I'm an active 38yr young full time mom to two boys, 5 and 3. And I have an A1c problem. This isn't a new problem, so I cant blame it on my still occasionally disrupted sleep. Years before my kids my A1C was 5.7 and as a dietitian I couldn't for the life of me figure out why. At that time I lifted weights, occasionally swam, and ran 1-2x wk. I didn't eat 100% paleo, but I also didn't eat junk and I was relatively lean around 14-16% body fat. I worked with a naturopath on some hormone issues (low estrogen and progesterone from not eating enough to fuel exercise), and she never had a good answer as to why my a1c was on the high side of normal. The only factor we found was my fasting insulin was kinda low at 3. I did get my A1c down into the 4s following a keto diet, but was again not eating enough food to maintain my weight or support hormone production and lost my period. I used a CGM for a while and nothing surprising came from it other than sweet potatoes = giant spikes but pasta and white potatoes do not. Fast forward to now, I'm 5'3" 124# and guessing around 18% body fat. I started competing in Kettlebell Sport 2yr ago and I want to continue getting stronger so I can lift 16kg bells this coming year. My coach wants me to put on 3-5# of muscle. But my recent A1C once again at 5.7 has me scared to eat the 180-200g of carbs recommended by him and most fitness calculators. I'm in a hypertrophy phase for the next couple months and lifting heavy 4x wk with no real cardio. Daily food is often a high protein/fiber smoothie with about 30-40g of carb and 10+g fiber. Post workout I usually have a cup of cereal or kids cliff bar + whey protein powder. Lunch is usually a big ass salad + a piece of bread or leftovers meat and veg with rice, pasta, potato. When I track these days I do get 130-150g protein. I have a dietitian friend who has gone through Joel Greens program and she believes the issue lies in my gut and that underlying inflammation is disrupting my insulin signaling. Because we cant come up with any other ideas as to the cause. So what's a girl todo? Keto gains? Lean Gains? Jason Seib's old AltShift diet? Joel Greens 2 day core? How do I eat enough calories to support my goals of strength and maintaining my hormone levels, while simultaneously not overeating carbs. Or is 5.7 good enough? Thanks for any thoughts you might have.   Proper Supplement Absorption Angie writes:  I'm looking for solid information on vitamin and supplement absorption and best time of day to be taken. Can you shed light on this? It is one thing to know or Rx for supplement but another when and with what to take or not take with it. Great show! Thank you   What do you feed your dogs?  Jason writes: I have been a fan of y'all since I read sacred cow, currently I'm reading wired to eat.  I try to practice carnivore, but with life and kids I'm moderately successful, but overall happy with my diet choices. I'm also a veterinarian and after reading your books and thinking about our 4 legged friends, I'm trying to figure out what diets to recommend.  I have recommended canned food for cats for years because they are obligate carnivores.  Dogs are a little tougher, I feel like they would benefit from the carnivore lifestyle, but who has time to cook for their pets that much?  I barely have time to feed myself and family.  So what do the wolf's feed their dogs?   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Jason Seib is a fat loss coach, fitness and nutrition author, and speaker. He is also the creator of the Alt-Shift Diet, which doesn't have to be seen as a "diet diet" - temporary and filled with frustrating sacrifices. His philosophy aligns with previous health and fitness coaches we've had on the show, and with what has proven most successful for me. Even though Jason's work focuses primarily on 30+ moms frustrated with yo-yo diets, I've bought into his approach in a big way over the last 2 years, with great results. Recently I was looking for ways to optimize my diet and fitness pursuits, which actually means addressing some mistakes and shortcuts I have been making. I thought, who better to talk to than Jason himself? We'll start by discussing Jason's Background in the Paleo scene, the influence of Rob Wolf, serious problems with the online fitness industry, and then we'll move into the important of a healthy relationship between mind and body in fitness and diet pursuits. What is Alt-Shift: - Research, Guidelines and foundations - benefits of Cyclic Keto Diets, shortcoming of keto/low-carb diets - Macro-nutrient cycling in Alt-Shift Brett's Alt-Shift Benefits: - sustainability - leaner and stronger than maybe I've ever been - less anxiety - much better cardiovascular health - sleep, deep and consistent - energy - less illness - better metabolic flexibility - fun But Here's the Problem: Lately I've been having too much fun? I read the book in 2017, and now I retain only the essences of it, selectively. I am finding ways to cheat, while still still operating inside the macro guidelines of the diet. And while there may be no immediate consequences at my waistline (which is 30) I worry about the implications to long term health. This is an important theme in the show: a conscious approach, with self-acceptance as a foundation, but also focused on regular improvement. Please Support School Sucks We do cool things! And while some were successful at first, most women fail to maintain their weight. Well, you guys are in for a treat today. Because my guest, Jason Seib, has unlocked the real secret to fat loss. Read on to find out how to achieve fat loss for life!   Lifestyle Change   Jason Seib is an author and speaker who specializes in the Psychology of Fat Loss. Discovering his calling in his late teens, Jason Seib revealed that he was initially in a bad place around the age of 19. Because of that, he decided to have a lifestyle change and moved to a different state.    Embracing a new life in a new environment, Jason Seib’s life took a 360-degree turn when he met a person who taught him how to work out. Consequently, that triggered his fascination on what exactly makes the body lose fat. That fascination eventually led him to work with people from all walks of life.    Conventional Wisdom About Fat Loss   Jason Seib says nobody tries to figure out two sides of the equation. Women are constantly trying to change the way their body looks. They think changing how their body looks ultimately solves the problem.  But who can blame them? Modern society has influenced women to believe that they would only be more valued once they change their looks.  They think people would respond to them more favorably and differently.     “That is garbage. What happens when you lose weight is that people just notice you lost weight,” said Jason Seib. “It is wrong to think that you will be loved only if you look better.” Jason Seib also says that we are programmed to be what we are. Through his work, he helps people to understand and likewise assist them to make these changes.    The Truth Behind Fat Loss   But rather than just focusing on what constitutes a proper fat loss diet, Jason Seib chose to delve deeper into understanding the psychology of fat loss. Another reason was that he got frustrated with so many wrong notions about fat loss.    “Nobody was talking about what it takes psychologically for people to be able to make these lifestyle changes,” said Jason Seib. “No one was able to answer why it is hard to lose weight and why do we suffer from cravings.”   According to Jason Seib, most people find it hard to stay on a diet because it is too difficult to follow long-term. With all the daily responsibilities we have, it is too much of a hassle to measure everything we eat for the rest of our life.    When we find a diet plan too cumbersome, Jason Seib says that’s when we start to lose the motivation to stay on a diet. We also tend to stop the diet whenever our weight loss plateaus.   