If you've ever been even a little curious about the magic of trees, you won't want to miss this conversation with the ultimate tree expert, Tony Kirkham. We're diving into Tree: Exploring the Arboreal World—a seriously stunning collection of art, history, and culture, centred around the human-tree connection.  This book documents the historical significance of trees throughout human history, society and culture. This really is the coffee table book to end all coffee table books for anyone with even so much as a passing interest in trees. About Tree: Exploring the Arboreal World This exquisite survey presents a breathtaking sequence of full-page images – from landscape paintings and botanical drawings to ancient frescos, vintage book illustrations and contemporary photographs – revealing the tree as a source of inspiration throughout history. Spanning continents and cultures, Tree reflects the diversity of its subject, depicting giant sequoias, cherry blossoms, palms, poplars, ginkgoes and other species found across Earth's forest biomes, in a wide-ranging selection of visuals dating from Ancient Greece to the present day. More than 300 images include Roman stone mosaics, illustrated Norse myths, Edo-period woodblock prints and living tree installations, each lavishly reproduced. Curated by an international panel of botanists, naturalists, art historians and other experts, the images expand the definition of botanical art, together forming a vibrant, vital homage to the natural world. About Tony Kirkham Tony Kirkham is a renowned British arboriculturist and tree expert, best known for his lifelong dedication to the care, study, and preservation of trees. He served as the Head of Arboretum, Gardens, and Horticultural Services at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he played a pivotal role in maintaining one of the world's most diverse tree collections. Over his distinguished career, Kirkham became an authoritative figure in tree health, conservation, and education, helping to shape public understanding of trees' importance to ecosystems and human culture. He has participated in several international expeditions, collecting seeds and studying trees in countries such as China, Japan, and Chile, to enhance Kew's collections and support global conservation efforts. In addition to his practical work, Tony Kirkham is a popular figure in the media and has authored several books, including Remarkable Trees and Essential Pruning Techniques. He has also been featured in television series like BBC's The Trees That Made Britain, where he shared his extensive knowledge of how trees are woven into the fabric of human history and culture. His work continues to inspire tree enthusiasts and professionals alike, highlighting the deep connection between trees and humanity. WELCOME BACK TO THE MAKE IT PLAIN PODCAST - Thanks for coming back! If you slept on S1 you can return to our earlier episodes (S1 was funded by the Evens Foundation in Europe, themed on Black Studies, featuring Patricia Hill Collins, Kimberlee Crenshaw, David Harewood + more).  This is S2, and we're taking a slightly different tact than S1. We'll still be interviewing official guests in academia, politics, and elsewhere. What's new is that we'll also be talking to interesting people on the ground from organizations on the Black United Front (BUF, a directory of Black orgs across the globe that Make it Plain has begun developing). - In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews makes plain the House Negro nonsense of the coconut trial of Mariah Hassan, a person who was charged with carrying a placard that pictured Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman as coconuts. This isn't up for debate, this is not a criminal offense it's a defense of the Black radical intellectual tradition. Kehinde also makes plain the general election, the ways you can and can't represent as a Black MP, and the myth and propaganda of the Black Vote. Not discounting our influence in marginal seats, the myth of the Black vote is a really bad way of understanding Black political power. Kehinde makes plain a better (local, national, and global) way of understanding politics through a Black mass membership international organization. - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with George the Poet (featuring his son in the background hehe) about his new book Track Record. George shares a section of the book that never made it to his book, "The Anti-Afrikan." They also discuss, turning down an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) honor, despite it "opening doors" and networking opportunities (but the question is, "which doors?" and"whose doors?").   - George the Poet AKA George Mpanga is a multi-dimensional man with lived experience and a London-born spoken word performer of Ugandan heritage. His innovative brand of musical poetry has won him critical acclaim both as a recording artist and a social commentator. George is also a husband, father, and Cambridge graduate. - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS It's not a crime to call a "Coconut" a "Coconut." Professor Kehinde Andrews explains why the terms Coconut, House Negro, Coon, and Uncle Tom are vital expressions of Black political thought that should be celebrated and not policed. Drawing on work in his book 'The Psychosis of Whiteness' this is a handy guide through the use of the words complete with many examples. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZkD-e-b6Iw - GUEST LINKS George the Poet https://www.georgethepoet.com/ George's book: Track Record Delving into the music scene and iconic films from his childhood, as well as crucial political and economic moments in history, this book provides the backstory of where we are today. Purposely Podcast

