Holly's Red Carpet Favorites Keltie Knight- BEYOND! o Look: Strapless tea-length white gown with beading on the bodice. o Designer: Paolo Sebastian o Why It Stood Out: A stunning, beaded masterpiece that made a bold statement. The gown's elegance was undeniable, with intricate beading that added depth and texture. Stacy Martin-Honorable Mention o Look: Beaded Louis Vuitton spaghetti strap triangle top dress. o Why It Stood Out: A sculptural, princess-seamed dress that was unique in its design. As we're sure this was much prettier in person, the intricate details and couture nature of this dress were truly so different from any other dress on the carpet. Snaps all around. Storm Reid- YYYAASSSS QUUUEENN o Look: Short red dress with a matching cape and belt. o Designer: Alexandre Vauthier Couture. o Why It Stood Out: A bold, striking choice for her first Oscars, showcasing a confident fashion-forward look; with a belt! Loving this on her. Ariana Grande-DYING. DEAD. DECEASED. o Look: Count them. Not 1 but 2 custom sculptural dresses. One red gown for the performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and one for the red carpet. -Designer: Schiaparelli SS25 Couture o Why It Stood Out: The structured peplum, sweetheart neckline, and crinoline were just mesmerizing on the red carpet gown. The performance gown was a mix of elegance and theatricality, complete with a 3D shoe illusion on the back. Whhaaatt? Fabulous times a gajilliion. Yasmin Finney-WOW: okay what am I looking at? o Look: Black mermaid dress with 3 foot sculptural feathers way above her head. o Designer: Harris Reed FW24 RTW o Why It Stood Out: A unique, avant-garde style that caught our attention for its boldness and creativity. It was so wacky that it took chic to another level. TOTAL badass proving fashion is about pushing boundaries. Charlotte Lawrence- Like I can't even. o Look: Pink beaded gown with low V-neck and bow at the waist. o Designer: Valentino SS25 RTW. o Why It Stood Out: An ethereal, fashion-forward look with delicate details, the gown made a powerful statement with its fresh, romantic vibe. JUST GORGEOUS. Demi Moore- ABSOLUTELY AGELESS. o Look: Silver beaded spaghetti strap dress with a low V-neck and train. o Designer: Custom Armani Privé. o Why It Stood Out: Demi brought the old Hollywood glamour with this masterpiece. The ruching on the hips totally cinched in her waist and accentuated her bust. Complete hourglass. Fashion "Don'ts" and "Like, really?" OYE. 1. Whoopi Goldberg- Just why. o Look: Shimmery plastic-looking off-the-shoulder shiny A-line dress. o Designer: Christian Siriano Fall 2025. o Girl, no: While a bold choice, the dress looked weird as it was too hip and youthful for her, leaving us wondering how this dress found its way to her. 2. Zoe Saldana- Nooooooooo.....(light sobbing in the background.) o Look: Burgundy tiered bubble dress with mesh bustline. -Designer: Custom Saint Laurent o Girl, no: A multi-tiered upside-down mushroom design that left her looking shapeless. The addition of sheer gloves only added to the awkwardness. Different? Yes. Flattering? No. 3. Sarah Paulson- I mean, help me understand, queen. o Look: Inflated red circus dress. -Designer: Marc Jacobs SS25 RTW o Girl, no: The exaggerated shoulder pads and over-the-top volume made it hard to appreciate the design's beauty. It looked like something out of Alice in Wonderland, on acid, inside of a dumpster fire, inside of a tornado. Like how could she go to the bathroom in this?!? 4. Goldie Hawn-Very, very sad. o Look: Gold strapless beaded dress with a cape. -Designer: Dolce & Gabbana o Girl, no: It felt dated and was a color that didn't go with her skin tone. Bad hair, the same color as the dress with plastic surgery gone wrong. Fashion besties-it's Friyyaayy! This week, Holly dives headfirst into the hottest Spring 2025 trends you need to know. Whether you're a trend enthusiast or just trying to stay relevant, this episode is packed with style tips, insider knowledge, and plenty of laughs. It's your RIGHT to look fabulous for the upcoming season! LISTEN NOW! And follow along on this week's Pinterest Board! What You'll Learn in This Episode: 1. Slim Sneakers & Sporty Chic: Sneakers continue their reign, but this year it's all about slim silhouettes. Think lightweight styles like Pumas, Adidas, and boxing-inspired high-tops. Pair them with flowy skirts or romantic dresses for a modern twist. Sporty chic also takes center stage with bold motorsport-inspired graphics, silk anoraks, and track jackets. Sporty Spics is BACK. Don't forget to keep an eye on collections from LVMH brands influenced by the Paris Olympics for high-fashion takes on this trend. Professional athletes are also in the fashion hot seat as brands are turning to them for strong brand influence. 2. Animal Prints & Stripes: (never gets old) Animal prints, including zebra, tiger, and snake patterns, are timeless yet reinvigorated for Spring 2025. Any of these prints as an accessory, such as a leopard-print shoe or scarf can instantly elevate your outfit and take it to the next level. Stripes are equally versatile, with bold options layered in contrasting widths and colors. Days of the boring horizontal striped t-shirt have new life again with this trend. Try layering different types of stripes for an unexpected play-on pattern. Designers like Proenza Schouler and Dior showcase this preppy-meets-edgy vibe beautifully. 3. Plaid and Preppy: Plaid remains a key player in the preppy fashion resurgence, but Holly's rule is clear: less is more. Opt for plaid as an accent rather than the focal point—think flowy skirts, tailored layers, or abstract plaid dresses as seen in Ralph Lauren's recent runway show. Pair plaid with skirts, jackets, loafers, or oxford shoes to nail the preppy look. Men's neckties on women are making a huge comeback as well. When in doubt, try a plaid bag or scarf to add some color to your look. Think of it as a neutral that can go with anything. 4. Fringe & Ruffles: Fringe isn't just for country looks anymore. From leather jackets to car-wash-inspired fringe dresses (like Holly's burgundy stunner from Toccin), this trend adds drama to any outfit. Ruffles are another standout, seen in Zimmerman and Cynthia Rowley collections. Be mindful of fit—ruffles can either highlight or overwhelm, depending on placement. For a twist, try an asymmetrical version- this usually compliments the body to draw your eye down to create a longer, leaner look. 5. The Jeans Conundrum: Baggy jeans, dad jeans, and slim-straight styles are all the rage, with brands like Proenza Schouler and Pistola Jeans leading the charge. Acid washes, barrel silhouettes, and wide-leg fits offer plenty of options for every aesthetic. Let us help you navigate the confusion and choose the perfect pair for your shape and style. 6. Bubble Silhouettes: This playful, voluminous shape makes a comeback in both sophisticated and casual designs. From Jonathan Simkhai's elegant bubble dresses to Reformation's more accessible bubble miniskirts, this trend is back from OVER 30 years ago and is super popular right now. 7. Accessories Galore: Welcome to the era of "excessive accessorization"! Glamour Magazine's term for this trend encapsulates stacked necklaces, statement earrings (check out brands like Lelet NY), and bold scarves. Bags also get a refresh—think oversized totes, sleek daytime bags, and timeless clutches. Hot Tip: Remember, accessories are the key to taking your outfit to the next level. Why You Need to Listen This Week! Fashion Besties, this week we're kicking off 2025 with an episode packed full of must-know tips and practical advice to elevate your online presence. Whether you're updating your professional headshot, revamping your LinkedIn profile, or perfecting your dating app pictures, this episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast is here to help you put your best face forward! Tune in for expert advice, actionable steps, and, of course, a little Holly-style humor to keep you inspired. LISTEN HERE! Your profile picture is your virtual first impression, and we're diving deep into how to make it count. If you've been putting off updating your photo or are unsure where to start, this episode is exactly what you need. 2025 will be the year you show everyone just how good it can get if they hang with you. Key Talking Points 1. The Importance of a Great Profile Picture Your profile photo sets the tone for how others perceive you online, whether it's for business, casual relationships, or dating. It's a non-negosh to have a current, high-quality image that reflects both your personality and professionalism for who you are today. Not 5 years ago or not next year when you lose weight. Today. Avoid outdated headshots that no longer represent you or unprofessional casual snapshots that won't do you any favors. We all have those floating around somewhere. 