This podcast is about big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. This episode's big idea is navigation and how to implement a navigation solution that enables people with vision impairment to broadly travel cities — how and when they want to, independently. Dr. Roberts talks with Javier Pita, the creator of such a technology called NaviLens, which marries location finding with information. Dr. Roberts also talks with representatives of New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority — one of the biggest transportation hubs in the world. They discuss the importance of accessible public transportation for people who are visually impaired and how NaviLens technology can help make independent navigation a reality. The Big Takeaways: NaviLens system uses improved QR technology with a new type of code made up of four colors that enables it to store more information than a black and white QR code. Using a smartphone, the NaviLens app scans the area. Once it picks up the unique NaviLens code, the app provides the embedded information audibly to the user along with their distance/directionality from the code. As long as the code appears anywhere in the field of view of the smartphone camera, the code is detected and information is delivered. NaviLens is more accurate than GPS technology because it takes into account smaller distances that are crucial to navigation for people who are visually impaired. NaviLens codes can be read up to 12 times farther away than QR or bar codes as well as at 160-degree angle. Future advances to the NaviLens technology include a 360-degree technology that will register and retain the user's location so the system can still tell where they are, and guide them to the destination even if they lose contact with the code. In addition, the NaviLens GO app uses advanced technology to help users navigate indoor spaces such as stores and to locate items in the store. This technology is elegant, inexpensive, flexible, easy to use, and fits seamlessly into a user's life. While already part of public transportation in Barcelona, cities like New York City are testing it and hope to make this technology a more integral part of their public transportation system. Tweetables “Public transportation is the answer to so much inequity across all urban areas, and nonurban areas. If we can work to make the system as safe as possible for any range of abilities, that would be an enormous win, and huge piece making public transit truly public transit.” – Mira Philipson, Systemwide Accessibility Analyst, Metropolitan Transportation Authority New York City Transit “I could walk down the hallway and it's telling me when I've arrived at this department and the door is right in front of me — it really gives me that autonomy that I really crave.” - Ed Plumacher, Adaptive Technology Specialist, Lighthouse Guild “We began in public transportation because for us and the users on our team, it is super important to make public transportation more accessible.” - Javier Pita, Founder and CEO NaviLens “Accessibility needs to be built into products, websites, software, whatever it is, from the ground up, because it will just lead to a better product overall.” Gian Carlo Pedulla, Supervisor, NYC Department of Education and Member, Advisory Committee for Transit Accessibility, Metropolitan Transportation Authority New York City Transit Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss. “Your Hit Parade” was an American radio and television music program that was broadcast from 1935 to 1959. It was sponsored by American Tobacco's Lucky Strike cigarettes. During this 24-year run, the show had 19 orchestra leaders and 52 singers or groups. Not surprisingly, listeners were informed that the "Your Hit Parade survey checks the best sellers on sheet music and phonograph records, the songs most heard on the air and most played on the automatic coin machines, an accurate, authentic tabulation of America's taste in popular music." However, the exact procedure of this "authentic tabulation" remained a secret. Here are 21 hits from 1950. Follow @mursetcarolyn Hello, and welcome! You’re listening to Song Stories, Quiet Stories. This is podcast Episode number 8, Ghost Stories by Gary Payne. I am your host, Carolyn Murset. We interrupt our regular programming because it will soon be Halloween. It’s nothing to be afraid of, unless you’ve tried to move to a different location in order to retire and your respite lasts all of a couple of weeks. You may not have seen Gary Payne onstage here in southern Utah. For the past decade and a half, practically every time I’ve attended or volunteered at a cultural event, Mr. Payne, the unsung hero of the local theater scene has been there, too, sometimes ushering, or taking tickets. But most of the time he’s served before the play even opens, building sets or gathering props. I’ve watched him herd large performing groups at important fundraisers, too. Frightening? Absolutely. His fearless life focuses on God First, Family 2nd and supporting the community he lives in, 3rd. At the young age of eight, Gary began collecting music and was a Disk Jockey for an Ice Arena, school and church dances and private parties. Around music all of his life, he doesn’t play an instrument or sing a note. Scary? You decide. This gentleman hikes, travels, serves others in his church congregation, enjoys photography and the theater. So why his fascination with ghosts, none other than the previous inhabitants of wherever and whatever the living now occupy? Shy and reserved, and getting sick to his stomach at a young age if he had to be on stage, preferring behind the scenes to the spotlight, Gary now finds solace and strength putting pen to paper. Follow me now, to The Apple Tree, and then listen to The Golden Shovel. You’ve just listened and perhaps, shivered, to Song Stories, Quiet Stories Episode eight, Ghost Stories, by Gary Payne. Come back next time for the first bonus episode of the new musical. Tales of Tila. Before you do, answer and write about these questions: “What things have you borrowed that you couldn’t return? What kind of treasures do you search for?” You haven’t found any yet? Look in front of you. You might be surprised to find something wonderful that’s been there all along.” Grandma Tila will join me soon and tell of more mischief she accomplished as a child, and as an adult. Are you surprised? Subscribe to this podcast here my website, mycarolynmurset.com, or at iTunes or Google Play, so you don’t miss a thing. Check out my events and my store page, and keep those earbuds in your pocket more often. Go and talk to someone. In person. Face to face. Volunteer for a worthy cause and tell Gary Payne “hello” for me. Find his name in the playbill or program for whatever local theatrical or musical production or fundraiser you’re attending. This is your host, Carolyn Murset.

Two initial packed hours leading up to a two hour guest mix from our friend Dubi. Lots of intricate IDM & downtempo. A good calm before the 200 storm.
This episode is an interview with sommelier and Madeira expert Michael Scaffidi. Some of the things we discuss in this wide-ranging conversation include: How Michael changed his career aspirations from music mogul to wine expert, which led him to become a sommelier at some of the most influential restaurants in the country. Why Madeira has such a special place in the world of fortified wines - including stories about 300-year-old bottles, burning islands, and eye-patch-wearing explorers. The principle grapes, styles, and label claims that will help you decide which variety of Madeira is right for you next time you visit the liquor store. The similarities between a master sommelier and an expert Disk Jockey. What to drink when you’re hanging out with Shaquille O’Neil, and much, much more.

Born Mokgadi Moloko Mabela in Soweto and raised in Polokwane; Moloko is a driven, ambitious Disk Jockey and Radio Presenter on Unisa Radio. From a family of very outspoken individuals, the fascination of radio and tv’s ability to capture listeners and audiences worldwide made Moloko always know she wanted to talk and entertain for a living. In 2008 DJ Moloko met Victor “SuckaV” Ledwaba; a passionate music lover, DJ and sound guru who introduced to a whole new world of music, events and artists. It was then that Moloko realised that her passion was within reach. 2010 availed an opportunity to learn how to DJ at the Fabulush DJ Academy. With the talented 5fm featured DJ Lindi Lush as a mentor, Moloko fast learnt how to get her way around the decks and has not looked back since. Moloko is inspired by various unique aspects that different artists offer to the global industry, especially smart workers who are able to turn their love for the arts into sustainable careers. In her spare time, Moloko enjoys travelling and reading a good book. But having played in and around most (if not all) Pretoria and Joburg's best clubs, she is widely known as a Club Disk Jockey and enjoys playing Electro and Deep/Soulful House music. This is one of her earlier recorded tapes that was never released and was kept in archives. We at Deep Buttered Jams are honoured to host it as a guest-mix. Troy Anderson joins us to talk about our very first animated filmmaker, the audacious and highly original Ralph Bakshi. We mainly focus on his adaptation of THE LORD OF THE RINGS as well as his unique look back at American history with AMERICAN POP, but we definitely touch upon some more of his lesser known work as well. Towards the end, we realize that a 2nd episode may come into fruition in the future simply because there's a lot to be said about this incredibly unique artist. In addition, Jim had time to take a stroll with Mike Birbiglia's rather charming SLEEPWALK WITH ME, Troy discusses BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS PART ONE and SWEET KILL, while Patrick takes a look at an animated short entitled DISKJOCKEY, which is linked in the show notes. In a couple weeks we will be talking with Damon Houx about the great Wong Kar-Wai. The two films we will be focusing on CHUNGKING EXPRESS and IN THE MOOD OF LOVE so feel free to watch them before the show and send us your thoughts. Please be sure to leave us a voicemail to play on the show at 224-366-9528. If you’re a movie blogger/podcaster and would like a guest spot on the show to talk about a filmmaker whose work you admire. Thanks again for listening and be sure to check out our updated upcoming schedule in the sidebar to see which directors we’ll be talking about soon!
