Shortly after the final Enduro World Cup race of the 2026 season, Warner Brothers Discovery and the UCI made the surprise announcement that the series will not continue for 2027. Despite the uncertain future that leaves for top-tier professional Enduro racing, the announcement was met with a surprising amount of excitement from athletes, and a real sense of optimism that something better can rise from the ashes of the short-lived EDR series. Meghan's guest this week is journalist Michael Powell, a staff writer at The Atlantic and longtime former New York Times reporter whom she has admired for years for his willingness to report on thorny, third-rail cultural topics. She talked with him about his recent reporting on chronic street homelessness, drug addiction, and the real-world consequences of progressive governance. Specifically, they discussed how the "harm reduction" model plays out in cities like Burlington and Seattle, and why mainstream media newsrooms have become so hesitant to cover complex cultural realities.   This conversation covers:   The Reality of "Harm Reduction": How an approach born during the AIDS crisis expanded into policies that enable public fentanyl use while leaving working-class neighborhoods to deal with the fallout. Navigating the "Third Rail" Beat: What Michael learned covering sensitive cultural flashpoints—from campus racial controversies to gender sports eligibility—at The New York Times. Ideology vs. Lived Experience: The disconnect between well-meaning policy rhetoric and the daily struggles of local residents, parents, and small business owners. The Culture of Modern Newsrooms: Why institutional conformity, luxury beliefs, and fear of social media backlash stifle honest journalism—and why independent inquiry matters.   Read Michael Powell's writing for The Atlantic:

The person quietly costing your storage facility the most money might be the owner. It's rarely cash out of the drawer. It's income that never shows up because you're too close to your own operation to see it. Josh and Melissa dig into the ways owner-operators steal from themselves every month without even realizing it. Some of what we get into: "Maintenance" units that quietly pile up, ten or twenty of them holding spare doors, tools, a golf cart, and the brother-in-law's stuff Units sitting un-rent-ready for a week because it's hard to hold yourself accountable the way you'd hold a manager Ancillary income left on the table, from giving away retail to a tenant insurance program stuck at thirty percent penetration Marketing spend that drifts, especially Google Ads that quietly optimize you into the wrong keywords, wrong radius, and a bigger bill Vendors who need watching, like the landscaper billing us in the dead of winter for a three-minute loop around the property The thread through all of it is a fresh set of eyes. A real monthly self-audit, walking your property as if you were seeing it for the first time, catches these leaks before they cost you, especially when life happens and you have to sell. Plus a great twenty dollar Cabernet, and Josh's soapbox on why he never says thank you to AI and what personifying a tool might do to how we treat actual people. Are you all sitting comfybold two square on your body? Then I'll begin. We return to the topic of the concept album...with a spin. Some concept albums simply don't work without context. Others function as a cohesive collection of songs, even divorced from a weighty backstory or overarching theme. Those are the records that Brett Vargo discusses with this week's Third Lad, Bill Kopp. You may remember renowned music scribe Bill Kopp from his O3L appearance a few years back discussing his book on classic San Francisco indie label 415 Records, Disturbing The Peace. Now Bill's back, celebrating the release of his latest book, What's The Big Idea - 30 Great Concept Albums, out now on Hozac Books. In What's The Big Idea, Bill explores 30 remarkable concept albums, drawing from new, firsthand interviews with the artists behind their creation, including Pete Townshend, Steve Kilbey, Captain Sensible, Utopia, and William Shatner. While there are some well-known classic concept albums covered such as The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow and Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick, much of the book is dedicated to lesser known gems that dispel the myth that the concept album died in the mid-1970s. Meghan's guest this week is Evan Barker, a former progressive operative, fundraising strategist, and author of Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative. Meghan was eager to sit down with Evan after following her journey from a working-class Midwestern Obama campaign volunteer to a high-powered consultant who ultimately grew disillusioned with the modern Democratic machine. Together, they pull back the curtain on what actually goes on inside campaign "call time," how wealthy donor advisors hijacked progressive priorities, and why the party's relentless focus on identity politics alienated the very working-class voters it claims to represent.   In this conversation, they dive into: The Brutal Reality of Political "Call Time": What it's like to sit beside candidates for eight hours a day begging billionaires for cash, using psychological tricks, and maneuvering past corporate gatekeepers. How Identity Politics Captured the Donor Base: How wealthy donors, young staffers, and ideological consultants created race-based funding mandates and cultural litmus tests that backfired across the country. Behind the Scenes at the DNC Spectacle: Evan's bizarre encounters chaperoning TikTok influencers, dodging Chicago vasectomy vans, and realizing the party's messaging was completely detached from everyday economic strain. Marrying MAGA Populism with Bernie Sanders Economics: Why a working-class party offering real health reform alongside common-sense border control could dominate American politics—if the two-party monopoly ever allows it.   Grab Evan's book Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative and check out her work:

They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts…II. Go deep with only a few.Hebrews 10:24-25And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.III. Go deeper with Jesus.Deuteronomy 31:6Be strong and courageous; don't be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.”Next Steps: Believe: I surrender my soul to Jesus today.Become: I will join a small group this week.Be Sent: I will invite someone into my group this week.Discussion Questions: What makes people hesitant to open their hearts to others? What makes meeting in a small group different from being in a social media relationship? What does it look like to “provoke love” in someone else? How has God grown you through your relationships with others? What are some obstacles that prevent real depth in small groups? Is it possible to grow into the follower Jesus wants you to be while living as a hermit?  Explain your answer from Scripture.Pray for someone who is isolated from Jesus's people this week.

