It's an idea that's a non-starter at many organizations: collaborating with a competitor. But Yale School of Management professor Barry Nalebuff says leaders who refuse to consider teaming up with other companies—even when there are clear mutual benefits—may be leaving value on the table. In this episode, you'll learn how companies like Apple, Ford, Google, and others have analyzed and capitalized on what Nalebuff calls “co-opetition” opportunities. You'll also learn how to think strategically about which tasks work well for these collaborations and how to mitigate your organization's risk through time-tested tools like contracts, performance guarantees, and conditional penalties. Key episode topics include: strategy, negotiation strategies, competitive strategies, co-opetition, collaboration. HBR On Strategy curates the best case studies and conversations with the world's top business and management experts, to help you unlock new ways of doing business. Winning is a book written by Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, which provides insights and advice on how to succeed in business and in life. The book is divided into four sections: Underneath It All, Your Company, Your Competition, and Tying Up Loose Ends. Underneath It All: In this section, Welch emphasizes the importance of building a strong corporate culture that values honesty, integrity, and transparency. He encourages leaders to hire people with the right values, create a sense of ownership among employees, and foster an environment of continuous learning and development. Your Company: Welch emphasizes the importance of defining a clear and compelling vision for the company and setting stretch goals that challenge the organization to continually improve. He encourages leaders to embrace change, take risks, and create a sense of urgency throughout the organization. Welch also stresses the importance of empowering employees and giving them the resources they need to succeed. Your Competition: In this section, Welch encourages leaders to study their competition, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and use that knowledge to create a winning strategy. He emphasizes the importance of being customer-focused, using technology to gain a competitive advantage, and constantly looking for ways to improve. Tying Up Loose Ends: In the final section, Welch discusses the importance of managing people effectively. He encourages leaders to give honest feedback, reward top performers, and address underperformance quickly. He also stresses the importance of building a diverse and inclusive organization that values different perspectives and experiences. Here are some of the most actionable insights from the book: Hire people based on their values, not just their skills and experience. Create a culture of openness and transparency, where employees are encouraged to speak up and share their ideas. Define a clear and compelling vision for the company, and set stretch goals to challenge the organization to continually improve. Embrace change and create a sense of urgency throughout the organization. Use technology to gain a competitive advantage, and constantly look for ways to improve. Empower employees and give them the resources they need to succeed. Give honest feedback, reward top performers, and address underperformance quickly. Build a diverse and inclusive organization that values different perspectives and experiences. I'm not going to lie, when I started my business, I was super skeptical about joining LinkedIn as a business. I've since gotten into a good rhythm but this interview with Katie McKiever still reframed my perspective on how LinkedIn can be used for small businesses and entrepreneurs.   Katie McKiever has vast social media, communications, and content marketing expertise. For more than twelve years, she has specifically worked in social media marketing, previously managing social media teams for multiple multi-million dollar organizations and one multi-billion dollar organization. Now, she builds creative social media solutions for growing brands as a sought-after consultant.   She has single-handedly crafted tens of thousands of social media posts, brought tens of millions of impressions, and millions of dollars in earned media and direct business value through the content that she has created for brands' social media channels. One of the barriers I often see to entrepreneurs unlocking their next level of success and confidence is embracing sales. Don't look at it as an obligation or something you HAVE to do. That's why I've brought Ashley Frank on the show today, to share how you can step into sales with a whole new mindset; without feeling sleazy or manipulative.   For over 15 years, Ashley has partnered with innovative global technology companies, including Salesforce, Google, and Merkle, helping them build and scale growth-focused organizations. Now his focus is helping entrepreneurs and business leaders develop high-growth cultures focused on the fundamental principles of selling, taking consistent action, and building meaningful relationships rather than quick wins.   When you're going into a conversation that has the potential to end in a sale, you shouldn't be going in solely with that intent. The goal is to help and serve and each conversation is an opportunity to do that. If you go into the day thinking "I just have to make a sale today," people will feel that and pick up on it. We're also talking about when to hire someone or outsource sales, and more importantly, when not to.   * Related episodes: 181. What Problem Do You REALLY Solve? 186. Out-value Your Competition 189. On this episode of the Making Bank podcast, George Bryant talks about how to effectively build long-term relationships while marketing to customers. After enduring a lot of hardship, George entered the military at 17 and started cooking paleo meals and posting to social media, garnering a large following. From there, he launched a personal brand, a book, and now consults in what he calls “authentic marketing.” He believes relationships are stronger than algorithms and has found incredible success with this model. Listen to the episode to hear more about how your company can embrace authentic marketing, as well as incorporate the 7 successful principles of any business.   