It wasn't long after my entry into “mythopoetic masculinity” back in 2015 that I came across the Minnesota Men's Gathering, a yearly event that began in 1984 by Robert Bly, author of Iron John. The organization has released a trove of stories & lectures on their Youtube channel from celebrated teachers such as Bly, Lewis Hyde, Martin Prechtel, Martin Shaw, Daniel Deardorff, Malidome Some and many more. I have been tracking their yearly conference with a desire to attend - and when I heard it was the 40th anniversary, I heeded the call. I reached out and confirmed I my attendance, with the aim to produce a podcast episode afterward to share my experience. You're also welcome to join me at the Minnesota Men's Conference Oct 1-6, 2024. Get full details on their website. From the official announcement:The conferences were built around the notion that the souls of men were atrophying in a culture that was essentially in the process of colonizing its own people and of de-animating the living world. As an antidote to a culture of emptiness, of shallowness, and of disconnection from the web of being, men came together to work with mythic story, with images, with poetry, We placed ourselves into the mythic, into stories that contain traces of the old pathways to becoming a fully developed human being. The work has continued for 40 years. At this conference, we will look at what has been done, where we have failed, where there have been sweet deepenings, and where the trail may lead. In my pre-gathering podcast conversation today, I speak with conference organizers & storytellers Walton Stanley and Ben Dennis to discuss this moment of legacy and renewal. Both guests share their experiences from the conference, noting its evolution from a focus on Jungian psychology to including broader elements like ritual and influences from indigenous wisdom. They address cultural shifts, the importance of multi-generational participation, and the necessity of a greater narrative for men in today's world.More about my guests:Ben Dennis is a mythologist and writer with a love of story, myth, psychology, psychodrama, and storytelling. His mythic interests include Greek mythology, Native American story, European fairy tale, and Hindu epic literature. Ben holds his PhD in Mythological Studies with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Ben retired from the Seattle Fire Department after 28 years as a fire fighter and training coordinator for the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and Peer Support Team. He leads retreats for Veterans and First Responders, and has been adjunct faculty at Antioch University Seattle.Walton Stanley is a writer and storyteller. He has held a life-long interest in myth, story, and in the power of story to transform the paradigms and frames in which we live. Walton is currently working, with Ben Dennis, on an anthology of selected tales and myths that have been shared in the past 40 years of the Minnesota Men's Conference He has also completed a book, Following the Wrong God Home, Gilgamesh: The Foundational Myth of Civilization and the Roots of Ecological Collapse exploring th mythic roots of human exceptionalism, and our disconnection from the web of being as expressed in one of humankind's oldest extant written stories, Gilgamesh.I'd love to hear your comments. On our podcast, we've talked a lot about sexuality related to people who identify as female, but today we are focusing on those who identify as male. Societal gender roles not only impact females, but everyone else. Reece Malone and Kara discuss the way that the buzz phrase “toxic masculinity” affects those who identify as male and the way their female partners perpetuate this culture. Reece discusses topics brought into this sex therapy practice and how many grown men don't know how to access their emotions as they have been told to shut them off for so long. This messaging affects the way they show up in relationships and their sexual lives. Listen to the way Kara and Reece unpack these narratives together.  Reece Malone is a sexologist, sex therapist and sexuality educator. He is an associate professor at Antioch University Seattle and a certified sexuality educator supervisor through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists.  He provides program and policy consultation and service provider training in healthcare, education, social services and corporate sectors. The most amazing connections come from some of the least expected opportunities we experience in life. Just like the unlikely heroes we read about in stories and mythology, the impossible becomes possible.  Such was the random comment I made one day to my friend Ted Rubin (Season 8, Episode 5), as he shared some of his musings about a ski vacation he was having with a friend he met by chance some thirty years earlier on Instagram. These two friends were clearly having a blast and I was enjoying the snippets of check-ins being posted by Ted about their ski trip together. One of these posts caught my attention, specifically when Ted recorded a video coming down into the lodge to find his friend. He said something like, "There's Ben, snuggled away in the corner, thinking and writing again."  