alignment research articles from a variety of different sources. This dataset is now available for download here and the code for reproducing the scrape is on GitHub here. When using the dataset, please cite our manuscript as described in the footnote. Here follows an abbreviated version of the full manuscript, which contains additional analysis and discussion. Rapid growth of AI Alignment research from 2012 to 2022 across two platforms After collecting the dataset, we analyzed the two largest non-redundant sources of articles, Alignment Forum (AF) and arXiv. We found rapid growth in publications on the AF (Fig. 1a) and a long-tailed distribution of articles per researcher (Fig. 1b) and researchers per article (Fig. 1c). We were surprised to find a decrease in publications on the arXiv in recent years, but identified the cause for the decrease as spurious and fixed the issue in the published dataset (details in Fig. 4). Unsupervised decomposition of AI Alignment research into distinct clusters Given access to this unique dataset, we were curious to see if we could identify distinct clusters of research. We mapped the title + abstract of each article into vector form using the Allen Institute for AI's SPECTER model and reduced the dimensionality of the embedding with UMAP (Fig. 2a). The resulting manifold shows a continuum of AF posts and arXiv articles (Fig. 2b) and a temporal gradient from the top right to the bottom left (Fig. 2c). Using k-means and the elbow method, we obtain five clusters of research articles that map onto distinct regions of the UMAP projection (Fig. 2d). We were curious to see if the five clusters identified by k-means map onto existing distinctions in the field. When identifying the most prolific authors in each cluster, we noticed strong differences (consistent with previous work that suggests that author identity is an important indicator of research direction). By skimming articles in each cluster and given the typical research published by the authors, we suggest the following putative descriptions of each cluster: cluster one: Agent alignment is concerned with the problem of aligning agentic systems, i.e. those where an AI performs actions in an environment and is typically trained via reinforcement learning. cluster two: Alignment foundations research is concerned with deconfusion research, i.e. the task of establishing formal and robust conceptual foundations for current and future AI Alignment research. cluster three: Tool alignment is concerned with the problem of aligning non-agentic (tool) systems, i.e. those where an AI transforms a given input into an output. The current, prototypical example of tool AIs is the "large language model". cluster four: AI governance is concerned with how humanity can best navigate the transition to advanced AI systems. This includes focusing on the political, economic, military, governance, and ethical dimensions. cluster five: Value alignment is concerned with understanding and extracting human preferences and designing me...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Adversarial attacks and optimal control, published by Jan Hendrik Kirchner on May 22, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. Meta: After a fun little motivating section, this post goes deep into the mathematical weeds. This thing aims to explore the mathematical properties of adversarial attacks from first principles. Perhaps other people are not as confused about this point as I was, but hopefully, the arguments are still useful and/or interesting to some. I'd be curious to hear if I'm reinventing the wheel. TL;DR: When we invest the appropriate effort, the probability of random catastrophic events tends to decrease exponentially with a rate given by the rate function. One way of estimating the rate function is to solve an optimal control problem, where we have to determine the "least surprising" way that the catastrophic event comes about. The rate function equals the catastrophic event's surprise (in nats). Thus, intuitively, as we invest the effort to decrease the probability of random catastrophic events, the "difficulty" of performing an adversarial attack only increases linearly. Real talk and real estate Zillow is an American tech real-estate marketplace company that recently had (what the experts call) a small snafu. They decided they were done just being a marketplace and started buying up homes, completing light renovations, and then selling them with a profit. The whole thing went poorly; they bought houses too expensive and had to sell at a loss, costing the company $420 million and leading to large lay-offs. This story is not very interesting for anyone not directly involved. The reason I remember the whole affair is a Twitter thread that also caught the attention of Eliezer: The thread proceeds to lay out how Zillow relied too much on their automatic estimates, which (ex-ante) looked good on average, but (ex-post) manifested in the worst possible way. Or, in the words of the OP: "[They mistook] an adversarial environment for a random one." I have approximately zero knowledge about Zillow or the real estate business, so I can't comment on whether this actually is what went wrong (edit: see this comment for a more informed take!). But the distinction between a random and an adversarial environment applies beyond the Zillow example and is relevant for research in AI Safety: from adversarial examples, via adversarial training, all the way to conceivable existential risk scenarios. It is the distinction between a world where it's fine to go outside because getting struck by lightning is sufficiently unlikely and a world where somebody is trying to smite you. This post works towards achieving a mathematical understanding of what distinguishes these two worlds. Perhaps other people are not as confused about this point as I was, but hopefully, the arguments are still useful and/or interesting to some. I'll introduce a bit of extreme value theory. Then I'll demonstrate a neat connection to control theory via large deviation theory, which shows that an exponentially decreasing risk of failure translates into a linearly increasing difficulty of adversarial attacks. A random environment I'll go over the basics quickly: When you (i.e. Zillow) think of your environment as random, each house you buy is essentially a coin flip with a biased coin. If you make sure that the expected value of a deal is positive and that all the deals are (mostly) independent of each other, then you're guaranteed to accrue profits eventually. This guarantee is the law of large numbers from probability theory 101 and probably not too revolutionary for you, dear reader. But what is the probability of things going very badly? What is the probability of an extreme event or a large deviation? It should decrease (given the law of large numbers), but how fast does it decrease? Let's continue the exampl...