Ep. 360 - The Religion of Self-Care Guarding Against the Self-Obsessed Wellness Culture

Atheism is often pointed out as a religion, and in many ways, the obsession with health and wellness has become its own secular form of legalism. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar remind listeners that while bodily exercise is valuable, it can easily become idolatry if it replaces worship of the Lord. Gluttony has long been a silent sin, rarely addressed in churches, yet food can just as easily become an idol as the pursuit of beauty or fitness. The guys emphasize the need for balance: a pastor should not be marked by obvious gluttony, but at the same time, believers must avoid falling into the opposite extremes. Humans are wired to worship—so the question is, what or who are you worshiping? There is nothing wrong with caring for the body, but when the motive is self-glorification rather than glorifying God, the line has been crossed. Historically, Christians have been known for fasting, generosity, and blessing others, rather than being consumed by self-care. When self-care becomes an idol, it often reveals a fear of death and a desire to earn immortality. The truth is that the outer man is wasting away, and eternal life is found only in Christ. Motivation determines whether health is pursued as an idol or as stewardship of the temple of the Holy Spirit. Oscar shares that he lifts weights to maintain strength and longevity, aiming to serve God and his family well as he ages. E.Z. adds that part of his drive is to avoid becoming a burden to his children and to maximize his impact for the Lord. The wellness industry has grown worldwide, but combining wellness practices with paganism introduces another possible danger. Practices like meditation or yoga often promise salvation through Eastern philosophies, but they are just another form of legalism that cannot defeat death. Eternal youth is a false hope; eternal glory in Christ is the true answer. Believers should desire to live fully until they die, striving to honor God with their bodies. The guys emphasize the practical benefits of activity, pointing out that humans were not made for a sedentary life in front of screens. Exercising strengthens both body and mind, and tackling tough challenges builds confidence and resilience. At the same time, they warn against being judgmental toward others who practice moderation. Rest, too, is part of God's design, and the Sabbath reminds believers that they are not machines defined solely by their productivity. Ultimately, the message is simple: avoid gluttony and laziness, reject the idolization of beauty, view health as stewardship, and above all, love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.Send us a textThanks for listening! We don't have the power to transform the culture we live in, but we do have the power to be obedient to God. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses Satan's responses to God's movements. In the Old Testament book of 2 Chronicles, we read about King Hezekiah's obedience to the Lord, which brought about both a renewal of his culture and pushback, hardship, and threats from the enemy. However, as Pastor Allen shows, God is always faithful to intervene when we choose His ways. Like King Hezekiah, we will experience backlash when we live for Jesus—but if we will choose obedience to God in an unrelenting, courageous way, God will do what we can't: transform our culture.

When hate is loud, love cannot afford to whisper. When forces of oppression are on the move, lovers of freedom must respond. When those who seek to replace democracy with theocracy are gaining ground, those who are sworn to preserve and protect democracy must stand our ground. Jesus, of course, was neither oppressor nor hater nor promoter of theocracy. There are those who claim to speak for him at times, however, who are all of those things. One of the primary forces behind Project 2025 is a political movement called Christian Nationalism. Christian Nationalism speaks not of the teachings of Jesus - feeding the hungry, helping the poor, healing the sick, and kindness to the stranger. Their vision is not about love, but power - specifically a version of power that transgresses basic American Constitutional principles (subjugation of women, primacy of Christianity over other religions, and more). Progressive Christians are rising up in response, bringing to the theological as well as political sphere a voice that is much needed at this time. Theirs is a Jesus of the Gospels, recognizing that loving one another is indeed the salvation of the world. My guest in this interview is Brian Recker, author of HELL BENT: How the Fear of Hell Holds Christians Back from a Spirituality of Love. Recker, a former Evangelical pastor, is an influential figure in the Christian Deconstructionist Movement. He explains a journey taken by millions of Christians in America today. who feel strongly that a Jesus of love, not retribution, should guide our hearts. In the wake of national tragedy, God has ensured the Gospel will continue to go forward—using Charlie Kirk's assassination as a catalyst for renewal. Earlier this month, my dad—Franklin Graham—challenged those gathered at the annual Samaritan's Purse Prescription for Renewal Conference to boldly preach the Gospel, just as Charlie did. Today on Fearless we're bringing you his full talk from the medical missions conference—an encouragement for believers to be bold in standing for the Gospel during these pivotal times. My dad opened his message by highlighting Secretary of State Marco Rubio's call to salvation for all those gathered at (and the millions watching online) Charlie Kirk's memorial a few weeks ago. Senator Rubio's willingness to be so bold in his faith was incredible to watch, and should embolden us to do the same. My dad also shared pieces of his own testimony, plus stories working in the field with Samaritan's Purse—from our COVID-19 response in New York City to preparing to enter Gaza with lifesaving aid. Through it all, his message is clear: We no longer have a choice when it comes to proclaiming Jesus as Savior—now is the time to fearlessly preach what we believe, to everyone we meet.

