CUJO is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience — including access to our CUJOPLEX Discord and reading group meetings — we recommend signing up for a paid subscription.Paid subscribers also get access to The Weather Report, a monthly episode series where we take stock of where the cultural winds are blowing and tell you what's rained into our brains. On our latest installment, we chat with Billboard editor Katie Bain, author of a new history of Coachella, about what the festival's 2026 line-up tells us about where culture is headed, the rise of anti-sellout discourse, and the AI industry's nostalgic, artisanal rebrand. Since our last episode, something historic happened: Zohran Kwame Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, marking the American left's most significant electoral victory since the Bernie movement took off in the 2010s. While his team will credit his win to bold, populist economic policies, there's no denying another factor at play: Zohran's extraordinary command of images. He grew up in a film-director household, rapped as Young Cardamom before pivoting to politics, and hired a crew of indie filmmakers to create a video campaign that unfolded like a documentary love letter to the NYC of halal carts, bodega cats, and ordinary working people. Zohran's media fluency is also why people are calling him the Left's answer to Trump. Which all raises some big questions: Is politics in the information economy becoming indistinguishable from theatrical world-building? And what does that mean for our offline lives? This week's guest, writer and artist Gideon Jacobs, has thought about these questions for years. A former creative director at Magnum Photos, child actor, and native New Yorker, Gideon has explored our cultural relationship to images in outlets like The New Yorker, The New York Times, Artforum, and Los Angeles Review of Books, for whom he penned an excellent piece earlier this year called “Player One and Main Character,” which contends that political reality, post-Trump and post-Musk, is beginning to bend to the rules of fiction. We talk about the aesthetic politics of the Zohran campaign and what it tells us about what successful counter-programming to MAGA's vision of America might look like. We also discuss what Gideon's study of the role of images in ancient cultures and religions can tell us about navigating the image world of the present, how the rise of populism (on both the left and the right) is inextricable from our current technological moment, and whether Zohran's victory marks the start of a political future more grounded in material conditions—or the next phase of the image arms race.Follow Gideon on InstagramRead Gideon:“Player One and Main Character” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Trump l'Oeil” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“Thou shalt not make images—but what if AI does?” (Document Journal)“Aliens” (The Drift)Additional reading:“Selling Zohran” by Corey Atad (Defector) This is a public episode. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, in chapter two of "American Marxism," titled "Breeding Mobs," it explains how mass movements devour individual identity and uniqueness, rendering people indistinguishable while assigning group identities based on race, age, or income to foster class distinctions and divisions.  These movements attract disenchanted, disaffected, and maladjusted individuals who blame external factors like the system or others for their conditions, lured by utopian promises and criticisms of society, where improving their lot ties to the cause and disparaging the successful becomes a tactic to instill meaning and self-worth.  Ultimately, these movements rely on deceit, propaganda, intimidation, and force, leading to scapegoating, violence, and totalitarianism.  Just think of figures like Bernie Sanders, AOC, Nick Fuentes, Steve Bannon, Alex Jones, Tucker Carlson, and their supporters. Also, Democrats are trying to insinuate that Trump spent significant time with Virginia Giuffre and possibly engaged in untoward behavior. However, Giuffre herself stated in 2016 that Trump was never involved in any improper conduct with her and that she witnessed nothing inappropriate. Democrats redacting Giuffre's name in leaked emails was intentional to fabricate a scandal, similar to the Russia hoax. Later, Gov Greg Abbott calls in and explains that he shut down the proposed EPIC center in the Dallas area, an Islamic-only development, through a new law that bans no-go zones, prohibits discriminatory land sales or rentals based on Islam, mandates disputes be resolved under Texas laws and courts rather than Sharia law, and empowers the Attorney General to close such projects. He also outlined a multi-point plan to make housing more affordable by reducing property taxes. Finally, Professor Emeritus John Ellis calls in and argues that to save universities from radical political zealots who have replaced knowledge promotion with fringe ideology indoctrination, urgent reform is essential, as evidenced by radicalized graduates influencing society, such as New York's communist mayor. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the Democratic Party is being internally devoured by Marxism and Islamism, ideologies foreign to America's founding principles. These forces, power-hungry and seeking centralized control, mask their hatred for the country as righteousness, liberation, equality, and affordability, while spreading rapidly and replacing the party's base and leadership.  