SUMMARY:Our guests on this episode of Songcraft are Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, best known for co-writing and producing nearly every Janet Jackson hit. They've worked with a who's who of artists, earning them 26 Billboard #1 R&B hits, 16 Billboard #1 pop hits, more Producer of the Year Grammy nominations than anyone in history, and a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. We'll chat with them about their varied career, and their new first-ever album under their own names, entitled Volume One. PART ONE:Fan mail and the hardest job in the world.PART TWO:Scott and Paul chat about the idea of the celebrity producer, and how Jam & Lewis might have set a new mold. PART THREE:Our in-depth interview with Jimmy Jam & Terry LewisABOUT JAM & LEWISWith 26 Billboard #1 R&B hits and 16 Billboard #1 pop hits to their credit, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are perhaps the most influential and successful songwriting and production duo in modern music history. With a total of 41 Top 10 hits in the US, Jimmy and Terry were named ASCAP Songwriters of the Year a record-breaking nine times. They are perhaps best known for their work with Janet Jackson, beginning with the Control album, which earned the duo a Grammy for Producer of the Year. Between 1986 and 1994 they scored thirteen #1 songs with Janet on either the R&B or pop chart, including “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” “Control,” “Let's Wait Awhile,” “Miss You Much,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Escapade” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” “That's the Way Love Goes,” “Any Time, Any Place,” and “Again,” which earned Jimmy, Terry, and Janet an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Jimmy and Terry got their start as musicians with Morris Day and the Time, the Prince-produced band whose biggest hit was the Jam and Lewis-penned “Jerk Out.” They made the transition to a successful songwriting and production team working with the S.O.S. band, which landed a #2 R&B hit with “Just Be Good to Me.” From there, they made their mark on pop and R&B hits for decades to come. In addition to their work with Jackson, the duo wrote and produced the #1 pop singles “Human” by Human League, “Romantic” by Karyn White, “Thank God I Found You” by Mariah Carey, and the Boyz II Men singles “On Bended Knee” and “4 Seasons of Loneliness.” Additional R&B chart toppers include “Encore” by Cheryl Lynn, “Fake” by Alexander O'Neal, “Everything I Miss at Home” by Cherelle, “Sensitivity” by Ralph Tresvant, and the Johnny Gill singles “Rub You the Right Way” and “Wrap My Body Tight.” Other highlights from their catalog include New Edition's “If It Isn't Love” and “I'm Still in Love With You,” “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige, Robert Palmer's hit pop cover of their Cherelle single “I Didn't Mean to Turn You On,” and recordings by Gladys Knight & The Pips, Barry White, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Usher, Spice Girls, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Sting, Elton John, Beyonce, Rihanna, Rod Stewart, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, and many others.Always versatile, the duo has earned Grammy awards for Best R&B Album for Chaka Kahn's Funk This, Best Gospel Song for Yolanda Adams' “Be Blessed,” and Best Dance Recording for Janet Jackson's #1 pop and R&B hit “All For You.” Additional Jackson hits that were written and produced with Jam and Lewis include the Janet and Michael Jackson hit “Scream” and the #1 singles “Together Again,” “I Get Lonely,” “Doesn't Really Matter,” and the Nelly duet “Call On Me.”In total the team has earned over 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond album certifications from the RIAA, have received more Producer of the Year Grammy nominations than anyone in history, earned the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They've recently released their first album under their own names, which is called Volume One.

Welcome back for part 2 of this deep dive into the work of Janet Jackson, focusing on her All For You tour. Fuelled by an exciting mix of being in the same room to record the podcast for the first time since lockdowns started, midweek nutroast and gin, the pair go in on this heady brew of a gig. Janet Jackson is one of the world’s most significant pop music artists, but as Becca and Nick discuss she also remains one of the most mysterious, and maligned. The duo consider Janet Jackson’s cultural significance, her impact and legacy, as well as how the gig is constructed and performed. The duo consider whether this seemingly mismatching range of influences and elements on display in the show work together, particularly with some rather eye-opening s&m based choreography. As always there are delightfully funny tangents, this time including the perils of audience participation, and inspired by Janet's phenomenal physique in this show, failed attempts to get abs. Join Nick and Becca for another joyous podcast for those who love music, concerts, and comedy chat.
Join performers and live music lovers Rebecca and Nick for a deep dive into a seminal gig by a major cultural figure. In this 2 part episode the duo explore and discuss Janet Jackson and her All For You tour. And for the first time in Gig It Up podcast history, the pair were able to record in the same room! Janet Jackson is one of the world’s most significant pop music artists, but as Becca and Nick discuss she also remains one of the most mysterious, and maligned. This concert finds Janet in her prime, and in a playful mood, mixing surprisingly raunchy S&M with circuseque pixies. The pair discuss Janet Jackson’s cultural significance, her impact and legacy, as well as how the gig is constructed and performed. The duo consider whether this seemingly mismatching range of influences and elements work together. Also on the cards in part one; a drinking game to go alongside watching The Crown, and the perils of accidentally falling into a London canal.