2. What Makes a Perfect Professional Headshot Invest in a skilled photographer who specializes in headshots. This is not the time for DIY attempts or relying on coworkers or family members to shoot your picture in the backyard. Wardrobe tips: Choose outfits that reflect your industry but also inject some personality—think bolder colors and structured clothing that will flatter your figure. No thin, clingy, or stretchy fabrics that can show problem areas or clothing that is too revealing. On the flip side, stay away from boring, predictable white shirts and blue blazers. Color = confidence. Hair and make-up: Think "camera ready". This means more hair styling and make-up that you would normally wear that will show up on film. Hair and make-up styling by a professional is key. The proof is in the final images. You won't regret taking this extra step. 3. Crafting a Memorable Dating Profile Picture Dating photos should exude warmth and personality without crossing into professional territory. Just say no to using your office headshot! #Dontdoit Recommendations: Start out with an updated picture of you from the waist or from your bust line up, in a well-lit environment. You can never go wrong with using pictures of you shot outside with natural light. Using additional pictures to showcase hobbies or interests, like outdoor activities or social events is always a good idea. 4. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them BUSINESS photos for PERSONAL profiles: Avoid using your office headshot on dating profiles. People want to know you outside of work. Keep the tone casual and approachable with personal pictures. Ignoring updates: If your photo is more than three years old, it's time for a refresh. #FACTS Lack of wardrobe preparation: Holly advises always having versatile, stylish options in your closet to avoid last-minute shopping panics. Listen to the full episode for wardrobe suggestions! Closing Thoughts Your profile picture is more than just a photo; it's a key part of your personal brand. A thoughtfully updated image can open doors, create connections, and help you stand out—whether you're looking for career growth or meaningful relationships. #TRUTH THE TIME IS NOW. It's time to book your photographer, prep your wardrobe, and show the world you look too good to be ignored. #YAASSSS HOT TIP: Go back and listen to Episode 180 for more headshot tips, and check out Holly's Pinterest Board for that episode. Fashion Besties it's Friyyyyaaayyyy and you will not regret spending the next 30 with us. Welcome to Episode 221 of the Fashion Crimes Podcast. This week, we're diving deep into one of the most versatile and timeless wardrobe staples: DENIM! What you need, what you don't need; what's hot and what's trending. Whether you're a jean queen or hesitant to hop on the denim train, this episode will convince you why having the right denim is a game-changer. #trustandbelive From light washes to dark rinses, ripped to raw, we've got the ultimate guide to elevate your jean game. So, stop what you are doing, and let's talk denim! It's all the rage right now, and not going anywhere anytime soon. HOT TIP: Follow along with Holly's curated denim Pinterest Board! Lots of examples to inspire you there. KEY TOPIC POINTS Jeans will never go out of style and haven't for the past 150 years. So, here's the thing: if you hate jeans, this just means that you haven't found a pair that fits your body correctly. This is important. To find the correct fitting jeans, you must identify your body type and where you need the most support. It's worth the effort to find that fit because they will be in your wardrobe forever. You won't be sorry. “Denim is something that can sustain you for several years and is one of the most durable clothing items you will ever own.” – Holly Katz, your favorite personal stylist **The Must-Have Trio** Every wardrobe deserves these three staples: light and, dark wash, black and a white pair for extra credit! These pieces will effortlessly carry you through casual Fridays, chic brunches, date nights, and so much more. Think of them as the foundation of your denim arsenal. Think of it this way- a great-fitting pair of jeans can make you look YOUNGER. (#facts) It's all about the fit. It's a foolproof plan. **Holly's 5 Factors to Consider When Buying Jeans** Before you swipe that credit card or buy the first pair you try on, let's keep these five factors in mind: 1. Rise: High, mid, or low? The rise determines where your jeans sit on your body and how they flatter your waistline. 2. Stretch: Look for elastane or spandex in the fabric blend for comfort and movement. Always do the sit-down test to ensure they aren't too low in the back or baggy in the front (too big) before committing to purchase. 3. Support: If you need extra shaping-you've come to the right place. Brands like Spanx NYDJ, or Good American can offer tummy control and butt support in a variety of styles. 4. Rinse: Dark washes can make you look slimmer (#truth) if that's what you're going for. Lighter washes are great for a laid-back vibe in the warmer months. Don't be afraid to try colored or wax-coated denim for a fun twist-you might be pleasantly surprised. 5. Price: Whether you're splurging or saving, fit is king. Vintage and secondhand stores can be goldmines for quality denim at a fraction of the cost. Make sure you TRY ON before purchasing and get familiar with return policies. A size 28 today might not be the same size 28 from a few years back. #justsayin **Brands That Love Every Body** For those seeking comfort, style, and the perfect fit, here are some Holly-approved brands: - Levi's: A timeless classic. Start with the iconic 501s and build from there. #greatprices - Mother: Known for buttery-soft fabrics and flattering cuts. #alwaysfab - Good American: Inclusive sizing and their famous gap-proof waistband. #signmeup - NYDJ: Perfect for a little extra support and tummy control. #greatsupport Remember: Fit first, style second. Try before you buy! #foreverandalways Listen to the episode for more brand suggestions! **Distressed Denim: Still in Style?** Yes, ripped and distressed jeans are here to stay and aren't going away anytime soon! Luxury brands are even upping the ante, charging top dollar for that artfully tattered look. But if you're not looking to splurge, distress them yourself for a unique, personal touch. **Is there a Denim Fashion Crime?** The only possible denim crime, in Holly's view, is “jeggings.” Either wear leggings and work out, or wear jeans like a grownup. Please feel free to tell anyone who might need to know this. Also? Ill-fitting jeans that are too tight on your waist and cause “overage” and low-rise jeans that let your backside hang out. Come on Ladies (and Gents), no one wants to see either. Again, please feel free to tell anyone who might need to know. #ucandoit **Care Tips for Longevity** Don't over-wash your denim. Every 3-4 wears is ideal and always air dry to maintain the fabric's integrity. HOT TIP: For a quick refresh, try the freezer method—yes, really! It helps kill bacteria without breaking down the fibers. Don't forget to follow along with Holly's curated denim Pinterest Board! Share with someone who just needs to know. Quick Personal Update Holly's health journey: She is on her way to a bone marrow transplant on deck this week to treat a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. Hair will be gone but wig will be on! (Feel free to put that on a pillow). Her wig is cocked, locked, and ready to rock. Holly is feeling strong and positive – and a huge thanks to all our besties who've sent so much love and support—you keep Holly going! --- **Final Word for Our Fashion Besties** Ladies over 40, remember