Gary J. Walters was an integral part of White House history during a 37 year career in which he served seven presidents and their families. Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House HIstorical Association, sat down with Gary to recount some of the moments he witnessed which are also captured in the new book White House Memories 1970 - 2017: Recollections of the Longest Serving Chief Usher. Gary started his tenure at the White House during the Nixon presidency as an Executive Protective Service officer. In 1976 he became an assistant usher under President Gerald Ford. When Gary was named Chief Usher in 1986 he took on a job that transcended politics. The Chief Usher oversees the day to day operations of the Executive Mansion and grounds, managing the Residence staff and a space that is uniquely many things: a living museum, a ceremonial and working space, as well as a home. In this episode, Gary recounts the joys and challenges of elegant State Dinners and decorating for the holidays, and reflects on solemn moments such as the assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan and the events of September 11th, 2001. Foremost in his mind was making sure the presidents and first families were comfortable and afforded privacy during what were often stressful times. When he retired in 2007 after 21 years as Chief Usher, Gary received the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service from President George W. Bush. Remarkably, Gary continues to serve by directing the proceeds from his book to the mission of the White House Historical Association: to share the history of the White House, the People's House.  White House Memories 1970 - 2017: Recollections of the Longest Serving Chief Usher by Gary J. In this Dhamma talk at the International Buddhist Meditation Center Los Angeles on September 21, 2025, Subodha shares his thoughts on the autumn equinox as a time of balance. He shares how balance is often paired with equanimity and acceptance and how all are often mistaken for the goal of the path rather than part of the path. This is highlighted through his sharing of the five recollections and how even monks sometimes exclude the fifth recollection in favor of framing the first four around acceptance of aging, illness, death, and change. But it is the fifth recollection that has the power to change your life because it is a reminder of the power of your actions.

Ajahn Dhammasiha talks about the benefits of Buddhānussati, recollecting the Buddha. This meditation object can be particular helpful if we're finding ourselves overwhelmed by emotions. Reciting "Iti pi so..." or "Buddho" loudly, and totally focussing the mind on the Buddha, can cut through strong defilements or emotional turmoil, and bring our mind back to a more wholesome state. 101 yr old Bea Franklin (at the time of interview on June 4, 2025), born June 30. 1924, is probably the only living eyewitness to the iconic 1945 Times Square sailor kisses nurse scene captured in an iconic photo seen around the world til this very day.  When the Emperor of Japan announced the Japanese surrender ending World War II, on Tuesday Aug 14, 1945, Bea was a student at New York University. A little past midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a US Navy cruiser, had just delivered the uranium that would be used in the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan, and was returning to the Philippines when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo. The ship was badly damaged in the attack and within ten minutes it rolled onto its side, dumping 890 crewmen into the pitch-black ocean and dragging the remaining 300 down with the ship.Those who survived the torpedo strike did what they could to grab supplies before abandoning ship, but there were very few life boats or life jackets, so many of the sailors had to float in the water or cling to the few rafts they did manage to take before jumping from the boat. To make matters worse, their mission had been highly confidential and no one in the Navy knew where the Indianapolis was, much less that it had sank.
