Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Japan C&SI Alliance & Netvibes Director, Dassault Systemes as at December 2024 when we recorded this session. Previously Fabio was C&SI Alliance Executive, Dassault Systemes; Global Alliance Director, Strategic Business Director, Director Strategic Pursuit Team, Director Mechatronics Solution at Siemens Digital Industries Software; Project Manager Promec Automotive. Summary A seasoned leader with extensive experience in Japan, he highlights the unique challenges and adaptations required to lead effectively in a Japanese business environment. Having transitioned from a Western leadership model to managing teams in Japan, he underscores the significance of communication, trust-building, and cultural sensitivity. One of the most striking differences Crisafulli encountered was the approach to communication. In contrast to his Italian background, where opinions are expressed directly, he observed that Japanese team members often remain silent in meetings. Instead of voicing their concerns or ideas immediately, they may provide feedback privately afterward. This indirect communication style required him to cultivate an environment where employees felt comfortable sharing their perspectives, even if it meant allowing silence during discussions. He learned to encourage open dialogue and create a psychologically safe space where disagreement was not only tolerated but valued. Crisafulli also emphasizes the importance of leading by example. Rather than issuing direct orders, he believes in granting ownership and responsibility to his team members. By allowing them the freedom to make decisions within a guided framework, he fosters a sense of accountability and motivation. This is particularly crucial in Japan, where employees may be hesitant to take initiative unless they understand their role's significance in the broader strategy. Another key aspect of his leadership philosophy is trust. He makes a deliberate effort to demonstrate trust in his team first, which, in turn, encourages reciprocal trust. He remains observant of body language and behavioural changes, recognizing early warning signs of disengagement or dissatisfaction. If a team member struggles with performance, he engages in direct and private conversations to understand their challenges, offering support or reassignment if needed. Crisafulli has also noticed a shift in younger Japanese employees, who show a greater willingness to take risks and seek innovation compared to past generations. He believes that providing them with opportunities to experiment, even at the risk of failure, fosters both personal and professional growth. In managing headquarters expectations, Crisafulli advocates for adaptability and diplomacy. He encourages executives to move beyond stereotypes about Japan and to understand local business realities firsthand. His approach to leadership is deeply rooted in respect, empowerment, and continuous learning, making him an effective bridge between Western corporate structures and the intricacies of Japanese workplace culture.

