Hometown Radio 09/09/25 6p: Barry Rands discusses the idea of a road tax for electric vehicles
Marc Tarpenning is Co-founder of Tesla and a venture partner at Spero Ventures. In 2003, Marc and Martin Eberhard saw two signals: GM killed its beloved EV1, and Californians snapped up Toyota's Prius despite its compromises. They realized the market was ready for an electric car that was better than gas, not worse. Their breakthrough: 7,000 off-the-shelf laptop batteries powering a sports car that outran a Porsche and drove over 200 miles. The Tesla Roadster was born, before Elon Musk joined the company.Marc shares how his time in Saudi Arabia exposed him to oil dependence, how NuvoMedia taught him about the pace of battery improvement, and why a software mindset helped Tesla out-innovate incumbents. Now at Spero Ventures, Marc backs founders building solutions that are both economically compelling and environmentally vital, and explains why, to him, EVs have already won.Episode recorded on Aug 12, 2025 (Published on Sept 9, 2025)In this episode, we cover: [05:58] Marc's experience fixing software projects in Saudi Arabia[07:06] Why TELO's compact electric pickup makes sense[09:09] Marc's Star Trek optimism versus Blade Runner dystopia[10:29] On founding NuvoMedia and the first e-book readers[17:40] Brainstorming EVs after the dot-com collapse[20:25] Prius demand proves customers value efficiency[22:18] Reducing oil dependence as national security[24:46] Roadster powered by 7,000 laptop lithium-ion cells[30:28] The Tesla launch playbook[32:14] Acceleration as the hook for high-end EV buyers[37:20] Early interactions with Elon Musk at SpaceX office[40:11] Lessons from early Roadster builds[43:36] Vertical integration only where it truly differentiates[48:15] Why EVs are inevitable[50:30] Marc's thoughts on Tesla today Enjoyed this episode? Henk van Alphen was born and raised in Holland. After serving in the army, he sought adventure and travelled to Canada where he and his girlfriend took a float plane into the wilderness, built a cabin, hunted and fished, and lived off the land for a year. It took them seven days to walk back into civilization. Henk then went to college in Canada and began to work part time for a mining operation. His wilderness experience was a perfect match for the needs of mining developers who relied on "grubstakers" to trek into the wild, searching for mineral deposits to develop mines.Henk's career in mining began in Canada, and then led him to extensive works in Argentina, Chile, and other South American countries. He was agnostic about what minerals he sought to develop... working with coal, iron ore, gold, silver, copper, zinc, uranium, and ultimately lithium. He discusses the process of developing mine sites... noting his style and business model of working collaboratively with indigenous populations, making them part of the process which ultimately led to longer term successes. The conversation then shifts to lithium mining. Henk discusses where lithium is found - in brine, clay, and pegmatites - and how it is mined. His work involved extracting lithium from brine in "salars" or drying lakes. This was not well received because in arid countries, solar evaporation of the brine wastes precious water... so he and his colleagues have focused on DLE or Direct Lithium Extraction.Ted and Henk discuss the value of lithium, a mineral at the core of the clean energy revolution. Henk is articulate about the role of lithium in electric vehicles, and in laptops and cellphones. He notes China's preeminence in this field. While other battery chemistries are being examined, Henk notes that advances in lithium batteries are extending EV's range, making EVs clear winners in the automotive future. And he posits that lithium will be with us for some time even if other chemistries are promising and may ultimately replace lithium. That will be, he jokes, when he is six feet under!
If you're after the latest reviews of some three-row crossovers of varying sizes, then you're listening to the right podcast! The Unnamed Automotive Podcast starts off with Benjamin's review of the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander, loaded with three rows and a gas-powered motor, the Outlander begins to boil Sami's blood due to its lack of competitiveness in a field full of excellent options. Benjamin has more than a few nice things to say about the Outlander, but none of them are about the barely-useable third row. Then Sami chimes in about his plug-in experience with the 2025.5 Volvo XC90. Loaded with 455 ponies and 30-ish miles of range, the XC90 is sure to be a hit. But then Sami's attention turns to the Swedish automakers attempts at designing an infotainment system, and things fall apart a bit. While not as bad as the EX90, the XC90 has a few glitches of its own that make it hard to recommend. Then it's time for a classic Nissan Pathfinder cow adventure. Thanks for listening!

