[This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription.]The Junk Drawer is back! This is a feature of my blog I intended to do regularly when I began it last year, and things just got terribly busy with the midterms. So, it's become one of my goals this year to reignite the feature. It's about odds and ends: random musings, things I'm reading and watching, stuff I found interesting, and updates on my work.Enjoy! The Ballad of the Nosey BalloonThe surveillance balloon fiasco over the past week has been embarrassing for pretty much everyone involved. Embarrassing for China in their clumsy espionage and laughable response. Embarrassing for the U.S. government in the revelation that, apparently, several of these were tracked during the Trump Administration, and Trump declined to do anything about them. Embarrassing for political media's inability to clarify the situation for Americans, instead leaning into a framing of partisan jousting.Per usual, on matters of national security, the smartest voices seem to be the peripheral of cable news. I found this Twitter thread by NatSec expert William Kim particularly insightful. If nothing else, with the successful shoot-down of the balloon by an air-to-air missile from an F-22 Raptor (the first such recorded kill by the fighter jet model), notch this as a victory in President Biden's war on inflation. Another Award Show You Probably Don't Care About But Here's Why You ShouldThe 65th Annual Grammy Awards are being broadcast this evening. Most of you probably don't care about it. I will admit that I love awards shows; from the fashion to the high drama, I find them delicious. But this year's Grammys have a particularly sharp significance. Beyoncé leads with nine nominations for her album Renaissance, an instant cultural landmark that is widely considered her most complete record. It also lifted her to 88 career nominations, tying her with husband Jay-Z for the most Grammy nominations by an artist ever. And with 28 Grammy wins under her belt already, she's the most awarded singer in the Academy's history. Here's the problem: Beyoncé rarely wins the big general awards (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year). She's been previously nominated six times for Record of the Year, winning none; five times for Song of the Year, winning once; and most glaringly, three times for Album of the Year as a lead artist and once as a featured artist, winning none. She wasn't even nominated for Best New Artist during her time with Destiny's Child or after her solo debut, which was a stunning critical and commercial success. The Grammys have always been suspect, and there's long been debate over how much critical favor is weighed against sales and certifications. What makes Beyoncé a point of considerable debate is that she's been consistently both: highly praised for her artistry and highly lucrative as an entertainer. Her Album of the Year losses have occurred in years in which she found near-universal favor among reviewers and near-universal adulation among listeners. So, which is it? That's not to say the artists to whom she lost were undeserving, but it's become a highly suspect pattern in which Beyoncé releases a beloved album that's critically and commercially successful, only to lose to a white artist whose album would not be assessed similarly, at least to that degree.Tonight, if Beyoncé doesn't win at least one of the three major awards, there's gonna be a lot of understandable chatter about misogynoir among Academy voters. What I'm Reading“The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams” by Stacy Schiff — One of the most interesting biographies I've read in a while. Schiff has a hell of a bibliography, with classics like “Vera (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov)” (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography) and “The Witches: Salem, 1692”, and her latest work on forgotten founding father Sam Adams is thoroughly fascinating. (https://bit.ly/SamAdamsBook)“Dyscalculia: A Love Story of Epic Miscalculation” by Camonghne Felix — I was lucky enough to score an advance copy of Felix' latest work, set for release this Valentine's Day. She won rave reviews for “Build Yourself a Boat” (2017), which was longlisted for the National Book Award, among other recognitions. She's one of those writers that makes me wanna write. (preorder here: https://bit.ly/PreorderDyscalculia)“Master of the Senate” by Robert A. Caro — This is the second time I've read Caro's third work in the LBJ biography quintet (the fifth part, we are told, will eventually be published when he's damn good and ready). If you want to understand how the Senate got to be so thoroughly complicated and counterproductive (to put it mildly), Caro's history of the chamber is, alone, worth reading this. It's a big one, I won't lie. You'll need to dedicate at least a few weeks to it. But the understanding you'll glean about American politics is indispensable. What I'm Watching“Fleishman Is in Trouble” (Hulu) — Adapted from the book of the same name by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (who also executive produces). It's a great miniseries. Lizzy Kaplan and Claire Danes give exceptional performances, and the writing is brilliant. It's a bit dark but in the best way.