It is increasingly difficult to find students at the collegiate level who know how to engage in spirited, rigorous, but amiable debate about important matters. Grandstanding, emotive outbursts calculated to silence opposition, and the recitation of prefabricated talking points mark much of the environment. Rather than seeking to expose the truth, much of what counts for debate is actually aimed at domination and manifests an unhealthy conformance to the reigning ideas of a school of thought or a political activist agenda. A proper training from a younger age in the art of seminar discussion would help contemporary college students navigate the choppy waters of young adulthood. This talk addressed how those of us who teach secondary students can create environments free, curious, and open for seminar discussions. It will address the goals of a seminar; the necessary habits and tools for a fruitful discussion; and common mistakes that spoil a seminar.Andrew J. At its best, teaching history helps our students recover their bearings in a world that increasingly makes it difficult to see and love the life we have together. Like being and nature, history is a concept of unity by which we get our minds around the whole of things: in this case, the whole of our existence as the past, the present, and the future. As a discipline within the humanities, history is the study of change in society as it moves in time. Change is a given, not an end. In order to grasp the significance of change, students of history must see the past in its pastness, neither as the present writ small nor as the occasion to condemn the past for not rising to their demands for what it should have been. In other words, they need to study the past observationally and sympathetically, free from anachronisms and moralizing. Finally, history is a way of interpreting our existence as a community that consists of the dead, the living, and the yet to be born. It is a way of seeing how we are responsible for one another across generations. To forget that unity is to lose ourselves. To remember it is to see ourselves as recipients of the life passed on by our forebears and as givers of life to our neighbors and to future generations.Andrew J. Zwerneman serves as Cana Academy's President and as one of our Master Teachers. For 39 years, he has taught and consulted in secondary schools that emphasize classic humanities. Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees
Do you fear rejection? Many of us are on high alert scanning what other people do and say for signs of potential rejection. We're desperate to avoid big feelings like rejection. And yet we have to feel to heal. Listen in as adoptee and mental health therapist Lisa shares her learnings about finding herself by feeling the big feelings. Here's more about Lisa from her website.Education · B.S. in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies, University of South Dakota 1989 · M.S. in Counseling and Human Resource Development, South Dakota State University 1997. Licenses and Certifications · Qualified Mental Health Professional · Licensed Professional Counselor – Mental Health · Licensed Addictions Counselor · Trust Based Relational Intervention Certified Practice Areas and Specialties· Adults/Individual Counseling · Depression/Anxiety .Trauma · Couple/Family therapy · Post-Adoption CoachingAfter completing her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of South Dakota, Lisa moved her budding career as a prevention specialist to the golden state of California. At a school in Pasadena, she first witnessed amazing resiliency working with gang kids abused from struggling neighborhoods. After a couple of years in the Los Angeles area, she felt drawn back home to Sioux Falls, SD where she decided to explore the possibility of a degree in interior design. Through investigation of this area of study, she realized that she was more interested in the interiors of people than the interiors of buildings. Reconstructing and enriching continue to be her passions whether in her career improving intangible human advancements or in her hobbies refurbishing physical structures. During her second round of college at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, she transitioned to a master's program in Counseling and Human Resource Development. All the while, she was employed part-time at a residential home for individuals with developmental delays and mental health issues. Following graduation, she accepted a position at Keystone Treatment Center in Sioux Falls as a Student Assistant Professional teaching mental health and drug prevention in large group assemblies for high school and college students. This led her to an opportunity at Southeastern Behavioral Health, a non-profit community mental health center, where she completed an eight-month internship before graduating with her master's degree (1997). Armed with a background in the addictions field, Lisa saw her clientele transitioning from chemical dependency to broader or co-morbid issues such as depression, anxiety, broken attachment, identity issues and trauma. As the number of foster and adopted children in her practice rose, she discovered her natural ability to relate to and interact with kids and their families as they were adjusting to significant life changes using art, pyschodrama, somatic processsing and music. With limited resources for post-adoption services in the local area, her practice was full, there were trainings at schools and churches, various speaking engagements and classes held. Hence, the dream of The Barn was born. Created as an office complex housing several independent counseling practitioners, The Barn succeeded in multiplying the number of hands to help with needs in the community. Coming full-cirlce, Lisa's efforts to help foster and adoptive families, is limited to teaching and supporting parents through consultation. Presently, she is happy to see adults and teens with various issues as her days of playing on the floor and orchestrating movement of the whole family systm are over. As a testament to her over 25 years working with the foster &/adopted children, Lisa published a book (see link below) in April of 2022 for parents, giving them knowledge and tools to help their children heal and recover from the trauma of orphanhood. In the meantime, she loves seeing individuals and couples with her longstanding practice, and she feels blessed to go to work everyday!https://www.amazon.com/s?k=orphan+dreams+and+nightmares&i=stripbooks&crid=2275J7NFVC4KZ&sprefix=orphan+dreams+and+nightmares%2Cstripbooks%2C94&ref=nb_sb_noss https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisa-stellinga-86724b11/https://www.facebook.com/LANWSD/