Listen to Josh and George discuss authentic marketing: George's Journey (3:07) After a traumatic childhood, George entered the military at 17, where he suffered physical and mental injuries. In order to learn to cook, he started making paleo meals and posting them online, eventually garnering a large audience. Since then, he has been an influencer, author, photographer, and business owner.  Authentic Marketing (11:13) George discusses how he defines marketing and how his approaches it. To him, relationships beat algorithms. If you feel you have a marketing problem, you probably have a relationship problem—with yourself, your people, or your customers. He delves into how impactful relationships and people can be. If you can build connections and trigger word-of-mouth marketing, you will see endless customer loyalty and growth. Cart Abandonment (19:25) We've all put items in a cart but haven't bought them. George talks about the difference in marketing strategies between reminding your customer of their items and offering them a gift instead. He breaks down how these two interactions impact the customer differently and illicit different responses.   Out-care Your Competition (24:10) George chats about how he converts cart abandoners into customers. He uses their questions and incorporates it into FAQs and other content. Additionally, he talks about how by showing care and treating your customers with respect, you will outpace your competition. Applying Digital Marketing to Real Life (27:11) George explains how absurd digital marketing has become. If we apply digital marketing strategies to real life, we as a culture would never allow them. So why are we doing them online? This disconnect makes for ineffective and efficient marketing. However, George believes that the best marketing goes beyond just the initial touch point. If you can appreciate connections and relationships with others, your marketing will take you much farther than simply berating someone to buy something. 7 Principles (31:41) There are 7 principles that if a company just follows a few of them, they will be set for life. He outlines them as: listen to what the customer wants, learn or serve in everything you do, build long-term relationships, have two-way conversations not one-way lectures, leave no one behind, make it personal if it can be, and remember that everyone matters whether they give you their credit card or not. Delivering the Digital Restaurant teaches how to build a successful digital restaurant business that will survive and thrive into the future. Authors Meredith Sandland (@meresandland) and Carl Orsbourn (@carlorsbourn) were guests on the Digital Hospitality podcast to discuss what they learned while writing their must-read restaurant business book, Delivering the Digital Restaurant Your Roadmap to the Future of Food. ➤ ORDER THE BOOK: https://www.deliveringthedigitalrestaurant.com Three Takeaways From This Podcast Episode: https://youtu.be/Wgqlw9npU28   1. Monthly Services Make Daily Differences – There was a time when only corporate companies could afford access to digital innovations that optimized orders or operations. That time has passed. Regardless of your size or scale, consider implementing software or systems that might come with a monthly fee but will change your business for the better day after day.   2. Your Competition is Your Community – We are all in this together. By having conversations with the restaurants in your community and discussing trends in your industry, you can create a better food landscape for your city or neighborhood as a whole.   3. There's No Such Thing as Throwaway Content – With all the research that went into writing a book, Carl and Meredith still had 90 percent of their conversations scrapped from the final copy that hit Amazon. So, did they just discard it? Of course not! They will continue to share untold stories through their social platforms as should you.   When Carl Orsbourn and Meredith Sandland began writing their book, Delivering the Digital Restaurant: Your Road Map to the Future of Food, they didn't know how they'd finish it, but they knew why they had to. “Our 'why' is really about helping restaurants navigate this digital change,” beams Meredith Sandland on the Digital Hospitality podcast. “We are incredibly passionate about the magnitude of this change and want to see everyone successfully get through it and thrive because they have figured out how to master it.” As alluded, that change is seeing restaurants of every size, shape and scale embrace evolving technology to better serve their customer base and grow their business. For years, both Meredith Sandland and Carl Orsbourn have worked in different ends of the food industry, expanding brands such as Taco Bell and British Petroleum to a new world with new customers. “I was seeing the enormous level of change of better quality food in the gas station environment,” reflects Carl Orsbourn. “There's so much change happening, so many exciting things that really are only at the front of where I think this industry is going.” Meeting at ghost kitchen company Kitchen United, the co-workers turned co-authors were already on the cutting edge of where the food industry was headed in the 2020s. After years of working for big brands and joining forces at a start-up, both could see that change was imminent. However, no one knew just how much 2020 would expedite this dramatic digital shift. “Everything that's happening is really an existential crisis for the restaurant industry,” Meredith Sandland shares. “We started the book back before the pandemic when we thought this would all take three to five years to play out. Of course, the pandemic accelerated all of that and laid bare the digital divide.”   Digital Restaurants: Because of the rapid change the restaurant industry faced due to the Coronavirus pandemic, restaurants either adapted or closed during the tough and evolving times. Even for those businesses that are still standing, it's essential that they learn through their competition and peers to best adjust their strategy and tools for the good of the communities they serve. “It is critical to figure this out together,” notes Meredith. “When I think in particular of our local independent restaurants, the ones that are the fabric of our community that make ...

