It's Friday, April 4th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Chinese Communists sentence pastor to 5-year prison sentence The Chinese Communists have sentenced Pastor Wan Changchun of Living Stone Reformed House Church to a five-year prison sentence, reports International Christian Concern. The church is located in the city of Bengbu in the Anhui Province in Eastern China, As reported by Bitter Winter Magazine, Pastor Changchun was arrested in April 2023 for alleged fraud connected to the operation of his house church. However, Chinese communist officials often falsely use fraud allegations and charges to accuse, harass, arrest, and ultimately imprison Christians, especially pastors, to attempt to shut down their unregistered house churches. The pastor was one of the house church leaders who signed the statement against the repressive 2017 Regulation on Religious Affairs. The Chinese government has long considered religion an existential threat to the state's authority. Despite the unjust punishment, Pastor Changchun has echoed the words of Peter who said in Acts 5:29, “We must obey God rather than men.” Democrat Sen. Cory Booker's record-breaking speech championed the Left Democratic Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey officially broke the record previously held by the late Republican Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina by delivering the longest continuous floor speech in Senate history, reports The Epoch Times. He began his speech at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 31st.   Here are some highlights. BOOKER: “I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able.” The Senator talked about how liberals, who have believed the lies of the mainstream media, are quaking in their boots about Trump's re-election. BOOKER: “They're writing me letters with words like ‘fear' and ‘terror.' They're talking about staying up at night and not being able to sleep because they don't have a president that comforts them.” Senator Booker took a page from Republican candidate Ronald Reagan, who asked the American people this question in 1979 in his race against Democratic President Jimmy Carter. REAGAN: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” After only two months into Trump's second term, following four years of Joe Biden, Booker asked this ridiculous question. BOOKER: “I ask you, ‘Are you better off than you were 72 days ago economically?' Prices are up. Stock markets down. The risk of recession is climbing. Consumer confidence is in the gutter.” Like most of the Leftists in the Democratic Party today, Booker played the class warfare card. BOOKER: “We have more billionaires than any other country. Does that speak to the greatness of our nation? No. I think the things that speak to the greatness of a nation is how do we take care of each other?” And, by taking care of each other, he was not referring to the Christian concept of helping one another out of one's own resources, but the idea of redistributing wealth of other people with tax money. BOOKER: “I've had farmers from New Jersey to Texas coming to my office about this president freezing contracts that we approved in a bipartisan manner, putting them in financial crisis. It's not right or left. It's right or wrong. It's not a partisan moment. It's an American moment. It's a moral moment.” Rejecting the premise that Americans can better determine how to spend their own heard-earned money, Booker advocated for at least maintaining the high rate of taxation. BOOKER: “You don't need more tax cuts. And we, as a society, have an obligation to each other.” As of 7:19 p.m. ET on Tuesday, April 1, Booker had spoken for 24 hours and 19 minutes, a minute longer than Strom Thurmond's 1957 filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Most filibusters on the Senate floor are motivated by opposition to a proposed bill. In this case, he used his time to object to the entirety of the Trump agenda. Booker finally yielded the floor at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1st, with his time on the floor clocking in at a total of 25 hours and 5 minutes. Not only had he stood the whole time, but he never took a restroom break by fasting ahead of time and by dehydrating himself.  