[1:58] My guest today, Merline Barrington, is the Manager of Enterprise Risk Management for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. On November 3rd, she will be leading one of the breakout sessions at 9:00 a.m., titled “Connecting ERM to Strategy: Tackling Strategic Risks a Deep Dive at a Time.” [2:20] Merline is also a CRMP holder and a lot of fun to speak with. Let's get started! Justin welcomes Merline Barrington to RIMScast! [2:32] Justin and Merline met last year at the RIMS ERM Conference 2022 in Indianapolis. Merline was a very excited attendee. Justin picked up on that enthusiasm and suggested Merline should submit a session. Today, they will talk about the session Merline will do for RIMS ERM Conference 2023. [3:13] Merline Barrington's session for RIMS ERM Conference 2023 is called “Connecting ERM to Strategy: Tackling Strategic Risks a Deep Dive at a Time,” on November 3rd, kicking off the Friday morning sessions. Merlin is more excited than nervous about it! [3:34] Justin was fascinated with Merline's position at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. She is the lead for ERM. The ERM unit is a small, nimble, central group with dotted line connections up, down, and across the enterprise to areas that are indirectly or directly responsible for ERM risks to their business and objectives. [4:35] As a Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP), Merline is responsible for leading and innovatively developing an ERM program designed to proactively manage business, operational, emerging, and strategic risks to this very complex, quasi-government, bi-state organization. [4:55] The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spans several global business segments altogether valued at several billion dollars. Merline's work includes determining the agency's ERM framework and architecture, and integrating risk intelligence with key functions such as strategic planning and resource allocation.  [5:21] Merline also works with partners in different lines of defense, such as audit and insurance. All of this is ultimately to inform decision-making and to provide that holistic view and understanding of significant risks to executive and board-level audiences. [5:39] Merline works with various levels of the enterprise, from the most senior executive levels to the front-line staff to proactively identify and manage risk via workshops, risk control self-assessments (RCSA), and other techniques. [5:57] Importantly, Merline's job also includes developing and mentoring practitioners on her team and indirect team members throughout the organization to deliver on its program's value proposition. [6:32] Merline discusses the value proposition of ERM. If you take the time to craft an honest and accurate value proposition for the brand of ERM of your organization and consider what your key audience expects from ERM, you can develop a cascading message where the core remains the same but there are different levels of zooming in. [8:06] The Port Authority is responsible for transportation by land, water, air, and roadways. This includes the major airports in the New York-New Jersey region, and one in upper New York: LaGuardia, JFK, Newark, and National Airports. It includes the seaport, marine terminals, bus terminals, bridges, tunnels, and commuter rail pass. [9:31] The Port Authority also has some real estate in Lower Manhattan. If you're in or around New York or New Jersey, you touch a Port Authority asset, one way or another, [10:02] Merline explains what brought her to the Port Authority. She has a passion for public service. She earned a spot in the agency's competitive management program for grad students. She touched many areas of the agency, which piqued her interest in a career in an area where she could leverage her skills to improve public service. [10:41] Merline's career at a transportation provider led her to risk by providing an avenue to build her career in an area that is purposed to protect routine, mature organizational value. That is ERM. Following her passions in what she is good at is what led Merline to ERM. She wants to make public institutions better with her skills. [11:21] This is Merline's 10th year at the Port Authority. [11:50] RIMS plug time! Justin sends a quick shoutout to the RIMS New Zealand and Pacific Island Chapter and Marsh Australia and New Zealand, who welcome you to “Embrace the Unknown, Unleashing the Power of Risk.” This is a one-day session on February 12th, 2024 at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand. [12:13] It will be a gathering of experts, thought leaders, and professionals from various industries to explore and discuss the critical role of risk management in today's dynamic and uncertain world. There are sessions about AI, resilience, and adaptability, highlighted by case studies and insights. A link is on this episode's notes. [12:35] Upcoming Virtual Workshops: Visit RIMS.org/virtualworkshops to see the full calendar. Our friend Chris Hansen was recently on