After leaving active duty in 2011 as a U.S. Army veteran and Apache helicopter commander, Socrates turned to cannabis to re-acclimate to civilian life. Because cannabis wasn’t legal at the time in Massachusetts, where he lived, he was forced to rely on the black market, where he couldn’t be sure about the quality of the cannabis he was buying. The frustration of that experience, coupled with the lack of access to cannabis for his fellow vets, led Socrates to co-found Jane Technologies with his brother Abraham.Jane launched in 2017 to provide an e-commerce solution for legal cannabis retailers. A big part of the platform is that customers can conveniently research and purchase cannabis products online. Mortgage Banker In Awe Of Power Of Books Sets Up Publishing Company

The Published Author Podcast

David Hancock walked away from mortgage banking and a massive salary after directly experiencing the power of a book on business growth.  David's passion shifted when he realized he wanted to help other people with the same secret weapon that Jay Conrad Levinson gave him in the late ‘90s. Jay, author of Guerilla Marketing, explained to David during coaching sessions that to win big clients and be in demand, he needed to write a book.   With said book written to help other mortgage bankers, David achieved massive success in mortgage banking. He was finally in demand with affluent clients.   TOP TAKEAWAY: A BOOK WILL GIVE YOU AUTHORITY AND MAKE YOU IN-DEMAND  David recalls that after writing his first book, amazing things began to happen. Less than a year later he doubled his fees and his income “all because of the power of the book.  “I was a recognized authority in the space. I didn't necessarily feel like the authority in this space. But the book gave me that authority. And sure enough, people who would never give me the time of day were begging to get on my calendar just as he predicted.”  The media began to call David on a regular basis, and at the height of the book's success he was interviewed weekly.  He then co-authored a book with Jay Conrad Levinson himself, Guerrilla Marketing for Mortgage Brokers: How to Steal Customers from Your Competition.  Meanwhile, David had experienced a taste of the power of a book, and the allure of mortgage banking began to fade. He was falling in love with the way books could transform a business, and with helping others on the same book writing journey. “It was very fulfilling and I ended up going all in.”  Going all in meant that David actually set up his own publishing company, Morgan James Publishing, in the early 2000s. He and his wife began working with entrepreneurs and business execs, getting them published without the pain points that accompanied traditional publishers.  CHOOSE YOUR PUBLISHING MODEL CAREFULLY  The phenomenal success of David's first book was wonderful and awful at the same time. David didn't enjoy the lack of control with a traditional publisher, and so with Morgan James he decided to create a hybrid publishing company that involves authors closely.    Even though Morgan James is a hybrid publisher, it's unlike other hybrids and has some unique aspects to its approach. For example, entrepreneur-authors are paid a small advance, but have to buy some of their books at wholesale prices. Authors need to be open to being cowshed and best practices around promotion and selling, as well.   In this episode, David goes over the pros and cons of various publishing models. He notes that while self-publishing may at first glance appear to be the most lucrative option for most entrepreneur-authors, this isn't necessarily the case. It's important to explore all the services a traditional or hybrid publisher can offer that bring in additional revenue. These include book store distribution, multiple e-book platforms, and foreign publishing options.   After 17 years in business, Morgan James is a respected publisher, having published more than 3000 books. It regularly releases around 200 books a year. Most are by entrepreneurs. The business has a small faith book division, and publishes a small number of fiction books each year.  Their very first bestseller was by Brendon Burchard, author of The Millionaire Messenger. Since then, Morgan James has been on the New York Times bestseller list about 29 times, and on USA Today's bestseller list more than 65 times. Last year alone they hit the Wall Street Journal's bestseller list 14 times!  “It's really exciting to see even in tough times how well the authors are doing with their books, and what a privilege it is to play in that space with him,” enthuses David.  Links    Twitter  LinkedIn  Instagram  MorganJamesPublishing.com  SUBSCRIBE TO PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe. Making Your Brand Stand Out from Your Competition When you are running your business, you will find that there will be a lot of other businesses providing the same services as you. This leads to a fierce competition as you’ll all be fighting to secure customers. The good news is that there some great ways that you can make your brand stand out from your competition from providing new products and services to trying new marketing strategies and more. Find out some of our tips in the article below. Study your Competitors One of the first ways that you can make your brand stand out from your competition is by making sure you have a look at your competitors and find out exactly what they are up to. When you do this, you can see what is working for them and what isn’t. Found something that they don’t offer? Use this information to make your brand shine. Promote Your USP If you have a look at your business competitors and notice that they all focus more on certain products and services then, you should have a look and see if there is anything that could be seen as your USP. You’ll want to promote this as best as you can to make your brand stand out. When it comes to promoting your services you will need