Throughout his Senate filibuster, he took some occasional sips of water. Dow Jones drops 1,100 points a day after Trump tariff announcement The three major U.S. stock indexes dropped on the morning of April 3 after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs of 10 percent or higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging by 1,100 points by noon yesterday, reports The Epoch Times. Aside from the Dow Jones tumbling, the S&P 500 Index dropped by 3.5 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite slid by more than 4.7 percent at about 9:35 a.m. EST. However, advocates of the Trump tariffs believe the economic pain will be momentary, as he uses them as leverage to achieve fair trade long-term. Trump's ban on trans troops halted A three-judge panel on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request from President Donald Trump's administration to pause a lower court's decision blocking enforcement of a ban on trans-identified military service members, reports The Christian Post.    The Pentagon argued that trans-identified soldiers compromise "military readiness." By denying the administration's request, the appellate court left in place the preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, late last month. In essence, the 9th Circuit Court ruling prevented the Trump administration from removing trans-identifying service members. ‘Angel Eye Camera' lets parents of premature babies check-in And finally, 1 in every 10 women in the United States will experience the premature birth of their child. A heroic organization is helping these women keep two eyes on their baby in the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit, even if they are miles away, reports GoodNewsNetwork.org. Called the AngelEye System, developed by the firm of the same name, it's a camera with a remotely-accessible 24-hour feed that's mounted via a boom arm onto any of the beds or tables an infant may be placed on. It allows the parents, who may not always be able to stay with their child, to keep an eye on them whenever nerves or separation anxiety strike. Thanks to advances in medical science, premature birth is a challenge that can be reliably overcome.  Philadelphia's Lauren Walsh had to face this exact situation when her third baby, John, was born prematurely at 32 weeks, not even weighing two pounds. John required a 61-day stay in the NICU. The AngelEye Camera was a lifeline for his mom and dad who could check up on him at any point by switching the camera feed on from their phones or computers. No doubt, the presence of the AngelEye Camera lowered the parents' anxiety, making it easier to abide by the counsel of 1 Peter 5:7 which says, “Cast all your anxiety on God, because He cares for you." A Chinese tea chain has stopped the sale of its recently released range of merchandise that features depictions of Buddhist artwork due to it potentially violating Chinese law concerning the commercial promotion of religion.由于涉嫌违反宗教事务条例,一家中国奶茶连锁店已经下架其最近推出的一系列以佛教艺术为特色的商品。On Nov 28, Hey Tea released co-branded tea and merchandise with the Jingdezhen China Ceramics Museum in Jiangxi province featuring images of ceramic Luohan sculptures. The collaboration, named Hey Buddha, featured three of the ceramic sculptures exhibited at the museum depicting the 18 Arhats, or Luohan in Chinese, from Buddhism.11月28日,喜茶与江西景德镇中国陶瓷博物馆联名发布了以陶瓷罗汉雕塑为主题的联名茶拿铁及周边产品。此次合作名为“佛喜杯”,以博物馆展出的三件陶瓷雕塑为特色,描绘了佛经中的十八罗汉。Among them, the Thinking Luohan gained internet notoriety earlier this year after memes of a photo of it with the added text "speechless" went viral. Taming Tiger Luohan and Happy Luohan from the series also went viral, becoming the other two designs from the collaboration.今年早些时候,一张配有“无语”的“沉思罗汉”照片在网络上疯传,引发了网友的谴责。在该系列中,此次合作的另外两款设计“伏虎罗汉”和“欢喜罗汉”也在网络上走红。Hey Tea printed the images of the three Luohan ceramic sculptures on special paper cups designed for its tea latte beverages in the series. Other merchandise included fridge magnets and stickers. With the younger generation increasingly interested in Buddhist culture, the collaboration quickly became a hit on social media.喜茶为此系列的奶茶拿铁设计了专门的纸杯包装,并将三罗汉陶瓷雕塑的图像印在这些包装上。参与联名的商品还有冰箱贴和贴纸。随着年轻人对佛教文化越来越感兴趣,此次联名很快在社交媒体上引起热议。On Friday, the Shenzhen Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau informed the tea chain, which is headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, that the collaboration could be seen as an act of commercial promotion in the name of religion, which is in breach of China's Regulation on Religious Affairs, media outlet ThePaper.cn reported on Sunday.据澎湃新闻周日报道,上周五,深圳市民族宗教事务局通知总部位于广东省深圳市的喜茶公司,此次联名涉嫌以宗教名义进行商业宣传,违反了中国《宗教事务条例》。A directive introduced in 2017 to specifically tackle the issue of the commercialization of Buddhism and Taoism also prohibited commercial promotion in the name of Buddhism and Taoism.2017年,一项专门针对佛教和道教商业化问题的规定出台,明令禁止以佛教和道教的名义进行商业推广。