Meditation For Fat Loss   Do you know that meditation plays a big part in fat loss? Apparently, emotions affect the way we eat and what we eat. This is because men and women alike usually turn to food for comfort whenever we are stressed or emotional. “Through meditation and increasing mindfulness, we also apply levels of physical changes to our lifestyle,” explains Jason Seib. “Meditation is about being with your emotions, not stomping them out or bending them to your will.”    Jason Seib adds that having a list of rules of what to eat and exercise will be pointless if we don’t look into the psychological aspect of fat loss. Hence, Jason Seib’s meditation method focuses on breathing properly while allowing our mind to wander.    “As soon as you realize your mind is wandering, there is a moment of mindfulness when you pull it back to your breath,” said Jason Seib. Developing AltShift   Jason Seib noticed that people quickly fall off the fat loss bandwagon. Hence, he saw the need to create a diet plan that would motivate people to stick to the program. Other than focusing on food, AltShift seeks to correct the conventional wisdom about fat loss.   “I created a diet called AltShift, which is effective in losing weight,” said Jason Seib. “We figure out what kind of person succeeds in becoming a better version of themselves regardless of protocol.”   According to Jason Seib, AltShift was developed through trial and error. Initially trying it out on his wife Sheryl, he started promoting the program to other people. AltShift is actually a slow evolution of a lot of years looking at data, and the results were astonishing!   Books By Jason Seib   Aside from his AltShift podcast and webinars, Jason Seib has several books aimed to help you keep off the weight long-term. His books, AltShift – Lasting Fat Loss at Last, Body Beliefs, AltShift Lift, Altshift Dish and AltShift Food List contain a wealth of information to guide you step-by-step. Links to his books are available on his official website.   Jason Seib is the creator of the popular AltShift Diet, the author of The Paleo Coach, co-host of the popular AltShift Podcast, founder and co-owner of AltShift Fitness and Fat Loss, a successful small gym in the Portland, Oregon area.   Jason Seib speaks on the subject of fat loss regularly, delivering his Sustainable Fat Loss Seminar around the US.  His passion is guiding normal people to extraordinary levels of health and fitness.    Marrying his extensive knowledge of fitness and nutrition with his love of psychology, Jason Seib has built his career by helping thousands of people change their perspective and find a healthy, sustainable path to their goals.  Get Connected With Jason Seib:  Official Website Facebook Recommended Reading By Jason Seib How To Be Miserable  by Randy J. Here's a question- if you have a child, what would happen if you told your kid every single day that they are ugly, their legs look terrible, no one will ever love them, and they aren't good enough? Do you think your child will feel very good about themselves? This is exactly what a lot of women (some men do this too) all the time when they look in the mirror. If you don't have confidence in your own body image, how will you ever be happy, or find a way to optimize your own health? These are the questions and topics that Jason Seib has no problem discussing. In his business, he works primarily with about 90% females, and even lives in a household full of women and young girls. He gets to watch these interactions within the female mind as an outsider looking in. His goal is to create an environment for his daughters and other young girls to grow up not judging themselves so harshly, and be able to instill positive thoughts into their minds when they see themselves in the mirror. Body awareness and weight loss are big talking points in the world today. What Jason has found that in order to reach the point of sustainable weight loss, it first needs to come from confidence within yourself, and truly understanding your motivation for weight loss. If your motivation is only coming from an extrinsic factor, you will fail. We go over how to be successfull in this episode of Body Image for Women with Jason Seib! Michelle Chalfant talks to us about the many benefits of meditation, including learning to love ourselves. If you’re feeling like something is missing, lost, overwhelmed, stressed or a need to find peace, join us in building a meditation practice. Michelle guides us with a simple plan to get started. Join our 66 Day Meditation Challenge on our private FSLModern Community, absolutely FREE.   How do You Start to Love Yourself? Michelle’s model called The Adult Chair, a model that teaches people to love themselves. It’s a timeline. From 0-6 years old we live in our Child Chair where we learn feelings (sadness, happiness, etc) and needs (hugs, to hear I love you, etc.) and we learn vulnerability, passion and intimacy. Around 6-7 years old we move into the Adolescent Chair, where the ego comes in and tells us it’s separate from us. It’s based on fear and we learn about telling stories and assumptions. We live in the past and the future, not the present. We learn about control, blame and we use words like “You’re always like that” and “you’re never like this” , this is where codependency, control, narcissism, etc. comes in. We’re reactive. Around 25 years old, if we had parenting modeling to teach us how to process feelings and live authentically, we tap into our Adult Chair. But most of us have some sort of dysfunction and don’t quite know how to land in this Adult Chair. Michelle’s model is about learning to live in this Adult Chair. We learn to set boundaries, have passion, live authentically and tune into our child and adolescent to figure out what is going on and make decisions from our adult, our higher self. The model gives people a framework of where they’re at. It’s something that needs to be practiced over time and is absolutely life changing. To learn more about The Adult Chair model, download Michelle’s FREE ebook The Adult Chair: A Guide to   What are the Benefits of Meditation? Meditation helps us to slow down. The more we have to do, the more we have to slow down to get things done. It seems to not make sense, but it works. “Meditations helps us to become observers of the mind”- Michelle Chalfant   Benefits of meditation: Process things in a new way Slow down Helps us land in our Adult Chair Find peace Physical and emotional pain relief Insomnia Lower blood pressure Balance in our life   5 Minute Self Love Guided Meditation Michelle’s most popular guide meditation helps people in slowing down, bringing in light and love into the body, most people report physical and emotional pain relief, a huge sense of peace, self-love they’ve never felt before, clearing thoughts and beliefs that are not loving, and some people even cry because it’s such a contrast to how they talk to themselves.   To meditate on your own, just close your eyes and breathe. Set a timer so your ego doesn’t get scared that you’ll meditate for 3 hours, and just be. Watch your thoughts go by and just let them go. You need to practice to be an observer of your thoughts. Over time and practice (just like going to the gym), you become better at it.   Meditation can be done anywhere. Preferably sitting, because laying down people tend to fall asleep. It becomes a sacred time for people. Michelle meditates outdoors every morning. When it’s cold, she sets incense indoors and asks those around her to not interrupt. Can be done outdoors during a walk, and it’s about listening to the birds, looking at nature, and being present in that moment and taking deep breaths. Our 66 Day Challenge going on in the Private FSLModern Community. It came out of our interview with Geoff Woods about Time Blocking in order to hone in on our One Thing and create a new habit. In this episode we go into what is methylation, why it’s so important for every function of our body, why it’s gained so much more attention in recent years and how we can create a methylation balance that will help us prevent and reverse ailments such as cancer, autism, thyroid issues, autoimmunity and heart conditions. The concept of methylation is truly fascinating and this is an episode you will want to share with all your loved ones. We previously talked about methylation on the show with Dr. William Walsh.   