RIMScast. He will be leading Managing Worker Compensation, Employer's Liability, and Employment Practices in the US on November 7th and 8th. Be sure to register for that course! [13:24] On October 31st, Resolver returns to present Building Your Business Case for GRC Software in 2024. Metrics That Matter has Enhanced Decision-Making Across Your Cybersecurity Program on November 7. CLARA Analytics makes its RIMS debut on November 9th with Risk Management in the Era of Artificial Intelligence. [13:56] On November 16th, Nationwide returns to present U.S. Customs Surety Bonds: A Primer for Risk Professionals. On November 21st, Beazley returns to present Business Risk: Helping Your Executives to Navigate Today's Volatile Risk Environment. [14:15] On December 12th, Prepare Yourself for the New Generation of Risk with Riskonnect. On December 14th, Aon will be Addressing Today's Risks While Preparing for the Risks of Tomorrow. [14:28] Visit RIMS.org/Webinars to learn more about these webinars and to register! Links are in the show notes. Webinar registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [14:49] Generally speaking, organizations of similar size or depth to the Port Authority may be experiencing a confluence of strategic risks, such as cybersecurity meets climate change, and the need to adopt digital and climate-friendly technology at a balanced rate, so as not to exceed the adoption curve, while attracting the right talent. [15:41] Merline believes organizations are having to grapple with the introspection of these risk areas, compounded by a volatile global and economic context. The ability to interpret uncertainty before it fully emerges is relevant to organizational strategy. Being able to measure the potential impact is critical to the success of any organization. [16:25] Merline advises organizations and travelers to book flights early and plan ahead. Have a Plan B. See if your destination is also served by rail or other modes of transport since things are unpredictable. If your flight doesn't work out, you have another plan. [17:44] Merline's RIMS CRMP certification has added much value to how she approaches ERM in the organization, especially in how she develops new staff. It helps when mentoring staff to be able to point to specific principles and research to delve into to become a better RMP and communicate how said principles enrich the work they do. [18:26] Merline earned her RIMS CRMP about two years ago. She was attending the conference where she met Justin as a way to gather credits toward recertification. Merline has a lot of interest in ERM and AI and data analytics and ERM.  [19:28] All roads lead to the further integration of ERM and strategy, using all the developing emerging technologies of AI, data, etc. ERM is to get better insights and get ahead of the curve to bring meaningful dialog to the attention of decision-makers and facilitate decision-making based on a thorough understanding of data and analytics. [20:14] Merline Harrington shares her CRMP story in a link in this episode's show notes. [20:21] Merline's ERM session will be one of the first Conference breakouts of November 3rd, “Connecting ERM to Strategy: Tackling Strategic Risks a Deep Dive at a Time.” Merline is excited to share a bit of the journey of her ERM practice at the Port Authority, sharing her wins and lessons learned that turned into tactics and techniques. [21:31] Merline will be highlighting some of the turning points, all of which happened at a complex organization while engaging several different types of businesses, which added complexity to her work. [21:54] Merline is eager to have this conversation on ERM starting with COSO's updated version of the ERM Framework in 2016‒2017, explicitly tying what we do to strategy setting, strategy execution, and strategy monitoring. And then the hard work came in of planning how to do it. Everyone has their own flavor or path of ERM. [22:32] If a person can walk away from the session with a helpful technique or two Merline will think she has been successful. Justin will try to jump into Merline's session first thing in the morning. [22:58] Justin tells Merline Barrington it's a real pleasure to see her again, and looks forward to seeing her later this week in Denver. [22:19] Special thanks again to Merline Barrington of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for joining me on RIMScast. I have a link to her CRMP story on this episode's show notes. She is also President of the RCSA, the Recruitment Consulting and Staffing Association of Australia and New Zealand and she is Chair of the Development Committee for the NORTH Foundation, a charity which supports innovation in health research and patient care.  Nina helps business leaders with their people problems and delights in bringing talented people together to drive value, build vision and realise opportunities.     With extensive leadership experience, she has built and restructured high-performing teams with a focus on talent attraction and retention.   