The centerpiece of this episode is DHP Episode 253: Academia is a Racket, which CJ produced back in late-February 2023, only about 6 months after he walked away from academia, after spending 22 years of his life in it (6 as a student & 16 as a teacher.) In this episode, CJ mostly avoided the lowest-hanging & widely understood defects of academia in recent decades — ie, the rise to hegemony of once-fringe (even in academia) “Woke” ideology, & the exorbitant costs to the students of getting a college “education.” Instead, drawing from his 22 years inside academia, he mostly focuses on structural (in the true sense of the word) problems inherent in the nature of the institution & the perverse incentives created thereby, which minimize the amount of education (in the true sense of the word) that takes place. Join CJ as he discusses the following problems with modern conventional academia: No real market feedback mechanism to indicate whether a “good education” is being provided. Overspecialization. Rigid credentialism. Too many courses online (especially at the intro/gen-ed level.) Excessive disability accommodations. Private-sector profiteering (off a captive audience & cartelized, non-competitive system.) Administrative bloat. A focus on arbitrary metrics that can be juked/gamed. Degree inflation. The accreditation agencies functioning as a cartel enforcer to artificially restrict entry & reduce competition. Ideology baked into most (if not all) disciplines, in many cases for over a century. In this episode, we continue our series on St Thomas Aquinas' Five Ways by exploring his Third Way: the Argument from Contingency. Aquinas begins with a simple but profound observation: the things we encounter in the world don't have to exist. You exist, but you could have failed to exist. The same is true of trees, mountains, planets, stars, and everything else we encounter in the created world. Philosophers describe things like these as contingent beings.But if everything were contingent, i.e. if everything depended upon something else for its existence, then what ultimately explains why anything exists at all? La guerra de Ucrania ha entrado en una fase en la que ambos bandos atacan la retaguardia del contrario, pero el castigo no se reparte por igual. La retaguardia ucraniana es realmente la Unión Europea y el Reino Unido, que este año han aprobado un paquete de 90.000 millones de euros en ayuda y estudian otro paquete similar financiado con activos rusos congelados. Los centros logísticos del ejército ucraniano están realmente en Polonia, Alemania o Rumanía. Rusia, en cambio, paga la guerra con hidrocarburos que vende a descuento a China y la India, y sus aliados, Irán y Corea del Norte, están en la ruina. La asimetría se observa son un simple vistazo. Se han encontrado drones explosivos en un aeropuerto alemán, se han producido ciberataques contra los ferrocarriles polacos, un incendio en una empresa de defensa estonia, explosiones en polvorines italianos y búlgaros, y proliferan los saboteadores reclutados por Telegram. Los incidentes han pasado de unos 10 al mes en 2024 a unos 15 desde el mes de abril. La ambigüedad beneficia a Putin, porque atribuirle todo este desorden refuerza gratis su reputación. El objetivo es obviamente político. Trata de erosionar el apoyo occidental a Ucrania y agitar la política interna de Alemania, Francia, Finlandia, Estonia y Polonia, que tienen elecciones en los próximos meses. Pero la estrategia no termina de funcionar. Los europeos del este perciben cerca el peligro y redoblan su apoyo a Ucrania. En Polonia, Rumanía y los países bálticos la mayor parte de la población está a favor de seguir enviando dinero y armas a Ucrania. Algo similar sucede en Europa occidental. El reloj corre contra el Kremlin. El ejército ruso pierde unos 35.000 hombres al mes entre muertos y heridos, más de los que consigue reclutar pese a pagar primas de hasta 4 millones de rublos y sueldos para los soldados rasos 3 o 4 veces superiores al salario medio en Rusia. Sostener ese ritmo exigirá una movilización que equivaldría a admitir que no están ganando. Una movilización, además, hundiría la popularidad de Putin en el interior. Bloqueado el avance terrestre, al Kremlin le quedan dos tipos de escalada. La vertical, ya ensayada con ejercicios nucleares sorpresa, que sirva de aviso de que podría recurrir al uso del arsenal nuclear. Y la horizontal, que consistiría en ampliar la extensión del conflicto para congelarlo después en mejores condiciones. Todo aprovechándose de la actitud de Donald Trump que ha debilitado la disuasión hasta tal punto que la semana pasada su Gobierno tuvo que enviar en secreto a Moscú al director de la CIA para recordar a Putin que el artículo 5 sigue en pie. El centro de gravedad ya no está en el Donbás ni en ningún otro lugar