We continue our Best of 2024 episodes with an  episode from the Village SquareCast podcast, hosted by the Village Square. We wanted you wonderful SquareCast listeners to know that we didn't plan for this episode to drop on Leap Day and we didn't plan on it being (we kid you not) Episode 100. But both things just happened. At the very least, we think that's a sign that you really ought to listen. Were we "the universe has a plan" maximalists, though, we'd say it means you need to quit your day job and follow bridge builders like Jon Haidt and The Village Square around like Jack Kerouac groupies. You pick. Here's our blurb to help inform your imminent life choice:What if, at a pinnacle of our civilization's technological achievement, everything just broke — the institutions we've come to rely upon in navigating a modern complex world, the shared stories that hold a large and diverse democratic republic together, and even a common language through which to navigate the rising tide of crisis.  According to renowned social psychologist and author Jonathan Haidt, this describes our current reality, one that he calls “After Babel.” In this new normal, we are scattered by a digital environment into feuding tribes that are governed by mob dynamics and driven by a minority of ideological outliers, made stupid at warp speed by group think, and — thanks to social media — armed with billions of metaphorical “dart guns” with which to immediately wound “the enemy” in ways that are hardly only metaphorical. What could go wrong? Our very special guest, Dr. Jonathan Haidt, will delve into the profound impact of social media on democratic societies, dissecting the intricate web of challenges it poses to civic trust and civil discourse. Don't miss this chance to hear from one of the foremost thought leaders of our time — one who has generously given his counsel to The Village Square, and countless efforts like ours — on this existential challenge of our time. Read Why the Past Ten Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid  in The Atlantic and learn more about Dr. Haidt by clicking the MORE button, below.Additional InformationThe Village SquareCast PodcastMore shows from The Democracy Group

Is America really getting stupider? Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt makes the case in his influential essay in The Atlantic Magazine titled “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid”. I challenge his thesis from an integral perspective. Growing from a cultural conversation dominated by a modern worldview to one where many perspectives are online may feel like going backward (kind of like a sweet 12-year-old becoming a sour 13-year-old). But every new stage of development looks like a regression to the stage it is emerging out of. In this episode I make my case. Enjoy!

Brands get lucky once, maybe twice every generation, when the rules of status change and social equity is suddenly up for grabs. Our Concept Bureau Senior Strategist Zach Lamb believes we are in the midst of one of those rare shifts right now, where we are moving from the self-indulgence of conspicuous consumption to the self-denial of what he calls “conspicuous commitment”.Public figures are devoting themselves to difficult new modalities, diets, spiritual quests, life practices and ideologies. Your friends are going on arduous, painful, yet revelatory, psychedelic retreats. All around us, wellness brands, food brands, medical brands, lifestyle brands tell us that self-denial is the new flex.No longer are we obsessed with flaunting material possessions and extravagant experiences; instead, we're witnessing the rise of people showcasing their unwavering dedication to self-work, vulnerability and personal growth. In a time when nihilism is literally everywhere, when pessimism gets clicks on headlines, when post-capitalist hopelessness is a trending aesthetic on TikTok and every meme deals in absurdity, conspicuous commitment stands out.In this episode, we also speak with W. David Marx, author of “Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change” who has an alternative view of how status is tied to money more than ever, and what that means for an increasingly flattening culture. If you deal in any premium or luxury category, this is a must-listen. The ways we seek to distinguish ourselves have dramatically evolved as we prioritize discipline and personal growth over material success. That means everyone has to play by new rules.Links to interesting things mentioned in this episode and further reading:Conspicuous Commitment Is the Next Era Of Status (Concept Bureau): https://conceptbureau.com/conspicuous-commitment-is-the-next-era-of-status/Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change by W. Jonathan Haidt is the author of The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure, The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion and The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom. One of the pioneers of Moral Foundations Theory and a founder of Heterodox Academy, over the last few years Haidt has been focused on the impact of social media on our politics and culture (he is writing two books on the topic). Razib and Haidt begin their discussion with the blockbuster piece in The Atlantic, Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid. They both agree that in many ways the 1990's and 2000's were an information utopia, where the mind-opening possibilities of the internet were being realized. But Haidt lays out the case for social media, and more precisely functionalities like Twitter's “quote-tweet” feature, having degraded online discourse, and driven offline polarization. He also argues that government and tech have to protect children from social media, making a case for enforced age restrictions on access. Razib presses Haidt on his theory about the “moral foundations” that differentiate liberals from conservatives. They discuss the possibility that ideological orientations may have been scrambled by the same processes that drove polarization in society more broadly with social media. Haidt also discusses his resignation from an academic society and the climate of intellectual conformity that is now seeping into every corner of the scholarly world.