to make sure you utilise Social media so you can create ads and use social media to push and promote your services. Make Your Prices Reasonable The next thing that you should do if you want your brand to stand out from the competition is to make sure you make your prices reasonable. If you make your prices affordable and reasonable then, you will find that more people will be inclined to use your services over others. Make sure not to drop your prices too low, of course, as this can affect your profit. Introduce Employee Benefits Raise Brand Ambassadors If you are wanting your business to be successful and stand out from others then, you will need your employees to do as much work as possible to take on new tasks and clients. To get your employees motivated to do more, you should consider introducing employee benefits to your team. Consider using an employee benefits platform in order to provide tailored benefits to your employees. You can also motivate them by hosting team days and setting goals in order to make your brand one that matters. See the benefits and roles of brand ambassadors. Follow Your Own Ideas To make your brand stand out and not look the same as your competition, it is important that you try and stick to your own ideas instead of copying others. This is because it will make your brand look different from the others in your industry. It will also be a lot more personal to you as it will be all your own creative ideas and not from others. Put a face on your company and use this to get some customers on board. Be different at all Cost Overall, there are a lot of different brands out there that you will need to compete with and you need to make sure that you stand out. Brand awareness is one of the key things you’ll need to focus on so don’t forget to put some strategies in place from the get-go. Do some competitor research and motivate your staff if you want to beat the competition and make your brand stand out.  Hopefully, all of our tips will help you to achieve that. Trust or Conversion? How Content Marketing Builds Both Brand and Sales

Content strategy for B2B brands has two primary functions: to build trust and then develop that trust into working business relationships that benefit everyone involved. So how do you think about content strategy in order to set yourself up for building trust, and then converting? Let's talk about that. Before we get going, I want to point out that, during changing times, we need to rest upon a firm foundation of values, no matter what's going on in the world. For this reason, we're focusing on the fundamentals: building trust through coherent branding and then developing that trust through a series of communications, via an email-based content strategy. Why Email? Right off the bat, email should be at the core of most content strategies. Here's why: You own your list. Unlike your Facebook page or Youtube account, you own your list, and it doesn't belong to anyone else. Email delivers the best analytics. You can know exactly who opened and clicked through, which is not something web analytics offers. It's a media channel. It's like creating your own magazine you get to advertise in, but you control all editorial content and put the "ads" where you want. Email allows you to measure and understand what your customer is doing at the individual level. In other words, where your website analytics only shows anonymized summary data, email shows you an email address and a name, including how they interacted with your content every month. If email is at the core of your inbound marketing mix, measuring all your returning customers and their interactions (perhaps together with your CRM), you now have the best data on those most valuable relationships (in other words, people who want to hear from you and who have said they want to hear from you). Gaining Trust with Content Trust gives you repeat customers and higher-value customers. In other words, better relationships. People who aren't trustworthy have to lower their prices. But if your customer likes and trusts you more than anyone else, you win and they win. Here are a few possible problems you might be solving by gaining trust. Your Competition is Untrustworthy You could find that building trust is especially important if: You are surrounded by competitors who are transactional – who see people as dollar signs and don't really care about having a relationship or building trust with your audience. And there is value in creating such a relationship – return customers are less costly to acquire and more fun to work with. If people are starved for trust, you could be the breath of fresh air they want. You're Post-Merger You can use email powerfully to build trust and engage your customers and other stakeholders after a merger or acquisition. Email gives you a chance to talk about the merger, even go into detail, and to address objections without rigid time constraints. In other words, you can talk to the people who said they want to hear from you and send them information to keep them in the loop. Because in a merger or acquisition, the last thing you want is for people to misunderstand. But if you're sharing information about everything you're doing, telling them what to think about it and why you're doing it, then your intentions become clear and believable. You're Entering a New Market A content marketing campaign is especially valuable when you're new to the market and people don't know you yet. They don't know what to think about you, they don't know your approach to business, and they don't know your character. A gradually growing email newsletter is a great way to help them to know how you think. You're Innovating Leaders in innovation are by nature teachers. They share their vision and paint a picture of the future. Even if you're just solving a problem in an innovative way, people need to understand how it works. If it's a service, they may need to understand a new workflow.