In this podcast hosted by Silicon Valley Bank Climate Tech & Sustainability SVP Maggie Wong, CEO & Co-Founder of 3V Infrastructure Aubrey Gunnels will be speaking on the importance of charging infrastructure for electric vehicle adoption, a product's revenue model to enable sustainable growth, and aligning the appropriate capital sources with a climate tech solution.
Our guest on this week's episode is John Lash, group vice president of product strategy at e2open. Last week the de minimis exemption ended. This tariff exemption applied to imports on low-value goods. Our guest shares how its loss will affect supply chains and impact small importers in particular. Will this limit consumer choice? There was some steady movement in recent years for adopting electric vehicles, but now with course changes in Washington, it seems that EVs have hit some speed bumps. While growth continues, it has slowed compared to adoption in other countries. We look at both the growth of both electric automobiles and industrial trucks and the factors affecting the advancement of EVs in the American market. How do supply chain managers measure performance and try to get a little better year after year? And how do you measure your contractors' performance and make sure they meet your standards? The answer is often KPIs, key performance indicators. It's a way to pick a measurable part of the process that you put a number on, and track its progress. But it turns out that various sectors throughout the economy use KPIs in different ways to measure and improve their supply chain performance. Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. "We're not addressing human behavior—we're just trying to show that we did something."In this impactful episode of The Fleet Success Show, host Steve Saltzgiver sits down with 2024 Fleet Hall of Fame inductee Matthew Betz. With more than five decades in the fleet world, Betz has seen it all—from selling fleet solutions at Wheels Inc. to building out Detroit's EV infrastructure at DTE Energy. But perhaps most compelling is his recent mission: transforming fleet safety by understanding human behavior. The conversation dives deep into Betz's career evolution, including his leadership roles at NAFA and AFLA, the surprising challenges in launching an electric fleet at DTE, and why traditional driver training is failing. Together with behavioral psychologists (including his daughter!), Betz now focuses on empowering supervisors to become safety coaches—an idea that could redefine fleet risk management.Fleet managers will walk away with real-world insights into EV adoption, stakeholder engagement, and a new lens on fleet safety that goes far beyond checklists and telematics dashboards. Key Takeaways:Behavior Drives Safety: Most safety training fails because it ignores root causes. Changing driver behavior starts with understanding why people drive the way they do. Train the Coach, Not the Driver: Betz advocates for supervisor-led coaching rather than automated training modules. EV Adoption Is Hard—but Worth It: Infrastructure, range anxiety, and cultural resistance are all major hurdles, but thoughtful planning and change management can overcome them. Data Overload is Real: Fleet managers are overwhelmed with telematics. Success lies in surfacing actionable insights—not just data. Fleet Needs a Seat at the Table: Top-performing fleets are integrated with organizational leadership and strategy. Speaker Bios:Matthew BetzMatthew Betz is a fleet industry legend, boasting a 50+ year career that spans fleet leasing, consulting, OEM partnerships, and utility fleet management. A former VP at Wheels Inc., Betz later spearheaded the electric fleet initiative at DTE Energy. He's a past president of AFLA, a longtime NAFA board member, and was inducted into the Fleet Hall of Fame in 2024. Today, he leads Orc Creek Fleet Consulting and works closely with behavioral science firm ABA Technologies to revolutionize fleet safety.Steve SaltzgiverSteve Saltzgiver is a veteran fleet executive, consultant, and host of The Fleet Success Show. Hometown Radio 09/02/25 4p: Barry Rands discusses the idea of a road tax for electric vehicles
Interesting, informative, and entertaining article by Chris Stokes, who has over half a decade of using EVs on the Irish roads now. We asked him all the usual questions, what worked, what didn't, would you did it all over again, his answers are considered and thoughtful. If you would like to share your experiences of using an EV them drop us a line, and we would be happy to feature further perspectives on Ireland's journey to a greener driving experience. EVs the pros and cons I bought my 1st ev in 2019, which maybe just about qualifies me for the status of 'early adopter'. Being a middle aged man that kind of kudos is important to me, more so than any other possible advantage that might accrue from owning a reasonably nice car. And reasonably nice covers it quite well. It was a 2nd hand e-golf, less than