It could be said that Cecil Rhodes quest for hegemony over the diamond industry of South Africa was quickened by rumours of significant gold discoveries in the Transvaal. Others say not, because no-one was aware in these heady days of just how valuable the Motherlode of Main Reef was to become. First a quick note. The easiest way to picture Kimberley in 1886–87 is not as a collection of neatly separated modern mining companies, each with its own mine. It was more like a gigantic underground chessboard, where the four great diamond mines around Kimberley—De Beers, Kimberley, Dutoitspan and Bultfontein—had originally been divided into hundreds of individual claims. A claim was essentially a small piece of ground, and in the early days an individual digger or small partnership could own one or several of them. As the workings became deeper and more dangerous, those little claims were progressively bundled together into larger holdings and companies. By the mid-1880s, therefore, you had companies that owned groups of claims inside a particular mine, while the word "mine" referred to the entire diamond-bearing pipe or working area. So, if you were standing in Kimberley in 1886 and somebody said, "I'm working in the Kimberley Mine," that did not necessarily mean he worked for a company called Kimberley Mine. He might have worked for Kimberley Central, or the French Company, or Standard, or one of the smaller interests that still held claims there. The mine was the physical hole in the ground; the companies were the owners of pieces of that hole. In 1886–87 the whole industry was therefore in the middle of a gigantic transition from hundreds of little claim-holders hacking away independently at the diamond-bearing ground, toward a handful of enormous corporations controlling entire mines. Underground mining was replacing the enormous open pits because the old workings were becoming dangerously deep; companies were sinking shafts and driving tunnels down into the pipes. At the same time, Cecil John Rhodes and Barney Barnato were consolidating ownership above ground. By 1886 Rhodes wasn't powerful enough to overcome other significant owners in Kimberley, although most of the other entrepreneurs believed amalgamation was good for diamonds — no-one wanted to be dominated by Rhodes — or each other. And Rhodes was seeking domination. While the majority of those in Kimberley scrabbled and scratched, the magnates were high on the hog. They frequented the Kimberley Club, launched by 74 well-heeled citizens who pledged 100 pounds each, a double storey structure that impressed as it rose from the flat Griqualand surrounds. Evenings were full of dinners and dances, black tie and evening dress abounded, awash in the blaze of the new electric lights, the first in South Africa, which twinkled inside the homes of the rich, and splashed along the streets. Men and women mingled, thronged and thrusted, the tuxedo dressed elites sat in their plush chairs in the Kimberly club, pressing the electric bells to call waiters who slid effortlessly across the plush velvet pile and Turkish carpets. Most evenings sitting side by side in the lounge were Cecil John Rhodes and his friend and co-shareholder Alfred Beit, sipping on their favourite tipple which was black velvet, a mixture of champaign and stout beer. Suitably fortified, they would dance, but let me hasten to add, not together, Rhodes with the plainest girl apparently while Beit, who was a short man, often sought out the tallest women. A weird vaudeville show and watched by a few sober enough to register irony. Alfred Beit was the key to what happened next because he had already drawn the attention of one of the most powerful capitalists in the world — Nathanial Natty Rothschild of Rothschild's bank in London. Beit wrote a letter of introduction for Rhodes, who sailed off to England where he met Natty Rothschild. The first meeting didn't start well. Rothschild was frosty.

And once you've survived enough Trojan Horses, you stop trusting gifts altogether. Every apology might have an agenda. Which is where we find ourselves. We've learned the language of peacemaking without living the virtues of peacemaking. We know the words: forgiveness, boundaries, accountability. We can even have ChatGPT write our apology texts. The problem is that it can give us the script but never the soul. Techniques, devoid of transformation, are just a bag of tricks. But Paul isn't only preaching about the manipulators out there. He warns us about the manipulator in here. When you've been manipulated, it gets easy to justify retaliation. Which is why he gives us the posture before he ever gets to the process. "Without the posture of Christ, peacemaking is no longer a practice that matures us, but a ploy to manipulate others." Ephesians splits right down the middle. Chapters 1 through 3 tell us what Christ has done. Chapter 4 opens with therefore. Peace has been received. Here is how peace gets practiced. Paul gives us the posture in four steps. But it isn't a staircase you climb up. It's steps you go down. Because ever since Genesis 3, humanity has been climbing. We climb for significance, for status, for control. And when someone hurts us, we don't want to move toward them. We'd rather tower over them. But reconciliation happens at eye level. Every virtue Paul names is another step down. The good news is not that we found a way up to God's level, but that God came down to ours. "Peace was made when God took the first step down. So it shouldn't surprise us that Paul's first instruction to peacemakers is to start coming down too."