Lisa Gagliani MBE, the CEO of Independent Arts, has embarked on a remarkable career journey driven by a sense of purpose. Her professional path has evolved from an initial interest in the food industry to roles within the enterprise landscape, where she supported businesses, and eventually, she transitioned into leadership roles within non-profit organisations. Throughout her career, Lisa has worn various hats, from leading prominent national charities to her current role as the leader of a small arts charity on the Isle of Wight. Renowned as a 'straight shooter,' she is deeply passionate about her work and takes pride in her versatile, hands-on approach to charity leadership. Lisa's journey started with a dual-subject degree in home economics and philosophy of education, igniting her fervour for nutrition and education. She initially delved into the food industry, working for a health food company that placed a strong emphasis on nutritious products. Her zeal for promoting healthy eating and improving dietary choices played a pivotal role in shaping her professional journey. During a period of her career, Lisa's role involved supporting Tupperware distributors, offering her invaluable insights into empowering small local businesses and the dynamics of franchising. However, as her family's priorities shifted, she revaluated her career. No longer willing to spend extended periods away from home, she dedicated a fulfilling decade to working at the Kingston Chamber of Commerce. Throughout this period, Lisa's entrepreneurial spirit and ardent commitment to supporting businesses and enterprise became unmistakably evident. A pivotal moment in her career unfolded when she joined Bright Ideas Trust, an organisation with a core focus on nurturing young entrepreneurs. Her impactful contributions significantly empowered disadvantaged youth, enabling them to venture into entrepreneurship and establish their businesses. Lisa's commitment to the charity sector earned her an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire). The recognition highlighted her contributions, particularly her role in leading a charity that empowered disadvantaged young individuals to launch their enterprises. Although the charity, Bright Ideas Trust, is no longer in operation, its legacy remains indelible. Reflecting on the unforgettable MBE award ceremony, Lisa recalls, "Receiving the MBE was a truly unexpected honour. In a brief one-on-one exchange, Her Majesty (the Queen) likened my work to what Prince Charles does, referencing the Prince's Trust and its support for small businesses. It was a delightful moment." Subsequently, Lisa took on the role of CEO at the Childhood Trust, dedicating just over two years to London's child poverty charity. Her role was dedicated to alleviating the impact of poverty on children and young people in the capital. Today, as the CEO of Independent Arts, Lisa continues her mission to empower vulnerable individuals and foster connections through the arts on a very local level on the Isle of Wight where she lives. Her primary focus, along with her team, revolves around enhancing well-being, reducing social isolation, and improving the overall quality of life. Beyond her professional achievements, Lisa enjoys a fulfilling personal life, marked by marriage to a professional landscape painter and the pride of being a mother to two grown sons and two cherished small dogs. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

A real tale of inspiration, determination and motivation as I sit down with the leader, the brand ambassador, the genius behind The Black Farmer brand – Mr Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE. His story begins as part of the Windrush generation, coming from poor farming stock in Jamaica with his parents, as part of Britain's shambolic attempt to rebuild the country after World War II. Left to fend for themselves in a strange country, thousands of miles from home, with little or no support from the host nation, Wilfred's parents settled in one of Birmingham's poorest districts, but there was a glimmer of hope in the form of a small allotment, which Wilfred tended to help supplement his family's food. He dreamed of becoming a farmer His education was from the school of hard knocks. He battled racism, otherism, prejudice in business, climbing the ladder at the BBC and going on to become a marketing and broadcasting expert. He achieved his original dream, going on to create The Black Farmer organic sausages, burgers, meatballs, bacon, chicken, free range eggs and cheese, which has now become a £10m creation. He was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire – a royal appointment), he's written a book on overcoming fear for failure and most of all, he beat cancer. He's now working on his latest project - a series of farm shops in deprived communities, bringing healthy natural artisanal brands to food deserts. He's an awesome man who champions the underdog. And he's here giving his unvarnished truth in this thoroughly entertaining, frank and forthright interview for grown ups. Apologies for the echo in the first 30 seconds of the interview, it doesn't last and believe us when we tell you, we tried everything to solve it.   