Two of the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament mention Satan. Nineteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament do. Something happened in between, and almost nobody in the pews knows what it was. In this episode, Dr. Ryan Stokes takes us back to the oldest texts, where the word we translate as Satan is not a name at all. It is a noun. And it does not mean accuser. It means attacker. As Christians we understand that we have a Savior because we have an enemy:  Satan translated from “Sat-ton” in Hebrew meaning, “Adversary” He is our Adversary because scripture calls him the “accuser of the brethren”. In Zechariah chapter 3, we find Joshua the high priest standing before the Lord—and standing right beside him is Satan, resisting and accusing him.  And perhaps the most powerful part of the story is that Joshua's garments really are filthy. As the “father of lies,” as Jesus called him, he's not wrong in his accusation, but that's where the power of a just and loving God comes in. God speaks. “The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan.” God removes Joshua's filthy garments, takes away his iniquity, and clothes him with something new. His responsibility is to listen for the Word of the Lord and faithfully sound the warning. But Ezekiel cannot control what others do with what they hear. His calling is faithfulness, not control. We also hear something remarkable about the heart of God. God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. His desire is that people turn from paths of destruction and live. Even in passages filled with judgment, we are invited to see the God who desires life. Then Revelation 12 pulls back the curtain on the conflict beneath the surface of history. We see the woman, the child, the dragon, Michael and his angels, and the great accuser cast down. But how is the enemy overcome? Not through greater violence. Not through domination or fear. "They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." Today's devotion reminds us that accusation is not the voice that gets the final word over our lives. The Lamb has overcome. In Christ, we are invited to step out from under shame and accusation and bear witness to the love that has set us free. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There is an accuser. And there is a Lamb. Revelation 12 gives us a picture of the spiritual conflict beneath the surface of the world. John sees a dragon, the ancient serpent, the one called the devil and Satan. And John gives him another name. The accuser. He is the one who accuses God's people day and night. That voice is familiar to many of us. It is the voice that tells you that you are your worst failure. It reminds you of what you did. What you should have done. What you said. What you should have said. It tells you that you are unworthy, unwanted, disqualified, and alone. Accusation has a way of reducing us to the worst thing about us. But Revelation tells us something astonishing. The accuser has been thrown down. And how is he overcome? John tells us: "They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." The Lamb has overcome the accuser. Jesus does not overcome through accusation of his own. He does not defeat violence by becoming more violent. He does not conquer evil by becoming evil. The Lamb conquers by giving himself away in love. The cross exposes the lie of the accuser because there we see what God actually thinks about humanity. God does not abandon us. God comes for us. God enters our violence, our shame, our sin, and our death. And he forgives. He heals. He restores. He raises the dead. This is why Ezekiel's words matter so much today. God says, "As surely as I live, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live." God desires life. That is the heart revealed in Jesus. The watchman sounds the warning because destruction is real. The paths we choose matter. Violence, pride, greed, hatred, and self-deception have consequences. But warning is not the same as condemnation. The warning is an invitation. Turn and live. Come home. Step away from the road that is destroying you. There is another way. And this is where our testimony comes in. "They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." Our testimony is not simply the story of everything we have done right. Quite the opposite. Our testimony is that the Lamb has loved us. The Lamb has found us. The Lamb has forgiven us. The Lamb has brought us out from underneath accusation and shame and given us a new identity. We belong to him. So when the accusing voice tells you that your failures define you, look to the Lamb. When shame tells you that you should hide, look to the Lamb. When fear tells you that God has abandoned you, look to the Lamb. When your own heart condemns you, remember the testimony you have been given. You are loved. You are forgiven. You belong. The accuser does not get the final word. Jesus does. And his word over you is life. So let us be faithful watchmen today. Not angry people shouting condemnation at the world, but people who have seen the Lamb and can bear witness to another way. Let our lives say: Turn and live. There is mercy. There is forgiveness. There is healing. There is a God who desires life for his creation. The Lamb has overcome. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! On this September 6th episode, Hunter guides us through Ezekiel 33–35 and Revelation 12. In Ezekiel, the prophet is called to be a watchman. His responsibility is to listen for the word of the Lord and faithfully sound the warning. But Ezekiel cannot control what others do with what they hear. His calling is faithfulness, not control. We also hear something remarkable about the heart of God. God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. His desire is that people turn from paths of destruction and live. Even in passages filled with judgment, we are invited to see the God who desires life. Then Revelation 12 pulls back the curtain on the conflict beneath the surface of history. We see the woman, the child, the dragon, Michael and his angels, and the great accuser cast down. But how is the enemy overcome? Not through greater violence. Not through domination or fear. "They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." Today's devotion reminds us that accusation is not the voice that gets the final word over our lives. The Lamb has overcome. In Christ we are invited to step out from under shame and accusation and bear witness to the love that has set us free. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There is an accuser. And there is a Lamb. Revelation 12 gives us a picture of the spiritual conflict beneath the surface of the world. John sees a dragon, the ancient serpent, the one called the devil and Satan. And John gives him another name. The accuser. He is the one who accuses God's people day and night. That voice is familiar to many of us. It is the voice that tells you that you are your worst failure. It reminds you of what you did. What you should have done. What you said. What you should have said. It tells you that you are unworthy, unwanted, disqualified, and alone. Accusation has a way of reducing us to the worst thing about us. But Revelation tells us something astonishing. The accuser has been thrown down. And how is he overcome? John tells us: "They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." The Lamb has overcome the accuser. Jesus does not overcome through accusation of his own. He does not defeat violence by becoming more violent. He does not conquer evil by becoming evil. The Lamb conquers by giving himself away in love. The cross exposes the lie of the accuser because there we see what God actually thinks about humanity. God does not abandon us. God comes for us. God enters our violence, our shame, our sin, our death. And he forgives. He heals. He restores. He raises the dead. This is why Ezekiel's words matter so much today. God says, "As surely as I live, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live." God desires life. That is the heart revealed in Jesus. The watchman sounds the warning because destruction is real. The paths we choose matter. Violence, pride, greed, hatred, and self-deception have consequences. But warning is not the same as condemnation. The warning is an invitation. Turn and live. Come home. Step away from the road that is destroying you. There is another way. And this is where our testimony comes in. "They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." Our testimony is not simply the story of everything we have done right. Quite the opposite. Our testimony is that the Lamb has loved us. The Lamb has found us. The Lamb has forgiven us. The Lamb has brought us out from underneath accusation and shame and given us a new identity. We belong to him. So when the accusing voice tells you that your failures define you, look to the Lamb. When shame tells you that you should hide, look to the Lamb. When fear tells you that God has abandoned you, look to the Lamb. When your own heart condemns you, remember the testimony you have been given. You are loved. You are forgiven. You belong. The accuser does not get the final word. Jesus does. And his word over you is life. So let us be faithful watchmen today. Not angry people shouting condemnation at the world, but people who have seen the Lamb and can bear witness to another way. Let our lives say: Turn and live. There is mercy. There is forgiveness. There is healing. There is a God who desires life for his creation. The Lamb has overcome. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. The single greatest weapon we have against the enemy in this spiritual battle is simply knowing who we are before God.Satan comes against us with guilt, shame, and condemnation, whispering that our failures have disqualified us. But Romans 5:17 declares that those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through Jesus Christ. Righteousness is not something that is earned or maintained through perfect behavior. Defeating thoughts have a way of quietly backing us into a corner. Resistance at every turn, mundane tasks that start to feel monumental, weariness that settles in before the day has really begun — and underneath it all, the enemy doing what he does best: creating doubt and fear. It started in the Garden of Eden with a single question: "Did God really say?" That one doubt-filled sentence cost Eve everything, and the pattern has continued ever since. In our work, our relationships, our health, and our faith, Satan works persistently to keep us living from a place of defeat rather than from the victory that already belongs