Richard Skipper sits down to chat with John Meyer to discuss Judy Garland. John Meyer's songs have been performed by Shirley Bassey, Lily Tomlin, Madeline Kahn, Eartha Kitt, Linda Lavin and, most prominently, Judy Garland. His memoir, Heartbreaker, (Kensington, 2006), details the dramatic eight weeks he spent with Garland. In October of 1968, John met Judy Garland, then at the tail end of her career. She embraced both John and his song, I'd Like to Hate Myself in the Morning. The pair embarked on a tempestuous romance, at the end of which Judy performed four of John's numbers on national TV, including the ballad It's All For You and the melancholy Christmas song, After the Holidays. John detailed the adventure in a memoir, Heartbreaker. Holidays was subsequently recorded by Margaret Whiting and Paula West. Linda Eder performs It's All For You in her act as well. https://www.amazon.com/Heartbreaker-Memoir-Garland-John-Meyer/dp/0806527544

Today's episode is about why do some performing artists thrive while others spend years struggling to breakthrough. I've worked with hundreds of performing artists and the competitive edge for many has been that they have a clear message of who they are and what they stand for. And they know how to communicate that to connect with people. Talent is not enough. If you think about your favorite musicians, actors, dancers, I'm sure that you love them for more than just their talent. You are attracted to their image or personality, or you connect to the personal stories and experiences that they've shared. For example, I have been a fan of Janet Jackson for as long as I can remember. I watched her acting on Good Times, Different Strokes and Fame, all before her recording career took off with Control. Even when she was too shy to express herself through words. She told us who she was with every song and performance. She's a strong, independent woman who gives the best “Don't mess with me attitude” in many of her songs and performances.I admire her for being open about struggling with self-esteem issues, her weight and experiencing depression and domestic abuse. And whenever people started to count her out, she would come back stronger than ever. She gives an incredible acting performance in Why Did I Get Married Too? where she was open about the fact that she was filming that movie. When Michael Jackson died. She said that when she returned to set that she still hadn't really had the complete breakdown about losing her brother. But she brought all of that built up anger and emotion out in that scene. And again, she told us who she was through her art.And look at her now. In the last few years, she's won every Legend and Icon Award out there, including being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. All while becoming a mother at age 50! And touring the world was sold-out arenas.Of course, I love listening to her music, watching her sing, dance and act. And I've been known to study and attempt to dance the choreography from “Nasty,” “If,” “All For You,” “Feedback,” “Made For Now” and more. Recently I commissioned an oil painting of her to have on my wall for inspiration. It is a strong beautiful image of her in a simple white t-shirt, sparkling diamond choker necklace and long leather gloves with the word power on them. That is Janet to me. Strong, beautiful and powerful. I look at it and say, “You're right Janet, I'm going to go kick ass in my T-shirt and Swarovski jewelry. [Okay, I don't have the diamonds yet whatever,] and nothing's gonna stop me.” She gives me strength. As a performer, I'm sure you desire to have an audience that feels that way about you. But how will you express all of that? How will you express all that you are to attract loyal fans and industry supporters. There are many books, courses, consultants and resources available on the entertainment industry. However, most skip the foundation work of connecting to your true identity and life's purpose. In my 15 years as an entertainment publicist, I saw countless artists and performers struggling to build a career in the arts. I was inspired to become a certified life entrepreneur and creativity coach so that I could walk artists through the process that I knew was the missing link in their plans. So now, through coaching, I help musicians, actors, and dancers create and grow and authentic personal brand in order to attract loyal fans and industry supporters, without feeling overwhelmed or doubting themselves. If you want to generate bigger opportunities, I can guide you and communicating your skills, values, and personality to propel you to the next level.I've developed a three-phase 12 step process that I utilize to coach artists and performers to thrive in the arts. I'm going to tell you about the 12 steps and explain the benefits of each and if you're interested in having a free coaching session with me to see if we're a fit to work together, I have an offer for you at the end.Full details at http://singdanceactthrive.com/031 So to my offer, I have given myself the challenge to give away 30 free coaching sessions in 30 days to be of service to as many artists as possible. It's a chance for you to pick my brain on any questions that you may have. And we'll do a little exploration of what you really want. So if you're interested, visit Diane foy.com/booking and grab one of the spots. My challenge ends on December 12. So if you are listening to this at a later date, you can always contact me to be on the waiting list for the next time I have openings.