HOW TO RESPOND TO “YOUR COMPETITION COSTS LESS THAN YOU” Clients and prospects will frequently say things like: -You COST too much. -Your fees are too high. -Your COMPETITION costs less than you. Where many go wrong is by improvising a response instead of following a DISCIPLINED PROCESS for handling objections. Most of the time a cost objection is actually a VALUE PERCEPTION PROBLEM. The cost is NEVER AN ISSUE when perceived VALUE is CLEAR and desired. There is a strategic decision you can make to set yourself apart so you don’t have to get stuck in a cost/price competition. WATCH the video to learn what your COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE is and how you can simply and easily reposition “low cost” as a drawback rather than a benefit. ….. Eat Their Lunch: Winning Customers Away from Your Competition by Anthony Iannarino Click here to view the show notes! https://www.salesartillery.com/marketing-book-podcast/eat-their-lunch-anthony-iannarino The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition, from the author of The Only Sales Guide You'll Ever Need and The Lost Art of Closing. Like it or not, sales is often a zero-sum game: Your win is someone else's loss. Most salespeople work in mature, overcrowded industries, your offerings perceived (often unfairly) as commodities. Growth requires taking market share from your competitors, while they try to do the same to you. How else can you grow 12 percent a year in an industry that's only growing by 3 percent? It's not easy for any salesperson to execute a competitive displacement--or, in other words, "eat their lunch." You might think this requires a bloodthirsty "whatever it takes" attitude, but that's the opposite of what works. If you act like a Mafia don, you only make yourself difficult to trust and impossible to see as a long-term partner. Instead, this book shows you how to find and maintain a long-term competitive advantage by taking steps like: * ranking prospective new clients not by their size or convenience to you, but by who stands to gain the most from your solution. * understanding the different priorities for everyone in your prospect's organization, from the CEO to the accountants, and addressing their various concerns. * developing a systematic contact plan for all those different stakeholders so you can win over the right people at the organization in the optimal sequence. Your competitors may be tough, but with the strategies you'll discover in this book, you'll soon be eating their lunch.

On Tuesday, November 6th, I am releasing my third book in three years. If you read this newsletter each week (or even most weeks), you know the book is titled “Eat Their Lunch: Winning Customers Away from Your Competition.” It’s a book about competitive displacement, or put more directly, “stealing your dream clients from your competition.” Eat Their Lunch is a book about living, thriving, and surviving in the red ocean, where there is fierce competition, where clients want to commoditize what you sell, and where you are necessarily a large part of the value proposition (and in many cases, the largest). When someone writes a book, they have something they absolutely must share, some question they must answer, some problem they need to solve, or some complicated knot they are attempting to unravel. When you think about sales, there aren’t too many things more difficult than taking your dream client away from a competitor they believe is satisfying their needs. It’s not that they don’t have a compelling reason to change, but rather they don’t think they have a compelling reason to change. Unless and until you help them believe they need to do something different, you are not going to have an opportunity to win your dream client away. You also can’t wait to win your dream clients. In the past, it was customary to wait patiently for your dream client to become dissatisfied enough to let an RFP or rummage through a box business cards to invite different companies in to present to them. This behavior, waiting passively and being reactive, is how you become a commodity. Here’s the terrible truth about commoditization: If you act like a commodity, your dream client will treat you accordingly. The right approach for both of these problems is to get on your front foot, to be proactive, to dictate the tempo, to control the narrative. Is Eat Their Lunch for You? When you write a book proposal, you are supposed to include a section to describe the audience for your book to the publisher. The wrong answer is “everyone.” The right answer is a small niche that is large enough to publish a book profitably. It's Not For You If . . . If you want to know how to speak poorly about your competitor, this book is not for you. I offer the opposite advice. The best way to “eat their lunch” is to say nice things about your competitor and then differentiate yourself and your approach. If you want tricks and shortcuts that will provide you with a result without any effort on your part, I am afraid I am going to disappoint you. Eat Their Lunch is practical and tactical, and the frameworks require disciplined effort on your part. It's For You, For Sure However, if you are the kind of person who wants to know how to create so much greater value than their competitors that their dream clients will switch providers, Eat Their Lunch will show you how to do so. If you want to make ideas like Challenger and selling with insights actionable, the chapter on capturing mind share will provide you with a framework and exercises that will allow you to do so. Prospecting isn’t an event. Prospecting is now a campaign, where you professional persist and pursue your dream client over time. If you want to know how to professionally persist effectively and use your greater value creation to capture mind share and gain appointments with your dream clients, you’ll find the strategy in Eat Their Lunch. For me, discovery is now about helping the client discover something about themselves. If you want the newest and sharpest lens for understanding your client’s real challenges, Eat Their Lunch will stretch you, and in doing so, give you a much clearer view, one that opens up opportunities and creates an advantage. It will help you see what is invisible to your competitor. You know how there seem to be more people involved in every deal and how it is getting more difficult to manage this process? If you want a framework for understanding who these people a...