A bureau staff member said Hey Tea had been very cooperative. By Sunday, it had removed all paper cups and merchandise from the collaboration from its outlets across the nation.民族与宗教事务局一名工作人员表示,喜茶积极配合整改。截至周日,喜茶已经下架了全国各地门店的所有纸杯包装和联名商品。Hey Tea's alleged violation of regulations on religious affairs became one of the most discussed topics on social media on Monday.喜茶涉嫌违反宗教事务规定的话题成为周一社交媒体上热议话题之一。Li Yanqin, who bought a tea latte from the collaboration, said she thought the paper cup with a Thinking Luohan was just for a laugh at first, but then she found herself in an awkward situation when she finished the drink.购买了联名款拿铁的李艳琴(音译)表示,起初,她以为带有“沉思罗汉”的纸杯只是为了搞笑,喝完拿铁才意识到事情没那么简单。"I don't know if I should throw away the cup or not," she said. "I am not a follower of Buddhism, but I don't think it's a respectable thing to just toss the cup in the bin because there is an image of Luohan on it. Now, I still have it on my desk." She said companies should be respectful of all religions and their followers.“我不知道我该不该扔掉纸杯,”她说。“我不是佛教徒,但我觉得把印有罗汉像的纸杯扔进垃圾桶会亵渎神明。直到现在,我还把这个纸杯放在桌上。”她认为,商业公司应该尊重所有宗教及其信仰者。Some people said Hey Tea only used the images of ceramic Luohan sculptures, which are just works of art from the perspective of many people, meaning the allegation of a breach of regulations could be flawed.也有人认为,喜茶只是使用了陶瓷罗汉雕塑的图案。对很多人来说,这些罗汉雕塑只是艺术品,不赞同指控喜茶违反宗教事务条例。Jingdezhen China Ceramics Museumn. 景德镇中国陶瓷博物馆

Today that may be surprising given the deep religiosity that has come to characterise President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling Justice & Development Party (AKP). The extent to which Erdogan’s Islamist leanings has filtered into public life has caused many Turks to chafe, but the president has persisted in his imposition of a more religious character onto Turkey. Dr. Gökhan Bacık explained in a recent podcast interview with Ahval News’ Editor-in-Chief Yavuz Baydar that traditionally the state has long used religion to help govern Turkey. However, the relationship was traditionally more asymmetric than it may be today. “What we call Turkish state tradition has been more or less the same since the thirteenth century,” said Bacik, who teaches political science at Palacky University in the Czech Republic and is an expert on Turkish and Middle Eastern politics. Rulers in Turkey during the Seljuk, Ottoman and republican era have all used Islamic groups in different ways as part of their governance. As the host of the caliphate and while controlling Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, Islam’s three holiest cities, Ottoman rulers relied especially on Islam to cement its legitimacy as the centre of the Muslim world. Once the Ottoman Empire collapsed, the new Turkish republic under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk underwent a process of reducing the power of Islam vis-a-vis the state, but not removing it completely. To this end, the Ministry of Religious Affairs was established in 1924 “to administrate the affairs related to faith and worship of the religion of Islam”. Bacik acknowledges that Islam in Turkish politics was frequently used as an “ideology of justification” and was not always a “dynamic paradigm.” To this end, Turkey’s government would be content to work with religious groups, but only so long as it was the dominant player. “When a group becomes too powerful to challenge the power elite, the state is quick to purge it,” said Bacik. This has been a defining feature in the story of President Erdogan’s rise to power and take-over of the state. For years, Erdogan was a member of numerous Islamist parties that were suppressed by the republican authorities, but once he became prime minister in 2003, Erdogan found a ready ally in the movement of Fethullah Gulen. Together, they took over numerous posts in the government and worked together to defang the military, who saw itself as the protector of state secularism. This partnership began crumbling after the Gezi Park protests and corruption investigations against the AKP in 2013. The drift reached a climax in 2016 after the failed coup attempt against Erdogan that he blamed on Gulen and his followers. Today they are regarded by terrorists by the Turkish state. In some sense, Erdogan is a part of both trends; using religion as an ideology of justification and increasing pressure on it when religious forces opposed to him becomes a force in its own right. “Erdogan has always been a part of this network, but skeptical of these religious orders,” Bacik explained.