Treaty 7 is an agreement between the Canadian government and several, mainly Blackfoot, First Nation band governments in what is today Southern Alberta. The idea of developing treaties for Blackfoot lands was suggested to Blackfoot Chief Crowfoot in 1875. Negotiations were concluded two years later and on September 22, 1877, the agreement was signed at the present-day Siksika Nation reserve, east of Calgary. Chief Crowfoot was one of the signatories to Treaty 7. Another signing of this treaty occurred December 4, 1877 to accommodate other Blackfoot leaders who were not present at the primary September 1877 signing. The Canadian government wanted the treaty to allow them to build the railroad across Canada, but the implications for the Indigenous people after the signing of Treaty 7 were mainly suffering and hardship. The buffalo disappeared rapidly and the promised support from Canada's government to help transition the First Nations bands into an agricultural lifestyle did largely not happen. The speaker will argue that overall, the treaty did not have the positive impact for Indigenous Peoples that they initially believed it would. When comparing the difference in cultures during the treaty negotiations, it is likely the Indigenous population was misinformed/misguided by the settlers at the time, who strongly insisted that the treaty be a written document, not an oral agreement that Indigenous Peoples better understand. Speaker: Dr. Mike Bruised Head (or in the Blackfoot language, Ninna Piksii) Mike Bruised Head graduated from St Mary's High school on the Blood Reserve in 1976. Received Bachelors of Arts Degree (BA) from University of Lethbridge in 1980. Served on Blood Tribe Chief and Council 1981 to 1983. Employed at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College in 1984-85 as College Administrator. Executive Director of Sikoohkotoki Friendship Center from 1986 to 1994. Convocated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from U of L. Employed by Kainai Board of Education as a high school teacher, vice principal and principle from 1996 to 2011. Obtained a Master's Degree (MA) from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington (2003) in Administration and Supervision. Elected to Blood Tribe Chief and Council from 2011 to 2016. Formally created Kainai Ecosystems Protection Agency (KEPA) and served as chair for KEPA from 2012 to 2016. Serves on the Oldman Watershed Council and participates on the Crown of the Continent Roundtable Leadership Committee and Crown Partners. Involved in Kainai ceremonies and cultural events. Speaks Blackfoot fluently. Presently serving as president of the University of Lethbridge Iniskim Indigenous Alumni Chapter and Chairman of the Kainai Board of Education. Beth and Joe of the Maryland Forests Association sat down to talk to me about a "Faces of Forestry" program they have. We are featuring guests of this program on the Talking Forests podcast once a month. We hope you all gain insight from these guests about the forest sector and how each job in the entire supply chain is very important. Elizabeth Hill: Beth is the executive director of Maryland Forests Association and a resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland with more than 20 years' experience in the forest sector. She previously served as the General Manager of Dorchester Lumber Company Inc., a family owned business founded in 1950. In her leadership role, she saw that the company provided quality products in a healthy, safe work environment, while promoting sustainable forestry practices. “Forestry is the highest and best use for land to protect the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. Most people have no idea how important or vast the forestry industry is,” Hill said. MFA worked with BEACON, the Business Economic and Community Outreach Network at Salisbury University, with the support of the Maryland Agricultural and Resource-Based Industries Development Corporation (MARBIDCO), conducted an economic impact study to measure the importance of Maryland's resource-based industries. Using the latest data from 2015, the report found that Maryland's forestry sector contributed nearly $3.5 billion to the State's economy, supported 15,271 jobs, and nearly $133 million in State and local tax revenue. Beth resides in Dorchester County with her husband and two children and is an active member of her community. Joe Hinson: President of Maryland Forests Association and President and he works with Northwest Natural Resource Group as main forester. He has over 25 years' experience in helping private landowners, agencies, industry, and legislative bodies resolve natural resource conflicts. He was named by former Idaho Governor Cecil Andrus to represent timber industry in negotiating process to implement state's "anti-degradation" policy. He was director of private forestry programs for the National Forest Products Association, Washington D.C. (1977-1982). Education: B.S. in Forest Resource Management, West Virginia University, 1971. His unique self-taught style of piano play has earned him distinction among his peers, praise from the media and accolades across the music industry. Marcus is on the cutting edge of ‘Euro Jazz' having formed JURIS, a musical collaboration with acclaimed Parisian DJ and producer Young Pulse. The duo quickly developed a name within the international music community, enjoying large-scale performances and preparing a Q3 release of their latest project entitled “Eiffel Tower.” Johnson's FLO Brands, LLC,tm is aptly titledFor the Love Of ; LLC. ™ FLO began as a musical publishing, production, and lifestyle branding company to house all of Johnson's musical and entrepreneurial ventures. A graduate of Howard University, Johnson went on to simultaneously earn both his MBA and Juris Doctorate degrees at Georgetown University. One year later, he releasedInter Alia, with great acclaim. These two albums led to Johnson signing with N2K Encoded Music with whom he released several CDs until the label was sold in 1998. Johnson's success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson who invested in Marcus and his newfound company, Marimelj Entertainment Group (MEG). Under their partnership, MEG's label, Three Keys Music based in the Washington, DC metro area, established its own full service recording studio, Studio 8121; and two music publishing companies, Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing.
