Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Meet one of the most charmingly eccentric of our Legends, Judy Tenuta. From a start at Chicago's Second City, Judy created an immediate sensation with her unusual style -- sort of a Far Side cartoon brought to life. In the era of early MTV, that style proved to be perfection and soon Judy could be regularly seen on the small screen. A 1986 Letterman appearance and 1987 HBO special turbocharged her career and she won the American Music Award for best female comic in 1987. Through multiple albums and books, Judy dove into her persona as the "love goddess", wearing an accordion and slinging pointed and sometimes salty jokes. He also created and produced Real People, produced the first 5 years of the Grammy Awards plus series and specials starring Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Eddie Murphy, Cher, Elton John, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Liza Minnelli, Michael Jackson, Doris Day, Jonathan Winters, Richard Pryor, Shirley MacLaine, Bill Cosby, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Diana Ross, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, Nat King Cole, Placido Domingo and scores of others. George Schlatter created and for 15 years produced the American Comedy Awards. Most recently, George produced a comedy collection for Sirius Radio and Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate for Netflix. Besides his work in television, George has been honored for his showmanship and involvement in many charitable causes. To further his support of comedy and the people who perform it, George has become an active supporter and Board Member of the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York. He's donated much of his material to them and they've named their theater, The George and Jolene Brand Schlatter Theater, in his honor. George's book, Still Laughing: A Life in Comedy, which dropped in July, is a feast for show biz and comedy lovers. I devoured it. And he shares so many gems from it with us here, from the creation of Laugh-In, finding Goldie, Lily, Artie, Judy, Henry, Ruth, Dan, and Dick, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Robin Williams, Lucy, Steve Lawrence, Judy Garland, Cher, Diana Ross, more, more, more! https://www.amazon.com/Still-Laughing-Comedy-Creator-Laugh/dp/1951213793 We had a near-miss encounter 37 years ago when he was producing Comedy Club and I was visiting my Laughter Company Improv cohort, Bob Nelson. I didn't let him get away from me this time! Where has George Schlatter been my whole life? No matter, he's here now. And that's no accident! Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Meet one of our personal favorites this week -- the great Fred Willard. A consummate improv, sketch, and film comedian, Fred got his start in a New York comedy duo, but it was after he spent time at Second City (alongside the likes of Robert Klein and Peter Boyle) that his career blossomed. From helping found the influential Ace Trucking Company comedy troupe, to Norman Lear's Fernwood 2 Night, to a long run as part of Christopher Guest's improv repertory company, Fred was a reliable and welcome addition to any comedy project. Find more clips below and, as always, thanks for sharing our shows!   Want more Willard? Fred had a great long run as part of Christopher Guest's repertory company, winning an American Comedy Award for his work in Best of Show. But our favorite is this short bit in This is Spinal Tap, where Fred plays the consummate military guy trying to be hip as he meets the band. https://youtu.be/IpTNoq2np_4 Fred was always at his best in a group. His ability to play off people, honed by years at the Second City, let him make any scene funnier. As part of the Ace Trucking Company comedy troupe Fred was a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight show. Here's one of their bits from 1974. https://youtu.be/c4wL0BM1IQc Fred had a gift for playing characters who were confidently clueless, none better than his portrayal of hack tv talk show sidekick Jerry Hubbard (to Martin Mull's smarmy Barth Gimble) on Norman Lear's "Fernwood 2 Night". Here is Fred with some prime inane banter! https://youtu.be/RJsNr0GqXMk

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Meet standup stalwart Paula Poundstone this time out. Since emerging as a comedy star in the 1980s (including an American Comedy Award win), Paula has remained a favorite on tv talk shows, game shows, and the standup stage. Her comedy is thoughtful but pointed, calling out the absurdities of daily life and popular culture. As always, find additional cuts below. Want an easily searchable archive of past shows? Check out our YouTube Channel (Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy). And thanks for sharing our shows!   Want more Paula Poundstone? Paula had great chemistry with Craig Ferguson, so it was no surprise that she was among is final guests as he wound down his late night show. This clip is vintage Paula, pulling big laughs from everyday life -- such as her son's first efforts at filling out a job application. https://youtu.be/G6WnBZ5G6fc In recent years Paula may be best known as a regular panelist on the NPR news quiz "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me" where her brand of plain spoken snark is right at home. Here is Paula riffing on Suze Orman. And yes, we know "Wait Wait" is a radio show -- this footage was taken from BBC's attempt to create a video version. https://youtu.be/gR47v_2a8Lw Paula remains a top standup draw both here and in Canada where this clip was filmed. It has Paula musing a little with her audience about the differences in tolerance between the two countries. https://youtu.be/AYHzVxhhSZA