Odysseus is the patron saint of the warrior mindset,  and its greatest cautionary tale. The Odyssey Wasn't Originally a Movie 《奥德赛》最初根本不是一部电影看《奥德赛》之前，首先要知道一件事：《奥德赛》最初既不是电影，也不是小说，而是一部 ancient Greek epic poem（古希腊史诗）。这部作品大约三千年前诞生，传统上被认为是( be traditionally attributed to )由古希腊诗人Homer（荷马）创作的。它也是今天依然被人们阅读的最古老的故事之一。而对于很多西方人来说，《奥德赛》并不是一部“突然出现的电影”，而是从小就听过、学过的经典故事。很多西方国家的孩子在学校里都会接触Homer以及《奥德赛》。这一点，其实很像中国孩子从小就会接触《西游记》。所以，当电影里出现Odysseus、Athena或者其他人物时，很多西方观众可能根本不需要电影重新介绍他们。They already know who they are（他们早就知道这些人物是谁了）。而这也正是一些中国观众看《奥德赛》时容易产生“信息差”的地方。02. Greek Mythology Is Everywhere 希腊神话，其实就在我们身边《奥德赛》背后的整个世界，都建立在一个非常重要的文化体系之上：Greek mythology（希腊神话）。这可不是一个只有《奥德赛》才会出现的东西。Greek mythology is everywhere in Western culture——books, movies, video games, even company names（书籍、电影、电子游戏，甚至公司名称）。《奥德赛》中会出现gods（众神）、goddesses（女神）、Titans（泰坦）、Cyclopes（独眼巨人）、Sirens（海妖），以及各种各样的神话生物和怪物。对于很多西方孩子来说，已经是文化常识(general knowledge)了。比如大家非常熟悉的运动品牌Nike，其实就来自希腊神话中的Nike——the goddess of victory（胜利女神）。再比如，我们英语里说的“地图册”是atlas。这个词同样来自希腊神话：Atlas是一个被惩罚、必须永远扛着天空的Titan（泰坦巨人）。所以，当你在英语世界里看到一些看似普通的单词、品牌名称或者文学表达（literary expressions）时，它们背后有时候藏着的，可能就是几千年前的希腊神话。所以，真正看懂《奥德赛》，有时候并不只是看懂剧情，而是要先打开这扇通往Greek mythology（希腊神话）的大门。03. Why Is It Called “Odyssey”? “Odyssey”为什么成了英语单词？除了是一部史诗的名字，odyssey这个词本身也已经进入了英语词典，成为了一个我们今天依然会使用的普通英语单词。它通常指的是：A long journey full of challenges and adventures（一次充满挑战和冒险的漫长旅程）。不过，odyssey和普通的journey（旅程）还是不太一样。Not every trip is an odyssey. An odyssey changes you.一次普通的旅行可能只是从A地去B地，但一段真正的odyssey，往往意味着你在这段旅程中经历了困难、挑战和意想不到的事情，最终也因此成为了一个不一样的人。所以，我们完全可以把这个词用在现实生活中。比如：Learning Chinese has been quite an odyssey.学习中文，就是一段漫长而充满挑战的旅程。又或者：Starting a business is an odyssey.创业，也可能是一场充满挑战的人生旅程。所以，当英语母语者听到odyssey这个词时，他们想到的往往不只是“旅行”，而是一段transformative journey（改变一个人的旅程）。而这其实也正是《奥德赛》这个故事最核心的含义之一：Odysseus经历的从来不只是一场漫长的旅途，他在这段旅程中不断面对危险、诱惑和选择，也在一次次经历中发生改变。04. Why Does The Odyssey Feel So Hard to Understand? 为什么很多人会觉得《奥德赛》难懂？很多人觉得《奥德赛》不好懂，还有一个非常重要的原因——里面出现的大量人物和生物，对很多中国观众来说可能非常陌生（unfamiliar）。但对西方观众来说，他们早就知道这些角色来自哪里。The Odyssey is not a superhero movie. It's based on Greek mythology(希腊神话).所以电影里的很多人物，并不是一个个突然出现的陌生角色，而是来自一个庞大的神话体系。比如：gods（众神）,goddesses（女神）,Titans（泰坦）,Cyclopes（独眼巨人）,Sirens（海妖）,以及各种各样的神话生物和怪物。而这也意味着，《奥德赛》里有很多情节，如果不了解这些文化背景(cultural background)，就很容易觉得：“这个人为什么突然出现？他为什么这么生气？他们为什么这么怕这个神？”但如果你知道这些人物背后的故事，就会发现，电影里的很多冲突其实都有自己的文化逻辑（Cultural Logic）。接下来，我们就来看看《奥德赛》里一个非常重要、却很容易被忽略的规则——Xenia。这个词甚至可以说是理解很多剧情的关键。05. Zeus' Law: The Most Important Rule “宙斯法则”到底是什么？如果说《奥德赛》里的怪物和冒险构成了故事的表面，那么rules（规则）则是理解这个故事非常重要的一层。其中有一条规则，我们可能第一次听说：Xenia。Xenia可以理解为Guest friendship（宾客之谊），也就是古希腊非常重要的sacred hospitality（神圣的待客之道）。在古希腊，陌生人来到你家，并不是简单地“客气一下”就够了，而应以神圣之礼相待 （be considered sacred），一个陌生人来到家中，主人应该先给他食物，让他休息、照顾好他，然后再询问：“你是谁？从哪里来？”也就是说，hospitality（待客之道）并不只是good manners（礼貌），而是一种神圣的责任。那么，为什么大家都必须遵守这套规则呢？因为在古希腊人的观念中，你根本不知道眼前这个陌生人是谁。Anyone could be sent by Zeus.也许他就是宙斯派来的客人。所以，如果你不好好招待客人，不仅仅是“没礼貌”，甚至可能是在冒犯（offend）众神之王。因此，这套规则有时也会被理解为Zeus's law（宙斯法则）。这也是为什么《奥德赛》里有一些冲突，看起来可能只是“主人为什么不让客人进来”“为什么一定要好好招待陌生人”，但放在古希腊文化背景中，这些行为的意义完全不一样。所以，下次再看《奥德赛》时，如果发现人物突然强调“客人”“招待”“食物”“庇护”这些事情，就要意识到：这背后可能不只是待客礼仪，而是Xenia在发挥作用。06. The Trojan Horse 特洛伊木马为什么这么有名？说到《奥德赛》背后的故事，还有一个几乎所有人都听过的名字：The Trojan Horse（特洛伊木马）。