What does it take for groups of people to come together to do extraordinary things? Kevin sits down with Karina Mangu-Ward to discuss the habits that help teams thrive in complex and uncertain environments. Karina explains why exceptional teamwork requires more than a strong strategy, talented individuals, or simply working harder, and introduces three essential areas of focus: organizing for impact, deciding in uncertainty, and designing for learning. They talk about how living team charters keep people aligned as conditions change, how "even overs" clarify difficult tradeoffs between two valuable priorities, and why working in public allows teams to collaborate earlier, learn faster, and avoid wasted effort. Karina also encourages leaders to replace perfectionism with experimentation, create shared language around decision-making, and begin where there is energy rather than waiting for a company-wide mandate. About Karina Karina Mangu-Ward is the author of the forthcoming book Teams Who Meet the Moment: 9 Practices for Unlocking Performance and Growth in Uncertain Times . She is an organizational expert who has worked with PepsiCo, Planned Parenthood, Chanel and more and is a Partner at August. At August, she's had the privilege of working with some of the largest, most complex organizations in the world to shift their everyday ways of working. Before August, her adventures included conducting research on implicit bias, helping arts organizations behave as creatively behind the scenes as they do on stage, and running social innovation labs. If you buy Karina a coffee, she'd love to tell you how all of these experiences led her to exactly where she is now. Her motto is "get caught trying," which means she'd rather try and screw it up than not try at all. She lives with her partner and kids in Brooklyn, NY. Last episode we tackled crime from without, break-ins and unwanted guests. This time we flip it around and look at what happens inside your own office. Sometimes it's an employee skimming cash, but a lot of the time it's just money quietly leaking out while nobody's watching. Drawing on eighteen years and dozens of facility audits, we break down the patterns owners miss and the safeguards that actually stop them. A few of the things we get into: Padded overtime and time edits that slowly creep up your payroll Free units handed out to family, friends, and employees until your inventory disappears Waived fees that always line up with a cash payment, and how to catch the pattern Why theft usually starts small and innocent, and why curiosity beats accusation Prevention that works: reliable software, pulling manager admin access, daily deposits, no waived fees, and real audits We also share some big news. As Sue Haviland retires after an incredible career, we're taking over her portfolio of California properties, and we talk about what a boutique, hands-on approach to third-party management really looks like. Plus our full fall show lineup and a pool gadget that saved us a ton. This six-week series outlines the basics of Christian theology, helping congregation members understand the main points of salvation history as shown in the Bible. After a decade of ideological conformity, is American theater ready to laugh at itself again? This week Meghan is joined by Broadway star, comedian, and producer PJ Adzima, founder of Stage Time NYC and producer of Slam Frank—a mind-melting new musical that reimagines The Diary of Anne Frank through "an intersectional, multi-ethnic, genderqueer, Afro-Latin hip-hop lens." (You read that right.) Slam Frank was conceived by composer and lyricist Andrew Fox, who was stunned and inspired by a Twitter thread in which someone asked, "Did Anne Frank ever examine her white privilege?" (You also read that right.) A play within a play about a progressive theater company twisting itself into knots trying to stay on the right side of history, the show has provoked both walkouts and rave reviews—including in The New York Times. (Again, you read that right.) PJ and Meghan discuss the transformation of the theater world over the past decade, the legacy of The Book of Mormon (in which he starred for many years), the "Dear White American Theater" manifesto, and why he believes great art cannot be created by checking ideological boxes. They also talk about what happens when artists prioritize pleasing everyone over having a point of view—and why live performance still matters in an era dominated by algorithms and social media. PJ was recently added as a guest at The Unspeakeasy's Small Gathering for Big Ideas retreat, Oct 19-21 in Kingston, NY. He joins fellow speakers John McWhorter and Lisa Marchiano. Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Evan Hall is the Chief of Big Ideas of Forward Thinking Designs. Growing up in a family of touring musicians, Evan followed his parents into technical entertainment before beginning his own career at Disney, where he progressed from selling popcorn to becoming a show technician. After years in themed entertainment and AV integration, he co-founded Forward Thinking Designs to focus on creating immersive experiences through show control and programming for attractions around the world. In this interview, Evan talks about the magic of show control, surprise and delight through A/V, and being the Chief of Big Ideas. Magic of Show Control “I've got a conductor, I have a show, we're running it, and I have lots of different characters and actors and musicians all playing in harmony in unison.” Evan compares show control to an orchestra conductor coordinating every instrument to create a seamless performance. While guests only experience the finished attraction, his team's role is to ensure countless technical systems work together invisibly behind the scenes. Whether synchronizing audio, lighting, safety systems, or special effects, the goal is complete transparency so guests experience only the story and the magic, never the technology powering it. Surprise and Delight through A/V “Anything technology, anything AV, anything that is gonna surprise and delight, that's really what gets our team super excited.” Rather than focusing on traditional AV installations, Forward Thinking Designs specializes in entertainment experiences that create memorable emotional moments. Evan explains that every project begins with the creative vision, asking what guests should see and feel before determining how technology can make it happen. By planning for future expansion, simplifying user interfaces, and embracing emerging tools like AI where appropriate, the company creates systems that are both immersive for guests and intuitive for operators. Chief of Big Ideas “It's never been my place to come up with an idea. It's always been my place to come up with a spark of an idea and then honestly get out of the way.” Evan's unique title reflects his leadership philosophy. Ordinary existence holds the potential for extraordinary miracles when surrendered to the Holy Spirit. This study of Luke 5:1-11 explores how every platform—whether a business, a classroom, or a fishing boat—becomes a tool for kingdom advancement. Jesus calls for trust in deeper waters, even when human wisdom suggests otherwise. True transformation happens when a life is made available for use by the Master. Christian Life Center in Dayton Ohio shares this perspective on obedience. Discover the purpose behind every gift and the call to become fishers of people. Is chronic fatigue a gut-brain reflex? (Big Ideas in Neuroscience) | Julia Kaltschmidt

Why does being sick make you so exhausted – and why does that exhaustion sometimes outlast the illness itself? Today, neuroscientist Julia Kaltschmidt returns to the podcast to talk about the body's hidden "sickness reflex," the gut-brain circuitry behind it, and what those things might reveal about chronic fatigue.Kaltschmidt, a Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute faculty scholar and professor of neurosurgery at Stanford Medicine, is an expert on the enteric nervous system — the gut's own semi-independent network of 200 to 600 million neurons. She's leading a new Big Ideas in Neuroscience project mapping out exactly how the body tells the brain it's sick, alongside Luis de Lecea, an expert in the brain circuitry of sleep, and Christoph Thaiss, who studies communication between the gut, the immune system, and the brain. The team believes that understanding the "reflex" of sickness fatigue could eventually lead to something patients with chronic fatigue and long COVID don't currently have: a real biomarker, and a path to treatment, for a condition that's too often been dismissed as "all in your head."Learn MoreBig Ideas in Neuroscience tackle brain science of everyday life and more (Wu Tsai Neuro, 2026)Your gut – the second brain? This (almost) Fourth of July conversation originally appeared on Jenny Holland's channel, Saving Culture From Itself, but it's really a "collab," as they say in the pod-biz. Meghan has talked with Jenny before on YouTube livestreams, but this is the first time they've done an official podcast together. This conversation kept circling back to the kinds of tripwires and trigger points that cause people to tune out ideas before they even hear them—for instance my advocacy for Spencer Pratt in the L.A. mayoral race a few months ago and Jenny's support of . . . Brexit. (She lives in Belfast in Northern Ireland.) We also talked about how Meghan began her career at the tail end of the golden age of magazine journalism, and what it was like watching that world start to shift around 2012-13. Finally, in the spirit of the season, they talked about American exceptionalism, generosity of spirit, and Jenny's husband's 1987 trip to the US as part of the "Children of the Troubles" program — the trip that made him fall in love with this country.   Catch more of Jenny's cultural critiques directly on her YouTube channel:
