In this episode of the Dirt & Vert Podcast, we sit down with two-time Cherokee Ultra 130K finisher Aden Rogers. Aden is one of only four runners to earn the coveted Cherokee double buckle, and her story from this year's race is a masterclass in relentless forward progress. Aden breaks down her journey into trail running—from picking up the sport to find time for herself as a mom to winning her very first 100-miler at Pinhoti. We go deep into her experience on the Cherokee course this year, where brutal heat and humidity forced her to battle extreme dehydration and stomach issues starting at mile 15. Aden shares what went through her mind on the dark stretch of Doc Rogers Road, how she navigated the fine line between safety and quitting, and why she refuses to give up on herself when things get dark. The Cherokee Double Buckle: Aden breaks down what it took to finish one of the toughest mountain courses on the East Coast for the second time. Battling the Heat: Managing severe dehydration and humidity, dealing with stomach issues from mile 15, and finding a way to keep moving forward. The Dark Miles: The mental strategy Aden used on the Doc Rogers Road section when quitting felt like the only option. Refusing to Give Up: Why Aden believes hardships in life and running are temporary, and how pushing through dark moments builds lasting strength. Pinhoti to Cherokee: Reflections on her background, from winning her first 100-miler at Pinhoti to tackling brutal technical vert.

On Tuesday, Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., will face off in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary. The race is the next biggest test of whether progressives can win statewide, particularly in purple territory. The Michigan race is one of the most expensive primaries of the cycle. Outside groups have spent upward of $50 million in support of Stevens or against El-Sayed. Most of that money is coming from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and its affiliated groups — close to $30 million, which their largest investment ever in a single race, according to The AP.“It's just anti-democratic on its own terms,” El-Sayed, the former public health official, tells The Intercept Briefing. “I always ask people, “OK, you're covering this as a very close race, but would it be close if they didn't have $60 million to spend? Would it even be a close race at all?'”This week on The Intercept Briefing podcast, host Akela Lacy asks, can progressives win outside of blue cities? El-Sayed argues, if you focus on the issues people care about and act on them, you can: "Look, you have an option that's not bought off by all the same corporations. And that option is desperately clear about wanting you to have healthcare, and also wanting your kid to have a good school, and also making sure that there's not a data center that gets planted in your backyard to automate your job away.”Lacy explores that question further with Ryan Clancy, a Wisconsin state representative and founding member of the state legislature's current Socialist Caucus, and Thom Hartmann, a progressive political commentator. Clancy says voters he speaks to in Milwaukee “want a fighter. People want people in office who are going to fight for the middle class, fight for actual transformative change.” He adds, “The idea that in order to win in a purple district that is roughly split between Democrats and Republicans, that you need when you're a Democrat, to look as much like a Republican as possible is just not helpful.” Polling suggests that El-Sayed has a commanding lead over Stevens in the Democratic primary. But polls for the November general election narrow sharply when El-Sayed is up against Trump-backed Republican candidate Mike Rogers; one shows Rogers beating him by 10 percentage points, which the Stevens's campaign has leaned into.“We've been in this change moment. We're sick and tired of neoliberalism. We're sick and tired of Reaganism. We're sick and tired of the status quo. We're sick and tired of a dying middle class. We have been living in this moment, in my opinion, since 2000, and I think in a big way since 2008. Obama promised hope and change, and really just brought us a bunch of health insurance companies,” says Hartmann. “I'm not sure if we're there yet to the point where a good message like El-Sayed's message can overcome millions of dollars from Israel and from big corporations. That's going to be the big challenge.”The Intercept invited Stevens on the program for an interview but as of publishing have not heard back yet.Full transcript: https://interc.pt/4fRLS8aKeep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join. I've left a link to the book in the show notes below. This is the true story about the murder of a girl who worked in a cigar shop, the investigation of it by law enforcement, how Edgar Allan Poe saw it as an opportunity to escalate his career and name… and how it all almost blew up in his face, even with some claiming Poe was the murderer of the poor girl! Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: March 2022Weird Darkness devotes this episode to the unsolved 1841 murder of New York shopgirl Mary Cecilia Rogers and its strange collision with the unraveling life of Edgar Allan Poe. It opens with the July 28, 1841 discovery of Rogers's body floating in the Hudson River near Hoboken's Sybil's Cave, tracing her path from a Connecticut-born clerk at John Anderson's Tobacco Emporium on Manhattan's Nassau Street to the local celebrity known as "the beautiful cigar girl," then following the search led by her fiancé, cork-cutter Daniel Payne, and former suitor Alfred Crommelin, through the police suspicion cast on Payne and on Anderson, the September discovery of her bloodied clothing in a Weehawken thicket, and Payne's own laudanum suicide at that same spot that October. From there, the episode moves to Philadelphia, where Poe was following the case from a distance while his household came apart around him: his wife Virginia's sudden pulmonary hemorrhage during a parlor performance on January 20, 1842, the day after Poe turned thirty-three, marked the onset of the tuberculosis that would eventually kill her, and the strain bled directly into stories like "The Masque of the Red Death" and "Eleonora." It follows Poe's collapse at Graham's Magazine, including his refused request for a salary advance on an $800-a-year wage, his failed bid for a Philadelphia Custom House post that ended with a fumbled meeting tied to President John Tyler, and his abrupt exit from the magazine after being passed over for associate editor Charles Peterson.Next comes Poe's attempt to solve the Rogers case through fiction, recreating how he pitched a sequel to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" to Baltimore editor Joseph Evans Snodgrass and Boston's George Roberts before selling it to William Snowden's The Ladies' Companion as "The Mystery of Marie Roget," transplanting the murder to Paris and casting the sleuth C. Auguste Dupin as the man who would name the killer. It details the disastrous timing by which Weehawken tavern keeper Frederica Loss, shot by her own son on November 1, 1842, gave a deathbed account claiming Rogers died during a botched abortion, undercutting Poe's carefully built naval-officer theory just as his final installment was headed to press. The episode closes with the suspects who have circulated around the case ever since, from the hanged Somers mutineer Philip Spencer, floated by biographer John Ingram, to Daniel Payne and Alfred Crommelin, to tobacco magnate John Anderson, who lived out his final years in a Tarrytown mansion behind steel-lined shutters, convinced his cook was poisoning his roast beef and claiming to speak with Mary Rogers's spirit, and it ends on the long-running question of whether Poe himself carried knowledge of, or any personal connection to, the murder he spent his career trying to solve on paper.