As long as it’s in line with the Lord’s will and we have a peace about it, we just look through the door and go, ‘Which one’s more adventurous?’” - Dan Mathews “The more you have, it can become a distraction in a way that keeps you from fully experiencing what God has.” - Dan Mathews “Chasing a new job title or a bigger house or nicer car or more zeros in your bank account—at the end of the day, it just leaves you unfulfilled. Having time to do what we love, to share Jesus with people, to love on one another, to spend time with our kids, to go and see new places, that became our idea of success. If we don’t have the time to do what we love and to spend time with each other, then all other measures of success don’t matter.” - Dan Mathews “Adventure isn’t one-size-fits-all. Adventure can just be getting outside of your comfort zone and trying something new.” - Dan Mathews “God doesn’t want us to live a stagnant life. If you look through the stories in the Bible, you can’t find anywhere God is like, ‘Hey, just stay where you’re at. Don’t change a thing. Long-term, we just want you to hunker down and be comfortable.’ He’s always calling people. He’s telling people to go.” - Dan Mathews “Jesus welcomes us through tough questions. He says, ‘I see you, I understand you, my heart is breaking with you and I love you. And there is a bigger plan.’” - Jacob Robinson “[My son] Pierce is now profoundly deaf in both ears. He’s nonverbal, he’s epileptic, and he’s in a wheelchair. But he is the happiest little dude you’ll ever meet. He radiates joy. He sees life the way that I think Jesus wants us to see life. He doesn’t see your skin color. He doesn’t see how much money you make. He doesn’t see what car you drive or what your house looks like. He truly just wants to be with you, and I think that’s how Jesus would want us to live.” - Jacob Robinson “Don’t try to figure out your faith until you have a life experience that turns you upside down. Figure out what your faith is and lean into that faith when those times come, because Jesus promises us that challenges will come. The rich young ruler looked like he had it made. He's characterized by moral excellence and he's financially wealthy. He's got it so together that he even admits he doesn't have it all together—that there's still something he lacks. He isn't sure what it is. He's gotten to the top and realized, “I've almost made it.”  So he comes to Jesus and says, “I just need that one more step.” And Jesus gives him an outrageous, strong answer. Jesus tells him he's on a completely wrong road—that he's totally outside the kingdom of God. Unless we understand why the rich young ruler went away from Jesus grieved, we might be in danger of also being sent away. The rich young ruler went away grieving because 1) he talked to the real Jesus, 2) Jesus smashed two of his basic assumptions about how religion works, 3) Jesus got personal, and 4) he didn't understand treasure in heaven. With Trump's health visibly in decline, attention is shifting to Peter Thiel's invention, JD Vance, who may soon be president. Which means Thiel, a billionaire doomsday prepper who thinks the Anti-Christ is Greta Thunberg, could effectively rule the world. What does Thiel's obsession with the Anti-Christ reveal about how we can resist him? Thiel's worldview isn't just weird Silicon Valley paranoia; it's vintage fascist fan fiction. His ideas trace back to Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt, who justified Hitler's violent purges as necessary for “saving civilization.” Schmitt's argument was simple and horrifying: democracy is too weak, so we need a strongman to suspend the rules. Thiel recycles Schmitt's logic in a twenty-first-century sermon on why democracy itself is the real threat. In Thiel's version, collective action to solve global crises like man-made climate change is the definition of evil. So you know what to do, folks: double down on building collective action. In Part One of our conversation with journalist Gil Duran, of the Nerd Reich newsletter, that tracks Silicon Valley's billionaire Bond villains, we dig into Thiel's apocalyptic delusions, how they shape his politics, and why it's a very big deal that a man this afraid of democracy has his hands in everything from expanding government surveillance to election data. Part Two will be out this Thursday, with a special look at Thiel and Trump's Big Brother–their latest efforts to establish a Chinese-style surveillance state.  