What is methylation? The process of methylation in the body is so fundamental. It is happening all the time. A methyl group, is a carbon with 3 hydrogens. A small little player that is moving all the time, changing the metabolism. Listen in to hear Dr. Fitzgerald talk about the effects it has on our body. It’s important for fetal development and touches every bodily function.   Why is there an increasing focus on methylation in the last several years? Epigenetics is booming right now. There is a lot of research surrounding the effect of methylation on cancer, so it’s going to gain a lot of attention. If you have a condition such as cancer, autism, heart disease, thyroid issues, autoimmunity, fertility issues…having a methylation panel is probably a good idea. What can we do to achieve methylation balance? There are many things we can do on a daily basis to achieve methylation balance. We are not “stuck” with the genes we were born with. We can make changes in our lifestyle to alter our genes’ behavior. Exercise- this has a massive effect on methylation balance. It gets the liver up and running and it’s anti-aging! This doesn’t mean beat yourself up with a crazy exercise protocol. It’s about doing what is good for your body, and turning it up over time. No overdoing it. Sleep- There is more and more research coming out on this. Everything gets compromised with just a little bit of sleep deprivation. Our ability to think well and react, our health, our waistline, etc. That’s not even acute sleep deprivation. And when we get “caught up” on sleep, we don’t immediately reverse the effects of sleep deprivation. So we need to constantly manage our sleep. Stress- Nothing depletes methylation like dumping out a bunch of adrenaline. Heightened stress response. Medications- certain medications also damage methylation and inhibit methyl absorption. Acid blockers are a huge one and a large majority of Americans are taking these. We can help our acid reflux with a change in our diets. Gut Microbiome- Probiotics, specially bifida bacteria. Although, diet is our biggest and best probiotic. Nutrition- Studies show that we can reverse negative methylation when we eat right and have enough methyl nutrients in our diet. High folate rich veggies- all greens, spinach, kale, asparagus, broccoli, collard greens, turnip greens, etc. A pound of veggies a day. Beets are an absolutely healthy methyl superfood! Eggs- full of choline Seeds- sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, etc. Nuts Meat- grass fed, organic meats, B12 Beans and legumes- methyl nutrient minerals Methylation adaptogens finesse the methylation balance: flavonoids in fruits and veggies turmeric curcumin- anti-cancer green tea- potentially anti-cancer tomatoes- lycopene vitamin D- sun vitamin A To learn more and get some great recipes to balance methylation, check out Dr. Fitzgerald’s book: The Methylation Diet & Lifestyle, including an explanation of the functions of methylation in the body, description of the clinical problems surrounding methylation, comprehensive discussion of the pros and cons of supplemental methylation nutrients , how to approach methylation assessment in a more comprehensive manner, what foods provide safe forms of methylation-related nutrients, how lifestyle factors impact methylation, 7-day menu plans (one gluten- and dairy-free, one Paleo) and practitioner checklists for assessment and intervention options.  She’s offering a generous 15% discount to FSL listeners, using code FSLModern15. Check out the testimonials, and download the preface and table of contents for free! We had Jason Seib on the podcast earlier this year and his message is very similar to Dr. Fitzgerald’s. We discussed primarily fat loss with him, but his message is that you can’t achieve fat loss without having all 4 pillars of health in order: stress, sleep, exercise and nutrition. Check out the 4 part series we recorded with him to go more in depth into each pillar: Stress Management Prioritizing Your Zzzs Nutrition Exercise   Dr. Fitzgerald’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Health Journey: One pound of veggies a day. Lots of water- she drinks 1/2 her weight in ounces of clean liquids per day. Exercise the brain- engage in life’s activities that make her happy.   Dr. Fitzgerald’s Morning Routine Wake up early and easy. No stress, slow wake. This is the episode to listen to if you’re interested in taking charge of your aging journey, and learn how to improve your health as we age. Dr. Shiroko Sokitch takes us through what is at the core of helping us heal and age gracefully…the simple act of LOVE. Putting love into everything we do and learning to love ourselves will allow us to take care of ourselves properly, by listening to our bodies, and giving it the nourishment and movement it needs to take us through our aging journey seamlessly.   3 Tips to Improve Health with Age Find love within yourself. Learn more about yourself by listening to your body. Work on your spiritual and emotional development.   How to Regain or Find Love After Tragedy One simple thing….meditation. Dr. Sokitch is loving HeartMath Inner Balance Lightning. It helps you learn to achieve coherence – a synchronization between the heart, breath, and brain. It has several meditation sessions you can use to help you breath through your problems. Meditation is not difficult but it does take practice. We have discussed on the podcast with several guests in the past the benefits of meditation and how you can get started in your practice. Check out Jason Seib’s interview on Stress Management to learn more.   Tips for Maximizing ALL our Functions Through the Aging Process Dr. Sokitch has one basic philosophy for this: getting your hormones, your immune system and your nervous system in balance sets you up for good health in all other arenas. It is vital to have our hormones balanced. Here are some tips: Supplements: make sure you’re taking enough Vitamin D and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These will help with all 3 (hormones, immune and nervous) And make sure they’re high quality supplements. Listen in on the podcast to get her tips on how to tell the good ones from the bad ones. Hint: if you’re buying at a big warehouse store, they’re most likely full of additives. Eat enough good fats: walnuts, avocado, olive oil, safflower oil, avocado oil, coconut oil) Stay away from sugar and starchy carbohydrates. As we get older, we have lower tolerance for these. Get a decent amount of exercise. Never skip breakfast. Doing so lowers our cortisol levels, which affects sleep, stress, anxiety, our waistlines and plays a big role in menopause. Have breakfast within an hour of waking up. Make it high in protein and no carbs for breakfast. You will set your day up for success. Coffee?? If you wake up anxious, not hungry, hyper or have no appetite…don’t have it! Getting Real about Eating Disorders, Unhealthy Fit and Endurance with Tawnee Prazak, #34

