For today's episode, I am joined by David Seaman of Alpha Cygni Asset Management for a conversation with two mavericks, an entrepreneur and an investor. Angus Thirwell is the co-founder and CEO of Hotel Chocolat and was on Episode 4 in December 2021. Angus has just completed the sale of Hotel Chocolat to Mars for a value of £534m and has decided to roll most of his stake in the company into the Mars family structure as he sees an increased opportunity for the brand to grow under its new ownership.  Gary Channon is the founder and CIO of Phoenix Asset Management with a disciplined value style of investing detailed in previous episodes with James Wilson. Gary heads a team that manages UK-listed investment vehicles, Aurora Investment Trust and Castelnau.   We are treated to a master class in how Angus's careful stewardship of his premium branded chocolate and the culture required to develop its full potential led him to his partnership with one of the world's biggest and most successful family businesses.   And how Gary's disciplined approach to research and valuation delivered a stunning return by acquiring a 15% stake in Hotel Chocolat after its post-pandemic setback.  We cover a lot of ground and discuss the health of the UK stock market, how to think about investing in consumer-facing businesses and how failing and learning from mistakes is an important part of developing a business whether in premium chocolate or asset management.  Gary also talks about taking the funeral business Dignity private and this latest addition to the portfolio, Churchill China.       Please enjoy our conversation with the mavericks, Angus Thirwell and Gary Channon. Brought to you by Progressive Equity Research.

How JAMES CADBURY Launched TWO Successful CHOCOLATE Start Up Brands | EP:14 Brand New Taste

Brand New Taste

With such an iconic name, it's no surprise that James Cadbury is obsessed with chocolate.  As you have probably guessed, James' great-great-Grandfather was one of the brothers that founded the now illustrious Cadbury's brand.  Growing up just down the road from the legendary Bournville site, James had an early fascination with chocolate from a young age. Despite beginning his journey in finance after university, he soon realized that his heart was elsewhere—immersed in the world of chocolate. With a desire to make his mark on the industry and having supported several start ups, James took the plunge, investing his hard-earned savings into his first chocolate venture, Love Cocoa.  While navigating the rollercoaster of start-up life and having great success with his first brand, it also became clear that the nation's growing love for plant-based milk chocolate was growing. With an opportunity to be the first chocolate in the UK market with oat milk, James launched his second brand, HIP. His team developed a product that was a true game-changer to the category, a great-tasting, dairy-free chocolate like the UK had never seen before. It skyrocketed to success and hasn't looked back since.  In this episode, James takes us behind the scenes, sharing the challenges of running two start-up brands, along with the dilemmas of whether to put his name on the packaging and the pros and cons that came with it. He also dives into the critical focus on sustainability for both of his brands, drawing inspiration from his pioneering ancestors. James explains why it was imperative for Hip to breathe new life into the plant-based chocolate category and stand out on the store shelves. If you enjoy this episode, please consider subscribing. If you have any suggestions for future episode topics, please email them to hello@tastehead.comFollow Brandt and Micah:https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandt-maybury/https://www.linkedin.com/in/micah-carr-hill-34a91811/Visit https://www.tastehead.com/ to learn moreFollow James:https://www.linkedin.com/in/cadbury/?originalSubdomain=ukLove Cocoa InstagramHIPInstagramLinks Mentioned:Cadbury - https://www.cadbury.co.uk/Property Moose - https://propertymoose.co.uk/Hotel Chocolat - https://www.hotelchocolat.comTony's - https://tonyschocolonely.com/uk/enDragons Den (James Cadbury Episode) - YouTubeMidday Squares - https://www.middaysquares.com/Shoe Dog - https://www.waterstones.com/book/shoe-dog/phil-knight/Kind Bag -  https://www.kindbag.co

The results were illuminating, and today Hazel will share with us how she uses the connection between flavor and color to help people better understand what they're tasting in their favorite chocolate.Chocolate and chocolate makers mentioned in this episode include La Iguana Chocolate, Mission Cupuaçu 70%, Hotel Chocolat, and Karuna Chocolate. In this episode we discussed Bean to Barstool Episode 01: Personal Flavor Vocabularies, Episode 16: Cultural Beer Language with Dr. J., and Episode 36: Painting Flavor with Artist Katie Clark Gabbard. The music for this episode is from the song “Umbrella” by my dear friend, indie folk musician Anna ps. You can find out more about Anna's music in the show notes or at her website annapsmusic.com, where you can also get in touch to book her to play at your brewery or other establishment.Hazel Lee is the Creator of Taste With Colour®: The Chocolate Tasting Flavour Map, an international chocolate judge, home bean to bar chocolate maker and cocoa adventurer. She studied Food Science at Leeds University and currently works full time as a Liquid Development Manager for Fever-Tree. Hazel spends her free time judging chocolate awards, painting cacao pods, taking part in chocolate events across the world and, of course, eating plenty of fine chocolate!