There was something about the intensity of his friend sitting there in the corner in that video that really caught my attention. It was as if he spoke to me at that moment. So, of course, I asked what he was writing to which Ted replied, "Who knows but with Ben, it's sure to be interesting. You'd like Ben, he's a deep thinker." Ted was right. I not only like Ben Dennis, but I have become fascinated with how this man thinks, tells a story and looks at the world and his place in it. He has a calming, almost meditative spirit about him that washes over you. I found myself wishing our conversation could go on forever because he just has a way that inspires me. I know if you listen to this whole podcast, he will do the same for you as well. A little more about Ben: Ben is a mythologist and writer cultivating an ongoing life-long love of story, myth, and psychology. He is passionately involved in ritual, rites of passage, psychodrama, and storytelling. His mythic interests include Greek mythology, Native American story, European Fairy tales, and Hindu epic literature. He has a wide variety of experience having worked in diverse fields such as commercial fishing, construction, and Investment Banking, and a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. Ben is a retired 28-year veteran Fire Fighter in Seattle where he served as a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team. Ben has been adjunct faculty at Antioch University Seattle and holds his PhD in Mythological Studies with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Ben has participated in and led a variety of workshops and conferences. He has assisted and taught at the Minnesota Men's Conference as a featured Storyteller since 2013. He has also been a featured storyteller and teacher with Veteran's groups dedicated to addressing “the emotional, moral, and spiritual wounds of veterans, their families and communities.” Over the past 20-years Ben has facilitated rites of passage events for young men, mentored in the workplace and in his community, and offers storytelling and drum making classes. “With a life-long fascination in literature, myth, and story I recognize that teaching is a vital part of individual growth, community support, resiliency, and understanding the community we live in. I believe it is crucial to engage the imagination in startling and fresh ways. We each have survived and thrived countless generations through oral tradition, self-reliance, dedication to community, and the archetypal desire to share what we have learned with future generations. My intention is to learn and teach in whatever way I am able.”

We've already covered a couple of episodes on sleep, including the https://yourparentingmojo.com/captivate-podcast/sleep/ (cultural issues associated with sleep), then more recently we talked with https://yourparentingmojo.com/captivate-podcast/restedchild (Dr. Chris Winter about his book The Rested Child) where we looked at sleep issues in older children.   But if you have a young child who isn't sleeping well, from the baby stage all the way up to about preschool, this episode is for you!  My guest is Macall Gordon, senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Antioch University Seattle, and who has studied young children's sleep for 20 years.  She's particularly interested in the intersection between children's temperament and their sleep, and how parents of the children she calls 'little livewires' can support these children so everyone gets more sleep.   If you have questions about sleep training - particularly when and how to do it - this episode is for you!   And if you're expecting a baby or have one under the age of one (whether this is your first or not!) you might be interested in the Right From The Start course, which is designed to help you get things right for you from the start.  We go in-depth on understanding topics like sleep, feeding, physical, mental, and emotional development, and more - both for baby and for you!   Get all the (research-backed, of course) information you need, plus a supportive community and four group coaching calls during the 8-week course.  Enrollment is open from April 3-13, and we start together on Monday April 18.  Click the picture below to learn more!     References: Macall Gordon's website, https://www.littlelivewires.com/ (Little Livewires) Adachi, Y., Sato, C., Nishino, N., Ohryoji, F., Hayama, J., & Yamagami, T. In this talk we met with Christine and Lisa to discuss and share some trauma-informed and body-oriented nervous system resources during the COVID 19 pandemic. This talk was recorded during the beginning of the pandemic in April, but still feels pertinent in it’s launch on air in October. Some of the topics covered: - The importance of orienting towards resources during challenging times. - From hyper-productivity to stop, and how much that reveals our cultural rushing. - Sheltering at home as a holding container. - Seeing how society is revealing where people are in terms of nervous system states: fight, flight, freeze and appease. - The raising of responses to these events: conspiracy theories, feelings of being at loss, overwhelm, not knowing how to deal with this “invisible” emergency. - What is it to function in a world that doesn’t support a healthy nervous system? The body is having a “neuroceptive” response and the way back to regulation is in the body. - Polyvagal Theory and the difference in the state adaptations across cultures. - Epigenetics, Family Systems and Stress. Stress, trauma and the body, Saj Razvi YouTube video. - Mobilization before safety and connection. What are we adapting to in the environment? I’m not messed up, I have a nervous system. - The