In response, a fascistic reaction emerges on the radical right by grifters like podcasters and influencers who gain fame and wealth promoting it. Both Marxists and fascists seek to destroy American institutions—the former to replace them, the latter claiming they fail—leading to dwindling support for the Declaration, Constitution, and founders. The Republican Party resists this fascistic right, albeit insufficiently, whereas the Democratic Party, having unleashed and failed to control these forces, is now becoming the Marxist left. Also, Rep Mike Lawler calls in and explains that the Democrat government shutdown was idiotic, aimed at fighting Trump and appeasing their far-left base through political leverage rather than benefiting Americans or addressing healthcare. He argues that Obamacare's affordability relies solely on federal subsidies like enhanced ACA tax credits, which he is open to extending for one year to enable fundamental fixes, as the program has driven up costs over 15 years, destroyed the system through ineffective consolidation, and failed to achieve economies of scale.  Afterward, UC Berkeley student radicals from groups including Students Organizing for Liberation, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Young Democratic Socialists of America organized protests against a Turning Point event. These protesters are anti-Israel, anti-US radicals linked to Soros operations and leftist figures like Bernie Sanders and AOC, who seek to overthrow the country rather than engage in civil debate. Finally, we thank all who served in the military, although thanks can never be enough. Veterans are a unique and shrinking breed who deserve appreciation for their sacrifices, with the country owing them a great debt. Learn more about your ad choices. Senate Democrats blast White House over ‘sweetheart' AI data center deals

Senate Democrats are ratcheting up pressure on the White House over artificial intelligence data centers and the surging utility costs that have accompanied their nationwide buildout. In a letter sent Monday to Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, five senators blasted the Trump administration for the “sweetheart deals” it has made with Big Tech companies on data centers, and its “reckless abandonment” of consumers as their electricity bills soar. The letter, which was led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., states: “Since his second inauguration, President Trump has cozied up to Meta, Google, Oracle, OpenAI, and other Big Tech companies, fast-tracking and pushing for the buildout of power-hungry data centers across the country.” According to the letter — which was also signed by Democratic Sens. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont — national power consumption from data centers could jump from 5% to 12% within three years, and even the White House noted in its AI Action Plan that “technological advancements of AI are increasing pressures on the grid.” At the same time, the second Trump administration has seemingly traded in the all-of-the-above approach to energy sources pursued during the president's first term for a decidedly anti-renewables bent that the senators said has “supercharged this cost-of-living crisis by making it harder to increase and diversify sources of household electricity sources.” The Department of Veterans Affairs' push to modernize decades-old systems faced a technical issue earlier this year, delaying education benefits payments for tens of thousands of students at the start of the school year. A group of veterans' service organizations, including the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), highlighted the issue this week, telling reporters that the technical glitch occurred in August, when the VA began converting benefits claims from its legacy system to a new processing system for Chapter 35 Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance. The VA launched its initiative to modernize the GI Bill process in 2022, and the Digital GI Bill platform was set to be fully operational by April 2024 but faced its own delays last year. A part of the multi-billion-dollar initiative involves overhauling multiple legacy systems, including those related to the education benefits process. Ashlynne Haycock-Lohmann, the director of government and legislative affairs at TAPS, told FedScoop in an interview that the veterans' service community welcomes the changes to decades-old systems, but the timing around the school year could present risks. The deal would: Reopen the government until January 30. Fund programs like SNAP (food stamps), veterans benefits, and other federal services. Reverse layoffs of federal workers and block further firings until January 30. Commit to a future vote on extending Obamacare subsidies. Impact on Air Travel there are severe flight cancellations and delays due to air traffic controller shortages. FAA ordered airlines to cut flights by 4%, with Delta canceling nearly 500 flights and United following similar measures. President Trump ordered all air traffic controllers back to work and threatened pay docking for absentees, while promising $10,000 bonuses for those who worked through the shutdown. Political Dynamics Democrats are deliberately prolonging the shutdown for leverage. Internal Democratic Party civil war: Criticism of Chuck Schumer’s leadership. Is There Still Room for John Fetterman in Today's Democratic Party?

    Honestly with Bari Weiss

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2025 81:18

Who owns the future of the Democratic Party? That's the question on everyone's mind since last Tuesday night—when the richest city in America elected 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as its mayor. You can see Mamdani's win as a one-off—a charismatic contender facing a rival mired in controversy. But the other way to see it is as emblematic of something larger: a sign about the state—and future—of the left.  Here was a candidate promising to solve the affordability crisis with free childcare, free buses, rent freezes, and even government-run grocery stores. And despite the socialist bent, most establishment Democrats fell in line to support him—from Kathy Hochul and Hakeem Jeffries to Barack Obama, who reportedly called Mamdani to offer himself as a sounding board. If that's true—if Mamdani is the new standard-bearer for Democrats in the way Obama once was—then where does that leave someone like Senator John Fetterman? The Pennsylvania senator didn't just withhold his endorsement—he went so far as to say that socialism is not the future of the Democratic Party. It's an interesting stance, given that just a few years ago, Fetterman ran a progressive Senate campaign focused on reforming criminal justice,  legalizing marijuana, and raising the minimum wage. He was backed by AOC and Bernie Sanders. The right even called him a “silver-spoon socialist.” Then came his near-fatal stroke on the day of his Democratic primary—followed by calls from both sides to drop out. Instead, he stayed in the race and won, flipping a GOP Senate seat. Since coming to Congress, Fetterman has stood out—and not just because he's six-foot-eight. He's shown strong support for Israel, a departure from many in his party. He's said Democrats mishandled border security under Biden. He praised the president for his peace deal in Gaza—and even met with him in Mar-a-Lago. He's also publicly blamed Democrats for the government shutdown, saying: “I follow country, then party.” He refused to “play chicken with the food security of 42 million Americans,” and voted 15 times with Republicans to reopen Washington. On Sunday night, the Senate finally voted to reopen the governement—but only after 40 days of missed paychecks, travel chaos, and millions at risk of losing SNAP benefits. It was just the latest litmus test for Democrats, highlighting the divide between the centrists and the progressives—between, for lack of better words, the Fetterman wing and the Mamdani wing. And now, Democrats may have to decide which impulse to run on—in 2026, and in 2028.Today, Bari asks John Fetterman about his decision to speak out against his own party; his recent dinner with Donald Trump—and the backlash that followed; the shutdown and whether he believes the Democratic Party is heading in the right direction; and finally, his new book Unfettered, which chronicles his journey to the Senate, his stroke, his battle with depression, and his time in office. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Clay's New Studio! Clay debuts his new studio, complete with a treadmill that he'll be walking on during the show to try stay in shape. He jokes that he might have to change his background though because it resembles a penis. Clay and Buck argue that the shutdown was a strategic move by Democrats to sow chaos and emotional unrest ahead of the elections but ultimately backfired. The hosts emphasize that the disruption to air travel—delayed flights, unpaid air traffic controllers, and public frustration—was a tipping point that forced Democrats to retreat. President Donald Trump’s response to the shutdown is spotlighted, including his call for bonuses for air traffic controllers who continued working and criticism of those who took time off. The show frames this as a leadership moment, contrasting Trump’s decisive stance with what they describe as Democrat disarray. Clay and Buck also dive into the internal conflict within the Democratic Party, noting that eight Democrat senators broke ranks, leading to what they call a “civil war” within the party. Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders are both criticized, with Sanders accused of using emotional manipulation and class warfare rhetoric to rally support. The show mocks the Democrats’ messaging around “Trumpism” and their failure to deliver tangible results from the shutdown. Most Hated Industry in America Clay and Buck argue that the Affordable Care Act has led to skyrocketing premiums, reduced quality of care, and a broken system that benefits insurance companies more than patients. The discussion includes commentary on SNAP benefits, obesity-related healthcare costs, and the lack of price transparency in medical services. The hosts call for market-driven reforms and accuse Democrats of subsidizing the most hated industry in America—health insurance. Healthcare Realities A major segment focuses on healthcare policy and the future of Obamacare, with in-depth criticism of how Democrats have handled healthcare reform. The hosts argue that the Affordable Care Act has empowered insurance companies and failed to deliver meaningful improvements, potentially setting the stage for a push toward a single-payer system. A retired healthcare executive calls in to offer a free-market solution, emphasizing the need to reduce government control and restore physician autonomy. In a cultural pivot, the show covers President Trump’s surprise appearance at an NFL game, where he flew over in Air Force One and joined the Fox Sports broadcast booth. Trump’s commentary on football, his high school playing days, and interactions with