this: fashion is a tool, not a rulebook. Invest in pieces that make you feel confident and are authentic to who you are today. And never forget, we are *the best fashion friend you never knew you needed*. Holly will be lying around getting better and recovering for the next few weeks, so hit her up on her social with your fashion questions! Let me check her schedule...Yep, all clear. Welcome back, fashion besties! In this episode of the *Fashion Crimes Podcast*, Holly Katz brings you the latest and greatest from the biggest trend-setting runways of New York Fashion Week. If you're looking to elevate your style game and stay ahead of the fashion curve, you don't want to miss her insider scoop on what's hot and what's not. Get a sneak peek at Holly's top trend picks on her Pinterest Board! Even though the shows were geared toward the Spring 2024 season, Holly's keen eye reveals how many of these trends are already making waves this fall and winter. Know this: these trends are ageless and can work for any body type. So grab your favorite top-handle bag, buckle up with those trending wide belts, and tune in as Holly spills the tea on everything from oversized scarves to nautical vibes, all while helping you avoid those dreaded fashion crimes! Key Topics: **Fringe, Oversized, and Deconstructed Styles** Fringe was everywhere this season, from carwash skirts to capes, and it's a trend that's not going anywhere anytime soon. Holly highlights how oversized everything—scarves, jackets, and lapels—is making a bold statement for both men and women this fall. She also discusses the rise of deconstructed clothing, like unfinished sweaters sewn onto shirts or jackets with extra lapels, double belts, and waistbands. These playful, edgy looks are perfect for those who love a more interesting, conversational style. **Early 2000s Nostalgia – The Return of Dress Over Pants** Love it or hate it, the dress-over-pants combo is back in full force, with sheer slacks and layered sheath dresses leading the way. Holly reminisces about rocking this look 25 years ago, (still love it), and she's here to help you embrace this trend for a modern twist. **Nautical & Western Themes** Holly reports a heavy nod to nautical styles on the runway, featuring everything from sailor knots and caps to navy-and-white stripes. Western influences also held strong with cowboy-inspired denim, patchwork, and distressed looks. If you're a fan of flowy peasant tops or chain belts with bold links, this is your season to shine! **Bold Colors and Rich Textures** This season is all about contrast and texture. Holly highlights bold black-and-white combos, deep jewel tones like jade green and navy, and neutral shades like cream and khaki. Crochet is making a statement, paired with sheer fabrics, while beading adds flair to coats and denim. Whether it's crochet or textured layers, the options for mixing colors and fabrics are endless! **Accessories Take Center Stage** The star of the accessory world this season is the top-handle bag. Medium-sized bags with structured handles were spotted everywhere, along with belts taking a lead role in fall outfits. Holly notes the revival of charms—both on jewelry and handbags—as well as bold hair accessories, making these must-haves for any fashionista looking to level up their look. **Fashion for Women Over 40: What Holly Saw at NYFW** For all the fabulous women over 40: a trend doesn't have to be conforming or "too young" for you to pull off. Many designers this season have created wearable looks that don't just belong on the runway but are perfect for real life. #YAASSSS. From crop tops to structured blazers, there's no age limit to pulling off these fresh styles. You can absolutely make it work for you. This season's shows offered plenty of ways to incorporate trends like oversized scarves, wide belts, and utility jackets into your wardrobe, all while keeping comfort and sophistication front and center. HOT TIP: Don't forget to follow along on Holly's Pinterest Board to see her picks from NYFW! And let's not forget Ralph Lauren's masterful show in the Hamptons—Holly was particularly impressed by the timeless, American-inspired looks that work across all demos and lifestyles. It was denim, denim and double denim paired with classic nostalgic 1990's colors, styles, and accessories. With what seemed like over 100 looks to choose from, Ralph Lauren had the most incredible, wearable styles that we loved so much. Fashion Crimes of the Week: Let's Learn from Them! Holly couldn't help but spot a few fashion crimes in the wild this week, but don't worry—she's here to guide, not judge! From rubber flip-flops posing as real shoes- #GIRLNO to outdated denim Capri pants and ill-fitting bras, #JUSTWHY these small missteps are totally fixable! #YAY Remember, it's never too late to elevate your style! Opt for polished sandals and chic cropped jeans that hit right at the ankle for a more flattering look. Holly's mission is to help you step out in confidence, so take note of these tips and turn those fashion faux pas into fashion wins! Landscaping a garden can be overwhelming. Where to start? What to consider? This week, Keith gives us some practical advice.Steps to follow:Start with a ‘wish list' - consider how you would ideally want to use the space. Do you want a BBQ, a pool, outdoor seating, a pond, vegetable garden etc. Look at the paved areas - do you want decking, paving, granitic sand etc. Start a Pinterest Board can be a great way to explore what you like and compile your ideas.Consider zones including those that you don't want to be seen (utility area, clothes line etc)Create your plan (or employ a landscape architect), drawing in your structures, paving, decking and plants. Using the council plan of your house and garden will help you work to scale to work out the quantities of what you need - eg for soil, plants etcBefore commencing, existing vegetation will need to be poisoned and remove any unwanted materials. Slasher is an excellent organic herbicideLay down the paving decking etcBring in the soil and additional materials for soil improvement. Soil improvement is the number one factor to growing a healthy, lush garden. Adding Compost, Clyde's lignite humate to improve the soil and using products like MycoGold will give your plants a great start. Mulch - Keith recommends granitic sand over the top of soil. Irrigation best to go in before the plants. Check out Dan Modular SprinklersPlanting - Autumn when they can get established before the winter.Consider a landscaper to do the initial work of the pathways, decking, soil and irrigation systems if this is too much work.Where you can find all things Muddy Boots!Website: https://www.muddyboots.net.au/Instagram: www.instagram.com/muddybootspodcast/ Facebook: Muddy Boots Podcast | Facebook
Happy Post Memorial Day, Fashion Besties! Whether you celebrated in style or stayed cozy in your pajamas, I hope you had a fabulous time. Special thanks and snaps to everyone in the Armed Forces for their incredible service. This week, we're jumping from the high dive into our Top Swimsuit Picks for 2024. Get ready to hit the beach in style with suits that flatter every figure. HOT TIP: You can find all of Holly's selections on your Pinterest board of the week! As your Fashion Over 40 (and now Over 50) Bathing Suit Expert - with a bathing suit PSA- This is a product that has more measurements and specifications that can go down to the 1/16th of an inch. The first thing you should look for when buying a bathing suit is the measurements in the areas where you need the most support. Key Talking Points: Finding the Perfect Fit: Measurements Matter: Swimsuits, like lingerie, require precise measurements. Look for suits that fit your body type perfectly, offering the support and coverage you need. Tall Girls, Listen Up: If you're over 5'10” with a long torso, choose styles designed to prevent uncomfortable riding up. Proper fit is key to avoiding fashion mishaps. Support for All Shapes: From minimal support to bra-like structures, pick swimsuits with the right amount of boob support. Wider straps can also provide better lift and comfort. Coverage Concerns: Ensure your suit isn't too see-through when wet and offers enough coverage in the front and back to keep you comfortable and confident. Style