The year is 2001, April to be exact. The game show revival had begun with Who Wants to Be A Millionaire and the Weakest Link. Janet Jackson was #1 in the charts with what was described as a frothy butt shaker "All For You". Join Pauly B, Tim "The Summersuit", and their guest of honor...EFREN, as they relive all the events building to the main event - Wrestlemania 17. Efren provides first hand experience as he was actually in attendance for the event that many consider to be the best Wrestlemania of them all.
Jen McGlone is back as Erin Muroski's guest on this episode of Final Rose Material! They discuss the Demi/Christian sitch and why it's great and also a little awful, the JPJ of it all, how Derek bridges the gap of sexualities, crotch smudging, JPJ completely losing all his fans, Caelynn's resilience and a very terrifying wedding cake topper. ALL FOR YOU, Bachelor Nation!

Who remembers the song by Sister Hazel, “All For You”? I grew up listening to this band and all those memories came flooding back when we attended The Coalition for the Homeless, “Hearts of Gold” benefit! This platinum selling band, Sister Hazel originated in our very own back yard in Gainesville, FL. Ken Block will share how Sister Hazel has endured 25 years of music, relationships, and continues to make a difference.
In 2001, Janet Jackson was on top of the pop music world. Her blockbuster album All For You had just made her the first artist in the history of music to produce five consecutive number one albums in a row, her singles were making millions of people happy, and a mere live television performance on HBO brought in 12 million viewers alone. And then? A "wardrobe malfunction" saw Janet blacklisted from nearly every avenue that had once championed her.In this episode of Discography, Marc With a C continues his trek though all of Janet's canonical albums taking on All For You and the slept-on Damita Jo, while making an unfortunate, but necessary, detour away from the music and into tabloid territory. "Nipplegate", as the Superbowl incident has come to be known, casts a long shadow that very much impacts everything that came afterward. Fortunately funkmeister and Jacksons expert Chris LeBrane is along for the ride to add some sugar to this sour note in Janet's legacy. What did her albums sound like after the world stopped paying attention to Janet's every move? That's journey begins now, and it's gonna get weird.Discography:0:00: Intro to Discography/Janet Jackson / 6:05: All For You / 26:46: "Nipplegate" / 35:30: Links that matter / 37:17: Damita Jo / 58:24 Outro See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The song 'All For You' by Sister Hazel is a fun and iconic song from the late 90's, but as always Christ is trying to reveal himself to us through the song. We each have a testimony, a story that we share with our Lord. In this week's episode we look at what Christ is telling us about our testimony and where we can see him in our lives. #WelcomeToTheAdventure Media References: 'All For You' by Sister Hazel (Song) 'Alice Isn't Dead' (Podcast) "You're God is Too Boring" by Jon Leonetti (Book) Ending Satellites ft. Ever since their first commercial album debuted on February 26, 2002, the Nappy Roots established themselves not just as lyrically blessed artists, with great group chemistry but as a collection of individuals who have been able to invite all types of people, no matter what race, creed and gender to sit back, relax and get lost in the journey each album takes them. Or as writer, Adam Figman states, “while the emcees aren't the wordplay experts some of their peers and inspirations may be, they write simple yet effective imagery of the parties, people, and places generally encountered in only the most rural of settings.” One month after their fourth album, “The Pursuit To Nappyness” hit the stores, the Nappy Roots's hip-hop philosophy remains unchanged. Their latest LP, such as the ones prior to this one allows us to just listen to an album how it should be listened to. Whether in a car, walking down the street, going to school, work, working out, or just hanging out at home, from the first track to the last track, the album touches on topics from the Nappy Roots' southern roots, the countryside, friends, family, riches, and of course their constant appreciation of their fans. The opening track, “Welcome to the Show,” eases the listener into the beginnings of this album's journey What appears to be simplistic piano notes and the group's calm vocals permits the listener to be once again apart of the album, thus setting the tone for the rest of the album. They say success is the best revenge, tell a friend keep ‘em close like a enemy, invest to win safeless, the necessary, leave the rest to them loose lips sink boats, try your best to swim captain of your ship, do ya best and grin never let ‘em see you sweat the stress again and make a new direction, take ya next of kin out the trap, it's called life–make the best of it On the second track, “Do it Big,” the Nappy Roots experiment with the commercial end of hip-hop with horns blasting and boosting about money and fame. This track was one of the many summer party anthems and is a little disturbing but no need to worry, the Nappy Roots stay true to their essence of rap. The group makes sure this commercial track doesn't isolate their fans and make they feel as if they have to live up to unachievable expectations. On track seven, “The People,” Nappy Roots' member Ron Clutch spits quickly dismisses the importance of money when he spits: “Money means nothing/my people mean everything/Promise when I got all the money that I would never change/ Clutch is still the same/I kept my fee on earth/And I kept my promise/I kept my people first/My friends and my family, ya'll help made a man of me/ When I was down and out ya'll lent a helping hand to me/So I'm returning the favor and I'm passing it forward/Adversity, don't run away for it, run towards it/face it, embrace it, I promise you can make it/The time spent with your family, you should keep that sacred/ It's worth more than any amount of money, so I would never let the money, snatch that from me.” It's great to see the Nappy Roots live up to their name in this album. The continue to show their humility to their fans, friends and community. The beats are simple which allows the listener without distraction to hear each lyric—something which is lacking in much of today's mainstream rap music. The Nappy Roots do not use any hidden verses to express their admiration for their fans. The final track, “All For You” sums up the album. First words spoken on the track? “We love our fan…” Nappy, we love ya'll too. iew... Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

