Patrick rolls into conversations laced with humor, nostalgia, and unexpected listener questions. At one moment he deciphers a Beatles joke with the help of a caller, reminisces about seeing Paul McCartney live, and later fields encounters with Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons, addressing everything from religious debates to handling a stranger’s ashes. Unscripted, he answers difficult questions around concubines in scripture and the challenge of eternal punishment, balancing theological depth with bursts of laughter when “karaoke” performances sneak into the mix. Susan - When the Beatles got famous, boys started not getting haircuts as often which is probably what affected that guy’s business and his family. (01:57) Calvin - The last time Jehovah’s Witnesses gave me a Watch Tower magazine, I told them to convert to Catholicism, and they ran away across the street. (06:24) Brian - I noticed that the only state with a balanced budget and a well-run government is Salt Lake City, UT. Maybe we should take some notes from UT. (09:25) Chris (email) - It seems 7th Day Adventist twist bible verses and take them out of context to fit their views. (12:25) Juan - My friend has cremated remains and I was trying to get them buried. What should we do with them? (14:31) Ron - I had an encounter with Jehovah’s Witnesses and one of them was an elder and one was an ex-catholic. I was able to debate them and then they just left. (19:50) Deacon Shawn - I am always confused by why the two people who say that Jesus is the Christ (Mary, and Peter) get different responses. (24:13) Chris - What's the difference between a concubine and an adulterer? (31:35) Peter - How can there be a loving God whose ultimate plan includes damnation? (37:03) Marie - I had a friend who came into the Church last Easter. She has since decided to go to a Baptist church because it has a better community. What should I do? (44:44)
He's jammed with Freddie Mercury after Live Aid, written songs with Beach Boys royalty, and once found himself shooting guns in a backyard with KISS guitarist Ace Frehley…while on Quaaludes. I'm talking about musician, songwriter, and producer Larry Dvoskin. Over the years, Larry has collaborated with legends like Robert Plant, Sammy Hagar, Sean Lennon, Robin Zander, Bad Company, Al Jardine, and MGMT. In this episode, we cover it all—from co-writing “Wish” with Al Jardine, to talking quantum physics with Paul McCartney, to the unreleased David Bowie–Brandy track he's holding onto. He shares the full story behind that surreal Ace Frehley moment and discusses his latest release, “This New Age,” recorded with the band Familiar Faces. We kick off this conversation with a heartfelt look at the legacy of Brian Wilson - and the timeless music of the Beach Boys that continues to inspire generations. Ever wonder if your fitness coach is actually a sophisticated AI program pretending to be human? In this eye-opening conversation, we pull back the curtain on the growing problem of influencers using artificial intelligence to sell "personalized" fitness plans to hundreds or even thousands of clients simultaneously.Mike from "Mike Needs a Plan" joins us to share disturbing industry insights, including how a prominent fitness celebrity (described as "the Paul McCartney of our industry") was caught sending generic, recycled workout plans to clients who had specifically requested customized programs. We discuss the ethics of AI coaching, the reasonable client load for dedicated coaches, and how to spot red flags that suggest you might be paying premium prices for automated guidance. The conversation takes fascinating detours into the absurdity of current health priorities - politicians removing red food dye while loosening regulations on forever chemicals in our water supply. We explore how disability systems create impossible "brick walls" where people lose benefits faster than they can earn income, and share practical advice about what food banks actually need (hint: it's not just canned goods). For anyone trying to get back into fitness after a break, Mike offers refreshing perspectives on taking a more measured approach rather than diving into six-day-a-week routines. His moderate method has yielded better results without making the gym his entire personality.Whether you're navigating the confusing world of fitness advice, concerned about environmental policies, or simply trying to build healthier habits, this episode delivers straight talk with just enough humor to make the hard truths digestible. Join us for a conversation that might just save you from being scammed by a robot masquerading as your next fitness guru.