I first met this guest when he wrote an extraordinary review of my first book when it was released in the UK. Not everyone with a great story and an unusual life is a racer, but he did try! Much to the detriment of motorists and riders in London.. Ian Kerr had a 30 year career with the London Metropolitan Police riding motorcycles. He befriended many including many racers who were his heroes and the Queen of England awarded him the MBE - Member of the British Empire for his services to motorcycling. "Coaching is asking. It's even better when you don't know how to do that person's job because they work in a different industry to you. All you can do is ask and that is pure coaching. It's an 80-20 ratio of speaking to listening - 80 percent of the time your job is to listen and to ask but not know the answer. Often the client thinks you do know the answer but actually you really don't and that makes the coaching pure coaching. It resists becoming mentoring, or telling, or advising. It sits next to psychotherapy - I am very much informed by psychotherapy, particularly the psychoanalytic stance in psychotherapy. I'm informed by it and borrow from its best ethics of good practice."     Episode Description: Rachel describes the similarities and differences between coaching and psychotherapy on the one hand and mentoring on the other. She emphasizes the fundamental importance of listening - her 80-20 rule. We discuss examples from her book on her coaching a leader of aid workers in Somalia, a coach of diversely disabled athletes at the 2016 Paralympic Games, and a woman from Pakistan who had to deal with conflicting feelings and realities when faced with an influx of Afghan refugees. In all examples, we hear of Rachel's capacity for nuance, ambiguity, and dedication to each individual's life story. We close with her recounting her own personal journey.    Our Guest: Rachel Ellison is a former BBC news reporter. She was awarded an MBE – Member of the Order of the British Empire – by Queen Elizabeth II / or by the Queen for her work on human rights and women's self-empowerment in Afghanistan. Her team was awarded BBC Team of the Year, in recognition of her coaching style of leadership with her all Afghan, all-female collective of journalists.    At the BBC, Rachel volunteered to train as an executive leadership coach and then went on to set up her own consultancy. She has led and coached across more than 40 different cultures, tribes, nations, and organizational systems around the world, including post-conflict zones and emerging economies such as Myanmar/Burma, Iraq & Syria, Kenya, and the former Soviet Union. Rachel coaches from a psychoanalytic stance – believing this approach to be intense, creative and generating of deep insight for individuals and organizations.  Rachel has been a guest lecturer at Birkbeck University London, at Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK, and to speak at international conferences throughout Europe. This episode is a natural progression from the previous two because it starts on the theme of death and dying. It then moves on to cover the community growing phenomenon known as Incredible Edible Todmorden. This has garnered a great deal of attention from across the world and is sometimes described as propaganda gardening. The common thread that connects these two themes is kindness. You'll hear about all of this from Mary Clear, the chairperson of Incredible Edible Todmorden. She's a great speaker and a fun interviewee.Mary received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2011 for her work in the community. Whilst this was awarded under the British honours system, she's certainly not an establishment figure. Her Twitter profile (@thelonggoodby) gives a much better indication of who she is. This is what it says: “Dreamer - activist - Death Doula, a woman on the edge of adventure. I sleep like a baby. I am afraid and brave. I believe in change and kindness.”A few years ago, Mary along with Hannah Merriman and Sue Robinson established the award-winning week-long Pushing up Daisies festival of death and dying in Todmorden. This ran for a few years and you'll learn more about it from Mary including the reasons why it hasn't continued. Here's a link to video recording of highlights of the Pushing Up Daisies festival in 2017. It was made by the Lien Foundation, a Singaporean philanthropic organisation that seeks to inspire social change in Singapore.During this episode, Mary explains what a Death Doula is and talks with passion, compassion and wisdom about the work she's involved in to support the dying. This includes helping people to have open conversations about the many aspects of death and the processes of getting there.  Mary mentions that she trained as a death doula in Lewes in East Sussex, England. Membership of End of Life Doula UK can only be gained after a death doula has completed a training course or is a current trainee. On Incredible Edible, you'll hear about its aims, what it does and its guiding principles. One of the most important of those principles is kindness. ‘Vegetable tourism', little libraries, doing rather than talking about doing, paralysis by fear, how to bring about change around you, and in yourself, litter-picking, breaking rules and taboos about eating eggs all enter the conversation. Before the interview, I found the following quotes from Mary:“Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted".“If you don't want to do anything, just follow the rules.” (TedX talk 2012). This is elaborated on in this episode. There are some great one-liners that come up during the interview too. Here's some:"Every day above ground is a blessing."“Kindness is contagious. When money doesn't step in the door, another piece of magic happens.”“If you talk too much, you will be paralysed. Fear paralyses people.”Mary's activism is rooted in Todmorden, a Yorkshire market town that's very close to Lancashire physically as well as in its collective mind. It's nestled in the Calder Valley that runs through the South Pennine hills of England. Todmorden has a population of around 15,000, around 10,000 fewer than when it was a bustling cotton mill town during the industrial revolution. The interview with Mary was recorded in her own home because our plan for a covered but open-air setting was too windy on the day. See https://timeissliding.earth for more information. Thanks for listening. She provides passionate, caring, ambitious business leaders that spend their time ‘in' the business, the help, guidance, and hands-on approach to lead them to success whilst improving the broken areas of the business.  She sees what others don't; the fragmented teams, the disjointed management style, or the loosely termed ‘processes' that are costing you time and money.  Also using her contacts, experience, and know-how of identifying and taking advantage of the opportunities available that are often vague. TJ has demonstrated results with her credible portfolio of business solutions, understanding from experience the sense of feeling powerless but more importantly how to get rid of these thoughts. TJ establishes that bond, allowing you to enjoy your business again and it not feel a burden with the vicious circle scenario. TJ wants you to feel as hungry for success as you did in the beginning and as excited with what opportunities are available, making them possible.  TJ has experienced the emotional drain and lack of motivation for those most accountable and this is why she does what she does.  Sharing ways to beat negativity, proving it isn't healthy or necessary to feel this way, making those in the business the heroes. As a married mom of two, TJ divides her spare time between her family and tending to her collection of animals that all live at home with her.  Having owned horses and ponies since the age of 9 she is a keen equestrian and now enjoys retraining her two ex-racehorses to become happy hackers for her and her daughters to enjoy countryside rides. Robin himself is blind and he joins us today to speak about his experience with Amazon Alexa and the benefits of voice-first technology for those with disabilities.Robin is a sought-after speaker, and has won numerous awards for his work in inclusion and accessibility, including the MBE – Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He produces the daily podcast, Dot to Dot, where he reviews Alexa skills.Robin’s Key Points about Technology, Accessibility, and AlexaRobin is blind and his visual impairment was gradually progressive from birth. He lost his remaining vision in his late teens and has used technology to help him with his daily activities over the last 20-30 years. There is a huge amount of excitement and enthusiasm about voice assistants within the areas of inclusion and accessibility. Voice tech will help people with all types of disabilities, from cognitive, to visual, to hearing, to many others.Voice speakers are the ultimate evolution in the computer interface. Voice is the most natural version of communication.Robin received his first Echo Dot for his birthday approximately 1.5 years ago and he loves it! He uses numerous commands and skills to help him with his daily organization and activities.Alexa allows for more accessible environmental control in a mainstream, affordable device. The low cost of entry to using Amazon Alexa is one of the reasons that the adoption rate of these devices has been so high.Robin finds that the most useful skills and commands for visually impaired people include calendar functions, scheduling, timers, entertainment skills, and the ability to ask general queries in natural spoken language. We are beginning to see a world of increasing ambient computing – where one simply talks to the air around him/herself and there are computers all around that are able to respond in an appropriate and relevant manner. One of the greatest benefits of Amazon Alexa, compared to other digital assistants, is the fact that Alexa has been built from the ground up with an emphasis on voice-first technology. On the other hand for example, while Siri currently is activated by voice, it relies heavily on a screen to deliver content. While recognizing that some people have concerns around privacy and security, Robin is not particularly anxious about these issues around these devices. He feels that we are living in the age of the ‘wild-west’ of the internet, but that the digital assistants are no different than any other websites or devices currently available. Having said that, he does not necessarily recommend putting a device with a camera in the bedroom!Dot To DotRobin has a daily podcast, Dot to Dot, where he highlights one or more skills each day.