“The Last of Us” (HBO) — I'll be real with you: as much as I love Pedro Pascal, I wasn't especially motivated to start watching this. I've kinda had my fill with post-apocalyptic narratives. But then, the third episode, centered around guest actors Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, was released last weekend to rave reviews, so I finally watched it. I'm glad I did. The love story between these two men is one of the finest episodes of television I've ever seen. Absolutely brilliant. “80 for Brady” (Paramount) — Oh god, I so wanted to hate this damn movie. Metro Weekly offered to pay me to review it, and when I realized it would give me a chance to trash Tom Brady, I gladly accepted their commission. And then, must to my surprise, I quite enjoyed it. Ugh, I hate it when that happens. To read my review, click here. What I'm WritingThe week before last, I published this essay on an interview Pope Francis did with the Associated Press, in which he called for homosexuality to be decriminalized. My take is this simple: it's very good news when a global religious figure takes an LGBTQ-affirming stance, especially right now, and it should be encouraged. Last week, I wrote a satirical article about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announcing a statewide ban on Pink Floyd. I honestly thought it was a bit over-the-top and wouldn't gain much attention. I was wrong. It went super viral. It's one of the most widely-read pieces I've written for my blog, mostly because a lot of folks readily believed that DeSantis would do something like this. In fact, it gained so much traction that Snopes published an article in response, confirming that its satire. And, of course, the aforementioned review of “80 for Brady,” which you should definitely read. Where I'm Gonna Be3/2/23: “Gabrielle Blair, In Conversation with Charlotte Clymer” at D.C.'s historic Sixth & I Synagogue — When my friend Gabrielle Blair asked me to join her for a one-on-one discussion on her bestselling book “Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion,” I thought I might be dreaming. For those who aren't in D.C., Sixth & I is considered one of the premiere venues for book events. This will be my first event on the stage instead of in the audience, and I am so damn excited to talk about Gabrielle's brilliant book. (Tickets here: https://bit.ly/GabrielleBlairEvent)3/9/23: 2nd Annual Democracy Solutions Summit — RepresentWomen is hosting its second annual virtual summit on how to safeguard democracy. On its final day, I'll be moderating a fantastic panel on the Fair Representation Act. It's free! (Register: https://bit.ly/DemocracySolutionsSummit)4/28/23: 17th Annual Freedom Rising Conference — On the last day of this much beloved annual gathering organized by NYC's iconic Middle Church, I'll be participating in the segment “How Christian Fascism Made a Home Within Our Government” with Melissa Harris-Perry and Robert P. Jones. I have so much respect and admiration for Middle Church, particularly Dr. Rev. Jacqui Lewis. I'm looking forward to this. Join us! Chelsea and I continue our coverage of events and thoughts about Pride Month. Some protesters disrupted a "Drag Queen Story Hour" at a library in San Lorenzo, California. Most media articles side with the drag queen and demonize the protesters. They mostly asked parents why they brought their kids specifically to this event. The parents didn't give a cogent answer. Apparently, these protesters are possibly guilty of a "hate crime." Are "drag queens" now a protected minority class of people? We shift from drag queens and transgender people to ask the question "What is a woman?" If being a "woman" is not a part of biology, what exactly is a "woman"? The more Western culture insists on rebelling against God's created order, the more it turns the word woman into nothing more than a mask, a costume, a performance, or a meaningless identity. JOHN WATERS reads from and discusses CARSICK: JOHN WATERS HITCHHIKES ACROSS AMERICA

Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America (Farrar Strauss Giroux) Skylight Books is over the moon excited to welcome one of our favorite directors, writers and all-around cultural icons,John Waters for the launch of the paperback edition of Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America, his wild and wonderful memoir about what happened (and what might've happened) while hitchhiking across this great nation of ours. NOTE: As with all Skylight Books events, this reading is free and open to the public (first come, first served).  But because we're expecting a large crowd at this event, we'll be giving out numbered tickets to the signing line to keep things organized.  To get a ticket to the signing line, you must purchase a paperback copy of Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America here at Skylight Books.  Tickets will be available starting May 12, 2015, the official release date for the paperback version of Carsick.  They will be available in-store, or you can order on our website and leave a note in the "Order Comments" field.  We will also hold a ticket for you if you order and pay for a book over the phone.  In addition to books, John Waters will sign memorabila and will pose for photographs with individual attendees. Thank you! From acclaimed filmmaker and cult artist, John Waters, comes a cross-country hitchhiking journey with America's most beloved weirdo. John Waters is putting his life on the line. Armed with wit, a pencil-thin mustache, and a cardboard sign that reads "I'm Not Psycho," he hitchhikes across America from Baltimore to San Francisco, braving lonely roads and treacherous drivers. But who should we be more worried about, the delicate film director with genteel manners or the unsuspecting travelers transporting the Pope of Trash?  Before he leaves for this bizarre adventure, Waters fantasizes about the best and worst possible scenarios: a friendly drug dealer hands over piles of cash to finance films with no questions asked, a demolition-derby driver makes a filthy sexual request in the middle of a race, a gun-toting drunk terrorizes and holds him hostage, and a Kansas vice squad entraps and throws him in jail. So what really happens when this cult legend sticks out his thumb and faces the open road? His real-life rides include a gentle eighty-one-year-old farmer who is convinced Waters is a hobo, an indie band on tour, and the perverse filmmaker's unexpected hero: a young, sandy-haired Republican in a Corvette.  Laced with subversive humor and warm intelligence, Carsick is an unforgettable vacation with a wickedly funny companion--and a celebration of America's weird, astonishing, and generous citizenry. Praise for Carsick: “Waters idiosyncratically cuts to the core of American diversity, finding the good (and bad) in any situation with biting wit…Waters devotees take note: this is required reading.” –Publishers Weekly, starred review “Waters has made a funny engaging and—of course—occasionally outrageous book . . . All in all a cool trip and a delightful book." - Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post “Fantastical and plush . . . Carsick becomes a portrait not just of America's desolate freeway nodes — though they're brilliantly evoked — but of American fame itself.”  – NY Times Book Review   “Travel—uh, hitchhiking—book of the year?" —Ray Olson, Booklist   "A flavorful book, with the same cheeky sentimentality we experienced in Water's memoir Role Models plus a Divine-sized dose of kitsch. John Waters fans like me will be ecstatic." —Annie Coreno, Publishers Weekly “Waters gives full rein to his trash roots with fictional creations that rival anything he's ever put on screen…Waters, in short, discovers Middle America, somewhere safely between his imaginary world of trash and the glitz of high culture.” –Norman Powers, New York Journal of Books   “A good helping of unbridled lewdness is surely to be expected, and no doubt cherished, from the man known as the king of filth and the pope of trash.”—Geoff Nicholson, San Francisco Chronicle   “Waters doesn't bore us with theories as to why the open road has become so much less open; he allows his nasty nostalgic fantasies to hint at the abandon so absent from our lives.”— Michael Andor Brodeur   “Waters offers readers an outlandish glimpse into his mind in vintage Waters fashion…the book is also an homage to a lost American pastime of getting into cars with strangers.”—Justin Snow, Metro Weekly   “The book, a kind of ode to America, fits with Mr. Waters's belief that New York is no longer the creative center of the universe” M.H. Miller, New York Observer   “The novellas read like short stories that could be made into films… Funny and shocking…yet fans of the filmmaker's work will likely be more amused than shocked.”—Gary M. Kramer, Frontiers John Waters is an American filmmaker, actor, writer, and visual artist best known for his cult films, including Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, and Cecil B. DeMented. He is also the author of a memoir, Role Models. He lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

