Resolutions, training changes and motivation for the New Year!New Year Survey (of course!) Click here to take it! Year in review, how did you do? Did you actually write resolutions or goals last year? If you did can you find them?Did you write them in your calendar, fitness log, on a Facebook post or what? Here's another question....Have you had the same resolution each year?Maybe its time to change your focus to ... resolutions that have nothing to do with your body, weight or training. Here's a few suggestions:learn something newhelp someoneget organizedclean out closetbreak a bad habit Put your goals or resolutions out there for all of us to keep you accountable! Post one on Facebook or Twitter or send an email to your closest friend or me!!MOTIVATIONFor the New Year, ask yourself...“Why am I training?”Are you training for a competition, for health, for looks, for what? It's extremely important to answer your “why” question honestly! You may find that your “why” changes every few months. For example, in the Fall/Winter, your “why am I training?” might be answered with, “I want to maintain my metabolism and progress through the holidays.” In the Spring, it might be “ I want to get tighter for bathing suit season. In the Summer, it might be, “I want to enjoy outdoor activities like water skiing and mountain biking as my workouts.” I use Cycles when creating an exercise program. Cycles are a period of time that you use an exercise routine before you change it. Your exercise routine is only good for as long as it takes your body to adapt to it. Your question could also be “Why am I training this Cycle?”Exercise Cycle time for various fitness levels:Beginner Cycles: 4-6 weeksIntermediate Cycles: 3-4 weeksAdvanced Cycles: 2-4 weeksSome examples of why you may be training this cycle, or what to focus on in this current cycle would be:Get stronger in my compound lifts such as squats, bench press and deadlifts Eat scheduled mealsBe consistent with workoutsCommit to training calves two times a weekThese Cycles are what I use with myself, my clients and on Clubfit as well as QFC (QuickFitClub). The Clubfit cycles are four (4) weeks. Most of the workouts can be done at the gym or home, and you have printable workout logs that have photos of the exercises and a place to record your weights.QFC (QuickFitClub) has cycles of 2-4 weeks. These are video workouts that you follow at home. Usually these workouts are shorter than your average gym workout.Speaking of QFC (QuickFitClub), I thought it was ready to launch, but I am not thrilled with the latest production. The workouts are solid, but I'm picky on the background, the music, me etc. and am not over the top thrilled. Which makes me ponder the following question...... Which is more important to you:A solid, effective workout ORA pretty set with nice musicTell me and Leave your thoughts in the comments below or on the QFC (QuickFitClub) website!TRAININGHow often do you change your training program?Do you really think that the same exercises over and over will change your body?Do you fall for the advertising that tells you legs lifts for 3 minutes a day will get you a flat tummy? (I swear I just saw this link on twitter!) What are your personal thoughts on the right training program? My philosophy is that getting in shape isn't hard, doesn't require hours of exercise or grueling diets, it just requires you do the right exercises, the right way.And yes, that means weight training should be your priority over cardio. Face it, cardio you can do anywhere, any time, but weights, and more specifically, progressively heavier weights, are not so easy to do anywhere.Weight training and the strength it develops when done correctly are the keys to weight control, weight management and basically eating what you want without worrying about weight gain!!I know this for a fact because I have lived this and the women that have taken my advice and my clients have too! They realize how wrong they were in the past to focus purely on cardio. You'll find that Clubfit as well as QFC (QuickFitClub) workouts focus on weight training. They also use a workout tempo that provides cardio and fat burning while you strengthen and tone!I'll never understand those who say they want to "lose the weight, then tone." Why take twice as long when you can do both at the same time and get to your goal faster!! Really!? Someone tell me why people still think this way!!!!NUTRITIONLittle changes add up! Here are some swaps to replace sugar:apple sauce stevia sweetener vanilla extract (or other: check maple or almond extract) honey maple syrup Remember: here's what I want you to do!Share your resolutions from last year and / or this year with me via comments, email or social media! Let me help you stay accountable and reach your goals this year!Get all the most recent episodes on iTunes or download this episode here: Fit: 234 Resolutions, Change Your Training and What's Your Motivation for the New Year Now available in paperback: "Mindset Makeover," available at The Book Patch.com. Assistant Vice Chancellor & Professor of Chemistry Director Emerita, Center for Academic Success Louisiana State UniversityRegister HereWhy should students understand more about their own options for studying and learning? How can they take more responsibility for their own learning? How can faculty enable students to make more effective choices about their own learning? McGuire and Eder will describe how undergraduate students can improve their own learning rapidly and significantly in most courses (both face-to-face and online) by using strategies such as:A. Teaching students to apply Bloom's Taxonomy and PARSA Study Cycle in specific courses - and more widelyB. Assessing