As a non-executive director and managing director, Nina understands the challenges and complexities of driving growth and ensuring a customer-first approach in large, diverse businesses that have multiple service lines.  If you have a business problem, complex tactical challenges with your employees or organisational structure, you can be guaranteed that Nina has helped others navigate through similar issues.   Nina has an MA (Hons), is a Fellow for the RCSA (Recruitment Consulting and Staffing Association) and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.   Nina and I had a great discussion on Beaumont People's purpose and how it has guided their actions before and during the pandemic and positioned them strongly for success. Some of the things we covered in this conversation include: Nina's personal purpose and how it inspires her in her work Beaumont People's purpose and how it inspired their investment in an Australian-first research initiative and the world's first meaningful work profiling tool How the GFC inspired an initiative to support Beaumont People's people; that has gone onto become a big part of Beaumont People's strategic success and enhanced their reputation and culture The architecture of Beaumont People's brand purpose positioning and how their ‘how' contributes to their ‘why' and shapes their decision lens What the Australian research on meaningful work reveals about organisations in Australia and the expectations of Australian employees How everyone's path to meaningful work is unique and how understanding what it means to individuals and organisations can be game changing The trap of assumptions around meaningful work The psychological and sociological aspects of meaningful work How Beaumont People's purpose around meaningful work guided their actions during the initial stages of the pandemic and accelerated some of their longer term plans and positioned them for success How purpose has reinvigorated the Beaumont People team The balance between purpose and profit at Beaumont People   So many insights in this episode about “meaningful work” that I hope will challenge some assumptions and get people thinking more deeply about their work and the kind of meaningful work that can be offered through organisations.   Contact Nina https://www.linkedin.com/in/ninamapsonbone/   Beaumont People Website https://www.beaumontpeople.com.au   Explore the Meaningful Work Research and Profiling Tool  https://go.meaningfulwork.com.au/home?r_done=1

Recruiters Making an Impact - How to Sell the Value of What You Do, with Charles Cameron, Ep #86

From changing people's lives to creating positive social and economic impact, a career in recruitment can be a truly fulfilling experience. Despite the best intentions, you may still face the frustration of being perceived as a salesperson who is just after the fee, rather than what is the best for your candidate and your client. How do you change this perception? For Charles Cameron, it is all about defining and selling the value of what you do.    My special guest Charles is the CEO of RCSA Australia and New Zealand and Vice President of the World Employment Confederation, the global lobby group for the recruitment, staffing and HR services industry. In our discussion, you will hear Charles' insights on the importance of genuinely professional recruitment consultants and how to sell that value to your clients. Charles also shared why recruiters will always remain relevant despite the continued rise of online and AI platforms and why cooperation in our industry will make us stronger and more influential. Episode Outline and Highlights [3:27] How Charles got into the recruiting industry. [8:05] Charles talks about the importance of genuinely professional recruitment and staffing consultants. [14:10] The economic and social contribution of professional recruitment and staffing firms. [17:05] Why genuine recruitment professionals will always be relevant despite the continued rise of online and AI platforms. [19:50] How do we sell the value of what we do? [30:30] Competition versus cooperation - what makes us stronger and more influential when we share and cooperate. [38:24] What are the big challenges and opportunities facing our industry post covid? The Importance of Genuinely Professional Recruitment and Staffing Consultants A passionate advocate for labour market intermediaries and consultants, Charles is driven by the role professional recruitment consultants can play in inspiring people to be better through work. I took the opportunity to ask him about his thoughts on the importance of genuinely professional recruitment.  