Having launched in London in 2004, the company now has more than 80 shops in the UK, as well as cafés and restaurants. Two years after establishing the business, entrepreneur Angus and his business partner Peter Harris bought The Rabot Estate in Saint Lucia, where Angus has led the rejuvenation of the island's oldest cocoa plantation, kick-starting a ‘cocoa renaissance' in the process through the innovative Engaged Ethics Cocoa Programme. The stunning setting of the plantation also inspired the opening of the boutique Boucan hotel and restaurant on the Estate, which fully opened in February 2012. A big year for Hotel Chocolat, it also marked a move into Europe with the opening of two stores in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, the launch of beauty range Cocoa Juvenate and the opening of Roast + Conch in London, an entirely new cocoa concept.Angus eats chocolate every day and approves every single recipe.—Thanks for watching!SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR MORE TIPS—WebsiteInstagramTik TokFacebookTwitterLinkedIn—LISTEN TO THE PODCAST!SpotifyApple—Who Is Matt Haycox? - Click for BADASS TrailerAs an entrepreneur, investor, funding expert and mentor who has been building and growing businesses for both myself and my clients for more than 20 years, my fundamental principles are suitable for all industries and businesses of all stages and size.I'm constantly involved in funding and advising multiple business ventures and successful entrepreneurs. My goal is to help YOU achieve YOUR financial success! Join them for an hour of generally uninformed, irrelevant chat - where they discuss topics such as being an accidental Peeping Tom, sleeping in the same room as Mother Teresa, and getting shouted at by Santa. Stephen is an openly gay, cruise ship magician - and is proud to be at the front of that much underrepresented part of society. He is often heard regaling anecdotes such as how he found himself as a performer on a swingers cruise, his lowest life moment being with Paul Daniel's son at a patisserie in Brazil, and how he tried to blend in at an Australian dive bar. In hindsight, the floral shirt and exposed ankles were a mistake. Ryan has been Stephen's best friend since they first met at 11 years old and shared a communal love for the anecdote. He is the marketing manager for an afternoon tea company, is yet to attend a none catastrophic yoga class, and once got heckled by an eleven year old for being too scared to go on a water slide. He's also openly hetero, although his constant praise of ABBA could lead you to believe otherwise. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dodgingdeath/message

Listeners with a sweet tooth will likely already be familiar with the Hotel Chocolat brand. Started in 1993, it has charmed UK shoppers with its meticulously produced chocolate and is now one of our most beloved chocolatiers. As the business prepares for one of its busiest times of the year, and what promises to be a very different ‘Covid' Christmas, it's also back on our TV screens this autumn, providing behind the scenes access into the running of the UK's biggest chocolate maker. In this special episode of The Interview Series, Hotel Chocolat CEO and Co-founder, Angus Thirlwell, joins Martin Popplewell in conversation to talk about the business response to the global pandemic and ‘Retail Darwinism', the growing importance of online sales and its increasing global appeal. They say ‘life is like a box of chocolates', and that has never felt truer. A year that started full of promise has, well, turned out a little differently than we hoped—to put it mildly. For many in retail, profits may have melted in 2020 as a result of the pandemic. But at Hotel Chocolat, they remain positive about the future, with gifting and online sales protecting it from the worst of the impact on physical retail.

Our Crisis Talks series explores how project managers are adapting and pivoting to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this episode, Emma De Vita (editor of APM's Project journal) speaks to Hannah Gledhill, senior project manager at Hotel Chocolat. The British chocolatier has small project team focused primarily on product development. Just prior to lockdown, it had begun a process of transformation, working closely with the Kaizen Institute to foster a culture of continuous improvement and greater efficiency. That commitment to transformation has continued throughout lockdown, despite the mounting challenges, as Hannah explains. Hotel Chocolat experienced the same initial challenges as many businesses – unfamiliarity with virtual technology and practices, and a period of uncertainty around which projects would be affected and how. However, as Hannah explains, the team was already geared up to go through “an element of pain” as it kick-started the Kaizen transformation to become a slicker operation. They hadn't bargained on a pandemic, perhaps, but the period of uncertainty has provided a test of their new culture. Listen now to hear how Hannah and her team emerged from the initial crisis management phase and kept the nation happy in lockdown through the medium of chocolate.
