Fresh Viewpoints: Transforming Problems into Possibilities

Encouragementology

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2024 34:43

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are freshening our viewpoint as we work to transform problems into possibilities. Problems are like puzzles, tricky but solvable. They're the hurdles that make life interesting! Possibilities, on the other hand, are the exciting paths that open up when we tackle these puzzles head-on. This show is about providing positive alternatives to some of life's little challenges. Why stay stuck if you can take an alternate path? As I've said before, it's all about perspective. Is the glass half-full or have you already enjoyed half of the concoction? Viewing a situation through the lens of possibilities can lead to a more positive and proactive approach to overcoming challenges and achieving success. So, let's flip our thinking and turn problems into fun challenges. Who knows what awesome opportunities might be waiting on the other side? I have a t-shirt that says “365 Possibilities”. I know, I know too early right? But why not approach each day by saying “What do you have in store for ME” vs “WHAT do you have in store for me”. Your internal inflection can completely alter the intent. I had an employer who gave me some seeds of wisdom early on, “Each day starts and ends with you.” That means you are in control. Doesn't that statement in itself give you some motivational fuel?  It's easy to fall into the rut of being led around by circumstance and operating on autopilot but wake up and take back the controls. Whether you fly high or swoop in for a loop and a better look, you're in the pilot seat.  With navigation on your mind, let's chart a course that has you identifying and taking advantage of all the possibilities along the way. On the last show, I mentioned The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander.  The book combines Zander's experience as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra with Stone Zander's knowledge of psychology to offer practical tools and inspiring stories to help readers shift their perspective from scarcity to abundance. The book's 12 practices are designed to help you see new possibilities and bring them to life. We're going to explore these concepts and more! At Vishnu's Virtues, I found a breakdown of the 12 Lessons from The Art of Possibility On the THNK School of Leadership's YouTube channel, I found The Art of Possibility: Interview with Benjamin & Rosamund Zander On LinkedIn, Hacking HR gives us 6 Ways to Lead (When You Are Not In Charge!) Opening your mind to get a fresh viewpoint can be an invigorating process that leads to new ideas and personal growth. Here are some ways to do that: Travel: Visiting new places exposes you to different cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. Read Widely: Books, articles, and blogs on various topics can introduce you to new ideas and ways of thinking. Talk to Diverse People: Engaging with people from different backgrounds and experiences can broaden your understanding. Practice Mindfulness: Meditation and mindfulness can help you see things more clearly and reduce mental clutter. Check out the Serenity App from Pau Bauer which helps you re-discover the "beacon of light" and stillness within you. Try New Hobbies: Learning something new, whether it's a language, instrument, or sport, can give you a fresh perspective. Challenge Your Beliefs: Question your assumptions and try to see things from different angles. Seek Feedback: Ask others for their opinions and be open to constructive criticism. Attend Workshops and Seminars: These can provide new insights and skills. Journal: Writing down your thoughts can help you process and see things in a new light. Limit Media Consumption: Sometimes, taking a break from the news and social media can help clear your mind. Practice Gratitude: Focusing on what you're thankful for can shift your mindset to a more positive and open one. Get Out in Nature: Spending time outdoors can refresh your mind and inspire new thoughts. Volunteer: Helping others can give you a different perspective on your own life. Learn from Failures: Reflecting on past mistakes can provide valuable lessons and new viewpoints. Stay Curious: Always be willing to ask questions and seek out new information. By trying out these approaches, you can gradually open your mind and gain a broader, more nuanced understanding of the world around you. CHALLENGE: See beyond the obstacles and embrace the endless opportunities life presents. By opening your mind and exploring new perspectives, you can transform challenges into gateways for growth. Take action today by engaging with diverse experiences and people, and watch your world expand in unexpected and wonderful ways. I Know YOU Can Do It!