In this week’s episode of Food, Sex & Life for the Modern Woman, Tawnee Prazak takes us through her journey of developing an eating disorder during her college years, and how she came out of that, recovering into what she has become now: a Holistic Endurance Coach. We go over the damages a woman’s body goes through when she’s an endurance athlete with the typical nutrition plan. She talks to us about getting real with the voices in our head and overcoming them, healing our bodies with functional medicine, what a healthy diet plan for women will look like to reach fat adaptation. We’ve talked a lot about functional medicine on the podcast previously. To get more in depth on the subject check out this interview:  What the ‘Bleep’ is Functional Medicine with Dr. Cole.   Functional Medicine and Endurance Sports Most of us are overtraining for what is healthy for us without the proper nutrition. It’s not just a matter of going out for a long run, and eating all our calories back with low quality foods. “We need to fuel to train, not train to fuel”   This is Tawnee’s sweet spot. Working with clients to find out exactly where their bodies are at in terms of hormone health and gut health, and making the changes necessary to still participate in endurance sports in the best health. On the podcast, she goes over some of the tests that can be ordered online to get this process started. There is so much good information in this episode, you’ll want to listen in a few times.   What is Fat Adaptation? First and foremost, this is not for someone who has not found hormonal balance or hasn’t dealt with their autoimmune symptoms. This is for someone in optimal health. In Tawnee’s words, this is the healthiest you can do for your body. It entails eating a lot of fat. And unfortunately, in the US we have been taught that fat is bad. There are evil fats out there, ie: donuts, twinkies, too much pizza, etc. And there are good fats, generally in the form of oils, ie: coconut oil. Fat adaptation is when the body uses fat for energy, rather than carbs or sugars. But we have to drastically reduce our carbohydrate and sugar intake to train the body to burn our fat instead. The bodies preferred energy source are carbs and sugars because they’re more readily available as glucose, whereas fat has to be converted into glucose in order to be burned for energy. The beauty of increasing our healthy fat intake, is that it helps us break out of carb and sugar addiction. It doesn’t mean you don’t eat carbs. It ‘s all about timing your macro nutrients and consuming quality carbs. Listen in to learn what Tawnee recommends for timing your carbs, fasted trainings, and differences between what works for men and what works best for women.     Tawnee’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Health Journey: Infrared Sauna- very meditative Walking- her aha moment Interaction with water- It’s very therapeutic. Just float and feel it. Cold thermogenesis has many benefits as well. Not the first time we hear one of our guests rave about the benefits of plain ol’ walking. She’s been involved in the endurance world for a decade, both as a competitive triathlete and also as one of today’s leading experts on endurance training, racing, nutrition, strength training and athlete wellness. Her own journey of recovering from being “fit but unhealthy” shaped her philosophy as a coach, and she now focuses on helping athletes optimize health and performance with cutting-edge and often “unconventional” techniques. She consults with athletes of all levels worldwide, and you can tune in to new podcasts on Endurance Planet twice a week. In this week’s episode of Food, Sex & Life for the Modern Woman, Nicole Jardim explains the four phases of our menstrual cycle. This episode is a must listen if you’re interested in getting in touch with your body on a hormonal level. Our hormones are not these crazy, wild emotional roller coasters out to ruin our lives. Our endocrine system and hormones are our guiding system. They react according to the current phase our body is going through and the sooner we learn to follow their guide, the better we will feel and know our bodies. Sign up to receive our newsletter, and you will also get our FREE 15-Day Fat Loss Kick Start Guide Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle Phase 1- The Bleeding Phase or Menstruation The emphasis is on this phase being the big deal, but this is actually the last part of what happens to our bodies throughout the month. Hormones are at their lowest. Jardim recommends during this phase we plan to keep our calendar clear. Energy level is at it’s lowest. Phase 2- The Follicular Phase During this period our brain tells our ovaries to start producing hormones, and starts pushing egg out of ovaries. We fell more energy, mood is better, our verbal communication is better and everything starts to take a life of its own. Testosterone is activating our libido. It is recommended during this phase that we do strenuous exercise, brainstorm, go on job interviews, give presentations, go to networking events and go on dates! Phase 3- Ovulatory Phase This is “THE BIG DEAL”. Eggs are released from the ovaries, travel down the fallopian tubes and are either fertilized and implanted in the uterus or released in next period. Estrogen is real high. We get feel good vibes, cervical fluid is changing, cervix goes up high to catch best swimming sperm. We feel confident, self image is through the roof, libido is high and we have a heightened sense of vision, smell, taste and verbal. We feel the most bold. Recommendation: ask for a raise! Phase 4- The Luteal Phase This is the last half of our cycle, will last 10-14 days long, and will determine how long our cycle will be. We start producing progesterone which is the natural calming hormone, helps control hunger, cravings, mood  and PMS symptoms. Note: stress reduced progesterone levels. Recommendation is that during this phase we take Epsom salt baths, magnesium for building progesterone, go to bed earlier and try to remain relaxed a much as possible.   One of Nicole’s biggest recommendations is that we exercise according to our menstrual cycle, and avoid strenuous exercise during our cycle and the days leading up to it. Our bodies need less strenuous exercise…not more! Hmmm….where have we heard that before?? Yes, during our interview with Jason Seib, The Four Phases of Weight Loss- Exercise!!   What Should Our Menstrual Cycle Look Like? The four phases of the menstrual cycle should last between 25 to 35 days without much fluctuation from month to month. Two or three days off is OK. If it’s not that regular, there is a hormonal imbalance.   Common Period Problems and Tips to Alleviate Them Nicole goes over the 3 most common period problems she sees with her clients: Spotting Period stops and starts Amenorrhea PCOS She also gives some tips on what may be causing them and how to alleviate them. But she recommends going in steps. From a physical standpoint: Look at food first- what can you bring into your diet that will help. Maybe you start by eating leafy greens twice a day, instead of trying to revamp your entire diet all at once. Bring in healthy fats. Eliminate refined wheat and sugar Test blood sugar levels and stabilize. From an emotional standpoint: Start with the phases of your cycle. What can you do at each phase to nourish your body and build it into your calendar.   “You have to fill your cup first, before you take care of everybody else.”   If you want more help fixing your period, try one of Nicole’s “Fix Your Period” Courses:   FIX YOUR PERIOD COURSE – TRACK I Suffering related to your menstrual cycle is unnecessary… and most definitely NOT normal. (Statistically normal perhaps, but I promise it’s not the way your body was designed.) Your symptoms point to an underlying hormonal imbalance, and they are your body’s way of trying to tell you something is wrong. This innovative program will guide you through an easy step-by-step process to treat the root cause of your symptoms, so you can regain your sanity and have normal, healthy periods again – without pills or surgery.   FIX YOUR PERIOD COURSE – TRACK 2 While PMS is a huge problem for millions of women, there are just as many who suffer from incredibly irregular periods or no periods at all. The common causes are hormonal contraceptives, excess stress, lack of nutrients or over-exercising. Think of this program as a sort of “search and rescue” team for your period! This unique program contains the most up-to-date solutions available to treat the root cause of your symptoms so you can bring it all back: a regular period, your sexy, your energy, your healthy glow and your peace of mind.   Nicole’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Hormonal Health: Get hugs everyday. You will be shocked at what you will hear in this episode. The myths and misconceptions we believe about exercise, that maybe even have us feeling in adequate or not good enough for not living up to them, will blow you away.   