In today's episode I take a quick look at how applications development and maintenance, which is about two-thirds of India's IT sector revenues, is changing, but first a few headlines. Beyond Next Ventures, a Japanese fund focused on early-stage deep tech startups in Asia, is targeting up to ¥25 billion (about $168 million) for BNV Fund 3, its third fund, TechCrunch reports. And yesterday, BNV said it completed a first close of ¥10 billion ($68 million), which it will invest in ventures in areas including robotics and biotech, according to TechCrunch. Here in India, SaaS startup SuperOps.ai, which provides software tools for managed services providers to simplify their IT management and workflow process, has raised $12.4 million in Series B funding led by Addition and March Capital, the Chennai company said in a press release, with participation from existing investor, Matrix Partners India. One thing today Tata Consultancy Services kicks off of Q2 results for India's IT sector today. Infosys reports its earnings tomorrow. So, instead of the usual curtain raiser on their outlook, I wanted to draw your attention to a trend in the industry, touched off by the rise of generative AI, that is already looking like the beginning of the end of the applications development and maintenance model – or at least ADM as we know it today, which accounts for two-thirds of the $245 billion sector's revenues. First, customers are taking various software services back in-house, according to Bernard Charles, CEO and soon-to-be Chairman of Dassault Systemes. Last week, during his latest India visit, I got a chance to speak with Bernard, a 40-year veteran of the French 3D software giant, with India's biggest conglomerates as customers, and deep partnerships within India's IT sector. India's IT services industry has a very strong engineering R&D segment, but companies like Tesla, for example, want to “control the destiny of their end products themselves,” he said, when it comes to the mix of software, electronics and hardware. And this is happening in biotech and pharmaceuticals, smart manufacturing, mechatronics systems and so on – areas that are relevant to Dassault, but also important vertical practices for India's IT sector. So, on the flip side, are companies like Infosys taking on more full-product level work, I asked. Yes and no, Bernard says, because there's another dimension to this, which is to help them to transform themselves, so they can provide a lot more consultancy than before and play a bigger role. “So, I think there will be a new adjustment,” he says. “A lot of this industry has been sustained with the massive development of code to integrate legacy systems. And they have made their money on that. But I think the future, when it comes to our platform, is low code, no code, used natively to produce your own code, not with programmers but with a generative AI.” And this is inevitable. “It's happening. And this is what I call low code no code, to generate code with robots as opposed to programming them manually,” Bernard says. A couple of days ago, I got a chance to meet Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho, India's largest software products company, and he has similar views in relation a related area – software developer productivity, which he sees as very large opportunity for his company. He says it's a really big deal and is investing heavily into R&D in this area. “I believe that productivity in software development itself can be easily tenfold, maybe 20-30-fold in the long term,” he told me. Generative AI use cases are emerging at light speed, Stanton Jones and Olga Kupriyanova wrote in a newsletter recently, at ISG, a consultancy that tracks outsourcing contracts around the world. “This will have an outsized impact on the biggest service line within the sector – applications development and maintenance,” they say.
As with most new technologies, India has a contribution not only for their proliferation, but also for the research that goes into them. On the one hand, they're being researched in India, but on the other, they're being used at the very grassroots levels, in schools and colleges here. Sudarshan Mogasale, CEO of Dassault Systémes Solutions Lab in India has a direct view into the role India played in the development of this technology, and why it's important for firms to use it. Hemant Gadgil, Executive Director of La Fondation, Dassault Systémes India, adds how Dassault Systemes is taking the technology right to the ground. Tune in for more!

Generative computer-aided design is typically compared to how nature creates. When a tree grows, it will naturally find the strongest footing and the best path toward sunlight. The tree doesn't grow unnecessary limbs; it is efficient in the way it expands outward. Generative design operates in the same way. Engineers designate their material and the constraint design points, and the generative CAD software automatically creates a part that meets the strength and load criteria in the most efficient design possible. The next step for generative design is to introduce AI and automation to the process. Colin Swearingen is a design solution consultant for Dassault Systemes. He discusses how generative design is being used by engineers today and how the tool is evolving into cognitive augmented design.

In this podcast, we will be talking with Oleg Shilovitsky about cloud PLM, OpenBOM, and user training.Oleg ShilovitskyOleg is the co-founder and CEO at OpenBOM. OpenBOM is a cloud-based real-time collaboration and data management software for managing parts, catalogs, bill of materials, inventories, and purchase orders. The software is used in all stages of engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain environments.Oleg has been in the PLM trenches for over 25 years, building software products for data management, engineering and manufacturing. He has worked for many companies such as SmarTeam (acquired by Dassault Systemes), Dassault Systemes ENOVIA, Inforbix (acquired by Autodesk) and Autodesk. His passion for manufacturing industry and new technologies led him to start working on OpenBOM. Oleg is an author of Beyond PLM (http://beyondplm.com), a leading source of information and comments about engineering and manufacturing software for the last 10 years. He is also a consultant and advisor to a number of startups and industrial companies.PODCAST HIGHLIGHTSThe core foundation of OpenBOM is the idea of a network, which can be called multi-tenant or System-as-a-Service (SaaS). Unlike traditional PLM that are developed for a specific company, OpenBOM focuses on the network of a company. COVID 19 crisis hasn’t changed the trajectory of the rise of cloud PLM adoption we have seen in the last 10 years, however, it has been a huge acceleration factor. This crisis is pushing everyone in this direction as more companies are starting to allow their employees to work remotely. Implementation of OpenBOM is quick and seamless: you can open an account directly on the platform, with no need for lengthy and costly set-up. The system works out-of-the-box immediately. The biggest challenge for companies when implementing a PLM is education and decision making on what will go into the software. OpenBOM has a bottom-up approach: get the people in a standard PLM the sooner as possible, and by using and interacting with it, users will progressively realize what their problems and needs are, and customize the system accordingly to those. Cloud PLM was initially criticized for its lack of flexibility and customization. However, nowadays, this is not true anymore. OpenBOM was created with flexibility in mind: all the data model is completely customizable. You can change the column name, add features, and much more. Security in cloud PLM is not a problem, it’s a red herring. People are less secure than the cloud. The biggest scandals in the security world are not caused by technology, but rather by people.OpenBOM has invested a lot in providing online information. People like to figure out by themselves. If they can’t find the information and support online, users will get demotivated and abandoned. OpenBOM created an online library. It is the focal point for users to learn. They realized that solely providing help with ‘’click here’’, nobody was interested. If a process requires some creativity or an understanding of the problem of the company, it requires more context. So the library provides information, not only on the steps but also the context around it. Oleg’s biggest advice for any manufacturing company is to use virtual mirrors. They need to look at themselves and understand what they want. He always starts asking his client: what do you have and what do you want. And then technology will come.SHOW LINKSTo get in touch with Oleg, check www.openbom.com. You can create a free account for 14 days trial. If you want to learn more on cloud PLM and PLM in general, check also Oleg’s blog: www.beyondplm.com