There's no failure in business

There's no such thing as failure.Let's dive into a topic that strikes a chord with every business owner: failure. That word alone can stir up a lot of negative emotions and thoughts, but I promise you, by the end of this episode, you'll see it in a whole new light. No Such Thing as Failure, Only FeedbackOne of the core principles of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is the idea that there's no such thing as failure, only feedback. Just imagine if that became your mantra. Think about the positive impact it would have on your actions and mindset. Instead of dreading failure, you'd start to see every setback as an opportunity to learn and grow.Feedback as FeedforwardI like to think of feedback as “feedforward.”When something doesn't go as planned, it's not about dwelling on the past; it's about taking that experience and using it to inform your next decisions and actions. This episode is all about embracing that mindset shift and understanding how feedback can be a powerful tool for growth.Fixed vs. Growth MindsetYou might be familiar with Carol Dweck's work on fixed and growth mindsets. This concept plays a big role in how we perceive failure. A fixed mindset sees failure as a dead end, while a growth mindset views it as a valuable learning experience. If we can adopt a growth mindset, we can turn every failure into a stepping stone toward success.Thomas Edison's Enlightening MindsetThomas Edison famously said, “I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” The sentiment is powerful. It's about not being discouraged by setbacks but seeing them as part of the process. This mindset can transform how we approach challenges in our business.Real-Life ExamplesIn the episode, I share 2 personal examples of when I was doing something in my business that didn't quite work out the way I had expected. I could have seen those as failures but they were actually filled with valuable feedback.Changing PerspectivesChanging our perspective on failure can alter how we think, feel, and act. It's about normalising mistakes and understanding that they're part of the journey. If we're not experiencing setbacks, we might be playing it too safe and missing out on growth opportunities.4 Practical Tips for you:1. Acknowledge Disappointment: It's okay to feel disappointed when things don't go as planned. Give yourself a moment to feel it, but don't dwell on it.2. Ask, “What Do I Need to Learn?”: This primes your mind to find the lesson in the experience, helping you let go of negative emotions.3. Reflect and Journal: Writing down your thoughts can help you process them and gain clarity.4. Talk It Out: Discuss your experiences with a friend, coach, or business buddy. Sometimes, verbalising your thoughts can provide new insights.Moving ForwardI encourage you to reflect on a recent or past experience you considered a failure.- How does it feel now?- What can you learn from it?Allow yourself to shift your perspective and see the feedback as a gift. This mindset will lighten your emotional load and make the journey more enjoyable.Share Your JourneyI'd love to hear how this resonates with you and helps you move forward in your business. An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Have you ever tried to start a consistent journaling practice? Especially, if you have young kids in the house, it might feel impossible to sit down and do anything with any sort of consistency. Merle Saferstein decided to share 48 years' worth of her journaling practice – containing lessons and life experiences –  through a series of books. In this episode, Merle shares how she managed to implement a journaling ritual, even when she was a mom with young kids. She also shared the times of day she would figure out when to write, as well as the moments that prompted us as a society to start journaling. As the director of educational outreach at the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center for twenty-six years, Merle Saferstein worked closely with hundreds of Holocaust survivors helping them to pass along their Legacy of Remembrance to hundreds of thousands of students and teachers. When she retired from the Holocaust Center, she developed a course entitled Living and Leaving Your Legacy® and teaches and speaks to audiences locally, nationally, and internationally. She trains hospice staffs and volunteers showing them ways to help patients leave their legacies and works closely with the patients at the end of their lives doing sacred legacy work.  For many years, she has volunteered at a camp for children who experienced the death of a family member. Merle facilitates a writing for wellness group at Gilda's Club for women who have been impacted by cancer. She is also currently involved in Wisdom of the Century, a project that interviews individuals ninety years old and older. Merle has been facilitating a weekly journaling circle since April 2020. For fourteen years, she culled through her 359 journals taking excerpts according to approximately seventy topics. This June, Living and Leaving My Legacy, Vol. 1, a book containing eleven of these topics was released. The second volume will be published in 2023. Merle is a council member of the International Association for Journal Writing and is the author of Room 732. Her chapter on legacy journaling appears in The Great Book of Journaling: How Journal Writing Can Support a Life of Wellness, Creativity, Meaning and Purpose. Hopefully, this episode will inspire you to get started on journaling and see its benefits. There may be times when your consistency will be challenged, that's why Merle is also going to share some journal prompts to help you with your journaling. Every mom has a story to tell. And if no one writes our legacies, who else will? In this episode, you will hear: How to create a new journaling ritual as a mom with young kids When to write when you don't really have time to write and why that's important Ways your feelings can come out and astound you by writing even a “fiction” piece   Are there typical times when most people journal? How to get through negative moments to get to a positive space Using journaling to grease your writing wheel Journaling as the place to practice being vulnerable for writing that's public Insights garnered about the cycle of life/motherhood after journaling for 48 years What might your kids not want to read about if you decide to write your own legacy book? The benefits of documenting your life for self-understanding and the benefits to our kids as they grow up and became parents Is journaling everyday being selfish? 183 How To Heal from Sexual Trauma and Violence

Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2022 39:16

Episode Summary:  Latest statistics indicate that about 20% of Americans have experienced attempted or completed rape. That is over 430,000 American victims each year, 1 rape every 73 seconds. Yet only 5 out of 1,000 rapists go to jail. What has led to tolerance of sexual violence and trauma? Why is this the most underreported and under-prosecuted crime in this nation? Why are so few perpetrators held accountable? What can we do to end sexual violence, compassionately meet the needs of victims and show perpetrators that we take this crime seriously? Our guest, Lisa Saruga, is going to share how to heal from sexual trauma and violence. Quotables from the episode: Not everyone who is the victim of sexual assault is a survivor. This title is used to empower victims, but some victims carry a burden of trying to live up to that title. Do the hard work of surviving. God doesn't forget our experiences. He wants to heal us, but we have to be open to the work that healing entails. God didn't purpose for you to be abused, but he can use all things for his purpose. I have learned to trust God, his timing, and his faithfulness. He showed me in a powerful way that when we are working to chip away at walls that stand in the way of healing, we have no idea what kind of powerful work he is doing on the other side of that wall. Often justice doesn't look like we think it should, but God is just! Only 2.5% of all rapists go to jail. Sadly, in our justice system, if there is no conviction of a perpetrator, there is no protection of the victim. While God does not purpose for us to experience trauma, he can use our trauma for his purposes if we let him. Sometimes he is up to great things when we don't even sense that he remembers our trauma. I encourage victims to find a support network and talk about the experience. Hiding it away on a back shelf in our brain does not work forever. If you've been the victim of sexual assault, you first have to decide what is right for you. Some people want to report the assault, but others don't because of the resulting blaming and shaming. But definitely seek a support system to walk you through the healing process. Know that it takes hard work to be a survivor. We all experience bad things in our life. We can heal from trauma with appropriate help, but tragedy results when we don't heal from the trauma. Scripture References: Romans 8:28 (NLT) And we know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 2 Corinthians 1:4 (NLT) He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. Psalm 27:13 (NLT) Yet I am confident I will see the Lord's goodness while I am here in the land of the living. She specializes in therapy for victims of sexual violence. Her own story resulted in the reopening of her thirty-five-year cold case, when someone finally reported the identity of the man who wore a ski mask when he assaulted Lisa as a freshman in college. The man was never arrested because of archaic laws and loopholes that protect perpetrators over victims. Lisa regularly meets with legislators to advocate for laws to protect victims of sexual violence. She believes that, although God doesn't purpose for us to experience trauma, he can use every event in our lives for his purposes. Hey TTS Fam! In today's episode I'm diving into why do I keep doing this. Have you ever wondered why you keep making the same mistakes, the same decisions when it comes to certain things? These past few weeks have been very eye-opening and transformative for me. Sometimes we literally have to go to the past to move in the present moments. It's time sis that you move and release the things that people have said about you or incidents that have kept you in a place of stagnation. God is calling us for assignments and we must allow him to take us through a process of healing and transformation. Journal Writing exercise Step 1: Write the person's name and the incident if you don't remember the name write the incident. Step 2: Write down the way the incident made you feel; you can find emotion and feeling wheels on google. Step 3: Write how the incident impacted your life. Prayer for your life 1. Welcome back to the Writing Apothecary Podcast. On today's episode, we're looking at journal writing versus writing practice and we touch on the differences between them.Journal writing has always been a bit scary for me because I just didn't really like the idea of diving deeper. It's an avenue that allows us to express ourselves and understand more about who we are. Getting your thoughts down on the page is important because you can sift through the noise and explore the different things that come up and shift through them. It's like shitty first drafts, we have to get them out and then sift through them to find the gold. Journal writing is much the same. Whereas writing practice is about finding out about your writerly voice. It's about telling your stories in a creative way to explore how it works. It'll allow you to explore your writerly voice and get the hang of it.Exploring your writing practice allows your writerly voice to shine through. You then have the ability to be distinguished as readers pick up your books and have the ability to know that it's your own writerly voice and not one that isn't you. It's also a really great way on how to stretch yourself and expand on your own writing. I know that this is something that I like to do as a writer and stretching myself and your own writing only makes you a better writer. To help with this, I've listed some resources below. There's also a link to the writing prompts that I'm going to update over time. Try your hand at them. Amie: Inspired to Write, Amie's WebsiteWriting Prompts to get you StartedYou can find the latest episode on any of your podcast platforms. Emily Saunders and Marilin Rosales talk about how to manage your thoughts by journaling Emily was always considered the happy girl, the one everyone counted on for a positive vibe. On the outside, it appeared she had it together. But on the inside, Emily struggled with being her authentic self instead of the person others wanted her to be. She often felt depressed, like she was in a hole she couldn't climb out of. Eventually, she sought the advice of a psychologist who suspected her trouble might stem from a physical disorder. After tests and trips to specialists, it was determined that Emily had a treatable thyroid disease. Now, she draws on that experience to advocate the importance of mental and physical health. She wants people to know that it is okay to seek help. Emily discovered yoga, and it became the way she connected with her body and mind to bring her life in balance. She now teaches yoga to help people find their stillness, strength, and inner peace. Content trainer, business student, Marilin Rosales was in a bad home environment, turned to alcohol and drugs, and lost her sense of direction as a teenager. On the verge of dropping out of college, she decided to change her habits and prioritize her health. Challenging herself through fitness, clean eating, and volunteering, Marilyn has maintained a positive attitude and completed her business degree. Marilyn believes mental health is integral to living a healthy, balanced life. Sometimes, one small change can lead to healthy habits worth keeping. Learn more at bestlifeing.com!

