Supervising a Peace that Never Was: Recollections of Canadian Diplomatic Personnel in Indochina, 1954–1973 is a collection of essays written by former Canadian diplomats who served on international commissions in Indochina. These individuals were initially deployed to oversee the implementation of the 1954 Geneva Accords (through the International Commission for Supervision and Control, or ICSC) and later, in 1973, to monitor compliance with the Paris Peace Agreement (under the International Commission of Control and Supervision, or ICCS). Over the course of two decades, young Canadians were posted to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos—regions in which Canada had previously played a minimal role. The chapters that follow reflect their personal memories and experiences during these diplomatic missions. It got me thinking that I really want to start something with my Legacy Fiber Artz minis from previous year advents. Maybe a Granny Stripe blanket? Or perhaps another Recollections crochet blanket. I made one in the summer of 2022 (check out my Ravelry Project Page). It uses fingering weight yarn held triple and treble crochets. You work each row right to left and cut each time. between each set of clusters you use a main color. Debating using Fibernymph 10g minis from last year's advent for those rows (notes say it used- about 8g per row but that's held triple which might just be too annoying). I'm debating making a smaller blanket that will live on the backseat of my car, draped over. Mostly for the pop of color with my gray interior but I bet the kids would use it when they're back there. I'd also like to make a crocheted granny square tank top for the summer so I could potentially use some of my minis for that. Currently based in New York City, Long is a DIY lifer, with over twenty years dedicated to Earthen Sea's wide range of sounds from long-form noise and drone recordings, minimal dub techno, and ethereal ambient experimentation. Long spent his early musical years in the Washington, D.C. hardcore group Black Eyes, before heading to San Francisco with bandmate Daniel Martin-McCormick to work with Damon Palermo on Mi Ami. While all three members branched off into their own solo electronic projects (Ital/Relaxer for Martin-McCormick and Magic Touch for Palermo), Long's work as Earthen Sea originated in the early 2000s. It began with longer experiments in drone and ambient before morphing into the icy dub techno many came to know from releases on Kranky and Lover's Rock. Recent LPs, such as 2024's Recollection, have veered to ambient, dub, and jazz-influenced tracks that consistently deliver the goods. For his mix, Earthen Sea offers an exhilarating combination of gamelan recordings, jazz, and dub techno. My daughter and I had not been back to that camp in the Tetons since she was a little girl, like five years old. We stayed there as a family way back then, because our good friends from college ran the camp. There she struck up a friendship with their five-year-old who's named Holly. Well, the camp has grown a lot over the years, and so have our daughters who are speeding through their lives. It was kind of fun for them to see each other again and Holly took my daughter for a little private tour of a bunk house that was there some years ago when we were there. They had to bend down for what Holly wanted to show her. But there it was, still decorating the wood, in living Crayola color, Holly's name in red crayon and my daughter's in blue Crayon; both written in distinctive penmanship that five-year-olds have, and both still there after all these years. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Lasting Mark of Life's Mistakes." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Genesis 32, beginning at verse 24. Jacob has been having a wrestling match with someone who turns out to be divine. And verse 24 says, "Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak." Finally the fight ends when that man touches the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with that man. Later, Jacob knows who he met there. He called the place Peniel, saying, "'It is because I saw God face-to-face, and yet my life was spared.' The sun rose above him as he had passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip." Jacob struggled with God. He'd actually wrestled with Him his whole life. But at this brook he goes for God's full blessing. God changes him from Jacob, the cheat, and He changes his name to Israel, Prince with God. The whole nation will be named after him. God forgives. God transforms Jacob, and He's still doing that with Jacobs today. But even though the struggle with God was over, Jacob carried a life-long reminder of his struggle - the limp. The sin was forgiven, the man was changed, but as happens so often, he'd struggled with God and that left a mark on him the rest of his life. Now, my daughter couldn't get over how long the marks had lasted for what she did many years ago. In a way, that's a picture of how sin