Data management is a big topic with the podcast. No matter how you want to manage your data, InFlow Technology has a solution that can fit what you need. But what are those solutions? SOLIDWORKS has so many options, can we just talk about data management from a high level? Well this week, Kurt Lundstedt of Dassault Systemes joins the podcast and we do just that. First, we talk about the start of SOLIDWORKS data management. Later, we talk about the evolution and expansion of data management. And finally, we talk about a survey SOLIDWORKS ran in 2015 about why customers don't have PDM. You don't want to miss it!

Digital Enterprise Society is the authority on the transformation to a digital enterprise, impacting all areas of an organization. Tune in for discussions among industry leaders about operations and action needed to drive digitization principles forward for the future of product development and life cycles. In this episode, Thom Singer and Craig Brown welcome Oleg Shilovitsky, CEO of OpenBOM to discuss some of the rapidly changing aspects of PLM in today’s world. From cloud computing and new technologies to increased consumer power and cost-saving efficiencies, there is not an aspect of PLM that has been left undisturbed with the pace of change. Oleg shares his predictions on how each of these aspects will come together to create an even more effective future in the manufacturing industry, and what you can do today to be ready for it. On today’s podcast, you will learn: The myth of the single source of PLM truth Why you can’t expect to utilize one single database source to make better decisions. The evolution of technology has expanded the sources of manufacturing truth beyond one single source. The importance of connecting with people in addition to databases when making informed decisions. The benefits of SAAS for PLM Security remains a top concern for cloud-service provider companies. Cloud technology is a welcome disruptor in the PLM space when considering cost. Data sharing and connections are going to require restructuring in order to maximize efficiency. Career advice for navigating new technologies and changes in PLM The past 10 years show that PLM is going to continue changing at a rapid pace. Understanding technical terms like ‘polyglot persistence’ is easily made possible by utilizing your favorite search engine. Ever-increasing consumer knowledge and power impacts the supply chain and manufacturing. Two areas of the greatest change are faster processes and how people are trained in their work. A willingness to change along with technology is more essential than ever. Continue the conversation with us within the Digital Enterprise Society Community at www.DigitalEnterpriseSociety.org. Many lawyers are interested in transitioning to an in-house legal role. Right or wrong, the perception is that working in-house means more control over your hours. It also means you are not responsible for generating your own work. At the same time, in-house lawyers get to be part of the “team” and sit at the table with clients before critical business decisions are made. In contrast, being in private practice gives you the chance to be more entrepreneurial and build your own business, even though it removes you from day to day contact with your clients. But there is actually another model for practicing law. It is a hybrid role called outsourced counsel. As outsourced counsel, lawyers can work onsite with several clients at once. While outsourced counsel technically have their own law practices, they also have the benefit of “living with the clients they are serving.” In this episode, I speak with Paul Cohen, who is currently Senior Counsel at Dassault Systemes. But for many years, Paul maintained a private practice where he worked as outsourced counsel to several technology companies. Paul has spent his entire legal career working for technology companies in Massachusetts. He has great insights into what it takes to be successful in this hybrid role. Paul is happy to speak with you directly if you have questions about being an outsourced counsel. He can be reached at paulcohenlaw@gmail.com . I’m Tim McGee, and in this episode I’m joined by Asheen Phansey. Asheen is active at a critical hub of sustainability and business. As a translator between people, cultures, technology, and ideas he has been able to bring principles from nature to help craft sustainable outcomes. His work has spanned biotech, aerospace, electronics, and he currently works as a Senior Manager, at Dassault Systemes. If you aren’t familiar with Dassault, you are likely familiar with the products they help create as engineers throughout the world use their software to craft our modern society. Through our conversation Asheen and I touch on the emerging internet of things, changing desires in our high tech products, the art of intrapreneurship, and we even take a crack at a fresh perspective on what’s next for sustainability. Enjoy.