Ep 57: Standing Out From Your Competition With Your Unique Selling Proposition

Christy Wright Podcast Channel

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2018 64:47

One of my favorite things about business is marketing, and I’m so excited because this week we’re diving into a marketing concept known as the unique selling proposition. What is a Unique Selling Proposition? It is one feature or benefit you want to highlight about your product or service. This concept dates back to the 1940s and was used to get people to switch from one brand to another. For examples of this, just Google “1940s soap advertisements,” and you’ll see some brands touting “lovelier skin” and others promising to “stop BO!” Don’t most soaps do both? Yes, but each brand chose to highlight a different feature of its soap. I’ve taught y’all about this before in many places, including my Business Boutique book, where I call it your unique position. It’s the angle you want to take in all of your marketing that lets your customers know why they need to buy from you. In Reality in Advertising, author Rosser Reeves explains the purpose of your unique selling proposition so well. He says, “Each advertisement must say to each reader: ‘Buy this product, for this specific benefit.’” He also says, “The proposition must be strong enough to move the masses.” Related: Ep. 52—Market Research: How to Know What Your Customers Want So focus on just one feature or benefit of your product—something you want to be known for that is strong enough to move the masses—and highlight that in all your marketing, even if that thing seems obvious. In fact, in this episode, I’ll tell you how my college professor taught our class how to sell a toaster by highlighting a feature as basic as its electric cord. But here’s another example. FedEx has an advertising campaign right now that grabs my attention every time I see the commercial. In the ad, you see a woman standing in her art studio waiting on a delivery. In another scene, a package is hand-delivered to an elderly man sitting in a nursing home cafeteria. Then there’s a little boy peering with wonder at a FedEx box in his living room. A voice-over asks, “What’s inside?” Then you see the artist, the senior and the little boy light up as they open their boxes—and the answer comes: “Possibilities.” Here FedEx reminds us that receiving a package in the mail is exciting! And if they’ve done their job right, maybe they’ve even convinced you that when you send or receive a parcel via FedEx, anything is possible. Doesn’t UPS offer a very similar service? Yep. If you use UPS for your shipping and handling, can you send and receive the same things and have it done in the same amount of time? Probably. But FedEx hooked me with their commercial because they chose to highlight the excitement that comes with anticipating a package. What result can you highlight about your business that will make your potential customers feel something? In this episode, I’ll challenge you to answer these questions about your business: What makes your product unique? What makes your services unique? Why should someone buy from you instead of your competition? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you’re missing out on sales. You’re missing sales because if you don’t answer these questions in your marketing, your customers sure won’t know the answers, either! Claiming Your Unique Value Proposition Now, your unique selling proposition doesn’t have to be something unique to only you—in fact, it probably won’t be. My guest this week understands that and has marketed her business brilliantly. Megan Tamte is the co-founder and co-CEO of Evereve, a retail fashion and styling company and one of my favorite stores. Evereve’s tagline is “Dress like a mom.” Just think about that for a minute. How many stores and boutiques and online clothing companies sell clothes for women? How many sell for moms, specifically? There are probably thousands or even millions, right? But Megan chose to claim it. Her marketing lets people know that her store is the store that dresses moms. And as a result, Megan has grown Evereve into a multimillion-dollar business! In this episode, Megan and I talk about: How she came to the idea of claiming her unique position in her market How you can find an angle for your business and use it to your advantage How you can pursue the dream of being a good, Christian mom and a working woman How you can break free from the labels and limitations women put on themselves Megan addresses the tension so many of us feel between being present for our kids but also pursuing a business dream. I love her perspective on this: “One of the best gifts I could give my children was not being a mom who’s lying on the couch at night watching other peoples’ dreams come true but being a mom who was alive and passionate and happy.” Amen, sister! Answering Your Business Questions Like, “How Much Should I Pay Myself?” Y’all know one of my favorite parts of this podcast is hearing directly from you. So this week, I’m answering your business questions about money and social media. Don’t forget to give me a call on my new toll-free line at 844.944.1074. Episode 6 – Standing Out from Your Competition in Your Local Small Business   Welcome back to the Local Small Business Coach Podcast, I am your coach Tammy Adams. This is episode 6 and today we are going to discuss how to stand out from your competitors.   But before we dive in, I want to take a moment to discuss something that I saw on the Profit last night that really stood out based off our last couple of episodes.   If you aren’t watching the Profit, you need to. This is probably one of the best TV shows every local small business owner needs to watch.  Marcus Lemonis, the amazing businessman behind the show, invests in local business to help not only turn them around, but to develop a brand that he can take national.   His main mantra is something I’ve always been preaching, just using different words and that is People, Process and Product. He gives mini business lessons to the audience and as a small business owner, you can learn so much.   The main reason I bring this up is, in last night’s episode Marcus asked the small business owner, who had 5 soup shops by the way, what his gross margin was. This owner looked right at him and had no idea.   