Keyman Modern Turkish Studies Program Podcast

In this episode, we talked to Ceren Lord about her book Religious Politics in Turkey: From the Birth of the Republic to the AKP, in which she questions the view of the grassroots Islamist movements as natural challengers of the authoritarian secular state in a novel way based both on her archival research and the interviews she conducted with state officials, influential religious figures, and the employees of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (diyanet). What was the role of the ulema in the formation of the Turkish Republic? What kinds of alliances did the multiple state institutions form with religious groups and sects? Should we read the AKP regime as a continuity of or a rupture from the state tradition of the Republic? Ceren Lord is currently British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow, with Middle East Studies at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA), where she was previously a Sasakawa Peace Foundation Postdoctoral Research Officer. She completed her PhD in May 2015 at the London School of Economics, Government Department, focusing on the role of the state and the ulema (Diyanet) in the rise of political Islam in Turkey. She holds a master’s degree from Oxford University (St Antony’s College) in Modern Middle Eastern Studies. Alongside her academic career, Ceren previously worked in finance as an economist focusing on Europe, the Middle East and Africa. She is a regular contributor to the Economist Intelligence Unit, Associate Editor at the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies and the lead editor for the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) Contemporary Turkey series published by I.B. Tauris. Her book, ‘Religious Politics in Turkey: From the Birth of the Republic to the AKP,’ was published in October 2018 by Cambridge University Press. https://www.area-studies.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-ceren-lord https://oxford.academia.edu/CerenLord

Mr. Kostas Kalemis is the Refugee Education Coordinator in the camp of Malakasa, a small town 30 kilometers north of Athens. He explains why education is the most powerful tool to realize sustainable development and how it can eliminate hate speech towards refugees. Mr. Kalemis has been working in the camp as a representative of the Greek Ministry of Education for the last two years. He is responsible for the educational programs for all students from 4 to 14 years old. Sotiris met him in his office, which is actually a container inside the camp, and they discussed the role of education in establishing relationships supportive to integration, the lack of translators in Greek schools, and how education can help eliminate hate speech towards refugees. Education itself is an empowering right and one of the most powerful tools by which economically and socially marginalized children and adults can lift themselves out of poverty and participate fully in society. The right to education is a fundamental human right which is respected, protected and promoted by the Greek state. According to European and national law, every child, has the right to education and, most importantly, any refugee child. In March 2016, the Greek Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs took the initiative to prepare a plan for the integration of refugee children into education in order to contribute to their wider social integration. They established three committees for the support of refugee children: - The Committee for the Support of Refugee Children headed by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs and 14 staff members from the Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs. - The Scientific Committee (SC) consisting of 26 professors and scientific associates from Greek Higher Education Institutions, working closely with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs. - The Art Committee (AC) consisting of 9 members who are artists and professors related to the art departments of HE Institutions.

Threats to religious freedom in China were on the rise in 2018, especially after the Chinese government instituted its new Regulations on Religious Affairs in February 2018. Christians in China are facing newfound persecution. Between September and December of last year, three major churches, the Early Rain Covenant Church, Zion Church, and Rongguilli Church were shuttered. Muslims in Xinjiang are experiencing terrifying surveillance and between 800,000 to more than 1 million individuals are now held in political “reeducation” facilities facing unknown fates. Persecution of Tibetans likewise intensified with religious structures and homes of Tibetans destroyed. Persons of faith are increasingly under siege as China attempts to “Sinicize”, or secularize, religious practice so that it conforms to the values and priorities of the Chinese Communist Party. Promoting religious freedom has been in the U.S. ethos for generations, and over the past year the U.S. government has consistently condemned heightened threats to religious freedom in China. Please join us as we consider next steps the U.S. government can take to hold China accountable for its violations of religious freedom. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, we discuss the politics of family in Turkey and its relationship to both religion and government policy. Our guest Hikmet Kocamaner discusses how the Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs--the Diyanet--oversees a range of activities concerning the family as part of the project of a "New Turkey" championed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). In particular, we discuss family-oriented television programming related to Diyanet. While distinctively Islamic in their rhetoric, these programs in fact serve as a fascinating meeting point for various expert approaches to social issues and the family, demonstrating the complex entanglement of Islamic and secular institutions in modern Turkey.« Click for More »