a year old and I brought it in from the UK. I was never a car guy and this was the most i had ever spent on one. There were a few reasons why I decided to go for an EV and at this time. Mostly my old diesel ford focus had started to throw random bills at me as it entered into its twilight years. I could see the writing on the wall, it was going to break down some where inconvenient at some point. I'm of the opinion that if you need a car then this is the only good reason to change it - financially, environmentally, the best option is no car followed by drive your car until it dies. Not knowing much about cars, being cautious when spending money and being the kind of person that researches to the point of internet rabbit holes, I did fair amount of reading. Eventually I was convinced, or had convinced myself, that electric was the way forward. Electric motors are relatively simple and efficient things, far less likely to break then their petrol or engine equivalents. Less things to break, less things to service. Electric cars are cheaper to run (if you can charge at home). They are quieter, more comfortable. They tend to come with far more technology and addons compared to their ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) equivalents. And they do have less of an impact on the environment, every serious study I have read backs this up. They are not 'good' for the environment. They are 'less bad'. After about 12months of reading various forums and being told that my steering links would soon fail on my ford focus, I found a car. At this time (2019) there wasn't a lot of choice at my price point. The second hand market basically came down to a Nissan Leaf, a Hyundai Ioniq or a VW e-golf. The Leaf had Chademo charging architecture, a dying standard that would (is) becomingly harder to find so making public charging even more difficult (similar to buying a beta max video player back in the day). The Ioniq didn't look like it would take my bike rack very well (an all glass lid on the boot). So by default it was e-golf or nothing. I was fortunate in that VRT on cars purchased in the UK was not a thing - this changed in 2021 with the implementation of Brexit. So I got a good deal in the UK, and drove home, my first all electric trip being from Milton Keynes to Holyhead, around 400km on a 200km range car. And it was great. I had lots of time, I had extensively researched charging in the UK and had a number of possible stops lined up to allow for any unforeseens. I glided home, enjoying all the things that weren't in a 15 year old diesel (navigation, spotify, cruise control, lane assist, instant heat….) And when I got to the ferry they waved me to the front of the queue so I could drive in and charge my car on board (for free!). It was like I had joined some kind of exclusive club where i was just a little bit better than everyone else. Smug. I kept the e-golf for 18months and it might still be the best car I ever had. Solid like a VW golf is (was?) renowned for, everything worked. But the range. 200km. We're a one car family. We have relatives either end of the country. With a small child. It was manageable but more range is nice… I traded in ...

Our hosts have plenty of energy and stuff to talk about following Benjamin's road-trip vacation. After Benjamin's discussion of hot dog prices and charitable clowns, this weeks show starts off with a review of the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60. With over 350 miles of range on tap, this EV should have been the perfect chariot for a road trip, but Benjamin did have a few issues along his trip. Additionally, the guys go into a deep discussion about carbon fiber, clamshell hoods, and other premium EVs. Then Sami goes nuts over news following this year's Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Concours. From Lexus to Infiniti to Nissan and BMW, there's all kinds of fun news to pour over, and laugh about. Thanks for listening!
Kiwis have racked up more than a billion dollars in green loans for energy efficient items like EVs, solar panels, and heat pumps. BNZ, ASB, and ANZ all lend up to $80 thousand on a 1% interest rate over three years. Massey University Banking Expert Claire Matthews says these are small loans, meaning the banks are pumping them out, while not actually lending a huge amount. She told Mike Hosking customers still have to go through the same process as loans with higher interest rates, and go through affordability checks. The federal government has earmarked $22.7 million to install 500 electric vehicle charging stations in B.C., which comes ahead of the province's 2026 mandate to make all new car sales zero-emission. Clean Energy Canada program manager Evan Pivnick joins the show to discuss EV infrastructure in the province. A new poll by the Energy Futures Institute suggests interest in purchasing electric vehicles is waning. Institute chair Barry Penner joins the show as we ask viewers if they are still interested in EVs.