As CEO of RCSA Australia and New Zealand and Vice President of the World Employment Confederation, his insights are remarkably relevant especially in today's economy. Charles stated, “I think great recruitment professionals have this ability to get inside the minds of individuals and find something that they didn't themselves know was there.” He further explained that although it may appear easy on the surface - finding someone who needs a job and marrying them to the right client - it actually involves more than just that. “Getting inside their minds, understanding what it is that they have, how it is that we can assist them to transition skills from old economy jobs to new economy jobs, really then supporting them” Charles added. Hear more about how Charles wants to change the way in which people look at recruitment agents. Selling the Value of What We Do Charles firmly believes that what we as recruitment professionals change people's lives for the better. But the problem he sees is that we are unable to consistently sell the value of what we do as an industry. How do we sell the value of what we do as professional recruiters? He explained that we must first address why “You just don't define your value particularly well… I think this all comes back to this notion that we sometimes don't believe in that value ourselves.” Charles emphasized the importance to “[Not] stand back and just allow others to dictate who we are.” It requires stories about candidates involving human connection. In line with that, Charles shared the “NextGen campaign”, where they create materials for their members to use digital assets and stories to compel people to “change people's lives while making good money along the way…”.  Challenges and Opportunities Post-COVID Going back to Charles' unique vantage point as Vice President of the World Employment Confederation and CEO of RCSA, I had to ask his thoughts on the biggest challenges and opportunities we have as an industry post-COVID. Charles shared a couple:  Finding talent - from being “talent traders” to “talent developers.” Clients retaining their recruiter - why retained model is the key. Hear why these are two important elements post-COVID and what we should do as recruiters to adapt. How to Increase Your Billings with Split Fees, with Jason Elias, Ep #8

Have you thought about incorporating split fees into your business model but are worried about the financial impact? In the competitive world of recruiting, is it better to embrace this model versus losing out? Is it easier to partner and collaborate with other recruiters to fill a position? My guest today, Jason Elias, has built a successful recruiting firm specializing in the legal field—while incorporating split fees. He's found a way to leverage the competitive niche to benefit his business and his clients.  Jason and I converse about how he got into the recruiting industry and chose his niche. We also cover why he started utilizing the split fee model and how it's led to success. If you're considered giving this model a go, be sure to listen to this fascinating episode.  Outline of This Episode [2:11] Jason Elias' journey from lawyer to recruiter [5:16] How did his first split fee come about? [7:20] How he started collaborating with other recruiters [12:14] Why a split fee model is worth adopting [15:30] Learning lessons from building a team [19:45] Jason's plans for the future of his firm [25:24] What do you do when clients are your competition? [32:41] How does Jason juggle all of his roles? [35:35] Why Jason believes managing is worth the reward [38:00] Jason shares his favorite tech tools  How did Jason start collaborating with other recruiters? Years ago—when Jason was self-admittedly a young and naive recruiter—he spent a chunk of money to place an advertisement in a publication. That advertisement failed to get him any leads. While turning the pages, he noticed another recruiter's ad in the accounting section. So he called him up and they met up to discuss their lack of success with the advertising. They completely hit it off. He also found out that his newfound friend collaborated frequently with other recruiters.  The NPAworldwide Australian conference just happened to be two days later. They fast-tracked Jason's membership and he walked in and instantly felt comfortable. Everyone was transparent and honest, and he felt like these were his people. The organization claims to allow recruiters to collaborate with others in a safe environment—and he believed this from day one.  Fast forward to today, and Jason has been involved with NPAworldwide for over 16 years. He had the opportunity to serve as the director for the Australian region of the NPA for 4 years. Now, he serves on the executive team as Secretary/Treasurer and Chair-Elect. Once he has served his term in this position, he will be appointed the Chair of NPAworldwide for a two-year term.  The natural segue from networking to split-fees Jason's first split came from a fellow council member at the RCSA—she worked for an organization that needed a lawyer. She connected the two parties and Jason provided a lawyer that was a perfect fit. Since that day, he estimates that one-third of his business is from split fees. Jason has reached gold-level with the NPA, which means he had made at least $2,000,000 in placements at the time he reached that level (over 5 years ago). Of that amount, he would estimate at least $500,000 was from split-fees with other recruiters. Jason continues to see the benefit of collaborating with other recruiters and splitting fees. For example, he has a client in the Northern Territory of Australia. He called her up one day and she didn't have any placements for him—but she was looking for someone in IT. He told her that while he doesn't specialize in IT, he knew someone who did. He connected the two and his fellow recruiter filled the position.  