Jonathan Haidt sees that we have entered a social-psychological phase change that was initiated in 02009 when social media platforms introduced several fateful innovations that changed the course of our society and disintegrated our consensus on reality. In this conversation with Long Now co-founders Stewart Brand and Kevin Kelly, Haidt presses on questions of technological optimism, morality vs ethics, teen mental health, possible platform tweaks that could reduce the damage and just how long this next cycle of history could last. Prompted by Haidt's piece on Why The Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid, this discussion offers a behind the scenes look at the thinking going into Haidt's next book; release slated for the fall of 02023.

Were you an evangelical kid in the 1970s, 80s, or 90s? Then you may be suffering from the lingering affects of “rapture anxiety.” Why did rapture theology feature so prominently in the American church, where did it come from, and why does it seem so bizarre to Christians today? Then, Russell Moore has a new article on the heresy of Christian Nationalism accusing it of doing to conservatives what the Social Gospel did to progressives a century ago. Skye then talks to Silicon Valley pastor, Jay Y. Kim, about his book “Analog Christian: Cultivating Contentment, Resilience, and Wisdom in the Digital Age.” Kim says social media is designed to produce the opposite of the Fruit of the Spirit in us, and argues we need to “linger longer” in non-digital, incarnate spaces and relationships to combat its affects. Our guest this week is Jonathan Haidt. Jonathan is a social psychologist, professor, and author whose research examines the intuitive foundations of morality, and how morality varies across cultures—including the cultures of progressive, conservatives, and libertarians. He is the author of The Happiness Hypothesis, and of The New York Times bestsellers The Righteous Mind, and The Coddling of the American Mind, which he co-authored with Greg Lukianoff. We chat with Jonathan about his recent Atlantic article “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid,” social media and its effects on our discourse and culture, the need for a shared story, the importance of dissent, the distinctions between liberalism and conservatism, the global impact of America's descent into what he calls “structural stupidity,” and what measures we can take to improve it. For this week’s episode, I’m joined by NYU psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of several books, including (with Greg Lukianoff) The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure and The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion. Jonathan is also the co-founder of Heterodox Academy, where I serve on the advisory council. Despite that connection, this is our first extended public conversation. This is not, however, the first time I’ve engaged with Jon. After a talk some years ago, I asked Jon a question during the Q&A session, which I reintroduce here. Heterodox Academy’s mission is very important, but does focusing exclusively on viewpoint diversity prevent us from acknowledging that some viewpoints are more cogent than others? Jon’s recent Atlantic article “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid” generated a lot of discussion, and he elaborates on his theory of “structural stupidity” here. He claims that, at the national level, the Republican Party’s hostility to moderation has made it structurally stupid and unable to examine its own premises, while left-dominated “epistemic institutions,” like journalism and academia, are mired in their own kind of structural stupidity. I find the structural analysis compelling, but I think it elides the fact that some of the Republicans’ policy position are not, in themselves, stupid at all. Jon is concerned that increasing intolerance on the left, especially on college campuses, may be caused by generational changes in child development. Gen Z is the first generation to have had access to social media as children, and they also had far less unsupervised free play than previous generations. I ask Jon whether this shift can account for groupthink around COVID-induced school shutdowns and drastic changes in attitudes toward trans and racial issues in the US. While the academy no doubt leans left, there is much more viewpoint diversity in economics departments than other areas. Jon has some interesting ideas about why. And finally, I ask Jon whether religion could play a role in increasing viewpoint diversity. It was great to finally connect with Jon. I hope and suspect it won’t be the last time we sit down for one of these conversations. This post is free and available to the public. Speech and the right to it has become deeply contested across America in the 21st Century. What is free speech, what are its limits, and what norms should apply to both give everyone a chance to speak while also respecting the needs of a democratic society to function? Investigating these and other critical questions has been Jonathan Haidt, professor of social psychology at NYU's Stern School of Business and the author most recently of “The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure,” which he co-wrote with Greg Lukianoff. He recently wrote an article for The Atlantic headlined “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid,” and in this first part of a two-part series, Josh Wolfe and Danny Crichton discuss with Haidt his thesis of American “structural stupidity” and why the classical metaphor of the Tower of Babel describes the current political and social environment for Americans.

If you're familiar with the so-called “heterodox” space, this week's guest on The Unspeakable scarcely needs an introduction. In 2018, the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, along with author and first amendment advocate Gregg Lukianoff, published The Coddling of The American Mind: How Good Intentions And Bad Ideas Are Setting Up A Generation For Failure. The book was central to a burgeoning public conversation that asked why young people, especially students on college campuses, were so unwilling to engage with ideas they perceived as dangerous—and in fact why they found so many ideas dangerous to begin with. Jon's research offered crucial datapoints as to why this was happening and suggested that a handful of intersecting cultural trends—fearful parenting, omnipresent social media and the corporatization of higher education, to name a few—had resulted in a generation marked by high anxiety and a low sense of autonomy. His more recent work, including his article last month in The Atlantic, “Why The Past Ten Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid,” goes beyond what's happened with young people and looks at our collapsing institutions more broadly. Jon and Meghan talked about that article and covered lots of new territory, too, including a project of Meghan's that she has just begun to talk about, a heterodox women's community. Many of her observations about the male dominated “free think” space and women's reluctance to speak their minds map on to Jon's own research about girls' social development.   Relevant links:   https://www.thecoddling.com   https://heterodoxacademy.org   https://letgrow.org   https://openmindplatform.org     Guest Bio: Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist at New York University's Stern School of Business. »The world out there is a complex place, and those who want “easiness” can always gorge themselves on TED talks.«, Evgeny Morozov Kein komplexes Problem der Welt ist mit einfachen Mitteln und Ideen zu lösen. Es ist relativ einfach auf die Schwächen bestehender Systeme hinzuweisen, viel schwerer aber diese durch etwas besseres zu ersetzen: »The high point of techno-democratic optimism was arguably 2011, a year that began with the Arab Spring and ended with the global Occupy movement.«, Jonathan Haidt Welche Rolle spielen in diesem Dilemma konservative und progressive Ideen? Underlying idea of conservatism: »There is an intuition, even if they don't think of it that way logically, that almost everything did not make it through evolution in terms of social systems. And the few things that did weren't the things people thought would. So there is a lot of embedded wisdom that wasn't understood, it was hard earned. And we want to preserve that and not break it because we think we understand it well enough and we might not.« »Progressive intuition is that we deal with fundamentally novel situations evolution did not yet figure out and we need innovation.« »And of course the synthesis of this dialectic is: we see new innovation that is commensurate with that what should be conserved. And not everything deserves to be conserved«, Daniel Schmachtenberger Rutger Bregman hat Recht, wenn er sagt: »I'm a historian. And if history teaches us anything, it is that things could be different. There is nothing inevitable about the way we structured our society and economy right now. Ideas can and do change the world.« Die andere Seite aber spricht der britische Philosoph John Gray an: »The world in which we find ourselves at the start of the new millennium is littered with the debris of utopian projects« Referenzen Andere Episoden Episode 7 und Episode 8: Alles wird besser... oder nicht? Despite the uproar over the leaked Supreme Court decision overturning Roe, it turns out 80 percent of Americans have a nuanced view of the issue. Phil, Skye, and Christian discuss responses to last week's show and ask why are we nuanced about some moral issues and absolutist about others. Then, conservative Christians are attacking Tim Keller for his winsome, non-partisan approach to Christianity. They say winsomeness may have worked in the past, but now the culture war is so dangerous that we need a more aggressive and offensive approach. Are they right? Skye interviews Eboo Patel, the founder and president of Interfaith America, about his new book “We Need to Build: Field Notes for Diverse Democracy.” Patel, a Muslim-American, talks about the transformative role Christianity had on his calling, why interfaith cooperation is essential, and what concerns him about the current culture of activism in America. ‘Destructive' social media cancel culture making people ‘afraid to speak up,' harming ‘our institutions' says Jonathan Haidt

Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist at the NYU's Stern School of Business and author of an extraordinary article, “Why the Past 10 years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid”. The psychologist discusses the political strife of cancel culture and how it has become exasperated by social media, commenting that, “what makes it so destructive is the fear. That's what's changed our institutions that people are afraid to speak.” Haidt comments, that we can't have “democracy without good institutions”, and the events of the last eight years has been an uptick in cancel culture, is “making our institutions and our group dumb because when people are afraid to speak up and challenge the orthodoxy, then decision making goes off kilter.” He also says that most people on social media, “are reasonable people who love our country, and it's the extremists on the right and the left, plus trolls” and “Russian agents,” there are the only “four groups that have really benefited from Twitter and other social media platforms and the rest of us the other 80% of the country, we're just fed up.” He also offers up what he says is his solution for this, which is for Congress to reform current social media laws, but says that the single most important reform for change is to “require identity authentication in order to open an account.