EV growth is moving, but is it moving quickly enough? Wood Mackenzie research projects battery electric vehicles to account for 58% of light vehicle sales globally by 2050. It won't be until 2045 that EVs surpass ICE vehicles on the roads globally. So how can consumers be incentivized to get an EV? Manufacturers are addressing concerns around range anxiety and price, so what else is there to tempt buyers? Perhaps shifting the conversation from EVs as just low-carbon emitting cars to seeing them as energy assets might do the trick. Could vehicles reliably charge your house? Or even stabilize the grid during peak demand? To find out, host Sylvia Leyva Martinez speaks with GM Energy's Aseem Kapur about their two-way charging EV project. They explore the potential of vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid systems, the lessons from early pilots, the importance of interoperability standards, and how incentives and customer trust will drive EV adoption – something that needs to accelerate if we're to stay on track for climate goals. The key questions to answer on the viability of using EVs as DERs: Why should EV owners risk their battery health and daily mobility needs to support the grid? With thousands of utilities across the US, can one interoperable system realistically work at scale? Will incentives be strong enough to convince consumers and utilities that EVs are more than just cars?Sylvia gets the answers.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In today's episode, Robert is joined by Sandy Munro, a leading figure in engineering and a passionate advocate for battery electric vehicles. Together, they delve into the growing shortage of tradespeople, toolmakers, and engineers, and why attracting fresh talent into these critical fields is more urgent than ever. The conversation covers a wide range of topics, from Telo's innovative compact electric truck to Redwood's work in battery recycling and creating a circular supply chain. They also unpack common misconceptions about EV costs and clean energy, while exploring how businesses can make the transition to more sustainable power sources. To round out the discussion, Robert and Sandy take a step back to examine the state of the EV market as a whole, and the outdated regulations that continue to slow down meaningful progress. 00:00 Introduction 05:00 Increased Sales in the US 08:40 Ford Announcement 11:15 Telo Truck 16:10 Shortage of Tradesmen & Engineers 22:10 Redwood Battery Recycling 27:00 Debunking Cost Myths 28:45 Bringing Clean Energy to Businesses 29:50 Solar Panels 34:10 EVs 40:00 Restrictions & Legacy Rules 43:00 Lucid Vehicles 44:40 Ford 46:30 Shortage of Tradesmen & Engineers 48:00 General Electric History 51:50 Made in China @fullychargedshow @EverythingElectricShow Why not come and join us at our next Everything Electric expo: https://everythingelectric.show Check out our sister channel Everything Electric CARS: https://www.youtube.com/@fullychargedshow Support our StopBurningStuff campaign: https://www.patreon.com/STOPBurningStuff Become an Everything Electric Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/fullychargedshow Buy the Fully Charged Guide to Electric Vehicles & Clean Energy : https://buff.ly/2GybGt0 Subscribe for episode alerts and the Everything Electric newsletter: https://fullycharged.show/zap-sign-up/ Visit: https://FullyCharged.Show Find us on X: https://x.com/Everyth1ngElec Follow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/officialeverythingelectric To partner, exhibit or sponsor at our award-winning expos email: commercial@fullycharged.show Everything Electric VANCOUVER - Vancouver Convention Center - 5th, 6th & 7th September 2025 Everything Electric FARNBOROUGH - Farnborough International - 11th & 12th October 2025 Everything Electric MELBOURNE - Melbourne Showgrounds 14th, 15th & 16th November 2025 #fullychargedshow #everythingelectricshow #homeenergy #cleanenergy #battery #electriccars #electric-vehicles-uk #electricvehicles #evs #renewableenergy
Benjamin fires up the show with his take on the 2026 Cadillac Vistiq, an electric three-row crossover that seems to be replacing Caddy;s own XT6. With 102 kWh of battery on tap, and over 600 hp, this is a big player in the world of EVs, but what else makes it stand out? While the world of three-row EVs is relatively slim, Benjamin suggests that the Vistiq might have a chance to be the best in its class, if only GM could sort out some small teething issues first. Then the show turns towards plug-in hybrids, as Benjamin and Sami quickly discuss the 2025 Toyota Prius PHEV. Formerly crowned as car of the year, the guys pinpoint what makes this Prius special compared to previous ones, and whether this plug-in variant is one of the best commuter cars on the market. Thanks for listening!

On this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, analysis and takeaways on two major announcements related to the future of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure.Joann Muller, who writes the Axios Future of Mobility newsletter, discusses her coverage of an announcement from Ford Motor Co. on Monday, Aug. 11, billed ahead of time as the next "Model T moment." As she wrote in her coverage, "The headline is that Ford will introduce a new family of EVs priced under $40,000 and will use a new manufacturing process to try to make them profitably." In 2024, MDOT awarded a state Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) grant to the Calhoun County Road Department (CCRD) for road improvements related to Ford Motor Co.'s BlueOval Battery Park that will improve safety, reduce congestion and support 1,700 new jobs and $2.5 billion of private investment in Emmett and Marshall townships. Later, Muller discusses an announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), also this week, about new guidance for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which surprised many who feared a withdrawal of funding. USDOT is reopening the spigot for federally funded EV chargers after freezing the program (created in the previous administration) for six months. "If Congress is requiring the federal government to support charging stations, let's cut the waste and do it right," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement Tuesday, Aug. 12.