Want to hear Gaslit Nation ad-free? In a series of invitation-only, off-the-record lectures about Christianity, technology billionaire Peter Thiel said the antichrist is trying to regulate technology and billionaires. Which raises the question—Why do we always remake Christ in our image and the antichrist in our enemies'? Gen Z is making conservative Christianity more angry, intolerant, and illiberal. What's fueling the younger generation's interest in religious fundamentalism? Counter-terrorism expert Elizabeth Neumann is back to discuss the rising acceptance of political violence among young adults and why she expects things to get worse before they get better. It's Witness Wednesday! In this episode of Wretched Radio, Todd Friel, Todd interviews a student named William at Kennesaw State University. William, a political science major and Marine, engages in a thought-provoking conversation about his faith, value system, and the significance of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The discussion explores theological beliefs, the nature of God, human sinfulness, and salvation. Segment 1 • William describes his background, military service, and vague belief in "God and country." • Todd challenges William's notion of subjective truth. • William identifies as a Christian but admits to being unsure of the gospel and distant from church. Segment 2 • Todd presses William to articulate the gospel; William fumbles, focusing on general morality and Jesus' teachings. • Todd walks him through God's justice, sin, and the necessity of a Savior—not just moral improvement. • William acknowledges the significance but admits he rarely thinks about spiritual matters. Segment 3 • Todd walks through God's standard of holiness, exposing sin through thought life and the Ten Commandments. • William admits guilt and agrees he'd deserve punishment if judged by God's standards. • Todd explains penal substitution: Jesus took the wrath William deserves so he could be declared righteous. Segment 4 – What Does It Mean to Be Born Again? • Todd clarifies being born again: not baptism, but spiritual rebirth through repentance and faith. • William expresses openness but says he needs time; Todd warns delay is dangerous and urges urgent repentance. • Todd challenges William to respond to the gospel—not just ponder it. ___ Thanks for listening! Not every message, voice, or feeling we experience is from God. In our daily prayer and devotional, the apostle John warns believers to test the spirits because our emotions, cultural influences, or even spiritual opposition can lead us astray. God’s Spirit always aligns with His Word, glorifies Jesus, and produces peace and holiness in our hearts. When you face decisions or conflicting messages, take time to pray for discernment and measure everything against Scripture. If what you sense points you closer to Christ and aligns with biblical truth, you can move forward with confidence. If it distracts or divides, wait on God’s timing and continue seeking His direction. Discernment takes practice. The more time you spend in God’s Word and in prayer, the more clearly you’ll recognize His voice amid the noise of the world. God has promised to guide you faithfully—trust Him to do it in His way and His time. Today's Bible Reading: “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God… This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God…”— 1 John 4:1–3 (NIV) Key Takeaways Test every spirit. God’s truth never contradicts His Word. Keep Jesus central. The Holy Spirit’s leading always exalts Christ. Check the fruit. True guidance produces love, joy, peace, patience, and self-control. Wait on God’s timing. Rushing ahead often leads to confusion. Seek wise counsel. Godly community helps confirm God’s direction. Let’s Pray Dear God,Thank You for reminding me that not every spirit or voice I hear is from You. Forgive me for the times I’ve trusted my emotions or rushed ahead without seeking Your wisdom. Teach me to test the spirits and recognize what is truly from You. Guide me through Your Word and Your Spirit, and help me make choices that glorify Jesus. Guard my heart and mind from confusion, and let Your peace lead me.In Jesus’ name, Amen. Related Articles Looking for more on discernment and hearing God’s voice? Our country was founded by men who held to a biblical world view. Today, we struggle to apply the gift of our Framers... the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights...because we have accepted the ideological framework of the neo-Marxists. Instead of defying tyranny with the tools and authorities given to us by Jesus, we choose the paths of "might is right" and "he with the biggest stick wins." The neo-Marxist framing of the world has quietly corrupted our belief systems, leading us to a state of moral bankruptcy and cultural chaos. Choose God in all things. In the