players like Drew Brees are discussed as emblematic of his growing cultural acceptance. The hosts highlight how athletes, including the Detroit Lions, celebrated Trump with the now-viral “Trump dance,” signaling a shift in how young men and sports figures view the president. Leftwing Bitchiness Reflections on the end of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, with Clay and Buck criticizing Democrats for what they describe as a performative and damaging political stunt. The hosts argue that the shutdown achieved little beyond public frustration and economic disruption. The conversation shifts to pop culture as Kim Kardashian’s repeated attempts to pass the California bar exam are discussed. While acknowledging her billionaire status, the hosts commend her persistence and ambition, contrasting it with what they perceive as a lack of humility and gratitude from former First Lady Michelle Obama. A significant portion of the hour is dedicated to a critical examination of Michelle Obama’s public statements, her Princeton thesis, and her perceived victimhood narrative. The hosts argue that the Obama family received unprecedented media grace and support, especially compared to other presidential families, including the Bushes, Clintons, and the current First Family under President Donald Trump. Chris Cuomo breaks down what 2025's off-year elections reveal about America's political realignment — and why he calls it the real war for the country's future. Voters across the country sent a clear message: they're tired of chaos, exhausted by extremes, and demanding something that actually works. In New York City, former Governor Andrew Cuomo lost the mayor's race to Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, a progressive voice from the same populist current that produced AOC and Bernie Sanders. Chris says that upset is part of a broader reckoning inside both parties — between MAGA, the politics of anger and grievance, and MEGA, the growing number of Americans weary of outrage and craving stability. And as both sides look ahead to the 2026 midterms, these results may be a preview of which message will win: rage, or results. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (11/05/2025): 3:05pm- On Tuesday night, Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli in their New Jersey gubernatorial race. With 95% of the vote reported, Sherrill leads by 13%—56.2 to 43.2%. Prior to election day, most pollsters—including Trafalgar—published data showing the race would be significantly closer. What happened? Is NJ, simply put, just a blue state? Did President Donald Trump's absence from the ticket depress Republican turnout? 3:30pm-Listeners call into the show and voice their frustrations with last night's results. One caller notes that Democrats managed to get 60% of their voters to the polls—but Republicans managed a mere 54%. Is New Jersey now east coast California, as one listener suggests? 3:40pm- Rich continues to take calls—with a listener explaining that she knew NJ was progressive, but she had no idea the state was THIS deep blue. Others said they are still “stunned” by the results. Plus, people are disappointed that Larry Krasner won another term as district attorney of Philadelphia. What were voters thinking? 4:05pm- Rich keeps the phone lines open. Was candidate quality an issue? Unlikely. Jack Ciattarelli won all 21 counties across the state of New Jersey during the Republican primary. Why did 30% of Republican voters who cast their ballots for Trump in 2024 not show up? 4:10pm- Did the Trump administration's decision to halt federal funding for the Gateway Tunnel project between New Jersey and New York help Mikie Sherrill? Should President Trump have held an in-person rally for Ciattarelli in NJ? Rich notes, if we don't fix the problem now—we're in major trouble heading into the 2026 midterm elections. 4:25pm- A listener points out that young female voters overwhelmingly voted for Mikie Sherrill. Can Republicans reverse this trend? 4:30pm- First, the GOP had to deal with the “Never Trumpers”—but now the Republican Party's biggest problem appears to be the “Only Trumpers,” voters who will only show up to vote if President Donald Trump himself is on the ballot. 5:05pm- On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders hilariously hijacked a press conference held by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. One listener says Sanders has been “emboldened” by socialist Zohran Mamdani's win in New York City. 5:30pm- Are all Trump voters also Republican voters? One caller suggests that Trump voters are not emotionally invested in the rest of the party—and we shouldn't ever expect them to show up for an election where President Trump's name isn't on the ballot. 5:45pm- Was yesterday the worst polling disaster since 2016? 5:50pm- Following Zohran Mamdani's election win, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez said the “Democratic Party cannot last much longer by denying the future” of democratic-socialism. 6:05pm- Rich celebrates his 11th year on 1210 WPHT! 6:10pm- Linda Kerns—Attorney & Pennsylvania Election Integrity Counsel for the Republican National Committee and Donald Trump—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap Election Day. Plus, she attempts to cheer up Rich! 6:15pm- In her victory speech, New Jersey governor-elect Mikie Sherrill baselessly accused President Trump of “running a worldwide extortion racket.” 6:30pm- Matt Rooney—Founder of SaveJersey.com, State Director of the America First Policy Institute of New Jersey, & host of The Matt Rooney Show on 1210 WPHT (Saturday's 7pm to 10pm)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap Election Day in NJ.