Listen in on Part I for our discussion on Stress Management, Part II for our discussion on Sleep, and Part III for our discussion on Nutrition, for a full protocol that will lead to loosing weight and burning belly fat. Let’s dive in to find out more about how different types of exercise (and intensity levels) work on our body. Spoiler alert: more IS NOT  better! What is AltShift Diet? It’s a diet that was created after Jason was following a paleo diet. Paleo makes people healthier, but doesn’t necessarily lead to fat loss. The AltShift Diet cycles fats, carbs and calories, and people are finding this healthy eating plan easy to follow. It is a fat loss protocol and people are achieving astonishing results. There is scientific research backing the diet protocol. The reached #1 on Fitness & Nutrition category in iTunes, and received Paleo Magazine’s Best of 2015 Award for Best Ebook. And the testimonials are amazing! Purchase Ebook Here   Four Pillars of Good Health and Fat Loss The following are the four pillars of fat loss. We have dedicating one whole episode to each, so be sure to come back over and over again, to listen in on discussion about the other pillars and continue burning fat and improving your health. Part I- Stress Part II- Sleep Part III- Nutrition Part IV- Exercise Not one is more important than the other. If one is missing, it can dismantle your goals for loosing weight, burning belly fat, and healthy living. Research Supported Misconceptions About Exercise Most people believe they need to exercise to lose weight. But exercise is only one pillar. You have to stop exercising with the intent to burn calories– Most people do this. That’s Why cardio machines are always full at the gym. The idea of working out so you can eat what you want, is wrong. You don’t make any gains at the gym. You don’t gain muscle at the gym. You don’t lose weight at the gym. You don’t lose fat at the gym. When you’re exercising at the gym and start to see results, more days at the gym and longer workouts are almost NEVER the answer. You don’t grow muscle at the gym, you grow muscle when you go home after the gym, rest and eat. You recover and your body uses the resources that you’ve given it to build stronger muscles.   Cardio is NOT the Answer The amount of calories the cardio machines tell you you’re burning are not remotely accurate because it’s impossible for a treadmill to know everything about your biochemical and hormone situation, and your thyroid levels. There is nothing you can do in cardio that you can’t undo with your very next mistake in your diet. Cardio results are negligible compared to the benefits seen with other less direct means like getting better glucose control and better metabolic flexibility and building muscle that allows a person to run more thermogenically. Weightlifting for Women Women are afraid of building muscle and bulking up like a man. Yet, most people have never seen these women unless they’re in the fitness industry. What it takes a woman to build that kind of muscle and look like that takes a lot of work, a lot of discipline, making lifestyle choices to avoid most things the rest of us do on a daily basis, and a laser sharp focus on a protocol specifically intended to get them there. It never happens by accident. And if ever you feel like you’ve gained too much muscle, just rest for a bit. Muscle is very expensive and will fall right off of you as soon as you stop maintaining it. When you have muscle mass in your body you are more thermogenic. You have better glucose control; you’re better at cleaning glucose from your bloodstream, especially post resistance exercise. “Overall your muscle is the most important measure to longevity and how healthy you are”. Jason’s Exercise Recommendations for His Clients Walk a lot daily- If you’re not walking a lot everyday, there’s no point in setting foot in the gym. The 10,000 step benchmark is a good one. But know that it will vary daily. Some days it’ll be more, some days it’ll be less. Use it as a base. Jason turns away people asking for his help if they don’t already walk daily. Lifting weights- it just takes a little bit of education. You can look for a good trainer, but it will not be easy. You can also check out Jason’s new exercise protocol, AltShift Lift. AltShift Lift is a basic resistance training protocol designed for beginner to intermediate lifters who are primarily pursuing health and fat loss goals. All you need is a bench and dumbbells…and less than 3 hours a week! Add intensity– after you’ve been working with resistance training. However, form is more important than intensity. You can check out Jason’s book and resources on his website to make sure you’re doing it correctly. Add sprinting or very short HIIT– but not until metabolic health is good and sleep is in place. Sprints for 30 seconds at max potential, then rest for 4 to 5 minutes of walking (or super easy activity, whether it’s cycling, rowing etc.) Wasting time doing cardio for more than 30 minutes makes no sense (running or biking for example). “Exercise is only supposed to make you better. You don’t have to become an exercise hobbyist.” You won’t be successful in getting the full benefits of a healthy exercise regime if you don’t take care of the other 3 pillars: stress management, sleep and nutrition. In this episode about Nutrition, Jason and Jennifer discuss diet plans for women, that will lead to loosing weight and burning belly fat. Let’s dive in to find out what a healthy eating plan is. Four Pillars of Good Health and Fat Loss The following are the four pillars of fat loss. We will be dedicating one whole episode to each, so be sure to come back the next few weeks to listen in on discussion about the other pillars. Part I- Stress Part II- Sleep Part III- Nutrition Part IV- Exercise– coming up Not one is more important than the other. If one is missing, it can dismantle your goals for loosing weight, burning belly fat, and healthy living. The Basic Things We Should Know About Nutrition Out of the 4 pillars of fat loss, nutrition is the one that most accurately needs to be done correctly. It has the biggest impact on sustainable fat loss. Jason goes into explaining what our diets should be as humans, and what the word diet has become in our culture. Jason started with a paleo diet. Although paleo has definitely led to healthy living, it has not led to fat loss. 4 Foods to Eliminate Now to Lose Fat Grains Sugar Vegetable oils: canola oil, corn oil and safflower oil Soy With the removal of grains and sugars, you will eliminate 90% of processed foods. If you eat out a lot, you are consuming large amounts of vegetable oil and soy. It’s everywhere!! These foods cause systemic inflammation, leading to a poor quality of life in our later years. Many of the ailments we encounter later in life are controlled by our diets diet, yet we blame it on genetics. Cancer, heart disease and dementia are diseases caused by inflammation. When inflammation is present in the body, it also makes it difficult for your body to lose fat.   Nutrition and Behavior Jason explains how our body reacts and behaves to our nutrition. He talks about flavor and the senses of taste, and our body’s reaction to it. It’s quite amazing the psychological and physical effects our food creates. You’ll want to listen in to get a good understanding. And to capture all the details of how our body reacts to nutrition, you’ll want to get his book, The AltShift Diet.   You won’t be successful in getting the full benefits of a good nutrition if you don’t take care of the other 3 pillars: stress management, sleep and exercise. More details on exercise in an upcoming episode. Come back in the next few weeks to listen in on it, get tips on healthy living and build self confidence. If one is missing, it can dismantle your goals for loosing weight, burning belly fat, and healthy living. The Effects of Sleep and What Happens To Our Bodies When We Don’t Get Enough Sleep Jason explains why it’s important for humans to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night, and at the same time every night. Lack of sleep results in insulin resistance which inhibits the body’s ability to lose fat. We previously had on the show Dr. Andrew Hill who mentioned that a the chronically sleep deprived brains tend to look like a head injury brain or a depressed brain. You can listen to his episode here. “Lack of sleep will make it difficult or impossible to lose fat.” Missed or broken sleep in a night will create in some people, insulin resistance similar to that seen in Type II Diabetics, and will prevent loosing weight and burning belly fat.   