This really stood out to me since we just got through talking about this last week how you need to know your gross margin. Here is Marcus and one of his key questions was this very thing and then he goes on to share how if this man gets his gross margins up he would add over a million in sales and $300,000 in profit from this one thing.   It really drove home how important this is.  So if you aren’t watching, please go back and watch all the episodes. Maybe we will dive in more in a future episode.   But let’s dive into today’s topic – Standing out from your competitors.   I picked this topic to follow our last episode’s discussion on our Ego getting in the way on purpose.   Our Ego really goes crazy when it comes to our competitors.  Often times we beat our chest that we are so much better than they are, that we miss what they are doing well.   I actually have a great learning lesson I had on this back in my Depot days.  Since I had been with them from the 64th store, we were a very fired up group. We were growing so fast and kicking butt and our ego was huge. We dominated our competition and the love affair American had with us was pretty amazing.   As we expanded into the Western states, which is what I was a part of, we just took over a state at a time.  We had no problem being obnoxious and cocky. Then a strange thing happened, we went into Washington up against a pretty popular big box retailer similar to us. No matter what we did, these guys kept getting strong and going head to head with us.   It kind of through us for a loop since we felt we were so much better than they were. But the customer was telling us something different. Long story short, when we finally stopped beating our own chests and started to listen to the customer and how they were voting with their dollar we learned a valuable lesson. It led to use making a huge change that impacted a large chunk of our business. Those of you that shopped us 15 years ago saw us transition from a huge contractor focus to one that was both a contractor business and a home décor business. This was huge for us and a great move. It all came from us just listening to what the customers were telling us we needed to do to grow our business and meet the needs they were looking for.   I tell you this story as it is just as important to each local small business owner as it was to this big box retailer.   For each of you, there are others in your community that are also doing either a similar business as you are or they are offering maybe 1 or 2 similar services.  Your goal is to find out what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. What are the opportunities that you can be taking advantage of?   How can you stand out from your competitors?   For the full show notes click the link below!   HELPFUL LINKS Podcast Website:    LocalSmallBusinessCoach.com Leave your Message on the website with the SpeakPipe Button or just email me atTammy@LocalSmallBusinessCoach.com Episode Show Notes:  Episode 6 - Local Small Business Coach Podcast Our Training Materials for Local Small Business Owners:  TrainingforLocalSmallBusinessOwners.com Starting a Local Small Business Website:  StartALocalSmallBusiness.com

Has a setback in life forced you to get creative? Have you ever found yourself wondering what would happen if you transformed a creative knack into a business? That’s Katy’s story. She took a challenging time in life and made the most of it, and her dedication has paid off. Katy has also created a unique technique for turning her handmade drawings and art into digital masterpieces that she can print or sell digitally over and over again. Tune in to hear her unique technique, and great advice on the pros and cons of digital versus print work for artists and creatives. Katy decided to start a stationery shop on Etsy, selling notecards and thank you notes. She named her shop ‘Little Red Flag’ after the red flags on mailboxes. So Cute! But it turns out, stationery wasn’t quite the best fit. Katy did end up finding a full-time job, and shortly after getting hired found out she was expecting her first son. Wanting to decorate his room in a unique and meaningful way, Katy decided to design prints to fit with her transportation nursery theme. A few friends suggested she sell the products so, using her already-created Etsy shop, she listed a few to see what happened. The rest is history! Katy’s Unique Process Katy’s process for creating her products is very unique. Since her shop does have a strong emphasis on nursery prints, Katy keeps herself up to date with current trends in nursery and home decor. Then, she’ll pick an idea that resonates and start sketching or handlettering on paper. Katy then uses an ink pen or Sharpie to trace her sketches (in order to darken the lines), then scans the image to her computer and imports it into Adobe Illustrator. Using the ‘Live Trace’ function in Illustrator, Katy creates a vector image of the outline. Normally, a bit of cleanup work around the edges will be required. To put the finishing touches on her designs, Katy creates various overlays and adds vintage detail. Hand Drawn Digital Prints All digital prints from Little Red Flag begin as a physical drawing, which sets Katy's work apart. Katy considers herself a self-taught designer. While being self-taught may be considered a weakness by some, Katy sees it as a distinct strength. In 8 years of learning as she goes, Katy has developed a style all her own that is impossible to duplicate. She has taken hand lettering and other classes over the years, applying her body of knowledge to each new product. Creative, Passive Income Katy’s method of transferring handmade art into digital files for sale is a brilliant way for artists to make a passive income from their products. As part of her business model, Katy does want to experiment with creating custom-drawn clip-art elements that customers can download. She would sell packs of various elements so others could form their own creations, using her designs as a base. Digital items are fabulous additions to any Etsy shop, as they are virtually maintenance free. As a busy mom of three, Katy loves seeing a digital order sale notification come through the Etsy app, knowing she doesn’t need to do anything else to process that order! Managing Digital Sales Little Red Flag sells both digital downloads and physical prints. At first, Katy liked having oversight of her prints from ideation to finished product. She decided to test the waters with digital prints when some customers wanted a particular print very quickly. Not being able to guarantee delivery by this customer’s deadline, Katy offered to sell the digital file of