“In all my angst about if I would marry and if I would have children and if I would have a career, I did not fully consider how the ideals in this proclamation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reflected a certain moment in white, middle-class America's economic history,” writes Natalie Brown. Most Latter-day Saints have absorbed a lifetime of talks and lessons centered around an “ideal” family model in which a father goes to work and a mother stays at home with the children. This arrangement is no longer economically possible for many American families, and the disconnect between Church teachings and members' lived experience can have many consequences. He asks for prayers that God would open doors for him to clearly proclaim the message of Christ, even while he is imprisoned. Paul also encourages believers to be wise in how they interact with outsiders, making the most of every opportunity and speaking with grace, even when in a position of authority like a master over a slave. He then lists several companions who are assisting him, including Tychicus, Onesimus, and others, and sends greetings to various churches and individuals. Paul reminds the Colossians to fulfill the ministries God has given them. He closes the letter with a personal touch, asking them to remember his chains and offering grace to all.  Christians are called to be a people of prayer, persistence, and gratitude. We should continually seek God's guidance, praying not only for our needs but also for open doors to share the gospel with others. In every conversation, we are challenged to be wise and gracious, making the most of each opportunity to reflect Christ. We must remember that our words and actions can either draw people toward Jesus or push them away. Like Paul's companions, we are part of a larger mission, encouraging and supporting one another in faith. As we live out our ministries, we should remain alert, faithful, and bold, trusting that God will use our lives to spread His love and grace in the world. Gracious God, thank You for the gift of prayer and the privilege of seeking Your help. Draw us to be devoted in prayer: honest, thankful, and full of faith. Open doors for us to speak the mystery of Christ with clarity and courage. Teach us to walk in wisdom toward others and to let our conversations be filled with grace, seasoned with truth. Strengthen us to encourage one another and to remain faithful to Your mission for us. May we reflect Christ in our words, actions, and attitudes. Nancy and I are back together to discuss a topic that frequently shows up in our inbox: one-sided marriages. These are spouses who reach out because, even in the midst of disconnect and hurt, they still desire a healthy, God-honoring marriage, but feel like they're the only one who cares or the only one willing to put in the work. How do you reconcile and reconnect? That's the focus of our conversation today. I'm praying this episode encourages those who feel alone and offers hope and next steps for fighting for your marriage.   Episode Highlights: Love like Christ without enabling. Communicate with curiosity, not accusation. Persevere in prayer and faithful action. Approach with curiosity rather than accusation: "I've noticed you seem really tired lately. How can I support you?"  Continue showing love through actions without demanding emotional reciprocation. Don't take the bait to defend yourself constantly or prove your spouse wrong—this keeps you stuck in an unhealthy cycle. But remember, you can't force insight or repentance—that's between them and God. Humility doesn't mean accepting mistreatment or pretending everything is fine. Your humble confidence in who God created you to be can actually challenge your spouse to rise up rather than settle. Standing in the gap means interceding in prayer, maintaining hope when your spouse has lost it, and continuing to live out your marriage vows even when they're not.