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What are the unique challenges that prevent you from inhabiting your most authentic and embodied voice, and how can integral thought and practice help us to overcome those challenges — in our society, in our communities, and in our own consciousness? Ryan and Corey begin by taking a look at some of the central cultural, technological, and behavioral challenges that take us further away from our most authentic expression, wonderfully illuminated by Jonathan Haidt's recent article, “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid”. We were both very excited about Jonathan's piece, which deeply resonates with so many of the critical themes we've explored in the Inhabit series over the months and years. In his article, Haidt identifies three primary factors that bind society together — social capital (extensive social networks with high levels of trust), strong institutions, and shared stories. He then explores how each of these became so compromised in our civilization, and suggests some possible interventions (what I often call “enfoldment mechanisms”) in order to get things moving in the right direction again: “We must harden democratic institutions so that they can withstand chronic anger and mistrust, reform social media so that it becomes less socially corrosive, and better prepare the next generation for democratic citizenship in this new age.” —Jonathan Haidt In our conversation, Ryan and I try to pick up where Jonathan left off, suggesting that we actually need to install these sorts of enfoldment mechanisms in our own interior operating systems, as much as in our exterior/collective operating systems. In other words, we cannot transform these systems “out there” unless we work to transform our own consciousness and communities “in here”. How do we do so? Ryan and I try to answer this question by looking at two fundamental lines of development — the intrapersonal line (how we relate to ourselves), and the interpersonal line (how we relate to each other). We begin with the intrapersonal, distilling some timeless wisdom from two different spiritual lineages — the notion of “Right Speech” in Buddhism, and the Quaker practice of “letting your next words come from your highest Self” — two complementary micro-practices that can help us to better align ourselves with our own inner source of wisdom and compassion, to communicate with greater authenticity, and to bring as much conscious embodiment to our online engagements as we unconsciously do when we are face-to-face. Next we take a look at our interpersonal capacities, and how we can use Integral ideas to facilitate more healthy and rewarding community experiences. When I was interviewing Stefan Schultz for our Journalism in the Disinformation Age discussion, he included some different strategies that each developmental stage uses for what he calls their “conference culture”, which Ryan and I unpack in this episode. All of us have likely seen each of these strategies playing out in our various online community spaces, and therefore may be helpful to make some of these nested subjects into objects in order to create more shared agreement around the sorts of standards we want to hold ourselves to when interacting with each other.

If Winston Churchill were alive today, would he get canceled? Jonathan Haidt can tell you, but his answer is not exactly comforting. Haidt is a social psychologist and professor at NYU who has devoted his career to the study of morality. But while he's always been an optimist, he's noticed some concerning changes since the rise of social media. Now, he argues, social media is not just out of control, it could cause the collapse of America. It's the subject of Haidt's recent article for the Atlantic, “After Babel: Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid.” On this episode of "The Glenn Beck Podcast," Glenn and Haidt discuss whether America just experienced a second Tower of Babel, why social media has fueled our political divide and devastated Gen Z, and what we must do to reverse course: “We need a Geneva Convention for the culture wars.” This Week's Sponsors: Built Bars are made with real chocolate, high in protein and low in calories and carbs, and taste exactly like a candy bar. Have you ever wondered "Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid" ? We attempt to give an answer by looking at a popular Atlantic article with that title from cultural commentator Jonathan Haidt. Points of discussion include social media, its influence and some possible ways to curtail its negative effects.Sure... social media is a problem and has amplified our fragmentation, like languages at the Tower of Babel, but isn't there a deeper issue? Yes - what's currently being discussed as "The Meaning Crisis" by a growing number of voices, such as Jordan Peterson, Bret Weinstein, Jonathan Vervaeke, Paul Vander Klay, Johnathan Pageau, Tim DeRoche and others. We look at this current moment, try to unpack some of its causes and history, and ultimately contextualize it with the Christian faith.Popular (and excellent) show This Is Us reaches its final few episodes and Nate has thoughts. What does our current pop culture have to say about things like love and marriage? How should a Christian respond when non-Christian ideas about such topics are presented and even celebrated in our pop culture? This week: Yuval Noah Harari speaks with Andrew Yang, Jonathan Haidt on why the last ten years have been uniquely stupid, why coastal cities are sinking, how a working-class Aussie miner got invited to NASA, and how to spot the alignment of four planets this month.YUVAL HARARI & ANDREW YANGYuval Noah Harari, the historian and author of the best-selling book “Sapiens”, has talked to US presidential candidate Andrew Yang in a fascinating conversation about AI, public policy and the future of work.Andrew is known for campaigning for universal basic income- a very controversial idea, especially in the United States. He's also