For his effort and cooperation, he got a thank-you fee from his colleague. Jason points out that if he hadn't connected her with someone else she would have gone to a mega-recruiter to fill the position. In the end, he likely would've lost that client's future placements to them. Instead, he created a happy customer who was excited to continue working with him.  Split fees are about the best outcome for the client  Jason found himself in a situation where the perfect candidate for a client had to back out. Instead of being at the end of the road, he was back to square one. His client called him up and informed him that another recruiter had approached them with a promising option that they wanted to interview. They understood he was on retainer and they had signed an exclusive contract. Instead of informing his client that they must go through him due to the contract he told them to make a call to the other recruiter—he would offer to split the fee with him. He ended up speaking with the other recruiter and came to an agreement that worked for them while benefiting his client and the candidate.  In this way, the client's position was filled and they were satisfied. Jason notes that it is about the long-game and getting the best outcome for the client. This decision, albeit a small monetary loss, led to repeat business because he put the client's happiness first. Per Jason, in the end, “If you help their business grow, then they'll help your business grow”. It's a win-win for every party involved. Be aware of your strengths and your shortcomings—then adjust accordingly  Jason has a lot on his plate, from his role at the NPA to managing and running his own business. On top of that, he's working on his Master's degree and has a side hustle business. With all that he's juggling, how does he manage to remain so successful? Jason admits it's because he's aware of his weaknesses. He's a great recruiter, a great business-owner, and excels with his position at the NPA. But he believes he's a lousy manager.  Instead of accepting defeat, he chose to build a team of experts around himself to offset his weaknesses. He hired a team member that takes on more of the administrative and managerial role. He does his best to touch base with his team daily and they do a weekly Zoom call. But in the end, he believes in treating his team like the adults and professionals that they are. He doesn't micro-manage, while providing them with the tools they need. He's made it a point that he is always available if they need him.  Jason could have gone the route of remaining a high-performing solo recruiter. But with a family to provide for, he wanted to lower his risk. He realized he was better off delegating some of the work and taking a split. It's worked well for him—Jason has built a national model with great recruiters who are experts in their field. He has a good reputation for being one of the best in his industry. From Ballerina to Recruiter: What Drives Erin Devlin's Success? Ep #7

How do you build a successful recruiting agency? What mindsets are needed to thrive as a business? When Erin Devlin became the managing director of people2people in the state of Victoria, Australia, she achieved 70% growth in a 3-year timespan.  Erin humbly claims that when she merged her firm, Devlin Alliance with people2people that they had already established a brand with amazing leadership and accomplished recruiters. She simply built on their success when she launched their Melbourne division. Join me as I talk with Erin about how her company plays to the strengths of its recruiters, their hiring process, and their staff development strategies. Erin also talks about the characteristics from her professional career as a ballerina that led to her success as a recruiter. Don't miss her unusual and inspiring story! Outline of This Episode [1:06] Meet Erin Devlin—Managing Director of people2people [2:57] Why did Erin merge her firm with people2people? [4:03] What Erin means by ‘celebrating wins' [7:51] How are team members allowed to leverage their strengths? [11:21] Professional Recruiter of the Year with RCSA - why was she selected? [13:35] Why the 360-degree recruiting model works for people2people [15:05] Developing a team member from rookie to consultant [21:58] Back to the hiring process: how do you assess those things [24:50] Erin's background as a professional ballerina [30:18] The mentoring program at people2people [33:09] What is Infront Sports Consulting? [36:50] Leveraging success to give back [40:19] Technology as a key to success Celebrating wins and leveraging strengths is the backbone of people2people Erin points out that in order to be successful as a recruitment team, you must provide adequate recognition for the accomplishments of your team in every stage of success. It can be as simple as verbal recognition for a job well done—or a spa day for the whole team. Telling people they've done a great job is a wonderful motivator for success. How does people2people accomplish that?  