What do Paul McCartney, up-and-coming singer songwriter Ken Pomeroy, and a guy I passed on the street tugging along a French bulldog have in common? They all support my theory that pets inevitably resemble their owners–sometimes in looks, sometimes in spirit, but always in energy. When Ken Pomeroy introduced her song “Wrango” opening for I'm with Her and Iron & Wine at Asheville Yards on July 12, 2025, she described how the song was inspired by the liability her new dog had become from its quick temper. After WNCW's Joe Kendrick and I spent some time with her, we slowly got to see where the pup's feistiness came from. We talked about what it means to carry songs from childhood into adulthood, the tension between writing for yourself and performing for others, and the unexpected ways public commentary can rattle even the most grounded artists. As Ken says, “I never thought I'd care about online comments. But wow. I didn't know how sensitive I'd be.”And then there's “Flannel Cowboy”, Ken Pomeroy's closing track at her show, that isn't a love song, despite what you might assume. It's a quietly devastating reflection on friendship, ego, and the confusing wreckage of emotional fallout. It's a song about looking in the mirror and realizing that, sometimes, the thing biting at you isn't your dog, or your critics—it's you.Her vulnerability isn't just evident in the lyrics of her 2025 album, Cruel Joke, but in the way she speaks about songwriting as a spiritual act—one that gives form to feelings too big to hold alone. As a writer, I can relate to the need to shed some weight onto the page. Sometimes things get a little too loud and the only way to bring back the quiet is to release. Ken also told us about her connection to Cherokee heritage, her experience contributing to the language revitalization album ᎠᏅᏛᏁᎵᏍᎩ (Anvdvnelisgi), and what it meant to contribute to a project to empower young people to connect with their heritage. Whether she's reflecting on faith, feeling everything too deeply, or setting boundaries on what parts of her soul she's willing to hand over to strangers, Ken Pomeroy is an artist in full bloom. She's a songwriter first, a performer reluctantly, and a truth-teller always. — Elena Dickson Ken Pomeroy (photo: Kali Spitzer) Songs heard in this episode:John Denver “Leaving On A Jet Plane”“Wrango” by Ken Pomeroy, from Cruel Joke, excerpt“Grey Skies” by Ken Pomeroy, from Cruel Joke, excerpt“Flannel Cowboy” by Ken Pomeroy, from Cruel Joke, excerpt“Galvladi” by Ken Pomeroy, from Anvdvnelisgi Thank you for being here! In Episode 22 of Anything But Toto, Bianca and Julian present a working theory: what if the end of Brat Summer and the rise of 2025's “Sad Boy” music moment aren't just musical trends — but symptoms of a bigger political and cultural shift? They trace a narrative from the euphoric highs of 2024 — Charli, Sabrina, Chappell, Taylor, Beyonce, Billie, and Ariana — to a 2025 dominated by uncertainty, grief, and male uncertainty. As the Biden/Kamala era of feminist pop gives way to a new presidency built on macho bravado and male rage, pop culture enters a holding pattern: no song of the summer, no girlie anthems, just a flood of emotionally confused men with microphones. From the softness of Justin Bieber's Swag to Joe Jonas' post-divorce reflections, from Oasis' brotherly reunion to Djo's brotherly ballads — this episode digs into how masculinity is being redefined in the era of Trump. Is the music industry unintentionally staging a group therapy session for conflicted men? Also covered in this episode: - Paul McCartney's “Got Back” tour comes to Canada. - Kesha's Toronto show - Bianca's second interview with Beach Boys tour member, Matt Jardine - Ari Aster's Eddington - Bianca and Julian's rewatch/first viewing of Desperate Housewives A season with no anthem and a whole lot of feelings — “Sad Boy Summer” is here, and it's saying more than we think. It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. Ozzy is survived by his wife Sharon, his daughter Kelly and his son Jack. There is information about the drowning death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Sources said Warner died on Sunday at Costa Rica's Playa Grande Beach while on a family vacation. The beach has been called "challenging," and there were signs in English and Spanish warning about the risk of drowning. There were no lifeguards present due to a lack of resources. The Caribbean Guard stated, "Although there were people on the beach who entered the water to rescue him, they did not arrive in time. He was pulled from underwater without vital signs, and despite CPR maneuvers being performed on the beach, resuscitation was unsuccessful."Warner was 54. Paul McCartney Nearly Appeared On 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon is considered one of the greatest albums in rock history - and it almost featured a guest appearance from a Beatle. Paul McCartney, who at the time was fronting Wings following the Beatles' breakup, actually recorded some vocals for the record - but Roger Waters ultimately decided to cut it. Waters later said McCartney's performance didn't fit with the rest of the record: "He was trying to be funny, which wasn't what we wanted at all." Pink Floyd's David Gilmour would later play on McCartney's solo album Give My Regards To Broad Street. Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham Appear On Cryptic Billboard Yet another cryptic clue has appeared teasing a possible reunion of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. I'm welcoming Richard Mills back to the pod today, this time to talk about his book 'The Beatles ad Black Music'. Beginning with the grand narrative of British colonial history pre-Beatles, Richard's book covers the influence of Black music and culture on the Beatles' teenage years in the 1950s, their association with Lord Woodbine, their love of American Rhythm and Blues in the mid-1960s, and extends to a discussion of post-colonial British identity and the lasting effect Black music has had on the Beatles' legacy and continues to have on the solo careers of Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.