del frente, sino en la resistencia de los países europeos y en su disposición a sostener a Ucrania durante el tiempo que sea necesario. We discuss how the requirement of local gauge invariance generates interaction terms in the Lagrangian, and introduce the U(1) x SU(2) x SU(3) group structure of the standard model. We also consider the problem of massive W and Z bosons, and how this was resolved by the introduction of the Higgs field and the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking. Donald Trump anunció el viernes el que, según él, es el mayor acuerdo petrolero de la historia. Con este acuerdo Estados Unidos se asegurará el control mayoritario de más de 65.000 millones de barriles de reservas probadas venezolanas sin coste para el contribuyente. Parece algo irresistible, pero la contabilidad falla desde el primer vistazo. EEUU no será propietario de esos barriles, sino accionista de una sociedad con derecho a desarrollar 17 campos repartidos entre la Faja del Orinoco y el lago de Maracaibo. Además, entre un barril bajo tierra y otro listo para embarcar median años de inversión, tecnología y seguridad jurídica, algo que no abunda en Venezuela. El socio elegido es North American Blue Energy Partners, una empresa registrada en Barbados y controlada por Alejandro Betancourt, un empresario enriquecido al calor de los contratos del chavismo e investigado por presunto blanqueo en España y en Suiza. La operación la remató la Oficina de Capital Estratégico del Pentágono mediante unos warrants que dan al departamento de Defensa derechos sobre la producción futura por una prima simbólica. De los porcentajes de producción que irán a EEUU circulan varias versiones lo que significa que los detalles del acuerdo aún se encuentran lejos de estar cerrados. El calendario explica las prisas. La guerra de Irán mantiene cerrado el estrecho de Ormuz y las elecciones de medio mandato son en un par de meses. El problema es que la realidad sobre el terreno en Venezuela es muy distinta. Desde la caída de Maduro en enero, ninguna gran petrolera estadounidense se ha metido en aquel país por los riesgos que entraña y porque hay que gastar demasiado dinero para revivir la infraestructura. El país tiene hoy sólo dos taladros de perforación activos frente a los 120 que había en 1998, y produce en torno a un millón de barriles diarios, un tercio de lo de entonces, más o menos lo que extrae Dakota del Norte. Custodia, eso sí, el 17% de las reservas mundiales pero solo aporta el 1% de la producción mundial. Las petroleras son reacias a invertir allí porque las expropiaciones del pasado aún se recuerdan. Todavía hoy ConocoPhillips reclama 12.000 millones de dólares y ExxonMobil otros 1.000. Ante la falta de interés de las grandes petroleras la Casa Blanca está tentando a las más pequeñas dirigidas por gente próxima al presidente, pero incapaces de afrontar los gastos que requerirían desarrollar los proyectos de extracción de crudo pesado en la faja del Orinoco. Hay, además, otro elemento no menor. La Constitución venezolana de 1999 prohíbe de forma explícita transferir unos yacimientos que pertenecen a la República. Delcy Rodríguez es una presidenta ilegítima, gobierna sin haber pasado por las urnas tras heredar el cargo de un presidente hoy preso que robó las elecciones de 2024. En Venezuela todavía quedan unos 380 presos políticos y los principales jerarcas del chavismo como Diosdado Cabello o Vladimir Padrino siguen en el Gobierno. Los negociadores estadounidenses admiten que la estructura societaria privada se eligió para atar a los futuros gobiernos venezolanos, pero eso implica que la democracia no regresará a Venezuela en mucho tiempo, entre otras cosas porque hoy por hoy al Gobierno de Estados Unidos le interesa que se mantenga una dictadura con la que ha terminado asociándose. The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣhad is one of the later and shortest of the principal Upaniṣads, consisting of just twelve remarkably dense verses. It belongs to the Atharvaveda and is traditionally attributed to no single author, emerging from the ancient contemplative tradition of India.Though brief, it became one of the most influential texts of Advaita Vedānta. Its central teaching explores the four dimensions of consciousness — waking, dreaming, deep sleep and Turīya, the “Fourth,” which transcends and underlies them all. Through the symbolism of OM, the Upaniṣad points toward that which is beyond all changing states of experience.Through remarkably concise and penetrating verses, the Upaniṣhad points beyond the mind, beyond experience and beyond every concept of who we believe ourselves to be. What remains when waking, dreaming and deep sleep are understood as passing appearances? What is that which knows them all?The answer cannot be grasped merely as an idea.