At a time when Islam is unwillingly represented as barbaric, monstrous and far from any sense of civilisation, it is a timely obligation for Muslims to read their authentic tradition with eyes on the current reality and look deep to see where we were and where we are. Muslims’ biggest challenge today is that they do not read; rather, ignorantly argue and irrationally behave. Absence of wisdom is the biggest calamity and that absence is caused by neglecting tradition and authenticity; we ended up either blindly following or blindly rejecting others. The balance in between is to wisely take, wisely make and wisely undertake. What is Al-Taratib Al-Idāriyyah? A Book in which Sayyid Abdul-Hayy Al-Kittani summarised (in around 1000 pages) how the society of the Prophet e was run and organised. What structure of government it had, what jobs and professions were there. Looking at the different sectors of public service, private professions, use of the then-very advanced techniques of administration, leaves us that the concept of a modern state is by no means alien to the Prophetic tradition. From a perfect judiciary system and organised security and police force to structured religious affairs, from perfect fiscal and book keeping system to market law enforcement and from specialised professions and handcrafts to a unique health and quarantine system, the Prophetic society was ahead of its time and unique in the whole of the Arabian peninsula and even the neighbouring Persian and Byzantine super empires. The book is stimulating, mind-blowing, informative and eye-opening. Why this course? Because our studies of the Prophetic Sirah is always focused on events rather than the society; and it is society that makes people feel intimate and connected. Because there are voices within Muslim circles that claim that modern society and its structure has nothing to do Islam and its Prophet e. Because there are many gems which our scholars have written and this is one of them that need to be discovered and utilised. Because we need to realise - through proper reading and study - how civilised and advanced was the society of the Prophet e as this sheds light on one of the many aspects of his greatness and fosters our belief in his message. Dublin Festival of History 2016 panel with Martina Devlin, Diarmaid Ferriter, Patsy McGarry, Ronan McGreevy, Margaret O’Callaghan and moderator Sarah Carey. Despite the many dire warnings of the risks involved in the 1916 commemorations, the general consensus confirmed that Ireland had not only conducted them with dignity and gravitas but had also succeeded in igniting a public mood of pride and confidence as people streamed onto the streets to remember Ireland’s journey towards self-determination. How can we sustain the positive tone in future commemorations? Will Civil War politics provoke division and old enmities? A panel of distinguished experts examines the key issues. Martina Devlin is a novelist and columnist for the Irish Independent. Diarmaid Ferriter is Professor of Modern Irish History at UCD. Patsy McGarry is Religious Affairs correspondent with The Irish Times. Ronan McGreevy is a news reporter with The Irish Times. He is the editor of Was it for This? Reflections on the Easter Rising. Margaret O’Callaghan is a senior lecturer at Queen’s University, Belfast School of History. Sarah Carey is a columnist and broadcaster. Recorded at Printworks, Dublin Castle on 23 September 2016.

The Chinese Communist Party issued new directives for religious affairs earlier this year, especially calling for religions to serve national interests. What does this new project to “sinicize” religions imply for religious practice in China? For Christians in China, how are they adapting as rising nationalism clashes with religions that have foreign roots? Sociologist Richard Madsen reflects on the takeaways from a recent gathering to discuss China's new policy on religion, which convened some of the key thinkers who formulated the new regulations and practitioners such as Catholic priests whose work are impacted by the regulations. Prof. Madsen is the Distinguished Professor of Sociology at UC San Diego, and the Director of the Fudan-UC Center on Contmpoerary China. Prof. Madsen has been called “one of the modern-day founders of the study of Chinese religion.” He authored 12 books, including Democracy's Dharma: Religious Renaissance and Political Develpment in Taiwan, China's Catholics: Tragedy and Hope in an Emerging Civil Society, and The Many and the One: Religious and Secular Perspectives on Ethical Pluralism in the Modern World. Prof. Madsen is currently working on a book about happiness in China, which he describes as an exploration on the “search for a good life in China in an age of anxiety.” China 21 is produced by the 21st Century China Center, at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy. This podcast features expert voices, insights and stories about China’s economy, politics, society, and the implications for international affairs. Roger Bolton explores religious broadcasting on radio. As the UK becomes more spiritually diverse and increasingly secular, how should the BBC approach religious news and worship? Since its birth in the 1920s, the Corporation has always produced religious content, with programmes focussed primarily on Christian worship during the early days. Ninety years later, the religious makeup of the country is far more diverse and complex, so is the BBC keeping up with the times when it comes to spiritual matters? We ask listeners whether they think religion still has a place on the BBC, and how a national broadcaster should reflect faith and worship across different religions. For some Feedback listeners, religious output is extremely important - for others, it is outdated and inappropriate. Roger discusses these views with Religious Affairs correspondent Caroline Wyatt, Editor for Religion and Ethics in BBC Regions, Ashley Peatfield, and Head of Radio for BBC Religion and Ethics, Christine Morgan. The subject of Religion is not just confined to specialist programming. Outside of people's personal worship, religion plays a significant role in social and political affairs both on the international and domestic stage. So how well does the BBC tackle religion when it comes to news and current affairs? Islam is the fastest growing religion in the UK, but while coverage and debate around the Islamic faith is fairly common on Radio 4, Muslim worship is rarely heard. So how well does wider BBC Radio serve its Muslim listeners? Feedback visits BBC Radio Sheffield, which runs Ramadan programmes during the Holy month. Producer: Karen Pirie A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.