There's something uniquely captivating about listening to two master musicians simply talk shop. When Nashville session legend Tom Bukovac (affectionately known as "Uncle Larry") sits down with Greg Koch for this episode of Chewing the Gristle, their conversation unfolds like a masterclass.Bukovac pulls back the curtain on the Nashville session scene with refreshing candor. "It doesn't matter if you're playing for a barely signed new artist or Paul McCartney," he explains. "A sideman gig is a sideman gig. The only thing that changes is the dough and the prestige." This hard-earned wisdom comes from decades navigating an industry that demands technical perfection, psychological resilience, and emotional intelligence. The episode weaves through fascinating territory – from Bukovac's journey giving himself just one year to make it in Nashville (spoiler: he was on a tour bus within months), to the psychological challenges of session work. "I've been on sessions when people hated everything I played," he admits. "I remember coming home from sessions crying because I felt like such a failure." Yet this vulnerability transformed into strength, creating an iron-clad professional who now plays alongside artists like Vince Gill.Guitar enthusiasts will appreciate their deep dive into vintage instruments, including Bukovac's prized 1957 Gibson Les Paul Junior. Their shared language of influences – from Hendrix to Albert King to Jerry Reed – reveals how deeply personal guitar playing remains despite its technical dimensions.Perhaps most illuminating is Bukovac's perspective on what truly matters in music: "These are people's dreams you're working on. This is not just a session." That blend of technical mastery and emotional intelligence perfectly captures why some musicians remain eternally in demand.Whether you're a working musician or simply love peeking behind the curtain of the music industry, this conversation delivers honest insights you won't find in guitar magazines or music documentaries. Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason chats about his early days in Traffic, writing the classic "Feelin' Alright?", working with Delaney & Bonnie, and so much more. PART ONEScott and Paul chat about Dave Mason's unique role in the rock & roll pantheon.PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Dave Mason.ABOUT DAVE MASONAfter recording background vocals with The Spencer Davis Group on such hits as "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," Dave Mason became a founding member of the British rock group Traffic alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. He wrote some of the band's best-known songs, including “Hole in My Shoe” and “Feelin' Alright?” which went on to be covered in a memorable version by Joe Cocker. After touring and recording with Delaney & Bonnie (who recorded Dave's song “Only You Know and I Know”), he joined an early version of Eric Clapton's Derek & The Dominos. Dave soon left to pursue a solo career, beginning with the Alone Together album. He has released three Gold-certified solo albums and one Platinum album, Let It Flow, which featured the hit “We Just Disagree.” In addition to his solo releases and a duet album with Mama Cass Elliot, Dave has appeared on such legendary recordings as “Street Fighting Man” by the Rolling Stones, “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix, “Listen to What the Man Said” by Paul McCartney and Wings, as well as George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album. In the 1990s Dave spent time as a member of Fleetwood Mac, contributing original songs to the band's Time album in 1995. He has recorded with Michael Jackson, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Donovan, Phoebe Snow, and many others. Dave was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic and, in 2024, published his memoir, Only You Know and I Know.