President Trump's tax and spending bill will end a program offering up to $7,500 for Americans who buy electric cars. But you still have a little more time to claim the tax credit. On this episode of Possibly, we break down what potential car buyers need to know.

If you've been on the fence about whether to get an electric vehicle, now might be a good time to buy or lease one. A federal tax credit that lowers the cost of EVs is set to expire at the end of September — much earlier than planned. The change is part of President Donald Trump's major tax and spending bill, which eliminated several incentives for electric vehicles. EVs have come a long way in the last few years. They made up nearly 8 percent of new cars sold last year in Minnesota and more than 100 electric vehicle models are now for sale in the U.S. (A side-by-side comparison of models can be found here.) MPR News host Angela Davis talks with her guests about how public funding changes could affect the shift to electric, if now is a good time to swap the pump for a plug, and how far you can really go on a charge. Guests: Jukka Kukkonen is the founder of Shift2Electric, a Minnesota-based electric vehicle consulting and training company. He's also an instructor at the University of St. Thomas where he teaches courses about the EV market and technologies. Katelyn Bocklund is the facilitator of Drive Electric Minnesota, a coalition that works to make electric vehicles more mainstream and easier to use in Minnesota. She's also a senior program manager of transportation at the nonprofit policy organization Great Plains Institute.
This week, the Unnamed Automotive Podcast jams out with some subcompact crossovers. The show starts with Sami's review of the 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric, a perfectly fine EV that is a bit overshadowed by its market. With the competition offering better value, Sami and Benjamin argue that a used Hyundai Kona Electric is the smart choice for EV shoppers on a tight budget. Then the guys turn their focus to the 2026 Honda HR-V. Using Sami's previous experience as background information on his tester, Benjamin starts off thinking the Honda subcompact is pretty solid, but after spending more time with it, he wonders if there's a worse choice in the segment. Thanks for listening!
Wednesday morning Alana Goodman of the Washington Free Beacon reported that a gentleman named Pin Ni, who is a US-based executive with luxury electric car maker KARMA Automotive gave $50,000 over two contributions to the gubernatorial campaign of former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger. Ni, more troubling, listed as a member of the Chinese Communist Party. US Election law prohibits campaign contributions from foreign nationals, and the Chinese government insists that you renounce your Citizenship in order to qualify for US dual citizenship. So, one or the other must be true. For Spanberger, a big contribution from an Electric Vehicle manufacturer that would certainly have an interest in making sure that the Virginia Clean Economy Act doesn't get change or go away is problematic. Doubly ironic given the amount of angst that was expressed by the Democratic party leadership in 2021 about Glenn Youngkin's extensive business ties having been CEO of the Carlyse Group before being elected Governor. However, that isn't nearly the crime that accepting a political donation from a foreign national would be. The Beacon story says that Ni sits on the board of directors for the Wanxiang Group, which he founded in 1994. The company's 2025 annual report says that Ni had "been recognized" as an "Outstanding Communist Party Member of the Group" 15 times. Spanberger needs to address this but without any debates scheduled, Earle-Sears may not get a direct chance so it's up to the Virginia press corps. Before the story came out the Daily Signal spoke with Republican Party of Virginia Chair, State Senator Mark Peake about President Trump's statements regarding endorsing Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in her race against Spanberger and her unwillingness to debate and that is the podcast you are about to listen to. After seeing the story, he told us; “It doesn't surprise me that Chinese communists want Spanberger to win. I am sure they have reviewed her voting record in Congress and prefer her to a true, conservative patriot like Winsome Sears.” Keep Up With The Daily Signal Sign up for our email newsletters: https://www.dailysignal.com/email Subscribe to our other shows: The Tony Kinnett Cast: https://open.spotify.com/show/7AFk8xjiOOBEynVg3JiN6g The Signal Sitdown: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2026390376 Problematic Women: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL7765680741 Victor Davis Hanson: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL9809784327 Follow The Daily Signal: X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=DailySignal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailysignal/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDailySignalNews/ Truth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@DailySignal YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/dailysignal?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and never miss an episode.