The campaign started this month and will run to the end of the year. Surrogate motherhood is banned in China. The campaign will focus on identifying and punishing medical personnel and intermediary agencies that are involved in the surrogate motherhood business. Online, TV, radio and print media that carry surrogacy advertisements will also be checked. The authorities will step up supervision over the sale and circulation of assisted reproductive technology, drugs and medical equipment. Despite the ban in China, the wombs-for-rent business has thrived. Studies show that an estimated one in eight couples have fertility problems.China's health authorities say cracking down on illegal surrogacy is a long-term task, and the campaign will continue until it is effectively controlled. They have set up a special hotline: 12356. People can provide information on any medical personnel, intermediary, media organization or individual involved in the illegal practice. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Many great discoveries started with whimsical questions. When David Hu from the Georgia Institute of Technology saw a mosquito braving heavy rain to land on a man's face, the question that popped up in his mind was how do the pests survive an onslaught of raindrops, each more than 50 times the creature's own weight.Such thoughts may be fleeting for many, but Hu and his colleagues spent years solving this mystery. By observing mosquito-raindrop collisions with high-speed cameras, they discovered that the mosquito is protected by a strong exoskeleton and can perform a dive upon impact with raindrops to lighten its force. The study, believed to offer insight to the development of insect-sized flying robots, won Hu a Pineapple Science Prize for physics recently in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.China's equivalent of Ig Nobel Prizes, the U.S. parody of the real Nobel, the Pineapple awards honor the curiosity behind amusing and amazing experiments. The fourth annual awards ceremony was co-hosted by Zhejiang Science Museum and Guokr.com, China's leading popular science website. Its mathematics prize this year went to Huang Jinzi and his team from New York University, whose mathematical models answered the long sought-after question from childhood: How many licks does it take to finish a lollipop? It was initially an experiment on how water currents dissolve solids, using hard candy as a subject, but the theory developed from the experiment was later used to answer the lollipop conundrum -- a lollipop with a diameter of 1 centimeter can be licked 1,000 times. The invention prize was awarded to Jia Wenzhao and his colleagues from the University of California, San Diego, who invented a sticky device that can generate electricity from sweat. With its help, you can get an extra second for your cellphone by several hours of sweaty exercise.Others on this year's prize list included proof that "loving one's own name makes one feel happier" for the psychology prize; and the "a monkey's face looks like its mother's" experiment for medicine and biology prize. A blogger also won a special prize for spending a year documenting a meat's rotting process.Launched in 2012 to honor imaginative research and to arouse public enthusiasm for science, the Pineapple Prize is so named because of the difficulty of peeling the fruit, its inexpensive price and popularity with ordinary people. This year, the list of winners was more international. Around one third of the recipients were from overseas. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. This year's pilgrimage is expected to run from Sept 21 to 26.Last year, trips to Mecca were organized for 14,000 pilgrims from China, 3,200 of them came from Xinjiang. The region has more than 13 million Muslims, and has a long waiting list for the government-organized visits. The Xinjiang Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau says the quota is almost the same every year, far short of the number of applicants in the region.Applications are submitted to the State Administration of Religious Affairs.