How to Keep Your Self-Development on Track by Establishing a Daily Practice of Journal Writing. All personal change and development starts with self-awareness and to develop your self-awareness you have to establish a regular practice of self reflection and there is no better tool for doing that than a journal. This is the one practice that I strongly recommend to all of the executives that I coach. Time for self-reflection is sorely lacking in most of our busy work days so we have to develop the disciple to take time out and a journal is a great tool for facilitating that. Give a listen to see how it's done.

History is filled with men and women who kept a journal for a variety of reasons. Brandon and Jerry discuss how to begin a journal as part of your journey to success. What is Journaling?Journaling is essentially a process of capturing your thoughts down into written form. Some people who keep a journal do so to keep a record of their daily activities. Others use it as a means of writing out their feelings. There is no set way one must keep a journal, but we will share with you why you should, how to begin a journal, and provide some personal journal ideas.Benefits of Journal WritingWhether you are on the fence about starting a habit of journaling, or just curious for more ideas, here is a list of benefits that come from journaling. It helps you get your raw thoughts onto paper. Our minds work at a rapid pace, and life goes just as quickly it seems. When you take time to pause and write out your thoughts in the moment, you are capturing those thoughts for later reflection. You gain an outside perspective for something that was inside your head.If you ever told a joke that sounded funny when it was inside your head only to realize how bad of a joke it really was once you spoke it out loud, journaling is kind of like that. The difference is that the pendulum swings both ways. Bad ideas are recognized right away. Good ideas can be further massaged into viable ideas or products.Journaling helps facilitate reflection when you read older entries.A good journal is one you can go back to and reflect on thoughts, ideas, and seasons of your life that have passed. It may encourage you to pick up on a project that had been set aside. You may be reminded to re-establish a routine that was helpful to you in the past.A journal helps you measure how far you have progressed in life.Jerry has journal entries and blog posts from a rough financial season in his life. Reading through those entries lets him see how far he has come since that time. His appreciation for his blessings goes up after reading them. It’s probably why you se him so happy these days. He is able to celebrate his wins. Life is good. How to begin a journal writing habit that works for you.You can brainstorm ideas that help you plan for the future.A journal is a great place to plan for the future. You can envision where you want your business or career to be in five to ten years. Keeping a journal can even help you plan for that ideal vacation! Let it be a creative outlet for you where you create the future you desire in its pages.Your life’s lessons add up over time to become your first book.Write in a journal long enough and you’ll find that you have enough material to begin piecing together a book for publishing. We have friends who have written a lot of great content in their journals. They have shared some of those entries with us, so we know. The question we often ask after reading something they finally shared is, “Why haven’t you published this into a written work?!” There are people in the world who connect with you in a way that others cannot. How to Begin a JournalTips on how to begin a journal are not that difficult. It is more about building the writing habit, especially if you can make it a daily one. What we are talking about here is how to journal for success, so here are some things to get you started.Keeping a Journal Tips Determine why you want to keep a journal. What do you want to capture? Determine when you will journal. Pick a place and time you can keep a journal without being interrupted. How will you protect that space and time? Are you committed to writing regularly? Do you prefer handwritten in a notebook or typing into a program or application? Choose how often you will review what you have written. Reflection is a great gift.Listen now to episode 144 of Beyond the Rut to hear how Brandon and Jerry have established their own journaling habits.Personal Daily Journal Template