students' engagement with course activities and content Other colleagues will share specific Low-Threshold Activities/Apps/Assessments (LTAs) and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) that can be used to support such strategies by faculty and/or directly by students to improve student learning in a variety of courses. In FridayLive! in March we revisited Chickering and Gamson's "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education" and Ehrmann's article, "Implementing the Seven Principles: Technology as Lever." Metacognition was the most frequent suggestion for an extension of the original Seven Principles. Teaching undergraduate students to use Bloom's Taxonomy to make better decisions about their own studying and learning is a strategy of metacognition. Up-coming FridayLive! Please feel free to contact me at (403) 701-8998 for a free real estate buying or selling consultation to answer any of your questions. Today I am going to be addressing some issues that a lot of clients in Calgary have been asking me about. The seller's market that we had in 2014 has faded, but that's not the only thing that you should know.My advice to buyers in Calgary is to go ahead and get yourselves Pre-qualified for a mortgage loan. This is a special designation that sellers love to see because they know you are serious about purchasing and that if you extend an offer on a home that you will follow through with it. The verification process has become harder, but if you pass it will only make you stand out more. Your offer should rise to the top with a pre-qualification letter. If you are a seller in Calgary I would propose that you make sure that the condition and price of your home are comparable. If your price is not right, then you will not be able to attract buyers to your property. Also, if an appraiser from a bank comes in and his price doesn't match your value, then there will be problems and the sale could fall apart. If you would like to know more about our local market here in Calgary, then please do not hesitate to contact my team for more information. We would be happy to help you.

Weekend before last, I trekked east about an hour to reunite with five friends from freshman year in college. We go back a fair bit, you could say. We generally meet every five years and, for this visit, I selected a refurbished 1900s hunting lodge in the Highlands Nature Sanctuary, a part of the Arc of Appalachia, with the mission of reuniting the Appalachian Forest. It's a good, central meeting point because we travel from Cleveland, OH, to Nashville and points between. Lucky for me, Cincinnati is about midway.Highlands is the former Seven Caves attraction, which has been closed to grow the bat population. When we stopped at the former gift shop, now museum, library and guide station, one college friend, the plant pathologist for the State of Tennessee, carried on quite a conversation about the white mold that's diminished bats. Fortunately, the attendant said, it hadn't reach Highlands; another reason the walkways, electricity and tourist traffic were removed from the caves. This slice of beauty seems to maintain the perfect balance between nature and man, preservation and cultivation, awareness and relaxation. The lodge and surrounding trails were perfect for our group's reconnection. I arrived first – barely. The drive out State Route 50 was slow and beautiful, easing me into a more contemplative rhythm. Peering down the paved path from the drive, I spotted more than enough white rockers for our group and took that as a welcome sign. Inside, I dropped my bags and just sighed. This was it, the place I have been searching for: rustic, but not antiquated, preserved, but not stuffy. Seems the original 1920s wicker in terrific shape has been retained. Five bedrooms with two single beds each line the sides of the lodge. In the center is a fire place and staircase to the lower level of kitchen, prep area, large dinging room and porched piazza. Upstairs are two living rooms, a large porch with swings, two more intimate, closed porches and a bathroom with double toilets and showers. This would be just fine, I told myself, scrambling to think of other opportunities to rent this gem.We arrived in clumps, all within an hour or so of my entrance. And, the parade of food never stopped. We began to wonder just how long we'd intended to stay, but with a gathering of mothers, we never go hungry nor run out of conversation. I think we all wished the weekend wouldn't end. After a late night chatting – some into the wee hours – we shared breakfast (pumpkin waffles and maple syrup) and headed out for a hike. Two planners selected the trail, but we opted to stop at the station. Unfortunately, with four of us crammed in the back, the driver hit an undetected old stone. Ouch, her SUV said. Its owner was much more gracious. Back on the narrow roads, we passed the hidden trail, then backtracked, parked and walked to the river. I happily crossed into the water and over stones in my Vibram Five Fingers, my yoga shoes with separate toe compartmments. I caught some flack earlier for wearing them, but squishing in the mud is wonderful. Dead end. The trail began on the other side of the road. Go figure, it wasn't visible from the car and literature mentioned it wouldn't be as they encourage hiking, but want to preserve and return the forest. It was a beautiful hike on an Indian summer afternoon flanked by women I grew up with: through finals and flirting, serious relationships and break-ups, good roomies and bad. I was so intent on listening to a conversation as we walked single file, that I lifted my eyes from the trail and tangle of roots only momentarily when, I felt a glacial