Wokism is the death wish of the inferior, the unintelligent, and their pawnsToday, The Two Mikes spoke with Dr. Edward Dutton, an anthropologist, journalist, and polymath who lives and works in Finland and produces distinctive books that help to explain the ups and downs that occur during the unfolding of civilizations, as well as their causes. Dr. Dutton said that in the world's current difficult condition there is a bit of justification for guarded optimism. In essence, the ideologues and practitioners of Wokism are unknowingly doing “God's work”. So devoid of commonsense and intelligence are these Wokesters that they are, in essence, genetic mutants and are slowly being replaced by highly conservative peoples whose distinguishing characteristics are intelligence and religiosity. Indeed, Woke leaders are easily identified by their lack of truth-telling, their eagerness to revel in a high-level of lawlessness, a their noticeable lack of intelligence, their terror of a fair fight, their passion for being victims, hypocrites, narcissists, as well as for teaching other to be the same, their unending thirst for power, their rabid hatred of religion, and, most recently their eagerness to look after and support other peoples, rather than their own, as well as to pardon people associated with any kind of criminal activity. In short, Wokism is the property and pride of genetically inferior left-wingers who aim to cause civilizational collapse, while operating under the guise of “social justice” to hide their ardent dedication to Social Darwinism. On the other side of the divide lies conservatives, people who are generally fit (physically and intellectually); self-reliant, courageous, religious, group-oriented – a fundamental part of successful conservatism – and appropriately belligerent. The foregoing traits constitute the basis for surviving the lethal antics and intellectual nonsense advocated by mad left-wingers. American conservatives are especially capable of taking back their country, as they have proven themselves to be one of the world's foremost examples of a people whose intelligence, belligerence, respect for tradition and their fellows, strong and durable religiosity, and ability to carve a successful civilization out of a wildly dangerous North American wilderness. These conservatives simply have no use for the tenets now cultivating the world's current and aggressively anti-humanity morass. Professor Dutton closed by noting that the collapse of civilization for which the left yearns and has worked to cause, may yet come, but it will not come in the lands the Woke have worked so long to destroy. Instead, it will come in the non-Western countries that have followed the lead and ideas of the Wokists and so have prepared themselves for self-destruction.  --Among Dr. Dutton's Books (available at Amazon) are: --Woke Eugenics: How Social Justice is a Mask for Social Darwinism (2024),by Edward Dutton and J. Improving Presidential Tenure and Effectiveness in Higher Education