即使没有读过Greek mythology，很多人也听过这个故事。希腊人长期无法攻下特洛伊城，于是假装撤退（retreat），留下了一匹巨大的木马。特洛伊人以为这是希腊人留下的礼物，于是把木马搬进了城。然而到了晚上，躲在木马里的士兵偷偷出来，打开城门，最终帮助希腊人攻陷了特洛伊。这个故事之所以流传至今，是因为Trojan Horse早已经不只是一个神话故事，而成为了英语里的一个固定表达。如今，“特洛伊木马”一词指一种隐藏在看似无害（harmless）之物内部的危险事物。也就是说，某个东西表面上看起来完全无害，甚至像一份礼物，但里面却隐藏着危险，我们就可以把它比作一个Trojan Horse。最常见的例子可能就是电脑里的“木马病毒”。英语里直接叫：Trojan。因为这种恶意软件往往会伪装成正常的软件或文件，先骗你打开，然后偷偷进入电脑。所以，当你听到有人说：It's a Trojan Horse.他可能说的根本不是一匹木马，而是在提醒你：Be careful—there's something dangerous hiding inside.（小心，里面可能藏着危险。）07. It could be argued that Christopher Nolan has been remaking the Odyssey for his whole career, and his latest film revisits many of the themes of his earlier movies, as once again a male protagonist embarks on a desperate quest to recover a female love object. But, as Emily Wilson argues, while Homer's Odyssey might seem the perfect source material for Nolan, the ancient Greek poem also excels at many things the director isn't so good at, not least dialogue and characterisation. Wilson, who has translated both the Odyssey and the Iliad, joins Thomas Jones to talk through the new adaptation, discussing its echoes of Nolan's earlier films and his use of the Trojan Horse as a parable about wars built on lies. Corporate transhumanism represents a particular and concerning subset of transhumanist philosophy that differs significantly from earlier artistic and philosophical approaches to human enhancement. While early transhumanists like Neil Harbison, a color-blind artist who implanted a device to translate color frequencies into vibrations, pursued personal enhancement and expanded human experience, corporate transhumanism as practiced by companies like Neuralink focuses on technological integration with significant profit motives and control mechanisms. The discussion highlights how these corporate approaches position themselves as solving medical and cognitive problems while simultaneously creating dependency through terms of service, data mining, and token-based economic models. This represents a Trojan horse where the promise of enhanced capability masks the establishment of new forms of control and surveillance of human consciousness itself.4. The concept of legibility as a bureaucratic end goal rather than a means to an end explains much of the surveillance apparatus that has developed in Western societies, particularly in the United States since 9/11. Alsop describes how those in positions of power, wealth, and fame have a structural incentive to make everything around them legible and controllable while maintaining their own privacy and illegibility to external observation. This dynamic manifests in technologies like Palantir and in legal mechanisms like compelled silence through gag orders, which directly contradict constitutional principles of free speech. The drive for total legibility of populations appears to have no ultimate purpose beyond the accumulation of legibility itself, creating a recursive loop where surveillance and data collection become self-justifying activities that serve power structures rather than the populations they ostensibly protect.5. Human beings continuously generate enormous streams of metadata