In this episode, I begin a new series exploring what I believe is wrong with the play therapy field today. I share a surprising piece of anonymous conference feedback that challenged me personally, but more importantly, raised a much deeper question: Have some play therapists lost the heart of this work? I revisit the progression from Rogers to Axline to Landreth and argue that love, empathy, genuineness, and deep respect for children have always been at the center of our model. I also challenge the growing tendency to approach play therapy as simply a job or a set of techniques rather than a deeply relational calling. I explain why feeling compassion for our clients is not a weakness, why tears don't compromise professionalism, and why maintaining a tender heart is essential to remaining faithful to the child-centered philosophy. If we lose our capacity to grieve alongside children, we risk losing the very foundation of what makes CCPT so transformative. Mind your manners out there. - **Hail Shikro Crew** — A medieval war hymn honoring Packernet lore's own prophet: monks chanting, drums pounding, a shield of cheese and a sword of light. If you don't know the name, that's between you and the frozen wilds. - **Green Voltage** — German-language thunder from last October's Sunday night comeback in Pittsburgh. Down 16-7 at the half, Love threw for 360, Rashan Gary hunted Rogers all night, and Green Bay walked out 35-25. The legend got outplayed by the kid who replaced him. - **Eight Quarters of Hell** — Two back-to-back November home losses nobody wants framed on the wall. Panthers won on a last-second field goal. Eagles came the next week and won 10-7. A fan at the absolute end of his rope, screaming at a team with all the talent and none of the execution. - **Bears Suck** — A grudge that started in Chicago and refused to stop at the city limits. Griffin Warner talks betting for Friday. Griffin Warner brings a full fourteen game Major League Baseball slate to episode 70 of What I Bet on the Straight Outta Vegas AM podcast feed, arriving with a hot hand at three wins in his last three, seven wins in his last nine, nine wins in his last twelve, and twelve wins in his last seventeen, and he spends the Friday, July 24 show walking through every number on the board before locking in his best bet of the night. He opens with an early 4:10 p.m. Eastern first pitch between the Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers, explaining at 01:31 why Colorado's inflated home numbers make them nearly unplayable even at a plus price on the road. From there he turns at 02:16 to the matchup that becomes his headline lean, Matthew Boyd and the Chicago Cubs visiting Jared Jones and the Pittsburgh Pirates, fading Boyd after a swing and miss free final start against the Twins and backing Pittsburgh's price against a nationally popular opponent. At 03:02 he breaks down how the loss of Bobby Witt Jr. and uncertainty around Jac Caglianone push him toward the under as the Kansas City Royals visit Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers, then at 03:48 previews a potential shootout between Eduardo Rodriguez and the Arizona Diamondbacks against Connor Palmquist and the Washington Nationals, two travel worn clubs he expects to hit more than pitch. At 04:34 he explains why he does not trust Will Warren against Jesús Luzardo and the Philadelphia Phillies even with an underachieving Phillies lineup, and at 05:05 walks through why he leans toward the Atlanta Braves over Trevor Rogers and the Baltimore Orioles despite Rogers producing results that the market still will not fully believe. One of the most detailed segments arrives at 05:50, where Griffin analyzes Roki Sasaki's triple digit velocity without matching swing and miss numbers as the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Sean Manaea and a New York Mets team still unraveling after a defensive miscue in right field turned a sure win into a season altering loss, a sequence he ties directly to his under position on New York's adjusted second half win total. From 07:22 through 11:55 he moves through the rest of the card, leaning under with Joey Cantillo and the Cleveland Guardians against Shane McClanahan and the Tampa Bay Rays, questioning whether Patrick Sandoval can be trusted post elbow reconstruction as the Toronto Blue Jays visit a red hot Boston Red Sox club, passing on Houston's Spencer Arrighetti and Chicago's Davis Martin until the price on Yordan Alvarez and the Astros gets cheaper, fading Mackenzie Gore's well known second half decline as the Seattle Mariners visit the Texas Rangers, fully fading the Athletics' pitching and offense as they travel overnight to face the Minnesota Twins, leaning under on a Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals pitching duel between Rhett Lowder and Dustin May, and choosing patience over a play on the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants total while it sits above his number. The episode closes at 13:42 with Griffin's official What I Bet best bet, the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, minus 120, over the Chicago Cubs, extending his run heading into the next installment of the show and giving listeners a complete first look at a full slate of numbers built game by game across nearly two hours of Major League Baseball action.