Changing Higher Ed

Higher education must strive to increase the average tenure of university presidents, which currently stands at a dismal 3.7 years. This can be accomplished by addressing ineffective presidential onboarding processes and shared governance practices, among others.    In this second half of a two-part series, Dr. Drumm McNaughton discusses best practices and strategies with a nationally recognized authority figure who has one of the best track records and overall experience under his belt to speak on such a topic, Chancellor Emeritus Dr. William E. “Brit” Kirwan of the University System of Maryland. Brit has served as chancellor at the University System of Maryland for 13 years, president of The Ohio State University for four years, and president of the University of Maryland College Park for 10 years.   Part one of this series addressed the challenges facing university presidents and the root causes of tenure decline.   Podcast Highlights The process for onboarding presidents includes hiring a search consultant, identifying a screening committee that's representative of the university, gathering and narrowing down a pool of candidates, and bringing those candidates in for a 60- or 90-minute interview. This process is flawed.   Interviews don't provide enough substance despite serving as the most critical factor in hiring a president. Every person on 15- to 20-member boards only gets to ask one question, and applicants are only expected to provide brief answers. In addition, presidents who would have been perfect for the institution are oftentimes dismissed if they just happened to have an off day. Although the interview process is getting longer and involves more representation, the board is generally influenced by their one interview.   It is difficult to gauge the effectiveness of an applicant who has never served as a president before. There isn't another campus role like the president, who serves as the face and voice of the institution in the public eye and can do it effectively in a way that advances the institution.   Universities and search committees are oftentimes too passive and rely too much on search consultants. Although search consultants play a valuable role, search committee members know the institution best and have the right contacts. This should be the primary or major source for presidential candidates.   Incoming presidents who are not familiar with their new university must become informed about its culture, traditions, interests, challenges, and priorities. New presidents can accomplish this by identifying a seasoned individual or a consultancy to interview administrators, faculty, staff, students, board members, and members of the community to understand the institution's aspirations and challenges.   Presidents and board members must have a very clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities to prevent board intrusion and micromanaging. Ground rules must also be identified from the start. Additionally, presidents need to insist upon an annual board review so there's a written record of what the board wants done and how successful the president was in addressing them. This will help prevent boards from inventing or revising points in their favor.   Shared governance in consultation with representative bodies must be respected. Presidents should resist the ongoing pressure from boards and external forces to take immediate action. The community must have demonstrated respect, trust, confidence, and commitment to consultation and shared governance.   Successful shared governance usually has a nonhierarchical three-tiered system. Tier one includes representative bodies of faculty, staff, and students. Some of them are rolled into one entity, while others are separate. The second tier is administration. The third tier is the governing board.   There needs to be a clear understanding that the board has the final authority on everything they choose because they are the legal entity created by the state to run the institution. However, the most successful systems see the board delegating a great deal of this authority. In particular, the board should delegate authority on matters they don't have expertise in, such as academic curricula and academic appointments. Some boards rubber stamp tenure recommendations. Shared governance works effectively when the board delegates certain authorities to the president, such as appointments to cabinets and even for tenure.   Any campus constituency—such as faculty, staff, students, and, in some cases, all of them—that is affected by any major policy decision must be consulted. Recommendations must also go to the president. Based on the model, the president either acts on these recommendations or refines them so they're appropriate for administrators and then takes these recommendations to the board, who then acts upon them. This is based on the RACI model.   Presidents must build a relationship of trust with the board, both collectively and individually. They must interact with the board outside of committee and/or board meetings. A successful practice includes speaking with one board member every week to see how they are doing, what is happening, and if they have any thoughts or concerns.   The board has to be kept informed on all matters. There can be no surprises. There's nothing that board members should learn about by reading the newspaper, for example.   Successful presidents are accessible, visible, and good listeners. Good listeners can put themselves in another's situation and fully understand why that other person holds that view. To build consensus and have strong support over an extended period, the community must believe they are heard and understand why certain decisions are made, especially if they go against what they want.   Presidents must walk the walk and talk the talk. Their behavior must emulate the values they're espousing. For example, presidents should reject salary increases or bonuses if no one else is receiving raises.   Give bad news or admit mistakes when they happen rather than trying to cover them up. Presidents who are not candid will be haunted by this in the future.     Read the transcript →   About Our Podcast Guest Dr. William E. “Brit” Kirwan is chancellor emeritus of the University System of Maryland (USM).  He is a nationally recognized authority on critical issues facing higher education. Navigating President Turnover: Higher Ed Leadership Challenges