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Elementary Infra-Bayesianism, published by Jan Hendrik Kirchner on May 8, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. TL;DR: I got nerd-sniped into working through some rather technical work in AI Safety. Here's my best guess of what is going on. Imprecise probabilities for handling catastrophic downside risk. Short summary: I apply the updating equation from Infra-Bayesianism to a concrete example of an Infradistribution and illustrate the process. When we "care" a lot for things that are unlikely given what we've observed before, we get updates that are extremely sensitive to outliers. I've written previously on how to act when confronted with something smarter than yourself. When in such a precarious situation, it is difficult to trust “the other”; they might dispense their wisdom in a way that steers you to their benefit. In general, we're screwed. But there are ideas for a constrained set-up that forces “the other” to explain itself and point out potential flaws in its arguments. We might thus leverage “the other”'s ingenuity against itself by slowing down its reasoning to our pace. “The other” would no longer be an oracle with prophecies that might or might not kill us but instead a teacher who lets us see things we otherwise couldn't. While that idea is nice, there is a severe flaw at its core: obfuscation. By making the argument sufficiently long and complicated, “the other” can sneak a false conclusion past our defenses. Forcing “the other” to lay out its reasoning, thus, is not a foolproof solution. But (as some have argued), it's unclear whether this will be a problem in practice. Why am I bringing this up? No reason in particular. Why Infra-Bayesianism? Engaging with the work of Vanessa Kosoy is a rite of passage in the AI Safety space. Why is that? The pessimist answer is that alignment is really, really difficult, and if you can't understand complicated math, you can't contribute. The optimist take is that math is fun, and (a certain type of) person gets nerd sniped by this kind of thing. The realist take naturally falls somewhere in between. Complicated math can be important and enjoyable. It's okay to have fun with it. But being complicated is (in itself) not a mark of quality. If you can't explain it, you don't understand it. So here goes my attempt at "Elementary Infrabayesianism", where I motivate a portion of Infrabayesianism using pretty pictures and high school mathematics. Uncertain updates Imagine it's late in the night, the lights are off, and you are trying to find your smartphone. You cannot turn on the lights, and you are having a bit of trouble seeing properly. You have a vague sense about where your smartphone should be (your prior, panel a). Then you see a red blinking light from your smartphone (sensory evidence, panel b). Since your brain is really good at this type of thing, you integrate the sensory evidence with your prior optimally (despite your disinhibited state) to obtain an improved sense of where your smartphone might be (posterior, panel c). P(S|E)=P(E|S)P(S)P(E) Now let's say you are even more uncertain about where you put your smartphone. It might be one end of the room or the other (bimodal prior, panel a). You see a blinking light further to the right (sensory evidence, panel b), so your overall belief shifts to the right (bimodal posterior, panel c). Importantly, by conserving probability mass, your belief that the phone might be on the left end of the room is reduced. The absence of evidence is evidence of absence. Fundamentally uncertain updates Let's say you are really, fundamentally unsure about where you put your phone. If someone were to put a gun to your head threaten to sign you up for sweaters for kittens unless you give them your best guess, you could not. This is the situation Vanessa Kosoy finds herself in. With Infra-B...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Inferring utility functions from locally non-transitive preferences, published by Jan Hendrik Kirchner on February 10, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. As part of the AI Safety Camp, I've been diving a bit deeper into the foundations of expected utility theory and preference learning. In this post, I am making explicit a connection between those two things that (I assume) many people already made implicitly. But I couldn't find a nice exposition of this argument so I wrote it up. Any feedback is of course highly welcome! Preference utilitarianism and the Von-Neumann-Morgenstern theorem. At the risk of sounding drab, I briefly want to revisit some well-trodden territory in the realm of expected utility theory to motivate the rest of this post. When we are thinking about the question of how to align advanced AI with human values, we are confronted with the question of whether we want to capture "How humans act" or "How humans should act". Both approaches have virtue, but if we're being ambitious we probably want to aim for the latter. However, our understanding of "How humans should act" is still rather confused and ready-made solutions to "plug into" an AGI are not available. Rather than tackling the entire problem at once, we might focus on one particularly well-formalized portion of ethics first. A possible answer to the question "How should I act?" comes from preference utilitarianism where we focus on satisfying everyone's preferences (as revealed by their choices). I say that this portion of ethics is well-formalized because, it turns out, if you are being reasonable about your preferences, we can represent them succinctly in a "utility function," u(A)∈R. This utility function has the neat property that for two possible options, L and M, you prefer option M over option L iff u(M)>u(L). This is the famous "von-Neumann-Morgenstern theorem" which sits at the heart of an approach of "doing good better". Now given that the utility function lives in the realm of mathematics, there is a seemingly natural strategy to use it to steer AI. Get everyone's utility functions, combine them into a target function, and then let the AI pick the actions that increase the target function the most. If we have to pick a single number to maximize, there is a case to be made that utility is one of the best single numbers we can hope for. Sounds good. Where is the catch? The futility of computing utility. Let's start by trying to write down a utility function. The proof of the von-Neumann-Morgenstern is constructive, i.e., it doesn't only guarantee the existence of a utility function, it also shows us the way to get there. Here is a step-by-step guide: 1. Write down all the possible elementary outcomes that we might want to know the utility of. Ah. Yeah. That's going to be a problem. "All the things" is a lot of things. We might (and will, in this post) limit ourselves to a toy domain to make some progress, but that will be a poor substitute for the thing we want: all the possible outcomes affecting all existing humans. We might not think of some outcomes because they appear too good to be true. (Or too weird to be thinkable.) We might even want to include those outcomes in particular, as they might be the best option that nobody realized was on the table. But if we can't think of them, we can't write them down. (Perhaps there is a way out. An essential nuance in the first step is writing down "all the possible elementary outcomes." We don't need to consider all the outcomes immediately. We only need to consider a set from which we can construct the more complicated outcomes. We need a basis of the space of possibilities. That's already infinitely easier, and we're always guaranteed to find a basis. Hopefully, we can find a basis of a system that is rich enough to describe all relevant ou...