and Functionality: Multi-Functional Swimwear: Choose swimsuits that can double as bodysuits for a seamless transition from beach to dinner. This adds value by lowering the cost per wear (CPW). Age-Appropriate Choices: Find a balance between stylish and age- appropriate. Avoid suits that make you feel self-conscious or too matronly. Activity-Ready: For active days, opt for styles that stay put and provide enough coverage, especially if you're running around with kids or participating in water sports. Top Picks for 2024: Jantzen: Known for their rich history and diverse styles, Jantzen offers affordable swimsuits with UV protection. Check out their sister company, Cosita Linda, for more fashion-forward options. Karla Colletto: If you're ready to splurge, Karla Colletto's swimsuits, made in the USA, feature unique styles and prints perfect for making a statement. Miraclesuit: A long-time favorite, Miraclesuit designs provide excellent support and a flattering silhouette, making them worth the higher price tag. Norma Kamali: With styles like the Illusion swimsuit, Norma Kamali offers sexy and well-fitted options that are sure to turn heads. Swimsuits For All: Catering to sizes 4 to 44, this brand ensures every body is a beach body. Their reasonable prices and wide range of styles make them a go-to choice. What Not to Do: Avoid Big Box Stores: Don't waste time hunting for cheap, ill-fitting swimsuits at big box stores. Invest in quality pieces that make you feel fabulous and last longer. Avoid Instagram Traps: What you see being sold on IG is mostly fast fashion: A major fashion crime, and crappy all-around. Last Week's Episode Recap: Last week, we tackled the tricky topic of office dress codes in Episode 197. PS: A big shout out to everyone who wrote in with terrific comments! What is up, Fashion Besties! Holly Katz, your favorite personal stylist for women over 40—and we mean, way over 40—is back with another fabulous episode of the Fashion Crimes Podcast. This week, we're charging into the chaotic world of office dress codes as many of us have returned to "Back to Work in the Office." Based on an insightful article in the Wall Street Journal recently, we're breaking down the do's and don'ts of workplace attire in 2024. In this episode, Holly addresses the great debate about 'crop tops' in the office. Are they appropriate? Who can wear them, and how should they be styled to keep them professional yet fashionable? Holly shares her expert advice, drawing from personal experience and the latest fashion trends. Spoiler alert: Holly has been rocking crop tops since she was 12 and continues to do so fabulously at 50. I mean, the crop top has gotten longer, but still a crop nonetheless! MUST DO: Find Holly's specially curated Pinterest board just for you, for this episode. Key Highlights in This Episode The Article that Sparked It All: While researching the topic of dress codes, Holly came across a great article written by Jessica Roy of the Wall Street Journal titled: "Your Intern Is Wearing a Corporate Crop Top. Should You Say Something—or Join Her?" How's that for an eyeball-stopping headline? It certainly got our attention! Office Dress Code Apocalypse: What to do. What to wear? So, Holly started wondering: What is the current state of office dress codes post-pandemic and how are different industries adapting (or not) to the changes? Well, it depends on where you work: Tech Industry: Casual wear like jeans, rec sneakers, and t-shirts can be the norm, but adding a stylish blazer can elevate the look for meetings. And accessorize! Finance and Law: Stick to traditional dress codes with modern twists, like a sleek suit in a bold color or a dress with a fabulous printed shoe. Texture and pattern can go a long way for a stricter dress code. Creative Fields: More flexibility allows for expressive attire, such as distressed fabrics, body art, logo tees and non-traditional work attire. Bold colors and clothing with more 'personality' is usually widely accepted. Holly shares her views on why it's essential to redefine workplace attire standards to match the modern, flexible work environment. Pushing past your comfort zone and expressing yourself through fashion, even if just a little, can be appropriate in a business or work environment if done tastefully. Crop Tops in the Workplace – Yay or Nay? We know what we think, what do you think? Are women now wearing crop tops to the office? What are people saying about that? Well, if the comments at the end of the WSJ article are any indication, this subject seems to have caused a bit of a debate. Holly shares her take on how, yes, you actually can style a cropped top that will accentuate your waist - AND – look professional without having half of your stomach showing. In fact, if you are worried about your midsection, wearing a shorter top or jacket will actually help you look thinner. It's fashion law. That is a fashion fact, and you can quote Holly on that all day long. Here's how to pull it together: 1.) Pair a cropped blouse with high-waisted tailored trousers and a structured blazer for a chic, office-appropriate look. #yyaasssss 2.) Opt for a crop top that just grazes the waistband of a high-waisted pencil skirt, adding a fitted cardigan for extra coverage and sophistication. #sllllaayyyy 3.) For a more conservative approach, wear a slightly longer crop top that overlaps with high-waisted wide-leg pants, finished with a statement belt to define your waist. #ffieerrce Pinterest Alert! Don't miss out on Holly's specially curated Pinterest board for this episode. It's packed with style inspirations and wardrobe ideas to help you nail the crop top trend at work. Side Bar: Party Invitation Dress Codes Decoded With the swarm of spring and summer celebrations in full swing, are you getting party invitations with dress codes mentioned? Do you know what words like “Chic,” “Cocktail” and “Day Party” mean? Yeah, we don't either. Party hosts must BE SPECIFIC if they have a theme or dress code style in mind for their parties. Most humans (not our Fashion Besties) are unclear on what proper party attire is on a good day...and can commit a fashion crime if not explained and broken down. Party Hosts: Please tell guests in plain English what you want them to wear. And then add a 1-800 helpline if they need clarification, because it's brave of them to ask for help in order to ensure you have the perfect party. They want to get it right. Help them. In this part of the episode, Holly offers her insights on interpreting and adhering to dress codes on party invitations, with examples like "Aloha Chic" and "Fabulous." Here are some fashion clues for your guests: 1.) "Aloha Chic" Hawaiian shirts for men and tropical print sundresses for women. Add floral accessories or leis to complete the look. 2.) "Fabulous" Sequined dresses, statement jewelry, and sky-high heels for women; tailored suits with bold ties or pocket squares for men. Think glamorous, bougie, and over-the-top. 3.) "Cocktail Attire" Chic black dresses or elegant jumpsuits for women...(and evening jumpsuit!) paired with evening, beaded shoes and a coordinating bag. Men can opt for dark suits with crisp dress shirts and stylish shoes. Final Thoughts At the Fashion Crimes Podcast, we are here to help our Fashion Besties stop making common fashion mistakes. Hey there fashion besttiiieess! Welcome to Episode 173 of the Fashion Crimes Podcast where your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz, shares her fashion formula for surviving the holidays in style. In this episode, we're diving into holiday outfit inspiration. Get ready for some fabulous tips, newly-discovered brands you need to know - and the secret to enjoying this event-FULL season stress-free! #YAASS LISTEN HERE NOW! Whether you are chilling at home or hitting up a fancy event, we've got you covered. But before you get totally overwhelmed, please know that this episode is about being prepared for ANY holiday event - from dressy parties to hanging out at home with your family. The key is to not wait until the last minute to plan your outfits - and to pick easy, versatile, and comfortable styles that celebrate the season-whatever you celebrate. HOLLY'S HOLIDAY OUTFIT PICKS: Maxi Skirt Magic: How to Wear: Pair a maxi skirt with an oversized cozy sweater or a