Typical Recommendations for Sleep Get 8 hours of sleep a night, but not 12 to 8 because it doesn’t match the body’s diurnal rhythm. 10pm to 6am is ideal. Prioritize your sleep. You have a choice to watch TV or sleep. Choose to make sleep a priority. If you have infants, lack of sleep is temporary. If you work at night, make a huge effort to get a day job. For those of us in need of “adult time”, we tend to try and find it after the kids to go bed. We stay up late, get up early, and are still tired. When we get the proper sleep, we won’t have a need for “adult time” because we will manage our time better and the kids won’t wear us out. Wow. What a statement!   9 Tips to Improve Sleep Hygiene After sunset, no electronics. The blue light in the inhibits melatonin. Wear orange lens glasses to further eliminate light blue light. Set the blue light blocker on your iPhone at a certain time. Dim the lights, use as little as possible. Use candles. Supplement with magnesium. Doc Parsley’s Sleep Remedy is a good one. Eat well. When diet is garbage, you can’t sleep well. Over training can damage sleep. Take baby steps to improve your sleep. If you go to sleep at 12, try for 11:45 and improve from there.   “Sleep Deprivation Takes Years Off Your Life”   You won’t be successful to improve sleep if you don’t take care of the other 3 pillars: stress management, nutrition and exercise. We are bringing Jason Seib of AltShift back to do a four part series of interviews to discuss the Four Pillars of Weight Loss in more detail. This is Part 1 where we focus on Stress Management. What is AltShift Diet? It’s a diet that was created after Jason lived in the Paleo world. Paleo makes people healthier, but doesn’t necessarily lead to fat loss. The AltShift Diet cycles fats, carbs and calories, and people are finding the it easy to follow. It is a fat loss protocol and people are achieving astonishing results. We will be dedicating one whole episode to each, so be sure to come back the next few weeks to listen in on discussion about the other pillars. Part I- Stress Part II- Sleep Part III- Nutrition Part IV- Exercise Not one is more important than the other. If one is missing, it can dismantle your goals.   The Effects of Stress Most of what Jason sees in his clients is based on their “heads” and the rest is on “body”. Most people believe that they don’t have stress as it relates to finances, relationships, kids, jobs, etc. But we live by an alarm clock and most of us couldn’t survive well if we lost our jobs today. These are stressors we’re not thinking about or conting on. They spike our cortisol throughout the day, which increases insulin and glucose, which then leads to storing fat. When you’re trying to lose weight, and do diet & exercise but don’t pay attention to stress, your cravings are through the roof.   How to Eliminate Stress You’ll have to know “it’s going to be difficult and will take work”. You will not be able to get rid of daily stress. What you do have control over is how you deal with it. As humans, we ruminate over things that happen throughout the day. If a car honks at you while you’re walking, you wonder why, then look at the car and remember you need to fix the transmission on yours, or maybe it’s time to get a new car, but you really can’t afford it right now and you can’t ask for a raise because your boss is not very kind or understanding, and you can’t leave because the convenience of working close to home is priceless, and you’re close to the kids school, etc….and the thoughts keep coming. Women do this more than men, by the way. What we need to do is get rational. Practice Mindfulness- Instead of  letting stressful facts and thoughts ruminate, that can lead to more negative and stressful thoughts, practice mindfulness through meditation. We’re not turning hippie and rubbing crystal here. Stay with us. Science and research shows that you can change your thoughts. Sit and take deep breathes. Focus on your breath. When your thoughts start to wander, which is normal and they will, catch yourself and focus on breathing again. You can train your mind to interrupt your thoughts and change to a new normal. It just takes practice. Do 5 minutes of meditation daily for a month. Even with no further instructions, you will see amazing results after a month. Clients have said “meditation is a game changer”. It has been proven to work and there is no need to do it for more than 10 minutes. Very doable! Jason has had clients that were finding little or very slow results in fat loss. Once they started meditating, they saw immediate results with better sleep, improved productivity at work, had more will power to avoid junk food and started losing weight. Calm, a meditation app- Jason likes this one because you can pick a background noise like waves or a stream, and reduce background noise during your meditation. He doesn’t particularly like the guided meditation it provides, prefers to do his own. The other great feature of this app is that it keeps a tally of the consecutive days you’ve meditated, providing an incentive to do it daily so you don’t break your streak. Time of day- It is best to schedule it in everyday at the same time so it becomes habitual. Whether it’s in the morning, or in the evening, as long as it’s at the same time every day. But if your schedule impedes doing it at the same time, that’s fine; it just becomes a habit when it’s done at the same time. 8 Minute Meditation Expanded: Quiet Your Mind. Change Your Life. This is a great book to get started with. It takes you through one week at a time and adds layers every week. It’s a small book of daily reading and can be done in 8 minutes. 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works–A True Story by Dan Harris. Dan Harris is a correspondent for ABC News and the co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America, and he shares his story with meditation. AltShift Diet Ebook– has a section on meditation where Jason created instructions on what to do without any confusion. Breathing Exercises- after you’ve done meditation a couple of times, you can take deep breathes wherever you are and whenever to help you center yourself. Listen to Fiction Books- they’ll help keep your mind from creating negative and stressful thoughts. Specially when driving in traffic. Figure out when and where you ruminate- and find what you can do to replace that, that won’t stress you out. Be in the moment, go for a walk, enjoy nature, etc.   