is. Even though the sin is long behind us, long forgiven, often the consequences, the marks of our sin are there for years to come. Sin is cruel. You were once its slave, and you're free now but you still carry some of the scars of how your slave master treated you. You always will. We need to remember what sin does, because those scars, those lasting consequences will deter us from leaving God's ways again. Now, forgiveness comes quickly when we bring our sin to the cross of Jesus, but it doesn't come cheaply; it cost Him his life. But the ready availability of forgiveness should not make us forget the sometimes continuing consequences of sin - the limp that is there long after our struggle with God is behind us. I think of four Rs that explain some of the lasting marks of sin. Reputation - the damage to your reputation can last a long time. Regrets - there for years. Relationships that were damaged that are hard to repair. Recollection - the memories that just keep coming back. It's a sobering reminder to seriously count the cost before we take any spiritual detour. The scars of our past aren't all bad. Not if they remind us to stay away from sin because of its price tag. And it's wonderful to know that God has forever erased those sins from His book. You say, "Well, Ron, I'm not sure I've ever had that happen." Well, have you ever, in your heart, gone to His cross and said, "Jesus, You're dying for my sins there." If you've never put your life in His hands, do it now. You say, "Jesus, I'm yours." Our website is there to help you be sure you belong to Him. It's ANewStory.com. And the next time sin looks enticing and interesting, let's not forget what our daughter was so graphically reminded of, staring at the marks she made so many years ago. The marks still remain long after what we did to make the marks is over.

I'm reading Ted Gioia's "Immersive Humanities Course," 52 weeks of World Classics. We start with Plato! The Last Days of Socrates and excerpts from The Republic. I'm a beginner at reading the classics, but I've decided to just "crack the book" and get started. Here are a few of my key take-aways from Plato:Human nature just doesn't change. Socrates talks about how to influence a crowd (by misrepresenting ideas), and he gives a pretty funny explanation of misanthropy that I didn't expect. (You hate people because you expect them to be perfect and they aren't. Grow up, get real, and understand that the vast majority are neither purely good or purely evil, but somewhere in the middle.)The distinction between an Idea (maybe think of it as a quality, like Beauty) and the thing that has the beauty (like a beautiful vase, for example) is important. The object can point to the Truth of the quality but never perfectly. It is critical to be very clear on what is the Idea and what is the object exemplifying that Idea. That sounds very obvious when I write it but in the real world it is easy to skip over.These books covered things I had heard of, like the Theory of Ideas, the Argument from Affinity, and the Theory of Recollection. I won't go into them here, but I have kept notes to trace them for myself. There was a surprising amount of reflection on the nature of the soul. Now, of course, I'm wondering exactly when did the Greeks divide man into body and soul, and what exactly did “soul” mean for them? I know they didn't necessarily think of it like I think of my soul as a Christian.Book I of The Republic is all about “doing right,” a phrase for a Greek word that is also translated “justice” but incorporates a much bigger and more moral sense than mere legal justice. There is a lot to think about for people who are considering leadership, especially political leadership. Finally, the Cave Allegory. I thought it was basically about not seeing things clearly, but learning to see them as they really are. In fact it is much, much more than that. In particular, Socrates talks about learning to see in the bright light, and then trying to come back to those inside the cave, trying to explain the truth. And there's a line that I'll misquote, but the point is, “Are you blind because you have always been in the dark, or are you blind because you were dazzled by brightness?” What a question.This is a year-long challenge! A little past midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a US Navy cruiser, had just delivered the uranium that would be used in the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan, and was returning to the Philippines when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo. The ship was badly damaged in the attack and within ten minutes it rolled onto its side, dumping 890 crewmen into the pitch-black ocean and dragging the remaining 300 down with the ship.Those who survived the torpedo strike did what they could to grab supplies before abandoning ship, but there were very few life boats or life jackets, so many of the sailors had to float in the water or cling to the few rafts they did manage to take before jumping from the boat.