very concerned about job automation, and what happens to people who lose their careers due to technological advancements. His insights go hand in hand with Yuval, who has written extensively on what happens when we face massive technological changes, such as the Industrial Revolution, or the now with the AI Revolution. They discuss how job automation and idless can lead to people heading down rabbit holes of political and religious extremism, and how the war in Ukraine may be our biggest motivation to move away from fossil fuels.Yep- they cover some very important topics, and we definitely recommend you give it a watch and let us know your thoughts in the comments section. And if you're interested in the ethical implications of AI and automation- don't miss our Philosophical Ethics course starting next month. Sign up at the link in our bio.JON HAIDTEveryone's talking about Jonathan Haidt's latest essay “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid”, published last week in The Atlantic. It's been called the best explanation of how social media is making us unfit for democracy. And in it, Jon uses the metaphor of the tower of Babel. If you went to a religious school, maybe you know the story- but if you don't, the cliff notes version is that after the Great Flood, a group of people speaking one shared language built a tower tall enough to reach heaven. This made God angry, and he thinks that these people have gotten too big for their boots, and are going to get more and more cocky. So he confuses their language so they can't understand each other, therefore stopping their ability to work together.According to Jon Haidt, a social psychologist, this is what social media is doing to us.We hoped social media would help us work together, but instead it is fracturing the way we communicate, and it's having terrible effects on our society. And if you haven't yet, grab yourself a SIGNED copy of Jon's must-read book, “The Righteous Mind” from our shop. We only have one copy left! Head to the link in our bio.SINKING CITIESHave you got that sinking feeling?Well if you live in a coastal city, that's literally what's happening to you.Earth scientists recently published a paper showing that coastal cities around the globe are sinking by up to 5 centimetres a year! They studied the satellite imagery of 99 cities on 6 continents to find that the sinkiest cities are mostly in Asia- such as Tianjin, Karachi and Manila. While rising sea levels due to climate change play a major role in the sinking, scientists believe that most of it is caused by humans. When the researchers looked at Google Earth imagery of the sinking regions, the team saw mostly residential or commercial areas, leading them to believe that groundwater pumping is the main culprit. But there's hope! Back in the day, Shanghai and Jakarta were sinking more than 10 centimetres per year, on average. Then their governments better regulated groundwater extraction, and the sinking has slowed right down.AMATEUR ASTRONOMERThis miner from outback Australia went from being a school dropout to a prized astronomer! His name is Trevor Barry, and he's the recent recipient of the Astronomical Society of Australia award. He's known in the space world for his contributions to astronomy, all done from his backyard in the isolated town of Broken Hill.Trevor left high school to take up an apprenticeship at one of the local mines, but he always wondered why the night sky looked the way it did. His obsession with astronomy reached its peak when he designed and built his own observatory and telescopes! In 2008 he found a white spot on his favourite planet, Saturn, which ended up being an electrical storm. NASA and the Cassini team have used Trevor's data, and three years ago Trevor got to travel to NASA's headquarters to meet the leader of the Cassini imaging team, Carolyn Porco. We love Trevor's story- it teaches us that there are so many alternative pathways to achieve success, and that all you need is passion! If you're an amateur astronomer, come study cosmology at Think Inc Academy with Professor Alan Duffy. Sign up at the link in our bio.APRIL SKIESSky gazers- this is your month!April is perhaps the best month for peeping our planets. Yep- April skies are so clear there's even a song written about them.Beginning around Sunday morning, you'll be able to see something pretty rare- Mars, Venus, Jupiter AND Saturn in one straight line.To see this awesome planetary foursome, those of us in the Southern Hemisphere should head out about an hour before sunrise and look to the southeast, where the sun is about to rise. There you'll be able to see with your naked eyes all four planets in a neat line. While this makes sky gazing far easier, the line is just an optical illusion. The planets aren't actually lined up, and from any other vantage point in space you'd be able to see that they're far apart. If you're someone who's always gazing up into space thinking about the meaning of it all- come along to see theoretical physicist Brian Greene LIVE in conversation this June. You'll have the chance to pick Brian's brain about life's biggest questions. Tickets are at the link in our bio.---That's all for this week- we hope you learned something new! This week our guest is social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt, who has authored several of my personal favorite books including the Happiness Hypothesis, The Righteous Mind, and the Coddling of the American Mind. We're lucky enough to have Jon join us to discuss his just released Atlantic article entitled, 'Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid,' which explores his upcoming book about social media. In this episode we discuss the key points of this article, exploring what dynamics shifted in American life as a result of social media and the resulting impacts on our children's mental health, on our politics, and on the fabric of society itself. Visit TheCoddling.com or LetGrow.org for more information on raising and mentoring Gen-Z kids to be less anxious and depressed.