shiver in reaction to contact with something cold and slimy on my ankle. Instinctively, I walked past until my mind ached to know what sort of mud would reach only above my foot and not encase the rest of the shoe. Not mud, but a very long, writhing and rising snake, unhappy with the close encounter. We all took many giant steps away and watched as it seethed from being disturbed. I felt empathy – from a distance. I hadn't mean to disturb this creature and seemed to have stepped up against its coil, not directly on it.I wouldn't get close enough to identify it, but we were pretty certain it wasn't a rattler or copperhead. Even in that moment of recognition, I felt as if this were a symbolic experience, not necessarily a visceral one. That thought was reinforced minutes later when, on another path, an even longer, very black serpent of sorts slithered across into an old shed. In all my years of visiting the Smokies and heading out solo once to the desert to paint and realizing that was ridiculous, I've never seen a big snake outside of glass. Then two within the hour? We were all a little stunned. We returned to the cabin warm and sweaty, ready for showers and a cold beer. There was a squeal as Deb discovered a wide worm in the drain. What sort of conspiracy was this? Alone, she probably wouldn't have thought twice about collecting him and tissue and letting him loose off the front porch. But a third slimy thing? When I returned home and caught up my best friend, she automatically said it meant that I had brushed with something dark and it hadn't harmed me. That I had gotten past unscathed. Interesting, I thought and, later googled the symbolism of the snake. I wasn't expecting its significance: primal energy, life source, healing, transformation and ... purification. Wasn't that the VERY same word my spiritual director drew for me at the beginning of the year; my word for the year? The snake or serpent also signifies spiritual guidance, a period of transition or personal growth, stepping into the unknown, needing support and a reminder to stay grounded as one moves through changes. These are big ideas that do mean something in my life. They connect to other events and experiences. I see them as hopeful and positive, perhaps not always easy. However, when I read that the snake represents our vital energy, coiled at the base of the spine and the movement of kundalini, I was reminded of my last shamanic/massage session two days before the snakes appeared. I had asked for opening and, of course, hip work. My careful therapist waited til the end to get to the hips, especially the one injured so many years ago. And, he actually got a part to unlock. "That old, stubborn thing," I'd carelessly remarked. "It doesn't know any different than to hold all of that energy," Gary responded. So I have been gentler, waiting ... for the snake, I suppose.• When have I had an encounter with an animal that held a message?• How aware was I in that moment?• What were the circumstances?• What did I learn?• What place do I believe animals hold in the world?geared up torelax and playwith longtime,close-knitwomenwe quicklyshed ourfilters andinhibitionsof the five yearssince we'd metface to faceall of usrekindlingthe bonds ofinnocence andgrowth we collectivelyexperiencedand, together, wetook the untroddenpath, hard tolocate, yet beautifuland terrifying aswe stumbledupon him, clothed just as the forest floorbrushing past, awakening hisseething energy, then lettinghim reassembleas wemore carefullywound ourway aroundand out ofthe woodstogetherListen to this post:

Holy cow. Sorry for the long time between updates. Nora and I have not had a chance to do a normal Jawbone in quite some time because of a various number of reasons. But don't give up hope yet. I do have a new "old" show from the first 60 to share. I have decided to give myself a schedule for these so I will be posting these on the infamous "Throwback Thursdays".This show is from 2/23/05 and features Nora's sister Joan and her now ex-husband Aaron. I have to be honest, I didn't listen to this episode as there is a certain awkwardness for me hearing from someone who is no longer in your day to day life. I'm sure it's funny, but I have no desire to listen to it. I guess this is one of the byproducts of doing a podcast. Life changes and you have an audio recording of time before that change. In any event, I hope you enjoy this throwback. RSS FeedDownload Now!

Like the Neil episode from before, this is also a pretty important episode of Jawbone. For some reason, I create a fake feud between our show and the PodFather Adam Curry. I don't know why I did this, perhaps only to get more listeners, so you know, trolling. Anyhow, listen in to another nugget of history from us.RSS FeedDownload Now!

Whoo, am I getting behind here on shows! Both old and new. In any event, this show was recorded the very next night after our last show - even though it's taken me a month to post it). In any event, this was a pretty momentous episode as it is the first episode where Neil makes an appearance. This is the origin of the fat guy in the basement story. Around this time, we had seen dozens of stories about people being cut out of basements because they basically ate themselves to morbid obesity. It's a sad truth to be sure, but what struck me as most odd was the amount of people in CLEVELAND who had this problem. In any event, enjoy this "must-hear" episode of Jawbone.RSS FeedDownload Now!

Isabel was a great twist... Love his badass armor. Thea's family are a bunch of liars. Heh. Star City. I get it. Triumvirate of evil. "Oliver needs one more distraction." And Slade needs one less. Come back in two weeks for "The Man Under the Hood."