On Mondays they highlight the successes of the previous week in their team meetings. Perhaps placements that occurred, targets reached, or company growth. On Fridays, they celebrate together and talk about the best thing that happened and what they enjoyed the most that week. People show up and do their best when they're rewarded for it, even in the smallest of ways.  At people2people they allow their team to play to their strengths. They set goals and have a general guideline of what the process to reach those goals could look like. But when it comes down to the nitty-gritty work, they allow their staff to accomplish it in a way that fits them best. They don't dictate how things get done. Erin states, “We definitely do have a high-performance culture, but there is that flexibility and autonomy in how they achieve the outcome”.  What sets their hiring and development standards apart from the rest?  When hiring recruiters, Erin notes that they don't always hire the most experienced person in the industry. Instead, they look for people who have demonstrated commitment, shown that they're responsible, and demonstrate success—whether it was as an athlete or in academics. They want someone empathetic, intellectual, and team-oriented. Above all, they look for people who have strong interpersonal and communication skills and a positive attitude. Once hired, their new team member has a plethora of growth opportunities available to them. They have structured classroom-style training, access to Recruitment Juice, RCSA courses—as well as on-the-job training. They have weekly mini-training lunches where a topic is chosen and discussed for half an hour. These opportunities are very simple, yet so effective for continuous learning. To hear how Erin assesses experienced recruiters, what their interview process is like, and the unique way they vet applicants—listen to our whole conversation.  Erin's story from accomplished Ballerina to Managing Director and CEO Erin wasn't always in the recruiting field. She got her start as a professional ballerina with the Australian Ballet. After 7 years, she found herself burned out. She ended up traveling the world but was soon ready for her next challenge—a transition into a long-term career. She started as a temp at a company but was hired full-time within an hour of starting. After observing their recruiting department, she asked if they'd allow her to give it a shot. With that leap of faith, she found a role that resonated with her and fit her unique skill set.  Being a ballerina had encompassed her whole world. It was all-consuming, and there was no balance in her life. But it taught her discipline and drive. She cultivated the ability to work as a team, mastered empathy, and learned to understand people's emotions. These are all skills that transition well into recruiting. In 2010, Erin launched Devlin Alliance, a recruiting firm that specialized in sales and marketing recruitment. 5 years later, her firm merged with people2people and she transitioned into her role as Managing Director. Erin also serves as CEO with Infront Sports Consulting, which people2people is the parent company of. They specialize in helping professional athletes transition out of sports and into a long-term career. We talk more about this role and why it is close to Erin's heart, so keep listening.  How mentoring someone else is a win for everyone involved Erin has had the opportunity to be part of the RCSA's mentoring program. She was mentored by many successful recruiters, including Greg Savage and Mark Smith. Erin had a great experience and wanted to give back herself, so she started mentoring others. She feels it is a privilege to help grow the next generation of leaders. Erin and I agree that mentoring positively impacts both the mentee and mentor and that both can learn from each other. There is also an informal mentoring program at people2people where members are encouraged to seek out a mentor. The company's only ask is that anyone being mentored, in turn, is willing to mentor someone else. It's a once-a-month commitment where the individual gets to pick their mentor's brain and learn industry tools and strategies. The most successful people are those who are always learning and growing.  And according to Erin, “If you want to be successful you have to invest in your development”—something she is always striving to do.  Erin's company firmly believes in giving back to the community. You've likely seen the recent devastation from the Australian bushfires that have been painted across the news worldwide.