chic turtleneck, wide belt and a boot for a comfortable, yet stylish look. Perfect for at-home gatherings or casual outings. Holly shares her go-to outfit plan for comfort and style, which includes a pleated maxi skirt, a T-shirt, boots, and a denim jacket, blazer or cropped cardigan. Accessorizing Tips: Add a statement belt (studs or stones) or some fun jewelry to elevate the outfit. Don't forget a pair of stylish boots (high heel or cowboy style), or low heel sling backs – the hottest shoe this year! Wonderful Wide-Leg Pants: How to Wear: Holly recommends wide leg pants as a comfortable and versatile fashion trend that can be worn year round. Combine these with a fitted top or a sleek blazer for a balanced silhouette. Ideal for both casual and formal events. Accentuate your waist with a skinny belt (yes, a skinny belt) and tuck in your top if you can. For this look, a sneaker is a great option, loafer or a lug sole boot. Favorite New Brand: Holly loves brands that offer stylish yet comfortable options, perfect for those holiday dinners and parties. A fabulous new brand that came her way is ME +EM. Check them out! Just Jumpsuits: How to Wear: A jumpsuit can be a complete outfit on its own, and Holly recommends them for their ability to be dressed up or down. They are a flattering option for any body type! Choose one in a festive color or with an interesting pattern. Add a belt to accentuate your waist. Great for travel!!! Holly recommends jumpsuits for their versatility and practicality – and offers suggestions to elevating the look by pairing them with a jacket or fun heel. Layering for Warmth: In cooler weather, layer it with a leather moto, oversized chunky cardigan or a cropped blazer. Party Dresses: How to Wear: If you are invited to a corporate party or to someone's home for a dinner party or open house, just assume it's dressy. Find dresses you already own in our closet (even sleeveless or strapless in the winter) and dress them up by adding tops and shirts UNDERNEATH, or by adding layers on top. Accessorize: Taking time to add statement pieces like a bold pattern jacket, a knit wrap or pattern scarf, chunky jewelry, or colored bag can go a long way to formalizing any dress your already own. If you must go shopping, then this is the best time of the year to get a great deal. Holiday Readiness and Organization: Be Prepared for All Occasions: Holly advises having a go-to outfit ready for different types of holiday events, from casual family gatherings to more formal parties. Keep your closet organized and cohesive to avoid feeling like you have ‘nothing to wear.' Pajama Chic with Katie Kime: Stylish Pajama Option: Holly recently received a pair of fun and fancy PJs for her 50th and now recommends the Katie Kime brand for stylish pajamas that are comfortable, yet chic enough to wear in front of guests. Who says you can't wear fabulous pajamas around your fam These pajamas strike the perfect balance between loungewear and guest-appropriate attire, making them a great choice for holiday mornings or casual home gatherings. And with that – you are Holiday Event-Ready! Be sure to see examples of all of these recommendations on Holly's Pinterest Board. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays! New This Week! Join us for a new episode in our DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT series, featuring Holly's interview with Malia Eigelbach, the Brand Director of one our favorite new brand finds: Sea & Grass Woven Handbags. Sea & Grass creates stunning handwoven handbags and other accessories made of seagrass. Designed in California and ethically handwoven in Thailand. Their mission is to create high-quality, sustainable products that combine East and West design elements while giving back to the community. In this episode, Holly introduces us to Malia, who manages the brand and curates their philosophy of "Nature. Style. Purpose." LISTEN HERE NOW or wherever you get your podcasts. This video episode is also available on YouTube. Malia tells us about the origins of this woman-owned company and its commitment to sustainable fashion design and production - which is thoughtfully handmade by passionate artisan weavers in Thailand, the home of the founder. They pride themselves on the fact that their bags are handwoven by villagers who are paid a fair wage and have created a fund to help provide community support for these artisans. The fund provides educational subsidies for the children and families that weave their bags. BACKGROUND: This company was started over 7 years ago and is a family- and women-run organization. Pam, the founder, grew up in both Thailand and the U.S. and loves sharing her culture and love for gorgeous bags. Thailand is known for its kind people and excellent artisans. In Thailand, the centuries-old craft of basket weaving has been handed down from one generation to the next. Pam has created a sustainable brand that prevents agricultural pollution by creating products made with “seagrass,” also knows at the tropical “Water Hyacinth” plant. Thailand, nicknamed the “Land of Smiles,” is home to many skilled artisans crafting locally made and sustainable products. Basket weaving is an ancient art passed down from generation to generation. Seagrass, an underwater flowering plant, grows wild all along the shores. It provides a safe habitat for fish and prawns and is the primary food source for turtles. Dead seagrass washes up on the beach, and Thai weavers collect the offerings. Seagrass, while natural, can clog up roads and sewers, becoming a nuisance for people. But when it's dried and weaved into magical creations (from baskets to bags), it becomes unique to that village community, referred to as “one tambon one product” (OTOP). The process of creating bags takes several days from start to finish. Once the seagrass has been harvested and dried, every single product is hand-woven. This is not fast fashion, but instead, high-quality, sustainable, durable, functional, and beautiful art. The final product is more than just a “bag.” The founder, Pam, believes in offering signature handbags and accessories that “elevates lives and closets.” We LOVE this! Be sure to click over to Holly's Pinterest Board for this episode to see the styles discussed in this episode. The full interview is also available on YouTube. HOT PRODUCTS: Children's Bags Woven Handbags Accessories Home Décor Customization WHAT'S NEXT: New products are being expanded to include Home Décor, Weddings and even Wine! GIVING BACK: At Sea & Grass, they believe in the power of education and want to help disadvantaged children dream. With this mission in mind, they created the Areeya Scholarship Fund. A portion of the profits of every bag sold helps pay the costs of tuition, books, transportation, and other necessities for disadvantaged Thai children. The majority of the fund goes to the children of the same weavers who create Sea & Grass bags. In addition to paying a fair wage, they further their economic power by helping them afford school for their children, nieces, and nephews. They see the process as a beautiful cycle of entrepreneurship and generosity. You will love learning about this incredible brand, and we are so grateful to Malia for introducing us to this creative, stylish, and unique brand! Holly is hot off the runway at New York Fashion Week's Fall 2023 shows and filled to the brim with fresh fashion knowledge just for you! Your Favorite Personal Stylist attended several fashion shows to get the scoop on what designers are showing so you can get the very first, exclusive info straight from the runways! Holly's NYFW adventures were something ‘extra' this year, thanks to the kindness of Fern Mallis, who is the queen of Fashion Week (she's the one who actually started it back in the 1980s.) This is her 30th anniversary of going to the shows and she was kind enough to let Holly pal around with her for one of the days! #winning!! FIRST STOP: The Supima Cotton Design Competition. Globally recognized and acclaimed American fashion designer, Jeremy Scott, hosted the 16th annual Supima Design Competition, where eight finalists from the nation's leading design schools showcased exceptional individual creativity and design talent with eveningwear capsule collections created entirely with SUPIMA cotton