I'm currently taking a break from the podcast, however I think you might enjoy this slightly older episode on That Thing You Do!1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4....Everyone's favourite movie uncle Tom Hanks isn't as known for his directorial or screenwriting career, as he is for his many Oscar-winning acting roles. That Thing You Do! was his first foray into both directing and writing, and boy does he knock it out of the park with this. It's a charming, sweet, nostalgic tale of Erie, PA teenagers Guy, Jimmy, Lenny and Tobias (the retrospectively named bass player!). They are the Oneders, and they enter a talent competition with a ballad written by Jimmy and Lenny, but that replacement drummer Guy ups the tempo on, causing everyone to want to dance along. The Oneders, renamed The Wonders, along with Jimmy's girlfriend Faye, go on a whirlwind of musical success, but the music industry is not a forgiving master, and like many real life bands, the Wonders become one-hit wonders. It could easily be a cautionary tale, but it's just so joyous and charming, invoking an era of timelessness, recalling the bygone days of Americana, the British Invasion that started with The Beatles, as well as the politics of the music industry, with an earworm of a theme song that might even be better than the theme song of this podcast. This was a passion project for Tom Hanks, and you can tell. It oozes careful thought, and the level of behind the scenes talent working on this movie belies Hanks' inexperience behind the screen.Everything about this movie is, excuse the pun, wonderful. Liv Tyler has beautiful hair, and RIP Adam Schlesinger. This episode was originally released on 25th November 2021Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. After National Guard troops and the U.S. Marines were called in by President Trump over the protests in Los Angeles, the president is being criticized for his differing response to the Jan. 6 attack. During the U.S. Capitol assault, Mr. Trump waited to send troops to respond to his supporters. CBS News' Scott MacFarlane reports. A survey shows about one-in-four parents have authorized a child under 18 on their credit or debit card in an effort to give their young kids a head start on establishing their credit ratings. CBS News national consumer correspondent Ash-har Quraishi shows what parents need to know. The popular K-pop band BTS could soon be returning to the spotlight after going on a hiatus nearly three years ago to perform mandatory service in South Korea's military. Another four members recently completed their enlistments and now there's talk of new music. Nearly 40% of female travelers, surveyed by future partners, said they find solo travel appealing or very appealing, which is up 8% from the year before. Pilar Guzmán, Oprah Daily's editorial director, and Elise Loehnen, who wrote about going skiing solo, join "CBS Mornings" to discuss the trend.A high school teacher in Pennsylvania is finding that students are benefiting from turning off their digital devices and focusing on the analog world of manual typewriters. CBS News correspondent Lee Cowan shows how they become typing pen-pals with actor Tom Hanks as a result. Nearly three-quarters of kids get their first phone by 12 years old and spend, on average, more than five hours per day on their devices. Clinical psychologist Dr. Sheryl Ziegler joins "CBS Mornings" to discuss how parents can create healthy habits with their kids. Patricia Clarkson, a three-time Emmy winner and Oscar nominee, stars as equal pay activist Lilly Ledbetter in the new movie, "Lilly." Ledbetter sued her employer in 1999 for sex discrimination after learning she was being paid substantially less than her male colleagues. She lost her case at the Supreme Court, but 10 years later, then-President Obama signed the "Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act." Movie of the Year: 1999The Green MileWhy The Green Mile Still Strikes a ChordOn this episode of the Movie of the Year podcast, the Taste Buds step into the hauntingly spiritual world of The Green Mile, Frank Darabont's sweeping 1999 adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Blending magical realism with deeply human storytelling, The Green Mile tackles justice, pain, and the inexplicable mysteries of life—and the panel is here to unpack it all.As they revisit this emotional powerhouse, the Taste Buds examine the film's artistry, cultural context, and why it continues to resonate with audiences decades later. Whether listeners are longtime fans or curious newcomers, this discussion sheds light on the film's enduring significance.Darabont and King: Adapting The Green MileFew director-author pairings have produced such emotionally resonant work as Frank Darabont and Stephen King. After the success of The Shawshank Redemption, Darabont returned to King's work with The Green Mile, crafting another prison-set epic—but this time with a supernatural twist. The Taste Buds explore how Darabont translates King's sprawling narrative into a cohesive film, balancing intimate performances with grand themes of morality, fate, and grace. The episode also compares both adaptations, highlighting what makes The Green Mile uniquely powerful.Related Links:Stephen King's Official SiteIMDb: The Green MileCoffey and Race: A Complicated Legacy in The Green MileJohn Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) is one of the most memorable characters in 1990s cinema, but also one of its most debated. This episode takes a close look at the racial dynamics of the film, unpacking the “magical Negro” trope and its implications. The panel wrestles with the emotional potency of Coffey's story, the film's approach to race and injustice, and how it reflects the myth-making tendencies of Hollywood storytelling, especially when viewed through a modern lens. The Power of Love in The Green MileAt its core, The Green Mile is a film about love. Not romantic love, but love expressed through compassion, understanding, and humanity. The Taste Buds reflect on the different relationships in the film—Paul Edgecomb's (Tom Hanks) empathy for Coffey, the bonds between the prison guards, and even Coffey's tenderness toward the mouse, Mr. Jingles. The discussion highlights how the film uses moments of grace to balance its darker themes and why The Green Mile remains a tearjerker that earns every emotional beat.Bonus Segment: Being John MalkovichAs a special treat for listeners, the episode includes a bonus segment where the Taste Buds dive into another 1999 classic: Being John Malkovich. They explore the film's surreal originality, its commentary on identity and celebrity, and how it stands as one of the boldest cinematic experiments of the year. It's a wild ride that perfectly complements the emotional gravity of The Green Mile.Guest Panelist Spotlight: Erik from Cradle 2 the GraveJoining the Taste Buds for this episode is special guest Erik, host of the Cradle 2 the Grave podcast. With his signature insight and deep love for ‘90s cinema, Erik brings fresh perspectives to the discussion, particularly on the cultural legacy of The Green Mile. His dynamic presence adds a new flavor to the panel as they dig deep into themes of justice, faith, and film craft.

We've got a grab bag of summer movies and a guest star filling in this week on Breakfast All Day. We begin with "The Phoenician Scheme," the latest overstuffed, star-studded extravaganza from Wes Anderson. The ensemble cast this time features some old and new Anderson players: Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Riz Ahmed, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mia Threapleton, who steals the show. In limited release this weekend, opening nationwide next weekend. Next, Alonso's husband, Dave White, helps out on a review of the A24 horror movie "Bring Her Back." The Philippou brothers follow up their 2022 hit "Talk to Me" with another deeply disturbing film about loss, grief, and a desire to connect supernaturally with the other side. Sally Hawkins stars as the world's worst foster mom. In theaters now. And we wanted to share the audio from our live spoiler chat about "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning." We has a great turnout earlier this week to dig into all the ways the eighth Ethan Hunt adventure ties into previous installments, as well as who lives and who dies. We love doing these spoiler talks and we'll be sure to plan more as the summer progresses. Thanks for being here! * Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
