Romans 7:4 — Why is the doctrine of union with Christ so important? Many people consider theology to be useless and irrelevant for their everyday life. They want what is practical. In this sermon on Romans 7:4 titled “Union­ ­– Its Privileges and Purpose,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones expounds on the great theological doctrine of union with Christ and its everyday importance. He says the Christian has hope anew each and every day because they have died to themselves and now live in Christ. The doctrine of union with Christ teaches that they are no longer slaves to themselves, but are now slaves to Christ. They are inheritors of all the promises because they are one in Christ Jesus. This is the pure and unmatched hope of the gospel: God in Jesus Christ for His people. What of those that do not know Jesus? It is only in Christ that anyone can have true hope and all those that reject His gospel reject the only way of salvation. This is why the church must preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The church is not only the bride of Christ, but also the ambassador of Christ in the world. This sermon asks all if they have this hope. Are they now one with Christ?

Pete walked us through the fascinating tension between Deuteronomy 17's positive view of kingship versus First Samuel 8's harsh warnings - showing how the Bible itself contains multiple voices wrestling with power and justice rather than giving us simple answers. We explored why some Christians see social justice as heresy (spoiler: it's rooted in centuries of individualistic gospel interpretation), how the biblical texts often reflect hindsight commentary on failed systems rather than predictive prophecy, and why our modern drive for binary, black-and-white answers actually misses the beautiful complexity that makes scripture so relevant to our messy human experience. Tim and I got into the weeds on deconstruction, the liberating terror of discovering the Bible isn't a rulebook dropped from heaven, and how we might learn to negotiate with ancient texts the way Jesus did - amplifying calls to justice while cutting out the boundary-drawing exclusivity. Jonah, the reluctant prophet, was called to prophesy against the pagan capital of the world, Nineveh. He attempted to shun the assignment until God explained it to him a little more clearly! His message to Nineveh:40 days and you get yours! The greatest miracle in the book of Jonah was Nineveh's repentance, within the allotted 40 days, on speculation! They reasoned that maybe, if they repented, God might change His mind. They did. And He did. A century later, Nahum was sent to ask them to repent and Nineveh failed. Judgment resulted. Obadiah prophesied against Israel's enemies. His book provides insights into the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ and why some countries will apparently escape the rule of the Antichrist.