to us. But First Corinthians 15:57 declares something that changes the entire frame: God gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Not someday. Not eventually. Today. The victory is already given, already secured, already ours in Christ. Living from victory rather than toward it is one of the most significant mindset shifts available to a believer. Every doubt, every defeating thought, every whisper of inadequacy has to bow at Jesus' feet — because the enemy has no ground in a life that belongs entirely to Him. Psalm 21 describes God greeting David with rich blessings, granting unending favor, and ensuring that through His unfailing love, David would not be shaken. That same greeting belongs to every child of God today. When a whisper of defeat comes, the response is not a desperate hope that victory might arrive. It is a declaration of what is already true: I am victorious in Christ Jesus. Today's Bible Verse "But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."— 1 Corinthians 15:57, NIV Ponder Today The victory is already given — we live from it, not toward it. First Corinthians 15:57 does not say God will give us victory someday. It says He gives it. Present tense. The finish line is behind us, not ahead of us, because of what Christ accomplished. The enemy's primary weapon is doubt. "Did God really say?" is still his opening move. Recognizing the source of defeating thoughts — and responding with God's truth rather than engaging the question — is one of the most powerful forms of spiritual resistance available. Every inch of your life belongs to Jesus — the enemy has no ground there. When defeat feels like the dominant reality, it is a lie operating on territory it does not own. Reclaiming that territory begins with declaring what is actually true. God greets you with rich blessings and unfailing love. Psalm 21 describes the posture God takes toward those who trust in Him — not reluctant assistance, but generous, joyful blessing. That is the God you are bringing your defeating thoughts to. Let "I am victorious in Christ Jesus" become an anthem, not a last resort. Speaking truth out loud in the face of doubt and fear is not a performance of confidence we do not feel. It is faith declaring what is real before feelings catch up to it. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I admit that I have believed the enemy's lies for far too long. I talk to men every single week often they tell me their good intentions: "She was in pain and I was there. I was present." And I have to applaud them, because that's certainly a win! But I do want to encourage them that presence without words is not enough. Your silence when she's hurting isn't neutral. Unfortunately, it can feel like you don't care. She may even worry that you're judging her. Sadly, she may even feel that her heart doesn't matter to you. I don't think that's what you mean. I think you may just not know what to say. It can feel awkward and risky and you don't want to look stupid. But here's the thing: Jesus wasn't silent. He spoke. He served people with His words. Not to perform. Not to impress. To help them. So here are the words I often invite men to say. It might be worth you writing these down: "Honey, how are you feeling?" "That seems really hard. How are you doing?" "Is there anything you want to share?" Yes, it'll feel awkward. Yes, she might not respond the way you hope. But what you just communicated is: I care about your heart. Do it again next week. And the week after. It compounds. And if you've been wrong, don't just change the behavior. Use words -- don't be silent. I encourage you to apologize. And I invite you to be specific. Own it. Character is revealed more by what you repent of -- even than what you do (Dallas Willard). Silence after conviction isn't golden. It can actually be cowardice wearing a mask. Silence When You Should Be Speaking Belah hears it constantly from the men she coaches: "She was upset and I was there for her. My presence was enough." Her response: No, it wasn't. When your wife is in pain and you say nothing, here's what she hears: You don't care You're judging her Her feelings don't matter to you The truth? Most men just don't know what to say. They're terrified of looking foolish or making it worse. But silence in that moment is more painful than imperfect words. The Phrases That Change Everything Write these down. Put them somewhere you'll see them: "Honey, how are you feeling?" "That seems really hard. How are you doing?" "Is there anything you want to share?" "I know this is hard for you." Maybe add a touch on the shoulder. It doesn't need to be a monologue. It just needs to show you care about her heart. Will she respond perfectly the first time? Maybe not. Do it again next week anyway. What you're communicating over time is: your feelings matter to me. Jesus Wasn't Silent Jesus was a servant leader. He washed feet. He made breakfast. He spoke, not to perform or to be admired, but to serve the people God assigned to Him. He was assigned to 12. Not the whole crowd. He prayed for them (John 17). He explained parables to them that He didn't explain to the crowds. He rebuked Peter directly: "Get behind me, Satan. You are mindful of the things of man and not the things of God." James says the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, then