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2023 25:19

President university turnover is a major problem in higher education, with the average tenure of leaders serving in this capacity at one institution declining sharply from 10 years to a shocking 3.7 years.   In this first half of a two-part series, Dr. Drumm McNaughton discusses the challenges facing university presidents and why their tenures have become so short with a nationally recognized authority figure who has one of the best track records and overall experience under his belt to speak on such a topic, Chancellor Emeritus Dr. William E. “Brit” Kirwan of the University System of Maryland. Few are as qualified to do so as Brit, having served as chancellor at the University System of Maryland for 13 years, president of The Ohio State University for four years, and president of the University of Maryland College Park for ten years.   Part two of this series will cover what higher ed can do to improve university president retention.     Highlights     §    The role of the university president has become much more complex and challenging over the last few years, causing the average tenure of presidents to fall from 10 to 3.7 years. There has never been more political interference and influence on higher ed as there is now, especially in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina. For example, the governor of Florida recently directed his attorney general to file a lawsuit against the Department of Education on changing accreditors.   §    There's also an unprecedented amount of pushback on DEI when diversity and inclusion were once very much a part of higher ed. In Ohio, a very anti-DEI bill was introduced that would restrict what higher education could do on diversity issues. This change in focus is forcing presidents to juggle what can be taught in the classroom and their faculty, who are very much invested in DEI initiatives.   §    Divisions and political beliefs are also over-influencing boards, causing them to be more directive and engaged in operational issues than they should be. As a result, sound board governance has declined, with many boards going rogue. Politicized boards also are forcing presidents to translate policy into operations when this should be done in parallel and jointly by the board, while boards are sticking their noses into what can be taught, which should be decided by the president.   §    For example, at the University of Virginia, the board chair recently told the president to announce her resignation at the next board meeting before board members were made aware of this decision. At Chapel Hill, the board refused to grant tenure to a distinguished journalist for political reasons. A similar situation occurred at Texas A&M.   §    Funding issues are mounting and will likely worsen, forcing presidents to make massive cuts to programs, negatively affecting faculty morale. Presidents are also more involved in fundraising than ever, complicating their leadership roles. Meanwhile, big-time intercollegiate athletic programs are forcing presidents to cobble together money to keep these expensive enterprises afloat.   §    There are two reasons universities can still hire presidents despite these major problems. The first is that it's human nature to want to advance and meet new challenges. As a result, many people are still compelled to rise to the top. The second is that salaries and compensation packages for presidents have escalated dramatically. There are several presidents earning compensation packages of $1 million or more per year.     Read the transcript →   About Our Podcast Guest   Dr. William E. “Brit” Kirwan is chancellor emeritus of the University System of Maryland (USM).  He is a nationally recognized authority on critical issues facing higher education. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at UIC, Dr. Schubert served as Chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, Director of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program in Curriculum Studies, and Coordinator of the M.Ed. in Educational Studies. Among his many scholarly accomplishments is the publication of 17 books and 200 articles and book chapters. He has given over 250 presentations at scholarly and professional organizations.  Dr. Schubert's impressive body of scholarship is housed in the Special Collections Department of the Zach S. Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University. As a Lifetime Fellow of the International Academy of Education, Dr. Schubert continues to pursue his passionate interests in curriculum history, theory, inquiry, and development in both school and non-school contexts.   This episode offers an important window into the history of curriculum thinking by one of the great scholars in the field. During our conversation, Dr. Schubert reflects on his decision to study education; his personal experience with the reconceptualist movement in the field of curriculum; and emerging resistance to past and present forces of conquest and colonialism in the United States and around the world. He elaborates on his concept of “the theory within” which relates to his work on teacher lore and to biographical and autobiographical work of professors of education. Pushing beyond the question of “what is worth knowing,” Dr. Schubert raises questions of what is worth needing, doing, experiencing and wondering.   Among Dr. Schubert's honors is his designation in 2005 as a University Scholar at UIC. In 2004, he received The Lifetime Achievement Award in Curriculum Studies from the American Educational Research Association, and in 2007, he received The Mary Anne Raywid Award for Distinguished Scholarship to the Field of Education. The music we choose speaks volumes about us as musicians, whether we realize it or not. It expresses our personal tastes in terms of style, genre, modality, and more. Not only that, our musical choices have the power to amplify the people behind them: from gender to culture, race to religion, the composers themselves are just as much a part of the music we choose as the notes on the page. It's a topic we've discussed on the podcast before, but during Black History Month, I return to one of my favorite interviews of the history of the podcast. I spoke with Dr. Mickey Thomas Terry, organist and lecturer currently based in the Washington, D.C. area. Among Dr. Terry's varied accomplishments is the African-American Organ Music Anthology, which recently released its 10th volume through MorningStar Music Publishers. Dr. Terry's professional work, both through the anthology and his research at large, seek to raise visibility for music by African-American classical composers and give them the opportunity to be played and celebrated today. And so today I replay my discussion with Dr. Terry, sharing his thoughts on the struggles of African-American composers and what we can do today to honor their esteemed work.