Soapbox The next time you're in a store take a walk down the detergent aisle and check out the dozens of different products. Some of the packages that look so comfortable on the shelf may have actually started life as an avatar -- a virtual product in an equally digital grocery store. That may be news when it comes to consumer products but automakers have been engaged with 3-dimension computer design for some time now. In fact this virtual universe allows the manufacturers of these complex machines to take them from concept to clearance -- as it were -- through a process called PLM or Product Lifecycle Management. Not only is it a huge cost saver when it comes to time and materials, but it also gives designers, engineers and marketers alike, 21st Century advantages that their earlier counterparts could only imagine. This week on Autoline the top executive at one of the world's pre- eminent PLM companies joins John to discuss the process and how it continues to revolutionize the auto industry. Bernard Charles, President and CEO of Dassault Systemes talks about the impact of PLM on all of us and how Dassault is out to bring the 3D experience to our daily lives. Joining John and Mr. Charles on the panel are Drew Winter from WardsAuto.com and Christopher Sawyer of Cars In Context.

Pure Imagination When Gene Wilder first sang "Pure Imagination" in the 1971 movie classic 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,' he was strolling amid Chernobyl-sized eatable candied plants and a river of liquid chocolate -- obviously fictitious creations from the fertile minds of movie magicians. Some 28 years later, when it comes to the equipment we're seeing in today's automobiles compared to the early '70s, you almost shake your head in disbelief as we did when we first saw Wonka's Candy Factory: works of pure imagination, indeed. In this week's show we talk with three executives from three different companies and discuss not only some of these incredible products but just how they are being developed for today's cars. We start with Anne Asensio from Dassault Systemes, a French firm that creates products for its client base in the virtual world. Ms. Asensio says that today, more than in the past, design has become an extremely collaborative effort that involves everyone in the food chain -- from the very top to the customers themselves. Meanwhile, one of the products coming out of this collaborative effort, in this case from our second guest's company iBiquity, is HD Radio. Bob Struble heads this supplier which produces digital receivers that allow you to listen to all those restricted local AM & FM radio stations that are now being broadcast only on Hybrid Digital bands. And speaking of restrictive broadcasting, let's not forget about the Internet. Chrysler sure hasn't. It’s working with a firm from Silicon Valley that's bringing the Internet to its cars and trucks in the not too distant future. Jennifer Applebee from Chrysler joins John to tell us just how far away this technology is and what will be available with it once it's in the vehicle.
On this edition of Autoline EXTRA, John McElroy continues his discussion with Anne Asensio the VP of Design Experience at Dassault Systemes. Ms. Asensio discusses moving from the OEM side of design to the supplier side and what the differences are between the two. She also shares her thoughts on if designs in the 3D world can be as beautiful and artistic as drawing with conventional tools.