truest sense, Scott Allen is a missionary. He has spent years in impoverished countries helping address the crisis of starvation and poverty. His work focusses on building a biblical world view in our life. Rather than look at the world from the Neo-Marxist lens where all things are a result of an oppressor and all solutions are rooted in violence and struggles for power... Scott Allen has brought freedom to people through GOD, the love in Christ and the empowerment of a biblical world view. Turn to GOD for all things even in the darkest hours. In this Bible Story, Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem, the place where he would make his final sacrifice. There, he tells several parables. He makes a fig tree wither, flipps over the tables of corrupt money changers in the temple and tells a parable about a landowner whose son is killed. This story is inspired by Mark 11:12-25; 12:1-12. Once again, man's greed was getting in the way of true worship. Jesus, furious at this corruption of what was supposed to be holy, cleansed the temple and kicked out the greedy. On the way back to Bethany, the disciples saw a fig tree that Jesus had cursed earlier that day. This is part 1 of Burning Man 2025! Every year, Canary Cry Radio has been privileged and honored to send Basil Rosewater into Black Rock Desert to document what's going on at Burning Man, and to go preach the Good News to a group of people who are largely lost and seeking truth. The audio captured from this year was particularly fascinating and relevant. In this episode, we encounter Alex, a man who was tripping on acid who just so happened to find himself in the Camp of the Unknown God. His self prompted rants showed how people are desperate for some kind of transformative hope. We also hear from another stranger who sparked good conversation at the Camp of the Unknown God lead by Carl Teichrib. And we also document “Ranger Pedro” who ran a bible study on the Supernatural, tying it in with the Genesis 6 paradigm. The finale is part of this bible study on the supernatural, with Basil himself going on a solid compelling rant of his own. We hope you enjoy this episode! If you do, consider supporting us at https://CanaryCry.Support We will never advertise to you! Also visit https://BurningManResearch.com for the Canary Cry Archive on Burning Man research.

Paul encourages gentleness, peace, and humility toward all people. Paul then reminds Titus of their past, how they were once foolish and disobedient, but emphasizes the kindness and mercy of God, who saved them not by works but through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Justified by grace, believers are called to devote themselves to doing what is good. Paul warns against foolish controversies and divisive individuals who reject correction. These people are to be rejected. The letter closes with personal instructions and a call for believers to be productive and to meet urgent needs, ensuring that their lives reflect the fruit of grace. We were once lost, ruled by pride, anger, and selfish desires. We remember this not to shame ourselves, but to remain humble. God saved us through His astounding mercy. He washed us clean. He gave us new life through the Holy Spirit. We did nothing to earn it. We now live differently. We speak with kindness, choosing peace over arguments and divisive impulses. We pursue what is good, caring for others with urgency. We meet needs without delay, showing the world what grace has done in us. We remain devoted to good works, reflecting the goodness of God not only in belief but in action. We live purposefully, expecting others to be loving unifiers, because we have all been changed. Ever-present God, thank You for saving us, not because of what we have done, but because of who You are. Your kindness changed everything. You washed us clean. You gave us new life through the Holy Spirit. Help us to live in a way that honors that mercy. Teach us to speak with grace, to act with compassion, and to pursue what is good. Keep us from arguments that divide and distractions that weaken our identity in Jesus Christ. Let our lives reflect the beauty of Your grace and Your powerful renewal. May good works flow from hearts transformed by You. Thought Questions: How does your attitude toward the governing authorities and powerful entities show others the value of Jesus and His kingdom in your life?  Has the Holy Spirit renewed you, and has He been poured upon you richly through Jesus Christ? How will your life show this beautiful truth? Do Christians sometimes dispute and divide in ways that displease Jesus? How do you handle disagreements to ensure unity and love endure?