fabrics and competed for a $10,000 prize. SUPIMA, the non-profit luxury brand that promotes the use of American grown Pima cotton around the world, named Carla Pierini of Drexel University as the winner of the 2023 SUPIMA Design Competition. HOT TIP: Please be sure to check out Holly's Pinterest Board for this episode! NEXT: Thursday night, Holly went to the “Fashion Icons” series at the 92nd Street Y where Fern Mallis conducts her annual interviews with influential designers, models and people in the fashion industry. She was in a conversation with the imaginative Gabriela Hearst, where she detailed her route to a career in fashion and how sustainability practices are a way of life for her. FUN FACT: For those of you who watched the inauguration of President Biden, she designed the look for Dr. Jill Biden, that was made from all deadstock fabric (materials existing from available fabrics to minimize the impact on the environment) and was embroidered with all the flowers from all 50 states. STOP NUMBER 3: Designer Jonathan Cohen's Fashion Presentation: A presentation is a more intimate version of a fashion show. It's like a small party. You can meet the designer, touch the fabrics, talk to the design team and more. Born of parents from Mexico and San Diego, Jonathan is known for his artistic Mexican prints, patterns and colors. The laid-back ease of the San Diego surf culture and the modern city approach have manifested into what the brand has become. #GORGEOUS! Also, Holly MAY OR MAY NOT have new boots arriving soon from his new shoe collection. (have you looked at the pinterest board yet? now would be the time!) HOLLY HITCHES A RIDE TO PROENZA SCHOULER! #winnniinnnggg As you should know, Proenza Schouler is one of Holly's go-to and favorite brands. The lines are sleek and modern, and very unique. The clothes are very simple this season with lots of flowy fabrics and neutral colors. You don't see anything else like it. And it's absolutely wearable. They also have a slightly lower price line called Proenza White Label. If you're interested in trying it, this is a great option to see if you like the fit and the aesthetic of the brand without spending a ton. THE SALLY LAPOINTE SHOW: Holly has mentioned this brand before, but she has not seen Sally LaPointe show since she first started going to fashion week, about six years ago. HOWEVER! This show, according to Your Favorite Personal Stylist, was the best one of the week. It literally took place on a sidewalk, taking over Crosby Street in NYC. This season's line has notes of streetwear, with lots of colored feathers, lime green, chain mail and metallics. The feather-lined and sequined ensembles are a staple in many party-loving downtown New Yorkers' closets. And then there were the thigh-high silver boots, and that was THE END for Holly. #TrueLove (Sally doesn't know it yet, but the Holly Train is about to roll up in there to start her Sally LaPointe journey. JUSSAYIN') LaPointe's clothing might appear slightly eccentric to the average person—she had crowds of pedestrians gathered around the outdoor show, causing a traffic jam. THEN, THE PatBO SHOW: The PatBO brand is another NYFW favorite. The designer, Patricia, is Brazilian. Her clothes are crocheted and beaded and very tropical. She makes beaded pants and flowy evening gowns that are like cruise and resort worthy. She also creates gorgeous swimsuit cover ups with unbelievable cuts, and the richest colors. DELL SCOTT COLLECTION Dell Scott is a magnificent designer from Philadelphia. This was a first-time show for Holly, and it was worth it. This designer has beautiful evening wear collection of dresses, both short and long, with beading and ruffles. She had few dresses that Holly absolutely loved. One was a hot pink, very low cut with a vertical dress, with up and down ruffles. She styled it with a really wide black belt because the ruffles were vertical. It literally looked like a hot pink cotton ball. The other was a very, very bold purple bright purple two piece top and skirt with a banded waist and the top was one shoulder crop top with a flower on the shoulder. #TODIEFOR There was more, but you need to listen the full episode to get the true flavor of the week – as ONLY Holly can give. Is your makeup making you look older? Did you know that wearing makeup that was once fashionable or using old makeup techniques might actually make you look older? #UMNO But with a little revamp and some inside knowledge, you can learn how to look younger as each day passes, or at least look like you are aging gracefully. #SIGNMEUP With the help of this week's special guest, Makeup Artist, Skincare Expert, and Beauty Educator Allyson Wisel, we take a look at how the wrong makeup or techniques can add years to your look without even realizing it - and how just a few adjustments can start turning back the clock with ease. ABOUT ALLYSON: Our guest is a beauty industry powerhouse with extensive experience in education and selling for well-known global brands such as MAC, Trish McEvoy, NARS, Laura Mercier & Dermadoctor. She began her career in artistry in 2005, working at the Trish McEvoy Counter, followed by Laura Mercier, MAC & NARS. MAKEUP TIPS TO MAKE LOOK YOUNGER: Start with your foundation and create a blank canvas. Fix thinning brows with a natural color and products to help fill and set them. To fix hooded eyelids, focus on elongating. Place your shadow in the crease of your lid and pull up. Using eyeliner can also give more definition to your eyes. Applying liner in the upper lid waterline can make you look like you have thicker lashes. Eyeliner opens the eye and can make them look bigger. Getting the right ingredients when cooking or baking is pertinent in a successful recipe. Building an outfit is no different. When you get dressed every day, you should be wearing the correct-fitting undergarments to support your outfit. #please Join us on this episode as Your Favorite Personal Stylist, Holly Katz, outlines the “Top Undergarments You Need to Own!” Listen Now Here: https://apple.co/2XXKHfC When you are deciding what to wear, choosing the correct undergarments can make or break how you feel about yourself in your clothes. That's what your clothes should be doing for you: serving you and making you look your best. Because when you look your best, you feel your best. #trademark! Backstory: When Holly is working with clients to help solve their closet chaos, her rule #1 is: “The older and out of date your undergarments are, the more unsexy and unflattering you feel.” So, to rectify this problem, you need to take inventory every year or so, and clean out your underwear drawer. You know which underwear and bras make you feel the best. So, keep those (as long as they are in good condition) - and get rid of the rest. HOT TIP: Follow along on Holly's PINTEREST Board for all these amazing suggestion and where to buy them at https://pin.it/3Yh0nsd THE TOP UNDERGARMENTS YOU NEED TO OWN: Seamless Underwear Correct-Fitting Bras Boob Tape, Nipple Covers and Backless Bras Shapewear Bottoms Shapewear Tops THE WEAR AND CARE OF YOUR UNDERGARMENTS: Underwear, of course, you wash after every wearing (which means you replace more often, too). Bras can be worn many days in a row before washing is necessary – because you don't work out in your regular bras. (Sports bras, you wash). Shapewear can be worn more than once, as well, as long as the support stays strong. The key to laundry care is to not be overly aggressive in your washing machine cycles or with detergents. AND, you never put undergarments in the dryer. Heat breaks down the stretchy fibers you need for support. Also, do not hang your bras to dry by the straps (again, all the stretch is there). Just lie flat to dry. HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON UNDERGARMENTS: Holly has a tried-and-true formula: CPW which is the ‘Cost Per Wear' that she swears by. If you are going to wear an item 100 times, is $100 too much to spend? You do the math that makes the most sense to you, but that is not expensive when you consider the CPW. The adage of ‘you get what you pay for' really makes sense when you spend money on workhorse items like supportive undergarments. HAVE YOUR ARSENAL READY! Take the time to get professionally fitted for bras of all sorts, try on