And he's as confused as we all are with many of this year's nominations. For one, Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids, asking, "...she's been nominated for pooping in a sink?" If you're in the Washington, DC area this Sunday, go watch the Oscars at Town Danceboutique with Randy, an event to support the DC Center. It's called, Glammer, Glitter & Gold. Catch Randy and the Oscar segment at the 37:50 mark. Then, we've got our very good friend Sherry Vine via Skype. We catch up with her about her upcoming big weekend: Her television variety show She's Living For This premieres on hereTV this Friday, February 24 and she celebrates her 20th anniversary as Sherry at NYC's Barracuda this Sunday, February 26. We can never get enough of our global parody queen...and we have her latest song that she recorded with the great Pandora Boxx, a parody of Madonna's Give Me All Your Love, now called, Give Me All Your Muff...of course. Sherry kicks in at the 1:10:50 mark. We also welcome Justin Luke, our Gay on the Ground in New York City, back for a second week in a row! Live from the streets of Hell's Kitchen, he chats with B Magazine publisher Peter Ian Cummings. He talks about the magazine's 18-35 year old demographic, standing up for peoples' rights to express their sexuality, how he thinks gay people are fundamentally different than straight people (it's not just who we sleep with, he says), his thoughts on the mainstream press and their coverage of the gays, his rant against smoking and drinking, and much more. It's a fun, slightly controversial conversation we think you'll dig. Justin and Peter start at the 1:26:35 mark. All that, plus all of our signature brand of pop culture & gay news commentary, including Scott & Steve's separate trips to New York City where they saw Broadway's Priscilla Queen of the Desert (see it!); Madonna's tour; Whitney's funeral; our love of actress Kristen Bell; Chris Brown & Rihanna back together; Ricky Martin's Details interview; more about NBC's Smash; and, we announce our newest Twitter winner. These Seattle-based chicks rock and they're telling the world, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" should be, "Why Ask, Who Cares," among other stuff. It's fun. Speaking of gay, do you guys know what an Eiffel Tower is? Do you like burritos? Have you ever given someone a Strawberry Shortcake? It's all dirty and we'll describe 'em. Listener beware. Not many artists have successfully bridged the divide between spirituality, house music, and the circuit scene. Mary Mary has done it a couple of times, but their output is nominal at best. In fact, Kim's songs have been remixed by some of the biggest producers in the dance industry. From Hex Hector, Thunderpuss, Tony Moran, Junior Vasquez, Mark Picchiotti and Razor ‘n' Guido, the list reads like a who's hot of any given year. Often times it may seem ironic that her spiritual songs of hope and faith would be pounding through the speakers of any gay club form A – Z, but her music has parlayed itself into some of the greatest club anthems of all-time. With hands in the air, roof-raising power, her music transcended into something much larger than even she could have possibly imagined. Nevertheless, Kim obviously found herself in a conundrum when on one hand her biggest fans were the gay community, and on the other hailing from a religious background that adheres to some of the strictest tenants of the Bible. Clearly, she had the same problem that Donna Summer ran into in the early 90s. In an interview she did with Metro Weekly she stated: "I get the loudest cheering and the love feels strongest whenever I'm in front of a gay crowd.” "I feel more free [to be myself] among a gay crowd than I do at my church." Then turns around in another interview with New York's gay Next Magazine, while speaking about homosexuality: ''I don't believe it's a lifestyle God agrees with.” Then she goes onto say that homosexuality “is not God's design; it's a personal choice.'' OUCH! The GLBT community has become the new “Jews” of the 21st century. With pending legislation in Uganda that would authorize the death penalty for gays and lesbians and anyone is known to associate with them, and when mob rules against our community in other countries like Malawi, this kind of hatred is potentially leading to another holocaust. It is shameful, if not downright despicable that in this day in age, people need to find a scapegoat for their own failings. Though I am no longer a practicing Catholic, I understand the conflictions that arise when reality confronts what you have always been taught. At some point, you need to take a stand and not allow the antiquated teachings of anonymous priestly sources dictate who you are and what you stand for. Jesus did not preach hatred, nor should anyone allow themselves to believe otherwise. As such, in the spirit of Christianity, I can forgive her misstatements and/or lack of understanding. Question is, can she accept and forgive us? Kim, we're waiting here with open arms, won't you come out to play? In these desperate times, we could sure use a healthy dose of joy. So here it is, decades worth of music that lifted our hearts and moved our bodies. From “Unspeakable Joy” to “Everyday” with everything before and after, this set reads like a soundtrack to our lives. Enjoy!