You won’t be successful to eliminate stress if you don’t take care of the other 3 pillars: sleep, nutrition and exercise. More details on these pillars in upcoming episodes. Come back in the next few weeks to listen in on them. Ketogenic junk food is coming, and it threatens to send the second low-carbohydrate revolution to the same place the first one ended up. That would be a terrible shame because high-fat, low-carb, moderate protein diets have so much to offer for weight loss, metabolic syndrome, athletic and cognitive performance, possibly even cancer. What can we do? Learn to cook. Prioritise food preparation. Just eat real food. Jason is a strength coach with more than a decade of hands on experience working with clients from every walk of life. Jason has developed the Altshift program which is a marriage of his clinical experience and deep knowledge of evolutionary psychology and biology. We get pretty geeky! Talking about optimum foraging strategy, the dopamine reward pathways, but we also talk about the practical steps anyone can take to affect lifelong health and body composition (fat loss, muscle gain) changes. Standing on the shoulders of giants is what I do at Nourish Balance Thrive, and none more giant (figuratively!) than strength and conditioning coach, author and speaker Jason Seib. I’ve been listening to Jason and Sarah Fragoso’s Everyday Paleo podcast (now renamed JASSAFIT) since my earliest days eating a paleo diet, and I still find their wisdom and practical advice helpful both personally and professionally. If you head over to his website and sign up for Jason’s list, he’ll send you the instructions I’ve been using in my practice called The Fat Loss Directive. Like all good solutions, the new AltShift diet scratches a personal itch. Jason’s wife Sheryl was unable to shake off the baby fat despite eating a nutrient dense paleo diet and so Jason recommended, as always, more walking and strength training. These changes yielded some good results: greater muscle mass and strength, but unremarkable changes in Sheryl's appearance. Jason then suggested the next most logical thing: reducing carbohydrates. This change worked for a while, and then it didn't, and so they kept tweaking. They checked Sheryl was eating enough food and getting enough sleep (she was). Despite small victories, Sheryl was still stuck. The questions and answers that arose from the experimentation process would eventually lead to what I would describe as a cyclical ketogenic diet that enabled Sheryl to lose five inches in her waist in just six weeks (pictured on the right). Sheryl is not alone, and at the time of writing the AltShift Facebook group has a happy 3,929 members. Here’s the outline of this interview with Jason Seib: [0:01] Christopher’s introduction of Jason Seib, coach, podcaster, author. [1:30] How Jason’s experience as a personal trainer makes his work more credible. [2:46] What is the AltShift diet Jason has developed and why did he create it? [8:15] Why the “per day” mindset of diet planning isn’t the wisest. [11:43] The kinds of things Jason tracks with his test groups. [15:18] “New Bike Syndrome” and how it relates to weight loss diets. [20:21] Is the AltShift diet plan for everyone? [34:14] What do the terms “5 shift” and “3 shift” mean in Jason’s plan? [42:10] The difficult points in Jason’s plan for most people, and how they get past it. [47:40] Why most people need 2 to 3 passes through the AltShift cycle to begin getting it. [50:10] The tensions between scientific studies and daily practices. [56:27] Where Jason agrees with Vinnie Tortorich. [58:01] How the vast majority of people don’t even know this diet approach exists. [1:00:40] Other things Jason is working on. Jason Seib is a husband and father to three magnificent daughters. He is the author of The Paleo Coach, owner of Clackamas Physical Conditioning in Oregon, and partner on the Everyday Paleo team with Sarah Fragoso.  After his wife and 3 little girls, fitness and nutrition are unparalleled passions in his life.  He would prefer to read studies and scientific articles than do pretty much anything else that might occupy his time, with the exception of applying his knowledge to help people reach their goals.  He takes great pleasure in playing the roll of the heretic. Mainstream nutrition and fitness are so badly broken that the scientific truths about health, fitness, and weight loss are near mirror opposites of accepted “common knowledge”, and he loves helping people find those truths.  Empowering people with a much needed new perspective is how he gets his kicks, and his success rate with the frustrated fat loss crowd is proof that life is good for this fitness and nutrition geek. Today we interview Sarah Fragoso.  Sarah has led the way for women in the Paleo movement.  She is a homeschooling mom, founder of the Everyday Paleo Empire, author of 5! Bestselling Cookbooks, co-owner of Jassafit.com and JS Strength and Conditioning.  Inspiring doesn’t even begin to describe my conversation with Sarah.  I love this woman!  I know you will too.  (This photo is from when she was a guest on my TV Show, The Forum. Click through if you want more of Sarah!) Key Ideas: Part 1: A simple overview of the Paleo Lifestyle Thoughts on the power of meditation Learning when to shut it down The importance of play in a productive life Part 2: How do you make decisions? Ways to discover what’s essential in your life Expectations and decision making Website links: www.everydaypaleo.com  – This is Sarah’s home base.  You can find TONS of great recipes here along with practical suggestions for feeding yourself and your family in a nourishing way.  She is VERY real and down to earth! www.eplifefit.com – This is Sarah and Jason Seib’s nutrition and fitness online site.  They dispense tons of great advice and even have a membership site you can join. Sarah’s Resources: Everyday Paleo, by Sarah Fragoso – Her first (and I think, best) book on how to do this thing called Paleo. Everyday Paleo Family Cookbook: Real Food for Real Life, by Sarah Fragoso – Filled with over 80 easy and yummy recipes. Everyday Paleo Around the World: Italian Cuisine: Authentic Recipes Made Gluten-Free, by Sarah Fragoso – This is Sarah’s first of her series of foods from around the world.  All I can say is “I never knew cooking with mushrooms and wine would make me feel like a real cook.”  Thank you Sarah! Everyday Paleo: Thai Cuisine: Authentic Recipes Made Gluten-free, by Sarah Fragoso – And she’s done it again.  This is the second installment of her Around the World series and she took the whole family to Thailand for “research” and we are really the ones who benefit.  Interesting and yummy both. Paleo Pals: Jimmy and the Carrot Rocket Ship, by Sarah Fragoso – This is a children’s book that actually inspires kids to eat whole, nutritious foods.  My children love this book and the recipes included have all been fully approved.  I like how she inspires the kids to get in the kitchen with me to prepare meals.  This is a huge part of Sarah’s philosophy, and this book entertains as it inspires.  You and your kids both will love it! The Best Yes: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Endless Demands, by Lysa TerKeurst – Saying yes, (or no) means making a decision.  Lysa unpacks some great suggestions for how to make decisions so that your yes’s are emphatic and your no’s are freeing. You’ll love this book. Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, by Greg McKeown – An excellent resource for figuring out what is really essential in your life.  So that you make better decisions and live more of the life you really want. Sarah’s Recommendations: 8 Minute Meditation: Quiet Your Mind. Change Your Life.  A primer on meditation www.headspace.com – an easy, free App to download Encouraging Word of the Week: Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” Question:  What kind of food creates your best health?  Are you a junk foodie or a Paleo promoter?  Can you be both? (I am..hee-hee, don’t tell).  Also, how are you at making decisions?  Do you feel confident in your choices?  What keeps you from making a decision?  Is it fear, like it is for me?  