Dr. Panda is also a founding executive member of the Center for Circadian Biology at the University of California, San Diego (https://ccb.ucsd.edu/). With a PhD from The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California, and his postdoctoral research at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation, San Diego, Dr. Panda's laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of this biological clock (or circadian oscillator), which in most organisms coordinates behavior and physiology with the natural light-dark cycle. Among Dr. Panda's discoveries include a blue-light sensing cell type in the retina which entrains our master circadian clock, affects mood, and regulates the production of sleep hormone melatonin, as well as his discovery that maintaining a daily feeding-fasting cycle – popularly known as Time-restricted feeding (TRF) – can prevent and reverse metabolic diseases. Based on a feasibility study in humans, his lab is currently carrying out a smartphone based study (www.mycircadianclock.org) to assess the extent of circadian disruption among adults. Dr. Panda's laboratory uses genetic, genomics and biochemical approaches to identify genes under circadian regulation in different organs and to understand the mechanisms of such regulation. Dr. Panda is also a Pew Biomedical Scholar, a recipient of the Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research, is extensively published in the scientific literature, and is also the author of the books: The Circadian Code: Lose Weight, Supercharge Your Energy, and Transform Your Health from Morning to Midnight and The Circadian Diabetes Code: Discover the Right Time to Eat, Sleep, and Exercise to Prevent and Reverse Prediabetes and Diabetes.

In this episode, I was joined live in the New York Times Climate Hub at COP26 by Dr. Richard Herrington, an academic geologist and Head of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum in London, to dig deep on the topic of mining. Mining underpins nearly everything in our modern lives. Essentially, if we didn't grow it, we mined it. Yet in terms of public visibility, mining is perhaps even more hidden from view than agriculture in rich nations. Dr. Herrington offers a brief history of materials use, from a time when we used only a few minerals to the present, where we regularly use many dozens of different elements in a single product due to their varied and unique properties. We discuss the environmental and human impacts of mining as well as important processing stages, which often have hard-to-avoid impacts, such as the inherent formation of carbon dioxide in concrete making and iron smelting. Among Dr. Herrington's research interests are more environmentally-benign industrial processes, such as using lower temperatures or microbes. We move onto geological topics relevant to the energy transition, touching briefly on Deep Geological Repository for used nuclear fuel before discussing Cobalt, Lithium, and the utter certainty that renewable technologies will lead to increases in mining and mineral requirements. Other topics include why much of the mining and processing for rare earth metals and electric motors takes place in China and, finally, prospects for deep sea mining.

Every third Thursday of the month, the Virginia Council for  the Social Studies hosts a virtual* meeting called "Scholars' Hour" in which teachers from around the state can gather to discuss social studies content, strategies, and technology. February is Black history month—a time to reflect on the complexity of Black history in the United States and to celebrate Black excellence. But social studies teachers in Virginia know that Black history, culture, voices, and stories belong in our classroom every month of the year. That's why the Virginia Council for the Social Studies wants to embrace antiracist education and support teachers and students around the state in this movement. Join us as we discuss strategies for "hard history" and antiracist teaching in the social studies classroom with our esteemed guest, The Ohio State University associate professor Dr. Hasan Jeffries. Among Dr. Jeffries' numerous accolades as a historian are several prominent books on the civil rights and Black Power movements, including In the Shadow of Civil Rights and Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama's Black Belt. He also hosts the podcast "Teaching Hard History," and many of our VCSS members will remember his moving discussion with Chris Matthews at the 2019 VCSS Conference. We were pleased to welcome him  as the leading scholar for this event.

Among Dr. Salem's honors are the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Boston University School of Medicine, the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Tufts University School of Medicine, and the Paul Dudley White Award and Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Heart Association. Today, Dr. Salem shares his golden rule of medicine : To make sure a patient feels better after seeing you than they did before. And that comes from a combination of having a great patient-doctor relationship and being the most competent physician you can be. He emphasizes the role of passion in life as being the key ingredient that will keep us going at times we feel exhausted. And most importantly, to enjoy the ride. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Rather than shying away from hard work, match it with passion. The passion drives the hard work that leads to fulfillment—rather than burnout. 2. There is something more important than a good doctor-patient relationship alone: Competence. And: That the patient feels better after they see the physician than before. 3. Have fun along the way. Have a sense of humor, collect stories and experiences, and share them with others. Enjoy the ride, and pass it along to others, so we can all crack a smile when we most need it.