gentle. But it's not silent. Jesus spoke because speaking was service. Your wife is your first human assignment. Love your neighbor as yourself, and your neighbor is the one under your roof. Why Men Stay Silent (The Fall Guy Illustration) Belah shares a scene from the movie The Fall Guy: a stuntman who can jump through fires but hides himself the moment he feels weak. He breaks off contact with the woman he loves because he can't bear for her to see him as less than strong. His confession later: "I tried so many times to say something, and I couldn't think of the right words. And as I'm trying, the time passes, and then I think it's too late. So I just stay silent." This is the pattern Belah sees in real men, real marriages. They don't want to look silly, weak, or incompetent. And so they say nothing. And the silence becomes a wall. The antidote? Practice. Look a little foolish. Do the Chicken Dance if you have to (yes, Belah used to make men do that on coaching calls). Because if you're not willing to do something new, nothing will change. Character Is Revealed by What You Repent Of Dallas Willard: "Character is often revealed more by what you repent of than what you do." Belah shares a story from her husband's pickup soccer game. A skilled player accidentally stepped on her, hard. What set him apart from every other man on that field? He came over, shook her hand, and said specifically: "I didn't realize it was you. Instinct kicked in. I was too rough. I apologize." That apology made her respect him far more than if he'd just treated her gently in the first place. Owning it is strength, not weakness. The SHORE Apology: Be Specific If you're not specific in your apology, the other person doesn't even know if you understand why they're hurt. A vague "I'm sorry" leaves them wondering: does he even know what he did? Was it your tone? Your timing? Your words? A specific phrase? Belah shares her own example: she brought something up at the wrong time in someone's life. The content wasn't wrong. The tone wasn't wrong. The timing was wrong, and it caused pain. She had to own that specifically. When Silence IS Powerful Not all silence is bad. Sometimes you need to stop talking so the Holy Spirit can do His work. In marriage conflict, the back-and-forth cycle (text after text, argument after argument) often keeps both people justified in their reactions. He does something that makes her feel unsafe, she disrespects him, and it spirals. But if you pause, if you walk yourself into calmness and stop needing the last word, you create space for conviction. The Holy Spirit can work in silence. You don't have to win the argument. You just have to stop feeding the fire. Your Assignment Write down these phrases and use one this week: "How are you feeling?" "That seems hard. How are you doing?" If you owe an apology, go be specific. What exactly did you do? Name it. Practice looking a little silly. New behavior is awkward at first, like learning to ride a bike. Know when to speak and when to be silent. Speak when she's hurting. Be silent when the argument is spiraling. Your marriage is worth the awkwardness. Your legacy depends on it. Read OnlineWhile the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Luke 5:1–4At that moment, Simon could not have grasped the full significance of Jesus' actions. Our Lord chose to preach to the crowds from the boat “belonging to Simon.” When He had finished speaking, He turned to Simon and said, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”Traditionally, the boat has been understood as a symbol of the Church. It is particularly meaningful that this first use of a boat in Jesus' public ministry involved Simon's vessel. Later in Luke's Gospel, Jesus says: “Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31–32).In this powerful passage, Jesus entrusts Simon with the unique mission of leadership and fraternal support. Though Simon would stumble during the Passion, his faith would be restored, and his role confirmed, not merely as a disciple, but as one called to fortify the faith of others. This divine commission echoes the symbolic act at the Lake of Gennesaret, where Simon's boat becomes the pulpit from which the Word is proclaimed. And, as is recorded in Matthew's Gospel, Jesus later changed Simon's name to Peter, making him the rock foundation upon which He would build His Church, promising the gates of hell would not prevail against it (cf. Matthew 16:17–19).By choosing Simon's boat, Jesus foreshadowed that the Gospel would go forth from the Church, built upon Simon Peter's faith and leadership. Christ remains the cornerstone, yet Simon would serve as the rock: a foundational witness whose confession and fidelity would uphold the apostolic Church.This moment by the lake is far more than a simple teaching setting. It is a prophetic image of the Church: anchored by Peter, guided by Christ, and commissioned to cast its nets into the deep waters of the world, drawing souls into the Kingdom of God. Christ alone has the power to draw all people to Himself, yet He chooses to do so through Peter, his successors, and all faithful collaborators who serve as fishers of men.As the passage continues, Simon obeys Jesus' command and puts out into deep water. The result is an astonishing catch that is so abundant that the nets