her print. Presently, Katy hasn’t made digital print sales a huge priority in her shop, though she does admit Etsy has made increasing strides for both sellers and buyers to work with digital products. Little Red Flag currently sells more physical than digital prints, but one of Katy’s growing to-do list items is to make each of her physical print listings digital. Tips for Finding A Local Printer Katy has found an amazing local printer to work with who makes ordering small batches and quick turn-arounds a breeze. She offers several tips for finding the right local printer, and how to ensure the quality of the finished product is up to your standards. Ask your peers. When Katy was on the hunt for a local printer, she talked to fellow designers in her area who were printing similar products and asked for recommendations. Not only is this a fabulous way to build your network, you’ll be sure to get solid recommendations! Try a college / university printer. Through her networking, Katy found a print shop attached to a local university with a graphic design program. This is a great win as the printers are geared towards graphic design, which means their paper and ink is high quality and they are willing to do small jobs. We love this kind of thinking outside-the-box! Test print quality. Katy suggests sending a smaller job to the print shop first to test the quality. You want to make sure the integrity of your work is preserved. Don’t hesitate to request changes if the final product isn’t to your liking. Ask questions. Katy asked specific questions of her printer before giving them her business. Ask about turnaround time. Ask about the size and expertise of their staff. And, importantly, what happens if the print quality isn’t what you expect. Build relationships. As a loyal customer, Katy has a very strong relationship with her local print shop. Katy’s printer values her, and they’ve made it a point to make sure she’s a satisfied customer.  Printing Logistics Katy stocks popular prints (like her train series, which she sells two to three of a week) and prints those in massive batches. More frequently, a couple of times a week Katy will put the orders she’s gotten into a simple .pdf file and send that to the printer. Because she has a great relationship with her printer, she’s able to print jobs as small as one and as large as fifty. Katy's Adorable Vintage Train Print Set Use This Tip to Fool-Proof Working with a Printer! When printing pieces, Katy uses InDesign to import her images into a new file, and then creates a .pdf prepared for bulk printing. Another great way that Katy has built a strong relationship with her printer is by making their job easy! Rather than sending a bunch of different prints and asking for varying quantities of each, Katy sends a single file exactly as it should be printed. So, instead of asking the printer to print one page twenty times, she will send over a file with the twenty pages of the same image they only have to print once. She fool-proofs the printing process by giving the printer just one job - open the document and hit print! What a nice touch! Adding New Services Recently, Katy added a custom book cover design service to her listings. In fact, Katy designed the cover of our book, Time Management Mama. She enjoys these special projects as she’s able to take them on with her tight schedule. Although, Katy has realized there are some very interesting book covers needing designed. (To hear just how interesting, you’ll have to listen!) She didn’t realize there was such a booming market for book covers! Taking A Creative Sabbatical With an overflowing ‘to-do’ list, Katy decided to take a creative sabbatical. She blocked out several weeks in her schedule to tackle business projects and dream up new plans. We think it’s genius that Katy didn’t set her Etsy shop on ‘vacation mode’, but simply pared down her listings to digital options. This means Katy’s workload during her sabbatical was incredibly manageable, plus she didn’t lose out on sales! Katy’s items are so popular, she still has had incoming conversations asking if certain listings are still available in physical format. Katy then has been able to address those questions on a one-to-one basis and do what’s best for her. Brilliant! Custom Book Cover Design With the advent of digital publishing, the self-publishing industry has simply exploded and will likely continue to expand. A new genre of book cover design has sprung up around this trend. Every blogger these days, it seems, has produced an e-book. There is a huge market for digital designers. One huge benefit of working with a designer for your book cover needs is the continuous working relationship that is formed. As mentioned, Katy actually designed the cover of our ebook, Time Management Mama. When it came time for us to produce the audiobook version of TMM, we needed the same book cover rendered at a different size. The great thing about having already worked with Katy is that we simply asked her to create an Audible-friendly version of our book cover and Viola! Katy is actually working on a brand new book cover for Sarah's book - which will come out soon! We can't wait to share it with you! Who’s Your Competition? Competition is unavoidable in the marketplace. Custom designers are up against services like 99designs, which promise hasty turnarounds but not a great deal of true customization. We prefer to use the services of other hard working mamas, and we know a lot of our listeners do, too! Don’t give up on Etsy. Business owners can actually solve a great many of their problems by utilizing Etsy, or other freelance services. The Internet Age has changed the terms of intellectual property, as well. It’s easy to be inspired and do great work, but forget the original source. Katy uses the example of her aunt asking her to design a logo for a highly competitive niche. The logo Katy needed to design couldn’t even hint at any sort of copyright infringement. She had to do extensive research to protect the originality of her product. Big-box services like 99designs aren’t personally invested in the outcome of a product, so they may not be as compelled to take the extra mile with each client’s logo. These are issues you'll want to think through when outsourcing design work. “Mommy Did It”- Katy’s Adorable Mom Moment Nothing melts Katy’s heart like her children pointing to her work displayed in their rooms and saying, “Mommy did it!” The pride her children have for her business is just too sweet!