loss of pleasure during trauma, allowing tuning into savoring and directing the attention back to pleasure sensations. The Hakomi Method and self-soothing gestures to bring more awareness of pleasure. - Ways in which people attempt self-regulation and functionality via external resources that are substitute forms of resources that are destructive. The concept of “vitality” as a resource that arises from within vs resources that are external. Relational and Body-Centered Practices for Healing Trauma: Lifting the Burdens of the Past 1st Edition, by Sharon Stanley - The Threshold Theory of Change, by Lisa Elliot. The reductionist idea of our culture, in terms of finding the reductionist “one” solution. Accessing greater health from a social justice response. - The midbrain, effort and control area. - Orienting to the small moments of safety, regulation and pleasure. The small steps towards pleasure and regulation. One step at the time, one dish at the time, one breath at the time. - Tracking and getting to know your own system. What’s your vitality enjoy? - Orienting to safety and threat through vision. Doing a task until completion, and avoiding chronic stress. The concept of simultaneous visual awareness via panoramic vision. Z-Health Neurofundamentals free of charge Other Resources: - Finding the gravel at the bottom of the river to stop being swept away. - Parts of the self, a part of you experiencing something, and me as the observer and care taker of this part. Turning kindness and compassion towards ourselves. My body and mind have done so much to keep me safe. Understanding the intelligence of the nervous system responses. - Start small, build up from there. Locate one part of your body that feels ok. - Using a therapy ball or lacrosse ball to map (feel) places of the body that feel pleasant, using language that feels inviting. - Accumulate those things you have access to; postive self regulating inputs, like a basket of resources with written things, objects. Ekeko god (Peru-Bolivia) as an example. - The crucial role of compassion in this connection with resources. Turning attention with compasion. CHRISTINE WUSHKE Christine Wushke is a long time Yoga Teacher, Meditation Instructor, Myofascial Release Therapist, and Certified Hakomi Practitioner, Christine decided to merge her specialties, she began to incorporate the principles of Myofascial Release, trauma awareness and mindfulness into all her yoga classes and, noticing the amazing results and effectiveness, she designed her own system of Myofascial Yoga. Lisa comes to counseling as a returning student from earlier careers in photography, community organizing, arts non-profit management, construction project management, and aerial acrobatics performance and coaching. Her work with her own life-long chronic illness has led to a holistic and eco-systemic philosophy of healing and personal growth, and to a deep study of our embodiment of stress, trauma, and factors of resilience. This podcast episode explores how one mystical experience can bring an individual to question the nature of reality enough so that they devote their life to answering questions that often time seem unanswerable: What is the nature of reality? What is a self? What is identity? Also, how do people approach their lives after they have an experience that challenges the way they see the world; yet because that same experience seems so outside of their cultural norms, they keep it to themselves? Although with that said, Dr. Linda Ceriello began to notice that at the turn of the millennium many more people seemed free to start a public discussion about these radical personal experiences that seem to shatter and destabilize one's worldview. We discuss the millennials and the plural generations as challenging the boundaries of these cultural identities, and how these younger generations are dealing with the grand narratives, they have been provided — the birth of the “spiritual but not religious” movement. We explore the differences between modernism, postmodernism, and the development of what some call metamodern; popular culture and the various depictions of mystical narratives; and she examines how Russell Brand has become such a significant figure in popular culture, fulfilling roles ranging from social advocate to spiritual teacher, and comedian. Bio: Linda Ceriello is a scholar of religions, specializing in Asian religions in America, mystical experience, contemplative studies, and critical theory of popular culture. She recently received her Ph.D. in Religion from Rice University, and also has a Master's degree in Education from Antioch University Seattle. Some of her favorite lecture topics include awe and wonder, the history of yoga, metamodern monsters, and the gnostic attributes of transgressive comedy. Publications include “Encoded Ambiguities, Embodied Ontologies: The Transformative Speech of Transgressive Female Figures in Gnosticism and Tantra” in (European Journal of Esotericism) La Rosa di Paracelso, and the forthcoming chapters, “Toward a Metamodern Reading of Spiritual-but-Not-Religious Mysticisms” in Being Spiritual But Not Religious: Past, Present, Future(s), and “"The Big Bad and the Big “Aha!”: Metamodern Monsters as Transformational Figures of Instability" in Holy Monsters, Sacred Grotesques: Monstrosity and Religion in Europe and the U.S. She is co-founder and editor, with Greg Dember, of the website, What Is Metamodern? www.whatismetamodern.com.