shapewear items and purchase the ones that solve your support issues best, and try boob tape and nipples covers to see what works best for you. #likedoitnow Then, when you have an occasion or a new outfit, you will be ready to go with the strong foundations you need to look and feel your best. You won't be scrambling at the last minute. This is key to having a succeful wardrobe. WE INTERUPT THIS PODCAST FOR A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! Get ready for a major VIP Guest this week!! Jenny McClendon of @JennyFitStart joins us this week to discuss the Do's and Don'ts of exercise clothing, dressing, shoes, and accessories. As always, we recommend that you follow along on Holly's curated Pinterest Board! #DOIT And who better than Jenny to help us tackle this important fashion subject? Jenny McClendon, MS, PT of Jenny Fit Start hosts a fitness YouTube channel for seniors and beginners. #fitover50 Her channel is full of motivating exercises and instructional videos where her clients and viewers sweat, have fun, and try new things. Jenny's Fit Start program was named by @Oprah as "One of The 25 Best YouTube Workout Channels to Help Meet Your Fitness Goals at Home" and featured in @GlamourMag as one of the "Top 21 Best YouTube Channel Workouts" Holly sits down with her BFF since middle school to dish out the best advice for what to wear while working out - AND, what not to wear! Elements of Exercise Clothing Number 1: Sports Bras Jenny firmly believes in maximum support for women of a certain age. Look for T-backs, higher in the front necklines, and clasps in the back. Being cute with your sports bra is not a thing; of course, if they're slapping you in the face. #fashioncrime Number 2: Consider Your Activity Are you working out outside? Are you playing tennis? Are you stretching in a yoga class? Are you working out in a gym? Jenny recommends you think about the coverage you need, the support you need, the level of comfort for your activity – AND the level of confidence you want to feel in your outfit. “You are not going to find me in the gym in ratty T-shirts and shorts. This may sound silly, but I like to look put-together at the gym and in public.” -Jenny HOT TIPS: One of Jenny's favorite brands is ZYIA light and tight compression leggings. Her favorite tops are loose-fitting and breathable. Nothing made of cotton. Find something with a little bit of spandex and polyester blend so that it doesn't get stinky, won't stick to you, and doesn't hold sweat. Number 3: SpongeBob SquarePants vs. Jessica Rabbit The shape of your body dictates your workout wear! Someone who is narrow in the hips and legs vs. someone who is curvier in the middle will absolutely need to find support and coverage in different ways. HOT TIP: Holly points out one of her biggest mistakes: Buying workout wear at a yoga place - thinking “Oh my God, this is so cute! I can do yoga in this!” And then trying to go to the gym in the same outfit, and her boobs fall out. #NOTCHIC She did not realize that one does not get the support needed from yoga brands that they need for weightlifting or cardio, etc. Don't jump without support, Sister! #blackeyealert Number 4: Athleisure Wear vs. Workout Wear These are not the same. Athleisure wear is for when you are running around or relaxing. Your workout clothes are for working out and sweating in. Athleisure can go over/in addition to your workout clothing, or be worn alone. Number 5: Workout Shoes This is one of the most popular questions Jenny gets. She insists you need to go to an athletic shoe store, like Fleet Feet or others. They have highly sophisticated ways to fit your foot– first and foremost. Do you have a high arch? Do you walk on the sides of your feet? Do you have Achilles Tendinitis? Major feet issues? If you're high maintainence in the shoe department, GET FITTED FOR YOUR SPORTS SHOES! And skip the big box stores lwhere you pull the shoes off the shelves yourselves. HOT TIP: You should have different shoes for different activities. Running is not the same as weightlifting on your body. If you spend money on fitness classes, it's super important to invest in the proper shoe and body support for each workout. This will only increase your confidence when working out. Holly loves Nike Metcon shoes for weightlifting. Also key: change them out often. The support and sole grip that you need for each workout is depleted each time you wear your shoes. #truth After your workout shoes have served their purpose, please feel free to demote those shoes to your "house" section of your wardrobe. Keep them in yardwork shoe collection, or use them to walk the dog. For more on how to demote clothing in your wardrobe to an "around the house" section, hit up episode 148, Top Pajama & Loungewear pics. Solid. Number 6: Insoles If your feet have problems, even after a good fitting by a person who knows better, learn about insoles for your feet and how to best obtain them. Do you need a podiatrist? Maybe. Can you purchase extra-support insoles at the pharmacy? Yes. The point is to make sure your feet are fully supported, so they can properly support your workout. Poor or ill fitting shoes can lead to additonal knee, back and hip issues. Number 7: Socks This is a personal choice. Do you like thicker socks? Do you get hot and prefer to wear thin socks? There is no correct answer on this. However, you will usually benefit from quality-made socks in any case. Your pinterest board awaits~ HOT TIP: Jenny loves BOMBAS socks of any variety. Buy quality socks that fit well – and buy your favorites in multiples! Number 8: Hot vs. Cold Most of the workout wear rules apply, but think about layering, again, based on your activity. Avoiding cotton or anything heavy that will hold sweat and moisture – because you will still sweat in colder weather! Remember: Holly's tip, as always your workout and exercise clothing are part of your wardrobe. Just becuase it's cold, doesn't mean you skimp and wear pajama pants to the gym. #HOWBOUTNO Number 9: Are Bike Shorts OK? I mean sure if you have fabulous legs..(Jenny). Some say you can't wear bike shorts after a certain age. If you have a larger bottom half, you can wear a longer shirt or jacket over them and wear them around the house or wear them out with air jordans like Holly. #sorrynotsorry. Listen to the end to find out what's next for the Jenny Fit Start empire, because the sky is the limit! We love her attitude that Fitness is for Everyone! And that her love is teaching others how to feel their best – at any age. This is no gym rat life, folks! This is real life fitness for real people. This week, your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz is defining the areas of Pajamas, Loungewear, and other “house clothing” you need to know to avoid committing one of the worst Fashion Crimes: Pajamas worn in public, ratty sleepwear, and inappropriate loungewear. What you wear during your down time matters for a myriad of reasons, but mainly, because you deserve to look and feel your best, especially when you are relaxing! NOTE: We have a TON of Fashion Bestie shout-outs this week, so do not cut this episode short! We have gotten SO MUCH fan mail and so many fashion questions – and this makes us SO HAPPY! Also, as always, be sure to follow along on Holly's curated Pinterest Boards to see all of her suggestions in this episode. First of all: Pajama sets are not loungewear. You cannot go outside or run errands in anything that starts with the word “pajama.” Pajamas, pajama pants and pajama sets are for sleeping. The literal definition of pajamas is “something you wear to bed,” and something you sleep in. Period. End of Story. Loungewear is a step-up from sleepwear. You “lounge around” in it and could possibly run an errand or walk the dog in it - if you are covered in the appropriate areas and don't look like you just rolled out of bed. Pajama Fashion Crimes: Be aware of these critical issues that can lead you down the road to committing pajama crimes - sometimes without even noticing: Buying cheap pajamas at box stores that don't hold their shape or are made of cheap fabric. Wearing your significant other's oversized T-shirts, or old sports, concert, etc. T-shirts that you feel badly about giving away. Mixing your pajama pants and shorts with your assortment