When I first started keeping a journal in 1985, I had not anticipated its profound impact. By simply recording miniature stories of my daily drama, I unknowingly conjured to life a supportive, consistent voice for the interpretations of my experience. This compassionate narrator offered me a sense of friendship with myself, which was both powerful and healing. It allowed me to […]

Joyce asked a beautiful journaling question: “How can I write in my journal in a way that I’ll enjoy re-reading my entries in years to come?” Seasoned journal-writers know that there’s a treasure chest full of good reasons to go back and re-read past journal entries. But often those gems of wisdom are hard to locate among […]

120 Eight Tools That Will Free Your Mind

The Voluntary Life

This episode provides an overview of eight tools that can free your mind and massively boost your productivity. One of the things that makes us human is our ability to extend the power of our minds with tools. The tools are only effective when combined with the right habits (repetitive behaviours). Be sure to look up and learn more about the productivity habits mentioned with each tool. 1. A Concentration Timer Your mind is not free if you are distracted and interrupted all the time. A concentration timer is a simple tool that helps your mind focus for short bursts of concentration and then give your brain rest periods. A concentration timer is just a stopwatch with an alarm. Examples include a stopwatch app or a simple kitchen timer. The habit needed to make the most of this tool is to forgo multi-tasking, take regular breaks, and protect your concentration when working by managing interruptions. To learn more about the best practice habits for using a concentration timer read about The Pomodoro Technique. 2. A Journal Writing is an amazing ability unique to humans. Getting your thoughts out of your head by writing them down gives your mind far more freedom to explore them and view them objectively. A journal can simply be a pen and paper, or a dedicated physical journal, a digital journalling app like Macjournal  or web based journalling service like 750 Words. Use a password protected journal app (or a lockable one if paper-based) to give your mind full freedom to express anything. The habit required to make the most of a journal is to maintain regular journalling every day. Read more about journalling in The Ultimate Guide to Journaling. 3. A Ubiquitous Capture Tool A ubiquitous capture tool or mobile thought and information capture tool gives you the opportunity to have potentially useful ideas anywhere but still allows you to get on with your day (and not have to remember everything).  Examples of a capture tool can be a simple pen and paper, a Hipster PDA, a note taking app like Drafts or Evernote, even the voice memo or camera feature of your phone.  Read more about capture tools in Getting Things Done by David Allen. 4. A "Stuff Funnel" A stuff funnel is a system of discrete inboxes to funnel new information into one location where it can be processed. All kinds of stuff shows up in your life (letters, emails, receipts, manuals, downloaded files etc) and clogs your mind. In order to mentally 'process' the stuff and identify what you want to do with it, you need a complete set of inboxes. Since most people have both a physical inbox and various digital inboxes (email inbox, download folder, task manager inbox  etc), you can think of the full set of your inboxes as a funnel for information coming into your life. The habit needed to make good use of this tool is to make sure you put all the stuff that comes into your life into a designated in-box that is part of your funnel and clear the funnel regularly (empty all the in-boxes). Read more about processing stuff in Getting Things Done by David Allen. 5. A Task Management Tool A task management app is a tool to organise and work with all your "to-do" items, projects, goals and other task management information. If you don't use a tool for this, these to do items remain constantly on your mind, taking up mental effort. At the simplest level, a pen and some paper can serve as a task management tool. Various software apps can also be used, such as Things, Omnifocus and Evernote. These tools are only effective when combined with the habit of organising all your project and task information in the tool and working with it daily. 6. A Reference Material Store A reference material store allows you to put information that  you might need in future in a safe place, freeing your mind to forget about it. A filing cabinet is a physical example and Evernote is a digital example. The habit needed to make use of this tool is ensuring that you put all the information you might need into your reference store.  7. A Mind Mapping Tool  Mind maps free you to be conscious of all the intuitive connections that your mind can make. They are bubble and stick diagrams of your thoughts and their connections. A mind mapping tool can be as simple as a pen and paper, or a specific application like iThoughs HD. It can take some time to develop the habit of doing mind maps and allowing yourself to make those intuitive connections, but it is well worth it. 8. A Media Queue System A media queue system is a set of tools to allow you to save media to consume later, so you can avoid being distracted when someone sends you a link. You might see an interesting article online and use a tool like instapaper to save it to read later. Similarly youtube has a watch later feature and Amazon allows you to make wish lists for things you may buy later.