I’d love to hear your thoughts. AIR DATE: June 14, 2012 at 7PM ETFEATURED EXPERTS: FEATURED TOPIC: "All Things Exercise (Exercise 101)"   Exercise is an often misunderstood aspect of a healthy lifestyle change because it can be interpreted in a variety of ways. From cardio to resistance training, high-intensity interval training and everything in between, the average person just doesn't know for sure what the heck they should be doing to maximize their results along with a healthy nutritional plan. This week we have two experts who know a thing or two about bringing the proper balance into play when it comes to exercise in Sarah Fragoso and Jason Seib from . You probably already know about the incredible Paleo success story that Sarah has from her uber-popular  blog, podcast, cookbook and children's book and she has a brand new book coming in September 2012 entitled . In case you missed it, I featured Sarah Fragoso in  in June 2011. Her EPLifeFit business partner and frequent guest contributor to her "Everyday Paleo" blog Jason Seib is a bona fide nutrition and fitness expert extraordinaire who was featured in  in 2011. Both Sarah and Jason believe that eating a real foods-based diet along with an intelligent exercise program can help you reach your personal fitness and health goals and they stand ready to answer your questions about how to make that happen! TRY THIS NEW LOW-CARB SNACK OPTION FROM NICK'S STICKS:NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE:  Here are some of the questions we addressed in this podcast: CUTZI ASKS:What kind of equipment is needed for your Everyday Paleo Lifestyle and Fitness program? I am a homeschooling mother of 4 and had a C-section three months ago. I'm still nursing and it's not easy for me to leave the house on a regular basis yet. I would love to be able to exercise at home with minimal equipment and minimal time. Any suggestions? CHRIS FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA ASKS:How would you go about altering your Paleo eating habits to increase weight loss while maintaining my workout schedule of doing CrossFit three times a week? I am kind of at a standstill lately and need some help tweaking what I'm doing. I'm not unhappy with my results but would definitely like to shed more body fat. CATHY ASKS:I am interested to know what your 'expert' thinks in terms of the differences between exercising in a keto-adapted state as opposed to 'carbing up' or simply being in a glucose burning state and how that may apply to hunger or appetite and endurance. MEG FROM THE UK ASKS:I'm a 40-year old female and have been eating low-carb for 9 months. I dropped 25 lbs in the first six months but I am now at a plateau for the past 3 months with a BMI of 28 and body fat percentage of 37. My question for you guys is what is the most effective exercise I can do to reduce my "set point"' weight and get through this stubborn plateau? PETER ASKS:I workout like a maniac 3 times per week and then usually a lighter workout at least one more time. My tough workouts are 75 minute CrossFit/MMA-type workouts with full body tempo weightlifting. I am also VERY VERY strict Paleo and have been for 3 months. I have lost 13 pounds but have been stuck at this point for 3 weeks. Should I cut down my workouts? Adjust my protein/fat? Any advice would be appreciated. I am 5-9" male now weigh 210. I look better since the weight loss and I feel outstanding. MIKE ASKS:Is it better to train in fasted or fed state and what do you recommend for pre and post workout nutrition? MACKAY ASKS:Too much exercise can add to chronic inflammation, stress, and eventually lead to burn out. How do you know when you are exercising too much? KEITH ASKS:How does low carb, even Paleo, fit into the bodybuilding equation? The sarcoplasm is where the glucose/glycogen is stored, is it not? The experience of competitive bodybuilders who go low carb and low fat during contest prep, is it that their muscles "deflate" during this period? And do they also experience more fatigue and lowered stamina which they try to time "carbing up" for the contest, so as not to be smaller. Any thoughts? MEREDITH ASKS:I have had 4 healthy pregnancies but after eating gluten/dairy/legume free Paleo! I STILL cannot lose my lower belly or develop tone in my abs. It's frustrating because I still look pregnant even though the rest of my body has awesome tone - I'm 5'4" and I weigh on average 107 lbs. It's almost as if my abs are not connected to my stomach because when I bend over the skin hangs - not aesthetically pleasing at all. I currently strength train 3 times a week and run or do sprints 3 times a week. If you have any exercise or diet advice I would appreciate it and gladly make the changes. I have also been treating my leaky gut with elimination diet protocol and take Armour 1.5 for my thyroid. I also have not had a period return after this last pregnancy. I sound like a mess but I truly do feel great except for the occasional digestive discomfort. Sleep and energy are great. I know there are other women out there struggling with their gut so thanks for your help in advance! LEE ASKS:What exercise will increase blood flow to help reduce belly and stubborn oblique fat? JOE ASKS:I'd love to know what Sarah's strength numbers look like. A lot of women are afraid to lift heavy out of fear that they will get bulky. Well, Sarah looks great and I suspect she is not afraid to lift heavy. If a woman knew she could safely lift X amount of weight without getting bulky (like Sarah), then she'd be more inclined to look into lifting weights in a healthy way. TORIE ASKS:I lost quite a bit of weight (30 kilos thereabouts) by following a low carb diet a few years back. I got to a point though, where it stalled. And stalled. And stalled. But my weight (although high) remained stable. Fast forward a few years and it's crept up by about 6 kilos. I start exercising. I cycle for an hour a day. I do the Couch to 10k running program on alternate days. I feel great, but still stalled. Then I can't exercise for a couple of months due to surgery. Back to it now, and my weight has crept up another few kilos. I am back on my bicycle for an hour a day, but not back at the gym nor running again. Yet. I eat very low carb. I'm very strict. I'm in ketosis. But I'm actually gaining weight - not even staying stable. I really didn't think this was possible on low carb. Any suggestions? The whole "measure yourself" thing isn't going to cut it - I'm still about 27 kilos from my high target, 37 kilos from my 'I really wish I weighed that!' goal. But I'm being realistic (hah!). My numbers are good. My doctor said a few months ago my cholesterol was high, so I made some adjustments and now he's very pleased I managed to lower it by fiddling my diet. I've had all the tests for thyroid etc and all appears normal according to the doctor. He's stumped as well - and just shrugs and says 'well done on the exercise'. But it's all pretty disheartening. CHRIS ASKS:1) I have heard on-and-off from various training forums that on a progressive strength training plan it takes about two years to reach one's "genetic limit" of strength. Is this true or just another example of "broscience?" 2) Can a person effectively build strength while performing very slow, H.I.T. bodyweight exercises while on a ketogenic diet? I have been doing a sort of "Body by Science"-style workout once a week for about two months with just my body weight (pull-ups, decline pushups, bulgarian squats, chair dips, planking) but I have no real way to measure how much I've progressed. SANDY ASKS:I have been pretty sedentary most of my life except for walking occasionally, gardening, no real period of extended hard exercise. How does someone start resistance training and weight lifting if they are 65 and female? I don't know where to begin and I feel lost looking at all those machines at the gym. Help! I have been eating low carb for almost one year and lost 50 lbs. BURT ASKS:What is a good motivator to get one's rear off the couch and actually exercise and is exercise important for weight loss and weight management? STEVE ASKS:This question is about exercising causing a weight loss stall. I repeated this six times and it happened every time. In 2007/8, I was recovering from years of being a hormone wreck, with thyroid, adrenal, insulin resistance, and fatigue issues. I was 315 and made it to 190 in less than a year, thanks to a good doctor. When I got about 50 lb off, I decide to speed things up by riding a bicycle a couple times a day. This was just a one-speed fun bike and I only rode it 10 minutes or so at a time. Each time, by the next day, weight went up at least 5 lb and I felt bloated in my stomach. I would stop riding and it would go back to what it was in a few days. That was hard to believe so I tired again, same thing. Over a few months, this happened six times. How can this be? I read Mark Sisson's blog post about chronic cardio and it is the only thing that makes sense. I wasn't an athlete over-training like Sisson was but could the hormone issues act like someone that over trains and gets "burnout?"