of crappy sweatpants in the same drawer. If you mindlessly wear PJs or Loungewear, you will walk by a mirror one day and not recognize the person staring back at you. You need to get your pajama game in order! Hot Tip: We spend time and money on our wardrobe, and even on our workout clothes, so don't skimp on your pajamas and loungewear! This is part of your wardrobe. You need to get your act together and get 2-3 pajamas and loungewear outfits that you can wear on your down time, without being too skimpy. (We are not talking about lingerie in this episode. That is another subject entirely.) Why? Because if you have friends, family, kids, or teens around the house, then their friends are around the house. You need to have some self-awareness about who sees you in your PJs and loungewear. If the Amazon guy rings your doorbell, and needs you to sign for something, you can't open the door half-dressed. Types of Pajamas: You should have some really nice pajamas that are currently in style and fit you correctly. Not 10-year-old pajamas or Christmas-themed pajama pants in May. Okay? #notchic. And just a word to the wise: If y'all do the holiday, dress-up, greeting card with matching outfits thing, or matching pajamas, whatever your tradition is, it's none of our business. We are just telling you that outside the month of December, is a non-negosh. Don't. Do. It. Holly's Favorite Pajama Brands: Eberjay PJ Salvage Casa Bella Natori La Perla Olivia van Halle Barefoot Dreams Yawn Luxurious Organic Nightwear Holly's Favorite Loungewear Brands: Kiya Tomlin | Go to EP 125 Dayo Women | Go to EP 134 Paridaez |Go to EP 26 Carbon 38 Luxury Activewear Alo Yoga Cotton Citizen Pangaia Side Bar: “House Clothes” There are times when you need to do some serious housekeeping, clean out your garage, paint your fence, do a little yardwork, etc. You need clothes that you can get dirty in. So, please dedicate a few items for this area of your life and wear them only for this purpose. Include in this area some shoes, jackets, etc., that can get gross, but which you are not going to wear for anything else. Keep this section of your closet separate. Side Bar: “Sweats” We are not banning sweat outfits. We are banning old, out of style, ratty, beat down sweatpants. Hot Tip: Get yourself a personal gift list. Start a Google Doc. Plan ahead for Mother's Day, your Birthday, Hannukah and Christmas! You know what you want. Your family does not, UNLESS you tell them. Pick out your favorite PJs and loungewear, put them on a list, and COMMUNICATE to your fam and friends what you'd like. If you're the gift giver, always include a gift receipt. In summary, take care of you so you can take care of others. Buy yourself some comfy, silky, pretty PJs! You'll feel better, you'll look better, and you will sleep better – so you can can feel great about what you're wearing, event when you go to bedd. It's summer dress season! Are you ready? Your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz is back this week with what o wear this summer for our fashion besties over 40 – and we mean – wayyyy over 40! First and foremost, let's go back to Holly's #1 Fashion Rule: Shop for Fit. Not for Price. When you shop for price, you can run into the danger of sacrificing fit for price, which is a huge fashion crime. #howboutno Thank you to our faithful listeners and followers for asking Holly about summer dresses (and summer festival wear). The options for summer dresses are completely endless, but Holly has picked some that she has been wearing herself, that are comfortable yet stylish. Let's talk about body issues, as summer weather begs for less clothing which may expose areas you may not be comfortable having on display. Some of our listeners tell us they are worried about showing their arms and/or legs. Other listeners have tummy issues. #TAKEANUMBER Summer-weight clothing simply lends itself to exposing these areas, so it's best to have a game plan if you are worried about showing off some of your body parts. HOT TIP: No one sees your body as critically as you do. Your arms and legs ARE JUST FINE! There are solutions for blemishes, veins, and whatever else you are overly critical of. Don't give up too easily! Ever heard of DermaBlend? It's make-up for those places on your body you may want to cover or hide. It's a miracle product. So, if you have veins on your shins, or varicose veins or spider veins, it's okay. You can get a dress that's at the knee, or below. And use the DermaBlend. It's not that serious. You will thank me later. As for hiding the tops of your arms that may not be in perfect shape, no one is asking you to go totally sleeveless or wear a strapless top. You CAN find short sleeves or a flutter sleeve that offer a bit more coverage. There is no reason to schvitz in 90 degree weather. Your arms don't need to be the most favorite part of your body. Work around them! “When you let your body issues come before your style, then we've got a real problem, then you're stuck, you get stuck. So let's get you unstuck.” - Holly Katz, Personal Stylist SUMMER-WEIGHT RUNNING AROUND DRESSES: If you're running errands, playing chauffeur or hanging in your own backyard outside something obviously more casual and less expensive is the way to go here. Brands Holly Loves: Nicole Miller (friend of the podcast) Ramy Brook Rails Poupette NYC Marissa Webb Dress the Population They have a ton of selections that are great for activities. Also, when you have a dress that you end up wearing, for like around the house activities are chores, these are things that are usually too casual for a night out that you can demote them to a more casual section of your closet. HOT TIP: Try a kimono! Wear over a tank top and jean shorts! Or over jeans. It's a great non-dress, dressy look! THE DAY DRESS: The next level up in dresses is a daytime dress, of course, which is considered a nicer dress, say that you would wear to a lunch, day party, baby shower, etc. Not something that you would wear just kicking around or going to carpool. Something that you would want to show off and look dressed and put together. Hot TIP: Remember, just because you're dressed, it does not mean you are dressed up - you're just dressed. Also, you need to have a bag and shoes, you cannot carry your everyday tote bag or shopping bag. #UMNO Don't forget about dress codes: a day dress is lightweight. It can be cute and dressy, but it is for daytime. Evening dresses are heavier weight, or embellished, or made from finer fabrics. SPECIAL EVENT DRESSES: Now, if you don't have a variety of dresses to choose from the minute you get invited to something fun, you feel unprepared and you panic and run out and then you get something new, grasping at straws, hoping that you made the right choice. Take the time to BUILD YOUR WARDROBE over time when you can find dresses for fit, not occasion and certainly not for price. So this is why building and elevating your style is so important. Brands Holly Loves: AMUR Meg Derek Lamb 10 Crosby Jason Wu Rosetta Getty MILLY Frame Ba&sh HOT TIP: If you find a dress style or brand you love, and it doesn't fit well, don't forget you can have items altered. Don't pass up on a quality dress or fit, just because it is too long or not fitted in the areas you need. Most dry cleaners or tailors can make quick fixes that are game changers! EVENING DRESSES: If you have an evening dress that you wore 20 years ago, it needs to go. #sorrynotsorry They will and do go out of style. Even it is black-it's irrelevant. Black tie dresses don't last forever. And if you keep something for that long, that means it's life in the spotlight is probably over. It's okay. It had a great life. Brands Holly Loves: Sara Roka Alexander McQueen Naeem Khan Pamella Roland Markarian Chiani Boni Rickie Freeman for Teri John Lela Rose Kika Vargas Special occasion dresses are an investment. Period. End of statement. So plan for that. You don't buy them often. So go for quality over quantity. PS: Do not forget to go to Holly's Pinterest Board for more summer dress ideas and links to purchase. This week we have a treat for our Deep Divers and giving you all a first listen of the crossover podcast of the century. June, Jessica, Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas cover the 2011 film, Love On A Leash.