begin to tear. Others must come to help, a clear symbol of the necessary collaboration among all members of the Church, working together in Christ's divinely guided mission.We, too, are called to share in that same mission and to imitate Simon's humility upon witnessing the miraculous catch. He fell at Jesus' feet and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). He was deeply humbled and recognized his unworthiness before the divine presence.Jesus, however, looked upon Simon and those with him, including Andrew, James, and John, and said, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men” (Luke 5:10). These words are meant for each of us. Fear is often the greatest obstacle to fully embracing God's call. But when we respond with humility and courage, trusting in His grace, we will find ourselves part of the great mission to draw others into the safety of the Church. Reflect today on the sacred image of Simon's boat. See in it a foreshadowing of the Church, and consider how you are called to serve within her. Christ continues to preach from this vessel, to call others into its safety, and to call you to cast your net into the deep where many souls await the Gospel and God's mercy.All-powerful Lord, You first preached from a humble fishing boat owned by Simon. Today, You continue to preach and reach out to those caught in the deep and turbulent waters of this world. For many years, it was an inspiring book. Then it became a hit Broadway musical. Then it was made into a movie several times. The story is Victor Hugo's classic, Lés Misérables. One of the many dramas in the book portrays the efforts of this group of valiant young men and women to fight to free their fellow Frenchmen from a tyrannical government. They make their stand against a massive French army at a makeshift wall they have constructed. They call it the “barricade of freedom.” They fight bravely, but their cause is threatened by a major problem that develops. They begin to run out of ammunition. Well, this one little boy realizes that their fight for freedom can only continue if they can find more ammunition. So, he risks his own life to crawl across the battle zone, picking up bullets from wounded and dying French soldiers. Because you can't win the battle when you're running out of bullets. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about “Running Out of Ammo in the Battle for Lives.” Right now, there's an ammunition shortage in the most decisive battle of all—that would be the battle for human souls, the battle for human lives. It began at the cross where Jesus died to make eternal life possible. It moved out across the planet at Jesus' command and in the power of His resurrection, and it continues this very day in cities and towns across this country and in every country of the world. It is a fight to liberate people Jesus died for from the penalty and the power of their sin, from an unspeakable eternity, and from Satan's chains. But on so many fronts in the battle, Jesus' forces are running out of bullets. In many places God's soldiers are beating back the enemy, taking prisoners from the enemy and pushing back the darkness. But they're running short of bullets. The money just isn't there to keep pressing the battle. All those letters and appeals you get asking for money for ministry—they're about a lot more than money. For ministries that are really making a difference, it's all about ammunition to keep fighting the battle for lives. But something's gone wrong. It can't be that God isn't giving the money to people through whom He wants to meet these needs. It must be that some of us are sitting on the ammunition instead of sending it to the front lines. And when we lose one of these battles, it's lives we lose—maybe forever. Our word for today from the Word of God lays out how the supply line for God's army is supposed to work. And thinking of the economic battles and struggles and sometimes the downturns of our time, it seems particularly relevant to go back to those Macedonian believers that Paul cited as an example for all of us. Here's what Paul says, “Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity…they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability” (2 Corinthians 8:2-3). It was sacrificial giving so the believers in Jerusalem would have the ammunition they needed to fight their battles. Why? It goes on to say, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that through His poverty we might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Jesus impoverished Himself to make us rich, and He's the Son of God. So, how can we hang onto what He's given us so we can stay in our comfort zone? The battle for a lost and dying world is every believer's battle, not just the battle for a few spiritual daredevils who take all the risks, exercise all the faith, and make all the sacrifices. For those who are fighting on the front lines, it's our responsibility to make every bullet count, to stay on mission, to always take the high road of integrity, and put our faith in Jehovah Jireh, not in our contributors. And for every one of us, we need to hear the cries from the front lines, “We're winning, but we're running out of ammunition!” Listen, while there's time, let's throw everything we can into this battle for which Jesus gave everything He had!