through their daily activities, creating what Avalos describes as evaporating against our own will into hundreds of RSS feeds for hundreds of corporations. This automatic data production occurs through basic activities like waking up, moving through space with smartphones and wearable devices, and interacting with digital platforms. The fundamental question that predates transhumanism but becomes more urgent within it is how individuals can own what they produce simply by existing and moving through the world. This data is captured through accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS systems, and countless other sensors that create comprehensive digital profiles without explicit consent or meaningful control by the individuals being monitored. The unilateral nature of this communication, where individuals broadcast data without receiving genuine value in return, has become so deeply embedded in modern infrastructure that it forms part of the taken-for-granted landscape of contemporary life.6. Platform lock-in and the inability to migrate digital identity across services creates a new category of loss that requires genuine grieving. Avalos describes how his experience with Instagram, which began as a personal visual diary before the Facebook acquisition, evolved into a situation where he cannot extract his creative work and social connections from the platform without significant loss. This phenomenon extends beyond mere inconvenience to touch on fundamental questions of identity and citizenship, as social media profiles increasingly determine real-world opportunities like visa applications and border crossings. The implications of digital footprints have become severe enough that individuals can be denied entry to countries based on algorithmic analysis of their online interactions, likes, and expressed beliefs. This creates a situation where people are worth exactly what their digital twin indicates they are worth, with no meaningful avenue for human appeal or nuanced self-representation.7. The future relationship between humans and technology requires a return to principles of sovereignty, local control, and open source development rather than dependence on corporate platforms and proprietary systems. Both Alsop and Avalos advocate for a do-it-yourself approach to technology that emphasizes ownership and control over personal tools and data. This includes avoiding closed systems like Neuralink unless they become open source and user-controlled, and prioritizing local execution of AI models over cloud-based services that create dependencies and enable surveillance. The conversation suggests that techno-optimism remains possible, but only from what Avalos calls the trenches, acknowledging the different relationship that people in the Global South and those outside centers of power have with technology. This grounded optimism recognizes the entanglement of beneficial and harmful aspects of technological development and maintains that human agency and creative freedom require conscious resistance to the convenience-at-all-costs model that has characterized recent technological adoption.