This episode was called "Under Pressure from Reality TV" originally uploaded 2/18/05. It's fun to hear us talk a little bit more about ourselves and then sidestep the issue. We re getting closer to perfecting our style, if we ever had a style. One thing I noticed is that the theme song I chose for the opening of the show makes for a very laid back overall feel. I like where we are now with the theme. It's funny how the music really sets the tone for the rest of the podcast. I even had a weird music bed in the background throughout the show, which, if I'm being honest, actually sounds pretty cool. I might do that again! This is also the show where we first reference the fat guy living in the basement. Good times, good times.Anyway, enjoy this flashback!RSS FeedDownload Now!
On the second episode of SlyCast: The Sylvester Stallone Fan Podcast hosts Craig Cohen, Jeff Ferry and Jeff Hulit have an in depth discussion about Rocky and Rocky II. In addition to breaking each film down, they cover Stallone's initial inspiration for the story, the original studio choices for actors to portray Rocky and why Rocky shouldn't be viewed as an unworthy Oscar winner. In between films they take a look at Sly's 1979 appearances on "The Muppet Show" and "Dinah!" prior to the release of Rocky II.(02:00:12) Download (right click, save as)Craig with the Rocky statue - September 2006.
This is what I could call an "experimental" show. It's pretty rough for me to listen to this one because I was trying to get this show to sound like a terrestrial radio show, so there are a bunch of music stops and carts and soundboards - ugh. It sounds pretty bad to my ears. Everything was more or less planned out in my head, but it wasn't really planned out for Nora and you can hear her frustration with me. Nora just wanted to talk and I wanted it to sound like a "radio" show. We are definitely still trying to find out footing. But this show was one of those where I felt I had to have content to keep people listening and the "content" was me playing carts.Enjoy and let us know if you like this!RSS FeedDownload Now!
It's a Valentine's Day show from 2/14/05. By now, we are really into the groove and this feels like Jawbone's of today. There's a definite newness to this, as if we were trying to impress someone on a first date. I'm still experimenting with music at the top of the show and I also swear once or twice at the top of the show, taking full advantage of the podcasting format. I still feel weird about doing that on our show because it is not my personality to use foul language all the time. But I think it was a reaction to me not being able to swear on during our college radio days and I was putting some bravado on for my college radio buddies who were no doubt listening in.Good show. Very classic experimental Jawbone. We even sound sort of ready for the topic, which is a nice change of pace. RSS FeedDownload Now!

This is the show that really got us to a point where we were OFFICIAL PODCASTERS. We have an intro, stingers (courtesy or our friend Pete AKA DJ Hojo), two mics and we actually sound sort of professional. Nora still sounds a little bit drunk and her speech sounds a bit slow because of the audio delay from us recording in Garageband. (Yes, we recorded podcasts in Garageband). On this show, we wrap up the trilogy or our home inspection podcasts, the shows that got us online to begin with. Enjoy! And please let us know if you like this trip down memory lane.RSS FeedDownload Now!
Episode is more of the same from the Pilot, where we discuss our impending home inspection, except now, we have two mics and some production values. Keep in mind it is less than 24 hours than we did the last show. When we first started podcasting, Nora and I were doing 3 shows a week! We were young and crazy and out of control. This is getting closer to where we ended up, but we are still battling all kinds of audio issues on our end. Nora sounds a little drunk because she still hasn't learned how to combat the audio delay by pulling one earphone off your ear.I hope you are enjoying these. If you are please let us know! BTW, Nora and I will still be recording new shows. This is just an extra for longtime fans of our show.Cheers!RSS FeedDownload Now!
Over the past few days, I've been randomly listening to old episodes of Jawbone. I've been recording a lot of new stuff for Geek A Week, so occasionally, my computer will start playing an old episode and I'll have it on in the back as I'm working. What strikes me the most about these old shows is that I barely remember recording them, so it's been like having the listener experience. They've been fun to listen to, so I went back to the archives and realized that the first 60 episodes are nowhere to be found. One of our listeners actually alerted me to this while at DragonCon this past year and asked if I would ever make those public again. So I've decided to do just that. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting, in order, the first 60 episodes of Jawbone Radio. I figured it's worth putting them up so people can hear our humble beginnings. Not only that, but these first 60 episodes are an archive of how Nora and I fumbled our way into podcasting. There are discussions about us hitting the front page of our local newspaper, how our story was syndicated across the country and how the BBC picked us as a top podcast to listen to (still unbelievable to me). There are also audio experiments where I would back up my gear when I would go on business trips and Nora and I would record remotely. There are live audio soundscapes and all kinds of really fun experiments that Nora and I don't get a chance to do anymore. So without further ado, here is Episode 1 of Jawbone Radio originally published February 10, 2005.Enjoy!RSS FeedDownload Now!