A house-filling favorite in Las Vegas since she opened as one of the hottest tickets in town in June 2000, Rita Rudner is known for her epigrammatic one-liners. Over the course of a multi-year run she sold almost two million tickets, grossed over a hundred million dollars and become the longest-running solo female comedy show in the history of Las Vegas. She was named Las Vegas's Comedian of The Year nine years in a row and in 2006 received The Nevada Ballet's Woman Of The Year Award. In October 2017 she was given the Casino Entertainment Legend Award. Rita's first solo HBO special, “Rita Rudner's One Night Stand”, was nominated for several awards, as was her eponymous English BBC television show that later appeared in the USA on A&E. Rudner's two one-hour specials for HBO, “Born to Be Mild” and “Married Without Children,” were ratings standouts and she performed all over the country, filling Carnegie Hall in New York three times. In 2008 Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas was PBS's first ever stand-up comedy special. Rita Rudner has written five books; her bestselling non-fiction titles, “Naked Beneath My Clothes,” “Rita Rudner's Guide to Men,” and “I Still Have It…I Just Can't Remember Where I Put It,” plus the novels “Tickled Pink” and “Turning the Tables.” The audio version of “Naked Beneath My Clothes” received a Grammy nomination. She just released her autobiography, “My Life in Dog Years.” Rudner is a frequent collaborator with her writer/producer husband of thirty years, Martin Bergman. The couple's first produced film script was “Peter's Friends.” The film, starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Kenneth Branagh, Imelda Staunton, Stephen Fry, and Rita, won the Evening Standard Peter Sellers Award for Best British Film and was nominated for the Goya Award for Best European Film of 1994. The script was nominated for a WGA Best Screenplay Award and Rita won Best Supporting Actress at the American Comedy Awards. Rita Rudner moved to New York at the age of fifteen to become a dancer on Broadway. She appeared in several shows, including the original productions of “Follies” and “Mack and Mabel.” It was while in “Annie” on Broadway that she began exploring the comedy clubs of Manhattan. In the early ‘80s, Rudner took a full-time leap from chorus lines to punch lines and was soon a regular guest on both Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show. In June 2016 Rita was invited and honored to speak about her career and technique in comedy at Cambridge University, England. In 2017 she was invited by Oprah Winfrey to appear on a cruise to Alaska that Oprah did in partnership with Holland America. Instead, you can just pop something into your Easy Bake oven, grab a bottle of Pepsi Blue, then flip to that channel with the cartoon mice and enjoy! Rob teaches Ray about how ABC - with the help of Jim Janicek and some stellar theme song writers - dug itself out of a programming rut with some inspired marketing moves and savvy show scheduling; the charismatic young actor whose glasses-wearing, nasal-voiced, B-plot character ended up changing Family Matters from a message-driven drama into a comedic sensation; why Bea Arthur is now also a dancing goddess; and the many ways cable television channels have tried to recreate (or in ABC's case, recapture) the glory that was TGIF. In 1987, HBO had a comedy special called Women of the Night. It featured four women who were known regionally and at certain comedy clubs, but had yet to really reach a national audience. They were Ellen DeGeneres, Paula Poundstone, Rita Rudner, and today's guest Judy Tenuta. In fact, for the next four years each one of these women would be named Best Female Stand-up Comic at the American Comedy Awards (with Tenuta being the first in 1988). So throughout the 1980s and 90s Judy was a part of a big boom for women in comedy. She branded herself as The Love Goddess and starred in national commercials, published her first book, and received Grammy nominations for her comedy albums. And if you've seen the movie Waiting for Guffman, one of my all-time favorite films, you'll notice a certain Judy Tenuta T-shirt worn by Corky St. Clair. However, her introduction to the stage was actually as an actress, and in college she majored in theater. In this interview we'll talk about her transition from plays and musicals to stand-up comedy as well as her long-standing connection with the LGBTQ community. But first she shares with us the cancer diagnosis she received during the height of the Covid pandemic. As the Aphrodite of the Accordion, though, she hasn't let that stop her, and this past New Year's Eve she released a music video called “Kicking Cancer's Ass.” It's in perfect keeping with her campy and offbeat persona that has made Judy Tenuta one of the most unique comedians and performers of her generation.