In 2001, VIBE magazine assigned me a cover story on Janet Jackson. She had recently gone through a divorce and was about to release a new album, ALL FOR YOU. I traveled to Minneapolis, where she was recording the album. We met up at her hotel and she drove us to the studio. This is the conversation that took place on the ride.(More interview excerpts to come...)

Join April Sims and Vincent Versher (sitting in for Christopher 'Poetry Man' Fields) as they welcome MO Pleasure to April Sims A and E Radio Show. A little bit about MO Pleasure Known affectionately as Mo Pleasure, this renowned multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer, began playing acoustic piano at the age of four and by his early teens already mastered several instruments including bass, trumpet, guitar, drums and violin.Upon receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from University of Connecticut, Mo began his professional music career playing bass with Ray Charles. He then began working as a session musician, backing some of the most accomplished talents in Jazz and R&B including George Duke, Natalie Cole, Dianne Reeves, Jonathan Butler, Rachelle Ferrell, Michael McDonald, Oleta Adams, Roberta Flack, Marcus Miller and Frankie Beverly and Maze, to name a few. From 1989 through 1992, Mo was both keyboardist and musical director with saxophonist Najee, pianist Alex Bugnon, and vocalists Philip Bailey, Patti Austin and Jon Lucien. In 1993, he became a member of the legendary group Earth, Wind & Fire, and ascended to become the band’s musical director in 1994. Mo was featured playing keyboards, trumpet and guitar with Janet Jackson’s 2001 “All For You” tour and played keyboards and trumpet with Boney James’ 2004 “Pure” tour. As a principal member of the group Devoted Spirits, Mo was featured playing keyboards for Jimi Hendrix’s 60th Birthday Celebration and the 2004 “Power of Soul: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix” tour. Mo most recently toured with Roberta Flack and Rachelle Ferrell. In addition to performing at worldwide jazz festivals including Montreux, North Sea, St. Lucia, Cancun, and Montreal, Mo has been a featured concert pianist, performing Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra and for the Boston Ballet. There are many Television and Video performances to Mo’s credit, including Ray Charles BBC Special, Mad TV, BET on Jazz, VH1, The Tonight Show, Earth, Wind & Fire documentary Shining Stars and HBO Special – Janet Jackson in Hawaii. His movie soundtrack credits include Talkin’ featured in the Disney movie “Three Men and a Little Lady” and the EWF single “Cruisin,” featured in Spike Lee’s “Get On The Bus.”Two of Mo’s CDs were released independently in Spring 2005. Devoted Spirits’ “Tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire” and Audio Caviar “Transoceanic.” Audio Caviar is a collaboration featuring Mo on piano, bass, trumpet and flugelhorn, Ralph Johnson on drums and Denmark guitarist Steen Kyed.Mo’s first offering as a solo artist, Elements of Pleasure, was released in 2006. The release earned him a devoted worldwide following and established him as a producer and multi-instrumentalist with singular talent. Scheduled for release in late 2008, Mo’s second solo effort, Mo’Elements of Pleasure, expands upon his first project. The lyrical movement of the piano, the soulful sounds of the trumpet and flugelhorn and the funky rhythm of the bass are the elements that touch the heart, mind and soul. The music is a combined collaboration of instrumental funk and soulful vocals, reminiscent of his many musical influences. Demonstrating the respect and cache he has garnered in his illustrious career, the album is chockfull of special guests including Tony Terry, Maysa, Ali Woodson, Philip Bailey, Maxayn and Bobby Ricketts. Sister Hazel - All For You I was watching the morning news on the Boston Fox station, and I heard some familiar music accompanying one story. I couldn't identify it right away and that always drives me nuts. When the segment ended, I just kept humming the tune to myself. I knew it was a nineties hit, so I tried like hell to spark my memory. Lil Sticks used to love this song, and I knew it was a hit when he was in junior high. Finally, the band name snapped into my consciousness: Sister Hazel. That's the ticket! It's from the 1997 release,... Somewhere More Familiar, which was the band's second album. All For You reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. I do own the album, but I can recall only a couple of standout songs. The rest was fairly pleasant, but average. I do remember loving the final cut on the cd, Starfish, which Wii Lad relished as a dance-along tot song. Today, it's a bonus song in the flashback.
